  • The fruits showing brown rot symptom on dwarf flowering almond were found in Gongju, Chungchungnam-Do in Korea in July 2005. Small water-soaked lesions on the fruits were initiated, and gradually developed to soft rot covered with gray conidia. Then the diseased fruits were shrunk and became grayish-black mummies. A fungus was isolated from the diseased fruit and its morphological, cultural and molecular genetic characteristics were investigated. Typical blastospores of Monilinia spp. were observed under a light microscope both from tissues of the diseased fruits and from PDA-grown cultures. The fungus grew well at $25^{\circ}C$ and on PDA. The ITS ribosomal DNA region (650 bp) of the fungus was amplified by PCR and analyzed. Comparative data on ITS sequence homology among Monilinia spp., ITS sequence-based phylogram and morphological characteristics showed that the fungus is Monilinia fructicola. This is the first report on Monilinia fructicola causing brown rot on fruits of dwarf flowering almond in Korea.

Results: Korean middle school students sleep about 7 hours per day, and they exercise less than 4 hours per week. Around 13% of the students skip breakfast nearly every day. 35% of the students were under severe stress, and 38% have reported at least one symptom of physical distresses including gastrointestinal disorders or headaches. 31% of the students took a functional supplement, especially one with vitamins as the most favored one, and ginseng and herbal drugs coming second and third. Conclusion: This result first reports a general feature of health-associated factors in middle school students. This study in the future will be basic information to develop medical supports for adolescents using traditional Korean medicine.

  • Brief hypnotherapy was used to a 22-year-old male soldier who had suffered from a hysterical aphonia for 10 days. Hypnosis was used to induce relaxation at physical and emotional levels and to influence the patient's attitude in a beneficial and therapeutic way. Self-hypnosis was taught in the first session. Notable improvement occurred after e second session and was maintained throughout 10months follow up. The hypnotic suggestion would be most effective if couched in a way which would enable the patient to perceive the dissolution of the symptom as reinforcing rather than losing face.

  • Temporomandibular disorder(TMD) is described as a cluster of disorders characterized by pain in the preauricular area and/or the muscles of mastication; limitations or deviations in mandibular range of motion; and noises in the TMJ during mandibular function. The most common symptom in TMD patients is pain that is aggravated by chewing or other jaw function. These symptoms are appeared when the stimuli loaded in TMJ are over the physiologic tolerance. The primary goal in treatment of TMD is to alleviate pain and lor mandibular dysfunction. TMD treatment can be divided into 2 categories: reversible and irreversible methods. Reversible methods include medication, thermal therapy, habit modification, physical therapy, appliance therpy and arthrocentesis and lavage and irreversible methods include arthroscopic lysis, surgery, occlusal adjustment et al. It is widely accepted that reversible methods are ther first choice of treatments. However if reversible ones are not effective, irreversible methods are considered.

  • Hyaluronic acid is widely used in medical procedures, particularly in cosmetic procedures administered by physicians or nonmedical personnel. The materials used for cosmetic procedures by physicians as well as illegally by non-medical personnel can cause nonthrombotic pulmonary embolism (NTPE). We report the case of a woman with acute respiratory failure, neurologic symptoms and petechiae after an illegal procedure of hyaluronic acid dermal filler performed by an unlicensed medical practitioner 3 days before symptom onset. Although a few cases of NTPE after injection of hyaluronic acid have been reported yet, this is the first typical case showing a NTPE manifestation after the facial injection of hyaluronic acid.

  • Miller Fisher syndrome (MFS) is characterized by the acute ophthalmoparesis, ataxia and areflexia. We describe the case of 70-year-old man with cardinal symptom of MFS and active pulmonary tuberculosis (Tb). A thorough evaluation led to the diagnosis of MFS and treatment with intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg) was started. The complete resolution of ophthalmoparesis and ataxia was observed from the fourth day of IVIg treatment. This is the first report to describe a case of MFS that developed in patient pulmonary tuberculosis.

  • Canker farmed on a pomegranate tree(Punica granatum) with yellowing leaves and death of some twigs was founded at a garden of Gyungbuk Agricultural Technology Administration. Botryosphaeria dothidea was isolated from the canker and pathogenisity of the isolate was confirmed by artificial inoculation to the pome-granate twig, which showed the same symptom with naturally infected twig. This is the first report of a natural infection of pomegranate tree by Botryosphaeria dothidea in Korea.

  • This research sought to survey oriental medicine diagnosis methods currently practiced, analyze their advantages and disadvantages, and work out clinical establish direction for oriental medicine diagnosis methods. Oriental medicine diagnosis methods currently practiced in the related circles are categorized into traditional Korean diagnosis methods and holistic auxiliary diagnosis methods. The traditional Korean diagnosis method focuses on treating diseases of traditional Korean health management methods which are based on the bodily self-viability capabilities according to the Orient's viewpoint of health. Under the diagnosis method, based on the cognition of maximizing the state of the bodily self-viability capabilities together with the characteristics of diseases, symptoms, pulse, first face-to-face patient observation, physical constitution, and life principle are managed according to form, color, pulse and symptom which divide the bodily viability capacities into inherent and acquired elements amid both elements interacting.

  • Objectives : I investigated the organization and contents of "Sanghanbyeollyu(傷寒辨類)" in order to grasp its bibliographical points. Methods : I compared "Sanghanbyeollyu(傷寒辨類)" with "Sanghanmyeongniron(傷寒明理論)", "Uihagimmun(醫學入門) Sanghan(傷寒)" in side of their organization and contents. Results : The first volume in "Sanghanbyeollyu" is composed of various theories, the second volume in it is composed of many symptoms. The second volume include 49 symptoms in "Sanghanmyeongniron" excepting 1 symptom, its organization is similar to the organization in "Uihagimmun Sanghan". Besides the frequency of prescription quoted in both "Sanghanbyeollyu" and "Uihagimmun Sanghan" is 251, the frequency of prescription quoted only in "Sanghanbyeollyu" is 617, the frequency of prescription quoted only in "Uihagimmun Sanghan" is 622. Thus, "Sanghanbyeollyu" is not a duplicate of "Uihagimmun Sanghan" because of the frequency of prescription quoted. Conclusions : I have found out that "Sanghanbyeollyu" does not only adopt the merits from "Sanghanmyeongniron", but also fills its organization and contents with "Uihagimmun Sanghan".

  • Primary non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of the salivary gland is an uncommon tumor that most often occurs in the parotid gland. In the parotid gland, malignant lymphomas are often clinically unsuspected, manifesting as nonspecific mass indistinguishable from other more common epithelial tumors. This case report describes a bilateral parotid glands mass as a first symptom of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. The final diagnosis was established after an excisional biopsy and immunohistochemical staining. The patient underwent surgical excision and chemotherapy.
