  • Today's building and fire prevention codes are mostly prescriptive. Prescriptive codes are based on major fires in earlier years that created a need for specific building provision. These codes provide a minimum level of safety. As the general and engineering uses of computers have increased over the years, so has use of computers in the fire protection engineering. This has allowed fire protection engineers to develop alternative approaches to solve today's fire protection problems or to evaluate the performance of a specific fire safety goal. A performance based approach to building and fire codes involves the following: 1) identifying specific goals, such as, safely getting out of the building in 10 minutes, 2) obtain conceptual approval from authorities, 3) define performance level, 4) develop design solutions and identify tools such as, fire tests, models, or methods, to demonstrate that a design will meet the fire protection objective 5) test solutions, 6) present test method and results to the authorities. Some people in the fire protection community consider this to be nothing more than an intellectual exercise, while the others view it as a way to reduce expenses on large project$^4$ Others in fire protection community view this as a way to refine the design process to design fire protection systems to better protect the fire hazards. This paper will focus on application of these tools, specifically computer fire models, to actual cases such as: design of a smoke control system heat transfer analysis and egress of building occupants during potential fires.

A Study on Zhu dan Xi's "Theory on the Sufficiency of Yang and the Deficiency of Yin" (주단계(朱丹溪)의 "양유여음불족론(陽有餘陰不足論)"에 관한 연구(硏究))

  • "Theory on the Sufficiency of Yang and the Deficiency of Yin(陽有餘陰不足論)" mainly instituted as follows: The 'Yang Qi(陽氣)' of the heaven(天) has changed to 'Qi(氣)', and the 'Yin Qi(陰氣)' of the earth(地) has changed to 'Xue(血)', 'Qi(氣)' is always sufficient and 'Xue(血)' is always deficient. 'The Always Sufficient Qi(氣常有餘)' means 'the fire always exists(常有火)', and 'the fire(火)' is 'the premier fire(相火)'. 'The premier fire(相火)' is always in men's body and causes 'activities(動)' which is the core characteristic in men's life, and in other side it always has opportunities to be made symptoms by 'the abnormal activities of the premier fire(相火妄動)'. In 'the always deficient Xue(血常不足)' , 'Xue(血)' is the 'Yin Qi(陰氣)' of liver and kidneys[肝腎] which is attached by 'the premier fire(相火)', as it means 'Xue(血)' and 'Jing(精)'. He suggested that 'the premier fire(相火)' is the power of human life, but if 'the premier fire(相火)' is not based on 'Yin Qi(陰氣)', it can not fulfill its function. So he thought that the maintenance and fulfillment of 'Yin Qi(陰氣)' is very important. In conclusion, "Theory on the Sufficiency of Yang and the Deficiency of Yin(陽有餘陰不足論)" explains the basic character of men's life which 'Dong Duo Jing Shao(動多靜少)', so 'the premier fire(相火)' which control 'the activities(動)' is always being and 'Jing Xue(精血)' which control 'Jing(靜)' is always scare.

Numerical Simulation on Smoke Movement in Multi-Compartment Enclosure Fires under Pressurized Air Supply Conditions (급기가압 조건에서 복합 구획 공간 화재의 연기 거동에 대한 수치해석 연구)

  • This study examined the flow characteristics of fire smoke under pressurized air ventilation conditions by carrying out fire simulations on multi-compartment enclosure, including room, ancillary room and stair case. Fire simulations were conducted for the air-leakage test facility, which was constructed to measure the effective leakage area and aimed to improve the understandings of fire and smoke movement by analyzing the overall behaviors of fire smoke flow and pressure distributions of each compartment. The simulation results showed that the heat release rate of the fires was controlled sensitively by the amount of air supplied by the ventilation system. An analysis of the velocity distributions between the room and ancillary room showed that fire smoke could be leaked to the ancillary room through the upper layer of the door, even under pressurized air supply conditions. From these results, it was confirmed that the fire size and spatial characteristics should be considered for the design and application of a smoke control system by a pressurized air supply.

The Development of Flow Control Ventilation Damper According to the Pressure Variation of Smoke Control Room (제연구역의 압력변화에 따른 풍량제어 배출댐퍼 개발)

  • This study developed a ventilation damper that can control flow rate according to pressure differential variation of the smoke control room in order to improve problems related to existing smoke management systems and maximizing performance of smoke management systems. The development damper was tested for verification of utility and performance. The supply flow of the developed ventilation damper was increased by about 1 to 5%. The results prove the effectiveness of the flow control ventilation damper by providing stable flow over the designed flow of the fan in the smoke control room. In addition, the study acquired the original technology for a flow control ventilation damper.

  • The buildings of domestic wear the upper floors and an underground in-depth reconciliation tendency to do and the possibility of fire occurrence at the time of formation accident is coming to be high. Therefore will be scattered to various place and is established and prevention of disaster information of the receiver which will integrate there is a necessity which will manage. In this paper away where each receiver is installed in the fire for the remote monitoring and controld able to connect to the Internet and fiber optic cable that can be networked fire receiver and control desk was constructed. Between each device can be used by the fire, and more depending on the status of monitoring and alarm, control and maintenance can be performed to develop an integrated management system. The system is evaluated by the criteria of the KFI, and for each segment of the signal propagation time to perform experiments confirmed the reliability of the performance.
