The line current problem(2-dimensional space : point source) is not easy to analyze the magnetic field using the standard finite element method(FEM), such as overhead trolley line or transmission line. To supplement such a defect this paper is proposed the coupling scheme of analytical solution and FEM. In analysis of the magnetic field using the standard FEM. If the current region is a relatively small compared to the whole region. Therefore the current region must be finely divided using a large number of elements. And the large number of elements increase the number of unknown variables and the use of computer memories. In this paper, an analytical solution is suggested to supplement this weak points. When source is line current and the part of interest is far from line current, the analytical solution can be coupling with FEM at the boundary. Analytical solution can be described by the multiplication of two functions. One is power function of radius, the other is a trigonometric function of angle in the cylindrical coordinate system. There are integral constants of two types which can be established by fourier series expansion. Also fourier series is represented as the factor to apply the continuity of the magnetic vector potential and magnetic field intensity with tangential component at the boundary. To verify the proposed algorithm, we chose simplified model existing magnetic material in FE region. The results are compared with standard FE solution. And it is good agreed by increasing harmonic order.

This paper presents the modeling of geosynthetic-reinforced compacted soils and discusses the reinforcement effect arising from confining the dilatancy deformation of the soil by geosynthetics. A series of compressive shear tests for compacted sandy soil specimens wrapped by geosynthetics are carried out by quantitatively examining the geosynthetic-reinforcement effect, occurring from a confinement of the dilative deformation in compacted soils during shearing. In the test, the initial degree of compaction is changed for each series of sandy soil specimens so that each series has different degree of dilatancy characteristics. Herein, the axial forces working on the geosynthetics so as to prevent dilative deformation of compacted soils during shearing are measured. Furthermore, the elasto-plastic modeling of compacted soils and a rational determination procedure for input parameters needed in the elasto-plastic modeling are presented. And to describe the irreversible deformation characteristics of compacted soils during shearing, the subloading yielding surface (Hashiguchi (1989)) to the elasto-plastic modeling is introduced. Finally, the elasto-plastic finite element simulation is carried out and the geosynthetic-reinforcement effect is discussed.
The simulation techniques of hydrologic data series have been developed for the purposes of the design of water resources system, the optimization of reservoir operation, and the design of flood control of reservoir, etx. While the stochastic models are usually used in most analysis of water resources fields for the generation of data sequences, the indexed sequential modeling (ISM) method based on generation of a series of overlapping short-term flow sequences directly from the historical record has been used for the data generation in western USA since the early of 1980's. It was reported that the reliable results by ISM were obtained in practical applications. In this study, we generate annual inflow series at a location of Hong Cheon Dam site by using ISM method and first order autoregressive model (AR(1)), and estimate the drought characteristics for the comparison aim between ISM and AR(1).

This paper presents stress distribution around a central crack tip in a tensile plate using phase-shifting photoelasticity and a power series stress function. Isochromatic data along the straight lines far from the crack tip were obtained by phase shifting photoelasticity and were used as input data of the hybrid experimental analysis. By using the complex-type power series stress equations, the photoelastic stress distribution fields in the vicinity of the crack and the mode I stress intensity factor were obtained. With the help of image processing software, accuracy and reliability was enhanced by twice multiplying and sharpening the measured isochromatics. Actual and reconstructed fringes were compared qualitatively. For quantitative comparison, percentage errors and standard deviations of the percentage errors were calculated for all measured input data by varying the number of terms in the stress function. The experimental results agreed with those predicted by finite element analysis and empirical equation within 2 percent error.

When one considers the property of the axisymmetry, an analysis of an axisymmetric shell subjected to unaxisymmetric loading can be employed to save time and computer memory space. If one considers the Fourier series of the circumference direction of loads and displacements, an axisymmetric tank subjected to a nonaxisymmetric load can be treated as a frame element. Using the Fourier series, the authors derived the stiffness matrix of the cylindrical shell subjected to unaxisymmetric loading by the usual finite element method, and converted the stiffness matrix of a frame element into a transfer matrix by rearranging the stiffness matrix to apply the transfer matrix method. Here the most significant purpose of this paper is to achieve the fewest number of simultaneous equations for analysing an axisymmetric shell subjected to a nonaxisymmetric load. The results of the proposed method of the analysis of the cylindrical shell subjected to a wind load and a water load show no differences when compared to the other methods.
The grid structures with welded hollow spherical joint (WHSJ) have gained increasing popularity for use in industrial buildings with suspended cranes, and usually welded with steel tube (ST). The fatigue performance of steel tube-welded hollow spherical joint (ST-WHSJ) is however not yet well characterized, and there is little research on fatigue life prediction methods of ST-WHSJ. In this study, based on previous fatigue tests, three series of specimen fatigue data with different design parameters and stress ratios were compared, and two fatigue failure modes were revealed: failure at the weld toe of the ST and the WHSJ respectively. Then, S-N curves of nominal stress were uniformed. Furthermore, a finite element model (FEM) was validated by static test, and was introduced to assess fatigue behavior with the hot spot stress method (HSSM) and the effective notch stress method (ENSM). Both methods could provide conservative predictions, and these two methods had similar results. However, ENSM, especially when using von Mises stress, had a better fit for the series with a non- positive stress ratio. After including the welding residual stress and mean stress, analyses with the local stress method (LSM) and the critical distance method (CDM, including point method and line method) were carried out. It could be seen that the point method of CDM led to more accurate predictions than LSM, and was recommended for series with positive stress ratios.

Investigating the impact of openings on the structural behavior of ferrocement I-beams with two distinct types of reinforcing metallic and non-metallic meshes is the primary goal of the current study. Up until failure, eight 250x200x2200 mm reinforced concrete I-beams were tested under flexural loadings. Depending on the kind of meshes used for reinforcement, the beams are split into two series. A control I-beam with no openings and three beams with one, two, and three openings, respectively, are found in each series. The two series are reinforced with three layers of welded steel meshes and two layers of tensar meshes, respectively, in order to maintain a constant reinforcement ratio. Structural parameters of investigated beams, including first crack, ultimate load, deflection, ductility index, energy absorption, strain characteristics, crack pattern, and failure mode were reported. The number of mesh layers, the volume fraction of reinforcement, and the kind of reinforcing materials are the primary factors that vary. This article presents the outcomes of a study that examined the experimental and numerical performance of ferrocement reinforced concrete I-beams with and without openings reinforced with welded steel mesh and tensar mesh separately. Utilizing ANSYS-16.0 software, nonlinear finite element analysis (NLFEA) was applied to illustrate how composite RC I-beams with openings behaved. In addition, a parametric study is conducted to explore the variables that can most significantly impact the mechanical behavior of the proposed model, such as the number of openings. The FE simulations produced an acceptable degree of experimental value estimation, as demonstrated by the obtained experimental and numerical results. It is also noteworthy to demonstrate that the strength gained by specimens without openings reinforced with tensar meshes was, on average, 22% less than that of specimens reinforced with welded steel meshes. For specimens with openings, this value is become on average 10%.
A theoretical research project is undertaken to develop integrated analysis and design tools for long span composite beams in modern high-rise buildings, and it aims to develop non-linear finite element models for practical design of composite beams. As the first paper in the series, this paper presents the development study as well as the calibration exercise of the proposed finite element models for simply supported composite beams. Other practical issues such as continuous composite beams, the provision of web openings for passage of building services, the partial continuity offered by the connections to columns as well as the behaviour of both unprotected and protected composite beams under fires will be reported separately. In this paper, details of the finite elements and the material models for both steel and reinforced concrete are first described, and finite element studies of composite beams with full details of test data are then presented. It should be noted that in the proposed finite element models, both steel beams and concrete slabs are modelled with two dimensional plane stress elements whose widths are assigned to be equal to the widths of concrete flanges, and the flange widths and the web thicknesses of steel beams as appropriate. Moreover, each shear connector is modelled with one horizontal spring and one vertical spring to simulate its longitudinal shear and pull-out actions based on measured load-slippage curves of push-out tests of shear connectors. The numerical results are then carefully analyzed and compared with the corresponding test results in terms of load mid-span deflection curves as well as load end-slippage curves. Other deformation characteristics of the composite beams such as stress and strain distributions across the composite cross-sections as well as distributions of shear forces and slippages in shear connectors along the beam spans are also examined in details. It is shown that the numerical results of the composite beams compare well with the test data in terms of various load-deformation characteristics along the entire deformation ranges. Hence, the proposed analysis and design tools are considered to be simple and yet effective for composite beams with practical geometrical dimensions and arrangements. Structural engineers are strongly encouraged to employ the models in their practical work to exploit the full advantages offered by composite construction.
The goal of this paper is to understand the stress-transfer mechanism of concrete-filled tubular column to H-beam connections with external T-stiffener through the finite element method and to offer basic data for the design of T-stiffener. To identify the problems of previous test results, the same shapes of the full-scale test specimens were modeled for the finite element analysis. Results of the analysis were compared with the test results. Several stress and strain indices were used to understand the stress-transfer mechanism of connection with various T-stiffeners parameters. The models of analysis with different T-stiffener are grouped into TS, TSD, and TSH series. An alternative plan that decreases the stress concentration of beam flange to horizontal stiffener connection is proposed through the elasto-plastic finite element method. The basic design idea and minimum sizes of T-stiffener were proposed based on the various indices in relation to the connection details.
