The paper concerns the modelling of rigid and semi-rigid steel-concrete composite joints under monotonic loading through use of the Abaqus program, a widespread finite element code. By comparing numerical and experimental results obtained on cruciform tests, it is shown that the proposed modelling allows a good fit of the global joint response in terms of moment-rotation law. Even the local response in terms of stresses and strains is adequately predicted. Hence, this numerical approach may represent a useful tool for attaining a better understanding of experimental results. It may also be used to perform parametric analyses and to calibrate simplified mechanical models for practical applications.
Numerical simulation of blade forming is carried out as stretch forming by an elasto-plastic finite element method. The method adopts a Lagrangian formulation, which incorporates large deformation and rotation, with a penalty method to treat the contact boundary condition. Numerical integration is done with a directional reduced integration scheme to avoid shear locking. The numerical results demonstrates various final shapes of blades which depend on the variation of the stretching force. The strain distributions in deformed blades are also obtained with the variation of the stretching force.
This paper deals with an optimal angle error reduction method of magnetic position sensor using hall effect elements. The angle detection simulation for the magnetic position sensor is performed by 3 dimensional finite element method and Taguchi method, one of the design of experiments. The magnetic position sensor is required to generate ideal sine and cosine waveforms from its hall effect elements according to rotation angle for precise angle information. However, the output signals are easy to include harmonics due to uneven magnetic field distribution from permanent magnet in the air-gap in the vicinity of hall effect elements. For the Taguchi method, three design parameters related to position of hall effect elements and shape of back yoke are selected. The characteristics of optimal magnetic position sensor are compared with those of original one in terms of simulation as well as experiment. Finally, the performances of the motor adopting original model and optimal model are represented for the purpose of verification of motor performance due to signals from magnetic position sensor.
A consistent finite element formation and analytic solutions are presented for spatial stability of thin-walled circular arch. The total potential energy is derived by applying the principle of linearized virtual work and including second order terms of finite semitangential rotations. As a result the energy functional corresponding to the semitangential rotation is obtained, in which the elastic strain energy terms are considered restrained warping effects. We have obtained analytic solution for the lateral buckling of monosymmetric thin-walled curved beam subjected to pure bending or uniform compression and it's boundary conditions are simply supported. For finite element analysis, the two node cubic Hermitian polynomials are utilized as shape Auctions. In order to illustrate the accuracy of this study, parameter studies for lateral buckling problems of circular arch are presented and compared with available solutions and numerical results analyzed by the FEM using straight beam element.
Recently, the roll forming process is one of the most widely used processes for manufacturing automotive part. In this study, flower patterns of roll forming process were designed to manufacture an ultra high strength bumper beam using the finite element analysis. Three types of flower patterns such as the basic type, the rotation type and the split type were designed based on the constant arc length forming method using the design software, UBECO Profil. Finite element analysis was performed to evaluate the suitability of designed flower patterns in terms of the longitudinal strain and the bow defect. The analytical results show that the split type represents more uniform longitudinal strain distributions and a good dimensional accuracy than other types of flower patterns.
In this paper, the performance of the IeEE 802.4 token-passing is analyzed under the assumption that all nodes have finite buffers and finite THT (token tolding time). The loads generated at nodes are assumed to be asymmetric. The priority mechanism is not considered. This paper derives an approximate matrix equation of the queue length distributin in terms of the number of nodes, frame arrival rate and mean service time of a frame in steady state. Based on the matrix equation, the mean token rotation time, the mean waiting time and the blocking probability are derived analytically. the analytic results are compared with simulation results in order to show that the deviations are small.
Natural frequencies of immersed square sections decrease due to a contribution of added mass to the movement of square sections. In this study, natural frequencies of square sections are obtained as a function of gap size between the square section and a rigid square wall using the finite element method. Additionally, they are used to extract the added mass effect on translational and rotation motions. Published information and studies on the translational and torsional vibration of square beams are also examined for practical use. D coupling of a square section is also investigated for multiple square sections. The suggested added mass estimation can be applicable to the spent fuel storage design of a pressurized light water modulated nuclear power plant.
An improved analysis model for material nonlinearity induced by elasto-plastic deformation and damage including a large strain response was proposed. The elasto-plastic-damage constitutive model based on the continuum damage mechanics approach was adopted to overcome limitations of the conventional plastic analysis theory. It can manage the anisotropic tonsorial damage evolved during the time-independent plastic deformation process of materials. Updated Lagrangian finite element formulation for elasto-plastic damage coupling problems including large deformation, large rotation and large strain problems was completed to develop a numerical model which can predict all kinds of structural nonlinearities and damage rationally. Finally a finite element analysis code for two-dimensional plane problems was developed and the applicability and validity of the numerical model was investigated through some numerical examples. Calculations showed reasonable results in both geometrical nonlinear problems due to large deformation and material nonlinearity including the damage effect.
The finite deformation with self contact problem of C. V. joint boots is analysed by using the implicit finite element code ABAQUS/Standard. It is shown that analysis results have a good agreement with experimental ones to the degree of maximum rotation angle. As an application of design modification, the effects of thickness change of the rounded part of boot model on the bending and the contact situation of deformed geometry are investigated. In this paper, the effect of the design modification in the end on the leakage is examined using 2-D finite element simulation. To solve the leakage problem of grease, the length of the small end is enlarged. From this study, it is confirmed that we can save the cost and time by applying FEM techniques to analyze and design the boot model.
In current European Standard EN 1993, the moment-rotation characteristics of beam-to-column joints made from steel with a yield stress > 460MPa are obtained from elastic design procedures. The strength of the joint basic components, such as the column web subject to local transverse compression, is thus limited to the yield resistance rather than the plastic resistance. With the recent developments of higher strength steel grades, the need for these restrictions should be revisited. However, as the strength of the steel is increased, the buckling characteristics become more significant and thus instability phenomena may govern the design. This paper summarizes a comprehensive set of finite element parametric studies pertaining to the strength behaviour of high-strength steel unstiffened I-columns in transverse compression. The paper outlines the implementation and validation of a three-dimensional finite element model and presents the relevant numerical test results. The finite element predictions are evaluated against the strength values anticipated by the EN 1993 for conventional steel columns and recommendations are made for revising the specifications.
