Floods have been known to be one of the main causes of bridge collapse. Contrary to earthquakes, flood events tend to occur repeatedly and more frequently in rainfall areas; flood-induced damage and collapse account for a significant portion of disasters in many countries. Nevertheless, in contrast to extensive research on the seismic fragility analysis for civil infrastructure, relatively little attention has been devoted to the flood-related fragility. The present study proposes a novel methodology for deriving flood fragility curves for bridges. Fragility curves are generally derived by means of structural reliability analysis, and structural failure modes are defined as excessive demands of the displacement ductility of a bridge under increased water pressure resulting from debris accumulation and structural deterioration, which are known to be the primary causes of bridge failures during flood events. Since these bridge failure modes need to be analyzed through sophisticated structural analysis, flood fragility curve derivation that would require repeated finite element analyses may take a long time. To calculate the probability of flood-induced failure of bridges efficiently, in the proposed framework, the first order reliability method (FORM) is employed for reducing the required number of finite element analyses. In addition, two software packages specialized for reliability analysis and finite element analysis, FERUM (Finite Element Reliability Using MATLAB) and ABAQUS, are coupled so that they can exchange their inputs and outputs during structural reliability analysis, and a Python-based interface for FERUM and ABAQUS is newly developed to effectively coordinate the fragility analysis. The proposed framework of flood fragility analysis is applied to an actual reinforced concrete bridge in South Korea to demonstrate the detailed procedure of the approach.
This study presents a methodology to predict the hardenability of quenched carbon steels. The equation of transient heat conduction is analyzed to formulate a cooling curve by a finite element method which incorperates coupled effects of temperature on physical properties, the metallic structures and also the latent heat by phase transformation. The volume traction of martensite and pearlite are the structural analysis for hardenability analysis. In order to demonstrate the feasibility of adopting a full quench model respectively. This procedure could be used as the database for optimal condition of heat treatment processes.
A methodology is developed and used to evaluate the response sensitivity of the thermal systems to variations in their design parameters. Technique for computing the sensitivity of temperature distributions to changes in processing parameters needed to decide the more effective laser input parameters for laser surface hardening treatment is considered. In this study, a state equation governing the heat flow in laser surface treatment is analyzed using a three-dimensional finite element method and sensitivity data of the processing parameter obtained using a direct differentiation method is applied to the sensitivity analysis. The interesting processing parameters are taken as the laser scan velocity and laser beam radius ( $r_{ b}$), and the sensitivities of the temperature T versus v and $r_{b}$ are analyzed. These sensitivity results are obtained with another parameters fixed. To verify the numerical analysis results, hardened layer dimensions (width and depth) of the numerical analysis are compared with the experimental ones.nes.

A good grasp of the failure mechanisms of resistance spot weld, widely used in joining the auto-panels, in essential to the structural/crashworthy analyses and integrity assessment of the whole auto-body. In this study, We provide an estimative model describing the failure behavior of resistance spotf weld, and apply the model to the finite element analysis of crashworthiness. First, in "Part 1-Failure Criteria", to be used for the finite element analysis of spot-welded structural panels of an auto-body, (i) a methodology for quantifying the spot weld failure and the accompanying failure criteria are presented, and (ii) the coefficients of the failure equation are determined by a munimum number of appropriate experimental tests. To achieve these, we derive the functional form of the failure envelop by limit analysis, and correlate it with the form in PAM-$CRASH^{TM}$ code, and also investigate the effect of the failure coefficients on the failure envelop form. An estimative model obtained in this Part1, as spot weld failure criteria is applied to the Macroscopic finite element analysis of autobody structural panels using PAM-$CRASH^{TM}$ code in Part 2.
The structural methodology in designing a transmission tower have been performed to assume a simple truss behavior. But there're quite differences between a simple truss behavior and a real one. A suitable explanation for a structural stability can be expressed as a semi-rigid connection instead of the assumed hinged connection. This study proposes an alternative structural analysis modelling strategy for the transmission tower design. Proposed element models are truss element model, beam element model, and combined beam-truss element model. The static finite element analysis shows that there's a moment distribution between a mainpost member and the other bracing member.
In this work, Internet Supercomputing methodology is introduced and the concept is materialized for large-scale finite element analysis. The primary resources of Internet Supercomputing are numerous idling PCs connected by Internet with no regards to their locations. Therefore, it becomes one of the most affordable ways to achieve supercomputing power unlimitedly if the appropriate parallel algorithm and the operating program are developed for this slow network environment. Under the above concept, virtual supercomputing system InterSup I is constructed and tested. To establish the InterSup I system, 64 CPU nodes, which are located in several places and connected by Internet, are conscripted, and parallel finite element software is developed for linear static analysis of structures based on the parallel multi-frontal algorithm. By the established InterSup I system, analysis of finite element structural model having around five million DOFs are solved to check the affordability and effectiveness of Internet Supercomputing.

In this study, the methodology to develop a data model for steel box girder bridge based on STEP part 104 is presented. The concept of STEP and the schema of part 104 are briefly reviewed, and then the procedure of data model standardization is described. A new data model for steel box girder bridge is developed by incorporating with not only the geometric and topological representation schema of the part 42 but also the representation structure information of the part 43 and the detailed finite element analysis information of the part 104. The prototype of integrated finite element analysis(FEA) system by interfacing STEP physical file is also presented. The applicability of developed data model for FEA is verified by preprocessor system of FEA.
This paper provides a new technique for solving the static analysis of arbitrarily shaped composite plates by using Strong Formulation Finite Element Method (SFEM). Several papers in literature by the authors have presented the proposed technique as an extension of the classic Generalized Differential Quadrature (GDQ) procedure. The present methodology joins the high accuracy of the strong formulation with the versatility of the well-known Finite Element Method (FEM). The continuity conditions among the elements is carried out by the compatibility or continuity conditions. The mapping technique is used to transform both the governing differential equations and the compatibility conditions between two adjacent sub-domains into the regular master element in the computational space. The numerical implementation of the global algebraic system obtained by the technique at issue is easy and straightforward. The main novelty of this paper is the application of the stress and strain recovery once the displacement parameters are evaluated. Computer investigations concerning a large number of composite plates have been carried out. SFEM results are compared with those presented in literature and a perfect agreement is observed.

Finite element analyses have been performed for the purpose of obtaining the robust and reliable design of engine cylinder block. Fatigue under high cycle operating loads is a primary concern and is evaluated by a probabilistic method. The robust and reliable design by a probabilistic method can provide satisfactory design conditions for the performance of the system under the influence of noise factors. Therefore, the design by this method will be desensitized to the uncontrollable noise factors. The simple methodology evaluates the distortion of main bore is proposed for the purpose of maintaining a well-controlled clearance between the crankshaft and main bores. The proposed methodology has proven a capability of predicting the distortion of the main bore under assembly, thermal, and firing loads. The calculated results are correlated well with the experimental ones.
The shear behaviour of reinforced concrete members has been studied over the past decades by various researchers, and it can be simulated by analysing shear panel elements which has been regarded as a basic element of reinforced concrete members subjected to in-plane biaxial stresses. Despite various experimental studies on shear panel element which have been conducted so far, there are still a lot of uncertainties related to what influencing factors govern the shear behaviour and affect failure mechanism in reinforced concrete members. To identify the uncertainties, a finite element analysis can be used, which enables to investigate the impact of specific variables such as the reinforcement ratio, the shear retention factor, and the material characteristics including aggregate interlock, tension stiffening, compressive softening, and shear behaviour at the crack surface. In this study, a non-linear probabilistic analysis was conducted on reinforced concrete panels using a finite element method optimized for reinforced concrete members and advanced sampling techniques so that probabilistic analysis can be performed effectively. Consequently, this study figures out what analysis methodology and input parameters have the most influence on shear behaviour of reinforced concrete panels.
