Deformation characteristics and damage evolution during warm backward extrusion of bulk AZ31 Mg alloy were investigated using finite element analyses. AZ31 Mg alloy was assumed as a hardening viscoplastic material. The tensile tests of AZ31 Mg alloy in previous experimental works showed the ductile fracture even at the warm temperature of $175^{\circ}C$. In this study, damage evolution model proposed by Lee and Dawson, which was developed based on the growth of micro voids in hardening viscoplastic materials, was combined into DEFORM 2D. Effects of forming temperature, punch speed, extrusion ratio and size of work piece on formability in warm backward extrusion as well as on mechanical properties of extruded products were examined. In general, finite element predictions matched the experimental observations and supported the analyses based on experiments. Distributions of accumulated damage predicted by the finite element simulations were effective to identify the locations of possible fracture. Finally, it was concluded that the process model, DEFORM2D combined with Lee & Dawson#s damage evolution model, was effective for the analysis of warm backward extrusion of AZ31 Mg alloys.

In this study, bearing capacities and settlement profiles of six irregularly shaped footings located on sand have been experimentally and analytically investigated under the effect of axial loading. The main variable considered in the study was the geometry of the footings. The axial loads were applied from the center of gravities of the test specimens. Consequently, the effect of footing shape on the variation of the bearing capacities and settlement profiles have been investigated in this paper. The three dimensional finite element analyses of the test specimens were conducted using the PLAXIS 3D software. The finite element model results are in acceptable agreement with the results obtained using experimental investigation. In addition, the usability of the finite element technique by design engineers to determine the bearing capacities and settlement profiles of irregularly shaped footings was investigated. From the results of the study, it was observed that the geometric properties of the footings significantly influenced the variation of the bearing capacities and settlement profiles.
Deformation behavior of pure aluminum during equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) was simulated using a three-dimensional version of the finite element method in conjunction with a constitutive model based on the dislocation density and cell evolution. The three-dimensional finite element analyses for the prediction of microstructural features, such as the variation of the dislocation density and the cell size with the number of ECAP, are reported. The calculated stress and strain and their distributions are also investigated for the route Bc ECAP processed pure aluminum. The results of finite element analyses are found to be in good agreement with experimental results for the dislocation cell size. Due to the accumulation of strain throughout the workpiece and an overall trend to saturation in cell size, a decrease of the difference in cell size with the number of passes (1~4) was predicted.
The finite element method(FEM) is proven to be an effective approximate method of structural analysis if proper element types and meshes are chosen, and recently, the method is often applied to solve complex dynamic and nonlinear problems. A properly chosen element type and mesh yields reliable results for dynamic finite element structural analysis. However, dynamic behavior of a structure may include unpredictably large strains in some parts of the structure, and using the initial mesh throughout the duration of a dynamic analysis may include some elements to go through strains beyond the elements' reliable limits. Thus, the finite element mesh for a dynamic analysis must be dynamically adaptive, and considering the rapid process of analysis in real time, the dynamically adaptive finite element mesh generating schemes must be computationally efficient. In this paper, a computationally efficient dynamically adaptive finite element mesh generation scheme for dynamic analyses of structures is described. The concept of representative strain value is used for error estimates and the refinements of meshes use combinations of the h-method(node movement) and the r-method(element division). The shape coefficient for element mesh is used to correct overly distorted elements. The validity of the scheme is shown through a cantilever beam example under a concentrated load with varying values. The example shows reasonable accuracy and efficient computing time. Furthermore, the study shows the potential for the scheme's effective use in complex structural dynamic problems such as those under seismic or erratic wind loads.
One of the major divisions in the mathematical modelling of a tubular structure is to include the effect of the transverse shear stress and rotary inertia in vibration of members. During the past three decades, problems of vibration of tubular structures have been considered by some authors, and special attention has been devoted to the Timoshenko theory. There have been considerable efforts, also, to apply the method of spectral analysis to vibration of a structure with rectangular section beams. The purpose of this paper is to compare the results of the spectrally formulated finite element analyses for the Timoshenko theory with those derived from the conventional finite element method for a tubular structure. The spectrally formulated finite element starts at the same starting point as the conventional finite element formulation. However, it works in the frequency domain. Using a computer program, the proposed formulation has been extended to derive the dynamic response of a tubular structure under an impact load.
This study develops finite element models for seismically-deficient reinforced concrete building frame retrofitted using fiber-reinforced polymer jacketing system and validates the finite element models with full-scale dynamic test for as-built and retrofitted conditions. The bond-slip effects measured from a past experimental study were modeled using one-dimensional slide line model, and the bond-slip models were implemented to the finite element models. The finite element model can predict story displacement and inter-story drift ratio with slight simulation variation compared to the measured responses from the full-scale dynamic tests.
The finite element method is wide used in simulation in the biomechanical structures, but a lack of studies concerning finite element mesh quality in biomechanics is a reality. The present study intends to analyze the importance of the mesh quality in the finite element model results from humeral structure. A sensitivity analysis of finite element models (FEM) is presented for the humeral bone and cartilage structures. The geometry of bone and cartilage was acquired from CT scan and geometry reconstructed. The study includes 54 models from same bone geometry, with different mesh densities, constructed with tetrahedral linear elements. A finite element simulation representing the glenohumeral-joint reaction force applied on the humerus during $90^{\circ}$ abduction, with external load as the critical condition. Results from the finite element models suggest a mesh with 1.5 mm, 0.8 mm and 0.6 mm as suitable mesh sizes for cortical bone, trabecular bone and humeral cartilage, respectively. Relatively to the higher minimum principal strains are located at the proximal humerus diaphysis, and its highest value is found at the trabecular bone neck. The present study indicates the minimum mesh size in the finite element analyses in humeral structure. The cortical and trabecular bone, as well as cartilage, may not be correctly represented by meshes of the same size. The strain results presented the critical regions during the $90^{\circ}$ abduction.

In this study, analytical and experimental modal analyses of a scaled bridge model are carried out to extract the dynamic characteristics such as natural frequency, mode shapes and damping ratios. For this purpose, a scaled bridge model is constructed in laboratory conditions. Three dimensional finite element model of the bridge is constituted and dynamic characteristics are determined, analytically. To identify the dynamic characteristics experimentally; Experimental Modal Analyses (ambient and forced vibration tests) are conducted to the bridge model. In the ambient vibration tests, natural excitations are provided and the response of the bridge model is measured. Sensitivity accelerometers are placed to collect signals from the measurements. The signals collected from the tests are processed by Operational Modal Analysis; and the dynamic characteristics of the bridge model are estimated using Enhanced Frequency Domain Decomposition and Stochastic Subspace Identification methods. In the forced vibration tests, excitation of the bridge model is induced by an impact hammer and the frequency response functions are obtained. From the finite element analyses, a total of 8 natural frequencies are attained between 28.33 and 313.5 Hz. Considering the first eight mode shapes, these modes can be classified into longitudinal, transverse and vertical modes. It is seen that the dynamic characteristics obtained from the ambient and forced vibration tests are close to each other. It can be stated that the both of Enhanced Frequency Domain Decomposition and Stochastic Subspace Identification methods are very useful to identify the dynamic characteristics of the bridge model. The first eight natural frequencies are obtained from experimental measurements between 25.00-299.5 Hz. In addition, the dynamic characteristics obtained from the finite element analyses have a good correlation with experimental frequencies and mode shapes. The MAC values obtained between 90-100% and 80-100% using experimental results and experimental-analytical results, respectively.

As the rate of increase in areal density of the HDD has accelerated, dynamic characteristics of the HDD actuator need to be improved with respect to the performance of the tracking servo and shock transmission. Therefore, it is important to analyze the vibration characteristic of the HDD actuator that consists of the VCM part, E-block and pivot bearing. In this paper, vibration modes of the HDD actuator are investigated the using finite element and experimental modal analyses methods. To develop a detailed finite element model, finite element models of each components of the actuator assembly are constructed and tuned to the results of the EMA. The VCM coil is modeled as an equivalent finite element model that has an orthotropic material property using auto-model updating program. Auto-model updating program with improved sensitivity based iterative method is applied to build a detailed finite element model using the result of the EMA. A detailed finite element model of the HDD actuator is then constructed and analyzed.
This paper is to discuss distribution of welding residual stresses of a ferritic low alloy steel nozzle with dissimilar metal weld using Alloy 82/182. Two dimensional (2D) thermo-mechanical finite element analyses are carried out to simulate multi-pass welding process on the basis of the detailed and fabrication data. On performing the welding analysis generally, the characteristics on the heat input and heat transfer of weld are affected on the weld residual stress analyses. Thermal analyses in the welding heat cycle process is very important process in weld residual stress analyses. Therefore, heat is rapidly input to the weld pass material, using internal volumetric heat generation, at a rate which raises the peak weld metal temperature to $2200^{\circ}C$ and the base metal adjacent to the weld to about $1400^{\circ}C$. These are approximately the temperature that the weld metal and surrounding base materials reach during welding. Also, According to the various ways of appling the weld heat source, the predicted residual stress results are compared with measured axial, hoop and radial through-wall profiles in the heat affected zone of test component. Also, those results are compared with those of full 3-dimensional simulation.
