A finite element computer code for short-term analysis of steel-concrete composite structures is extended to study long-term effects under service loads, in the present work. Long-term effects are important in engineering design because they influence stress and strain distribution of the structural system and therefore contribute to the increment of deflections in these structures. For creep analysis, a rheological model based on a Kelvin chain, with elements placed in series, was employed. The parameters of the Kelvin chain were obtained using Dirichlet series. Creep and shrinkage models, proposed by the CEB FIP 90, were used. The shear-lag phenomenon that takes place at the concrete slab is usually neglected or not properly taken into account in the formulation of beam-column finite elements. Therefore, in this work, a three-dimensional numerical model based on the assemblage of shell finite elements for representing the steel beam and the concrete slab is used. Stud shear connectors are represented for special beam-column elements to simulate the partial interaction at the slab-beam interface. The two-dimensional representation of the concrete slab permits to capture the non-uniform shear stress distribution in the horizontal plane of the slab due to shear-lag phenomenon. The model is validated with experimental results of two full-scale continuous composite beams previously studied by other authors. Results are given in terms of displacements, bending moments and cracking patterns in order to shown the influence of long-term effects in the structural response and also the potentiality of the present numerical code.
The Galerkin formulation of the finite element method is applied to the integral law of the first-order form of the one-group neutron transport equation in one-dimensional spherical geometry. Piecewise linear or quadratic Lagrange polynomials are utilized in the integral law for the angular flux to establish a set of linear algebraic equations. Numerical analyses are performed for the scalar flux distribution in a heterogeneous sphere as well as for the criticality problem in a uniform sphere. For the criticality problems in the uniform sphere, the results of the finite element method, with the use of continuous finite elements in space and angle, are compared with the exact solutions. In the heterogeneous problem, the scalar flux distribution obtained by using discontinuous angular and spatical finite elements is in good agreement with that from the ANISN code calculation.
This paper presents a comparative study of analytical method and finite element method (FEM) for analysis of a continuous contact problem. The problem consists of two elastic layers loaded by means of a rigid circular punch and resting on semi-infinite plane. It is assumed that all surfaces are frictionless and only compressive normal tractions can be transmitted through the contact areas. Firstly, analytical solution of the problem is obtained by using theory of elasticity and integral transform techniques. Then, finite element model of the problem is constituted using ANSYS software and the two dimensional analysis of the problem is carried out. The contact stresses under rigid circular punch, the contact areas, normal stresses along the axis of symmetry are obtained for both solutions. The results show that contact stresses and the normal stresses obtained from finite element method (FEM) provide boundary conditions of the problem as well as analytical results. Also, the contact areas obtained from finite element method are very close to results obtained from analytical method; disagree by 0.03-1.61%. Finally, it can be said that there is a good agreement between two methods.
A new technique is proposed to obtain more effective screening efficiency against the ground vibration using intermittent geofoam (IF) in-filled trench. The numerical analysis is performed by employing two-dimensional finite element method under dynamic condition. Vertically oscillated strip foundation is considered as the vibration source. In presence of the ground vibration, the vertical displacements at different locations (pick-up points) along the ground surface are captured to determine the amplitude reduction factor (ARF), which helps to assess the efficiency of the vibration screening technique. The efficiency of IF over continuous geofoam (CF) in-filled vibration barriers is assessed by varying the geofoam density, the location of trench and the frequency of excitation. The results from this study indicate that a significant reduction in ARF can be achieved by using intermittent geofoam as compared to continuous geofoam. Further, it is noticed that the efficiency of IF increases with an increase in the frequency of the vibrating source. These encouraging results put forward the potential of utilising intermittent geofoam as a vibration screening material.
A three-dimensional model was developed in order to simulate heat and fluid flow of a continuous casting billet. The model was coded with the general-purpose CFD program FIDAP, using the finite element method. The present model consists of 2 individual calculation schemes, named model 1 and model 2. Mold region only was calculated to check the pouring stream through submerged nozzle with model 1. Entire region, which consists of mold, secondary cooling, radiation cooling was calculated to predict crater end position, temperature profile and solid shell profile(model 2). Standard $k-{\bullet}\hat{A}$ turbulence model has been applied to simulate the turbulent flow induced by submerged nozzle. Enthalpy method was adopted for the latent heat of solidification. Fluid flow in mushy zone was treated using variable viscosity approach. The more casting speed and superheat increased, the more metallurgical length increased. The shell thickness at the mold exit is proved to be mainly controlled by superheat by the present simulation. It may be concluded that the present model can be successfully applied far the prediction of heat and fluid flow behavior in the continuous casting process.

A modal transducer in two-dimensional structure can be implemented by varying the distributed transducer's gain spatially. In this paper, a method based on finite element method is developed for optimizing spatial gain distribution of PVDF transducer to create the modal transducer for specific modes. Using this concept, one can design the modal transducer in two-dimensional structure having arbitrary geometry and boundary conditions. As a practical means for implementing this continuous gain distribution without repoling die PVDF film, the gain distribution is approximated by optimizing gain-weights of interface circuit. The whole spatial area of the PVDF film is divided into several electrode segments and the signals from each segment are properly weighted and summed by interface circuit. This corresponds to the approximation of a continuous function using discrete values. The electrode partition is optimized using the genetic algorithm. Gain-weights are optimized using the simplex search method. A modal sensor for first to fourth modes of aluminum plate is designed using PVDF film with gain-weighted interface circuit. Various lamination angles of PVDF film are taken into consideration to utilize the anisotropy of the PVDF film. Performance of the optimized' PVDF sensor is demonstrated by numerical simulations..
The consolidation behavior of Sri Lankan peaty clay is analyzed using an elasto-viscoplastic model. The model can describe the secondary compression behavior as a continuous process and it can also account for the effect of structural degradation on the consolidation analysis. The analysis takes into account all the main features involved in the process of peat consolidation, namely, finite strain, variable permeability, and the secondary compression. The material parameters required for the analysis and the procedures to evaluate them, using both standard laboratory and field tests, are explained. Initially, the model performance is assessed by comparing the predicted and the observed peat consolidation behavior under laboratory conditions. The results indicate that the model is capable of predicting the observed creep settlements and the effect of layer thickness on the settlement analysis of peaty clay. Then, the model is applied to predict the consolidation behavior of peaty clay under different field conditions. In this context, firstly, the one-dimensional field consolidation of peaty clay, brought about by the construction of compacted earth fill, is predicted. Then, the two-dimensional peat foundation response upon embankment loading is simulated. A good agreement is seen in the comparison of the predicted results with the field observations.
The strong continuous fiber reinforced metal matrix composites (MMCs) are recently used in aerospace and transportation applications as an advanced material due to its high strength and light weight. Unidirectional fiber-metal matrix composites have superior mechanical properties along the longitudinal direction. However, the applicability of continuous fiber reinforced MMCs is somewhat limited due to their relatively poor transverse properties. Therefore, the transverse properties of MMCs are significantly influenced by the properties of the fiber/matrix interface. In order to be able to utilize these MMCs effectively and with safety, it must be determined their elastic plastic behaviors at the interface. In this study, the interfacial stress states of transversely loaded unidirectional fiber reinforced metal matrix composites investigated by using elastic-plastic finite element analysis. Different fiber volume fractions $(5-60\%)$ were studied numerically. The interlace was treated as three thin layer (with different properties) with a finite thickness between the fiber and the matrix. The fiber is modeled as transversely isotropic linear-elastic, and the matrix as isotropic elastic-plastic material. Using proposed model, the effects of the interface region and fiber arrangement in MMCs on the distributions of stress and strain are evaluated. The stress distributions of a thin multi layer interface have much less changes compared with conventional perfect interface. The analyses were based on a two-dimensional generalized plane strain model of a cross-section of an unidirectional composite by the ANSYS finite element analysis code.
Precast concrete slab track is a track structure to be installed by transporting and assembling precast concrete slabs manufactured at the factory. This method can improve concrete quality, provide easy maintenance and reduce construction time, compared with in-situ concrete track. However, the concrete slabs being continuously connected in longitudinal direction, due to the temperature change between summer and winter, the openings at slab joints have occurred. Thus, in this study, to identify the cause of this opening of slab joint, the joint opening caused by temperature drop in the longitudinally continuous precast concrete slab track has been predicted using three-dimensional finite element analysis, and compared with field measurements. Based on the proven model, the slab joint opening, and the stress pattern of concrete slab and steel reinforcement according to concrete slab-base friction properties, concrete-reinforcement bond properties, and prestressing were analyzed.

This paper deals with approximate analytical solutions for the two-region one-dimensional model describing the charging process of stratified thermal storage tanks at variable inlet temperature with momentum-induced mixing. An arbitrarily increasing inlet temperature is decomposed into inherent step changes and intervals of continuous change. Each continuous interval is approximated as a finite number of piecewise linear functions, which admits an analytical solution for perfectly mixed region. Using the Laplace transform, the temperature profiles in plug flow region with both the semi-infinite and adiabatic ends are successfully derived in terms of well-defined functions. The effect of end condition on the solution proves to be negligible under the practical operating conditions. For a Quadratic variation of inlet temperature, the approximate solution employing a moderate number of pieces agrees excellently with the exact solution.
