This study examined the dynamic characteristics of the gate to identify the optimal gate installation direction according to the installation direction. A 1:31 scale model was constructed for a 47.5m prototype gate using acrylic. The scaled weights were tuned by adding lead weights. The first step was to measure the natural frequencies of the model gates, and compare them with finite-element analysis of the prototypes as a calibration. The scaled model was tested in a 1.6 m wide concrete flume for two orientations to determine the effects of the gate orientation on structural vibrations. Vertical vibrations were measured under a range of operational conditions, including a range of bottom opening heights and different upstream and downstream water levels. For large bottom opening heights in the normal direction, relatively large vibrations were induced by vortices shed at the plate bottom that would strike the horizontal truss member. This phenomenon was avoided in the reverse direction. For small bottom opening heights in the normal direction, these vibrations were caused by a suction force that developed at the gate bottom. The gate model in the reverse direction was preferred because of its low overall vibrational response under general gate opening and flow level combinations.
The selection of the support system is an important design parameter in design and construction of the tunnel using the new Australian tunnel method. It is a common practice to select the support based on the rock mass grade, in which the rock mass is classified into five rock groups. The method is applicable if the characteristics of the rock mass are uniform in the direction of tunnel excavation. However, such case is seldom encountered in practice and not applicable when the properties vary along the longitudinal direction. This study performs comprehensive three dimensional finite difference analyses to investigate the ground deformation pattern for cases in which the rock mass properties change in the direction of the tunnel axis. The numerically calculated displacements at the tunnel crown show that the displacement is highly dependent on the stiffness contrast of the rock masses. The results strongly indicate the need to select the support type $0.5{\sim}1.0D$ before the rock mass boundary. The paper proposes a new guideline for selecting the support type based the results of the analyses.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of rigidity of post core systems on stress distribution by the theoretical technique, finite element stress-analysis method. Three-dimensional finite element models simulating an endodontically treated maxillary central incisor restored with a zirconia ceramic crown were prepared and 1.5 mm ferrule height was provided. Each model contained cortical bone, trabecular bone, periodontal ligament, 4 mm apical root canal filling, and post-and-core. Six combinations of three parallel type post (zirconia ceramic, glass fiber, and stainless steel) and two core (Paracore and Tetric ceram) materials were evaluated, respectively. A 50 N static occlusal load was applied to the palatal surface of the crown with a $60^{\circ}$angle to the long axis of the tooth. The differences in stress transfer characteristics of the models were analyzed. von Mises stresses were chosen for presentation of results and maximum displacement and hydrostatic pressure were also calculated. An increase of the elastic modulus of the post material increased the stress, but shifted the maximum stress location from the dentin surface to the post material. Buccal side of cervical region (junction of core and crown) of the glass fiber post restored tooth was subjected to the highest stress concentration. Maximum von Mises stress in the remaining radicular tooth structure for low elastic modulus resin core (29.21 MPa) was slightly higher than that for high elastic modulus resin core (29.14 MPa) in case of glass fiber post. Maximum displacement of glass fiber post restored tooth was higher than that of zirconia ceramic or stainless steel post restored tooth.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of different thread designs on the marginal bone stresses around dental implant. Materials and methods: Standard ITI implant(ITI Dental Implant System; Straumann AG, Waldenburg, Switzerland), 4.1 mm in diameter and 10 mm in length, was selected as control. Test implants of four different thread patterns were created based on control implant, i.e. maintaining all geometrical design of control implant except thread pattern. Four thread designs used in test implants include (1) small V-shape screw (model A), (2) large V-shape screw (model B), (3) buttress screw (model C), and (4) trapezoid screw (model D). Surface area for unit length of implant was 14.4 $mm^2$ (control), 21.7 (small V-shape screw), 20.6 (large V-shape screw), 17.0 (buttress screw) and 28.7 $mm^2$ (trapezoid screw). Finite element models of implant/bone complex were created using an axisymmetric scheme with the use of NISA II/DISPLAY III (Engineering Mechanics Research Corporation, Troy, MI, USA). A load of 100 N applied to the central node on the crown top either in parallel direction or at 30 degree to the implant axis (in order to apply non-axial load to the implant NKTP type 34 element was employed). Quantification and comparison of the peak stress in the marginal bone of each implant model was made using a series of regression analyses based on the stress data calculated at the 5 reference points which were set at 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8 and 1.0 mm from implant wall on the marginal bone surface. Results: Results showed that although severe stress concentration on the marginal bone cannot be avoided a substantial reduction in the peak stress is achievable using different thread design. The peak marginal bone stresses under vertical loading condition were 7.84, 6.45, 5.96, 6.85, 5.39 MPa for control and model A, B, C and D, respectively. And 29.18, 26.45, 25.12, 27.37, 23.58 MPa when subject to inclined loading. Conclusion: It was concluded that the thread design is an important influential factor to the marginal bone stresses.

If a type IP-2 transport package were to be subjected to a free drop test and a penetration test under the normal conditions of transport, it should prevent a loss or dispersal of the radioactive contents and a more than 20% increase in the maximum radiation level at any external surface of the package. In this paper, we suggested the analytic method to evaluate the structural safety of a type IP-2 transport package using a thick steel plate for a structure part and a bolt for tying a bolt. Using an analysis a loss or dispersal of the radioactive contents and a loss of shielding integrity were confirmed for two kinds of type IP-2 transport packages to transport radioactive waste drums from a waste facility to a temporary storage site in a nuclear power plant. Under the free drop condition the maximum average stress at the bolts and the maximum opening displacement of a lid were compared with the tensile stress of a bolt and the steps in a lid, which were made to avoid a streaming radiation in the shielding path, to evaluate a loss or dispersal of radioactive waste contents. Also a loss of shielding integrity was evaluated using the maximum decrease in a shielding thickness. To verify the impact dynamic analysis for free drop test condition and evaluate experimentally the safety of two kinds of type IP-2 transport packages, free drop tests were conducted with various drop directions. For the tests we examined the failure of bolts and the deformation of flange to evaluate a loss or dispersal of radioactive material and measured the shielding thickness using a ultrasonic thickness gauge to assess a loss of shielding integrity. The strains and accelerations acquired from tests were compared with those by analyses to verify the impact dynamic analysis. The analytic results were larger than the those of test so that the analysis showed the conservative results. Finally, we evaluated the safety of the type IP-2 transport package under the stacking test condition using a finite element analysis. Under the stacking test condition, the maximum Tresca stress of the shielding material was 1/3 of the yielding stress. Two kinds of a type IP-2 transport package were safe for the free drop test condition and the stacking test condition.

In the current study, the engineering behaviour of prebored and precast steel pipe piles was examined from a series of full-scale field measurements by conducting static pile load tests, dynamic pile load tests (EOID and restrike tests) and Class-A and Class-C1 type numerical analysis. The study includes the pile load - settlement relations, allowable pile capacity and shear stress transfer mechanism. Compared to the allowable pile capacity obtained from the static pile load tests, the dynamic pile load tests and the numerical simulation showed surprisingly large variations. Overall among these the restrike tests displayed the best results, however the reliability of the predictions from the numerical analysis was lower than those estimated from the dynamic pile load tests. The allowable pile capacity obtained from the EOID tests and the restrike tests indicated 20.0%-181.0% (avg: 69.3%) and 48.2%-181.1% (avg: 92.1%) of the corresponding measured values from the static pile loading tests, respectively. Furthermore, the computed results from the Class-A type analysis showed the largest scatters (37.1%-210.5%, avg: 121.2%). In the EOID tests, a majority of the external load were carried by the end bearing pile capacity, however, similar skin friction and end bearing capacity in magnitude were mobilised in the restrike tests. The measured end bearing pile capacity from the restrike tests were smaller than was measured from the EOID tests. The present study has revealed that if the impact energy is not sufficient in a restrike test, the end bearing pile capacity most likely will be underestimated. The shear stresses computed from the numerical analysis deviated substantially from the measured pile force distributions. It can be concluded that the engineering behaviour of the pile is heavily affected if a slime layer exists near the pile tip, and that the smaller the stiffness of the slime and the thicker the slime, the greater the settlement of the pile.

The reliable sloshing assessment methods for LNG CCS(cargo containment system) are important to satisfy the structural strength of the systems. Multiphase fluid flow of LNG and Gas Compressibility may have a large effect on excited pressures and structural response. Impinging jet model has been introduced to simulate the impact of the LNG sloshing and analyze structural response of LNG CCS as a practical FSI(fluid structure interaction) method. The practical method based on fluid structure interaction analysis is employed in order to evaluate the structural strength in actual scale for Mark III CCS. The numerical model is based on an Euler model that employs the CVFEM(control volume based finite element method). It includes the particle motion of gas to simulate not only the interphase interaction between LNG liquid and gas and the impact load on the LNG insulation box. The analysis results by proposed method are evaluated and discussed for an effectiveness of FSI analysis method.

Coastal structures, constructed for preventing coastal slope erosion, often causes the scour on the boundary between the coastal structure and the sea-bed, which might lead to collapse of coastal structures. To prevent the collapse, the usual upright block type coastal structures can be modified to other forms or systems of coastal structures. To validate the performance of the proposed systems, it is necessary to conduct high cost hydraulic experiments. If numerical modeling can be performed prior to the hydraulic experiments and the performance of the proposed systems is analyzed numerically in advance, the expenses can be reduced significantly by optimizing the number of cases for conducting the experiments. In this study, a fluid-structure interaction analysis procedure is proposed for modeling the hydraulic experiments of costal structures using the finite element package, LS-DYNA. As can be found in the usual hydraulic experiments, fluid velocities of potential scour locations are monitored and analyzed in detail for four types of coastal structures, block, step, trapezoid and rubble mound.
The fuel pump, which is used for an aircraft, was first developed in Korea through the Civil-Military Dual Components Development Program. The BLDC motor type, which is superior to the DC brush motor when considering efficiency, endurance, and explosive environmental characteristics, was applied to the fuel pump given its capacity and operating condition. The magnetic flux of the permanent magnet was analyzed based on the magnet flux density equation, using the Maxwell equation and the environmental condition. The motor performance, according to the load, was analyzed using the finite element method in order to design validation. The motor assembly was developed by designing the motor drive and the EMI filters. The performance test results of the motor assembly for the fuel boost pump were consistent with the analysis.

In this paper, a simulation method of the internal winding fault is proposed to calculate winding current and electromagnetic force in a distribution power transformer by suing FEM program. The model of the transformer is a single phase, 60[Hz], 1[MVA], 22.9[kV]/220[V], cable-type winding. The short-circuit current and electromagnetic force are calculated by FEM(Finite Element Method) program(Flux2D) and the results we verified with theoretical formula and PSPICE program. The simulation results are fairly good agreement with the other verified methods within 5[%] error rate. The turn-to-turn short-circuit current is 500 times of the rated current and the electromagnetic force is about $20{\sim}200times$. The method presented in this study may serve as one of the useful tools in the electromagnetic force analysis of the transformer winding behavior under the short circuit condition for design of the structure.
