This study was intended as an investigation of characteristics of background site atmospheric respirable particulate matters(RPM), and fine particles(<2.5 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$). The particle size distributions during the phenomenon of Yellow Sand(YS) occurs from April, 2001. Atmospheric aerosol particulate matter was directly collected on the Jeju island between 1 to 30, April, 2001 using an eight-stage cascade impacter(particle size range: 0.43-11 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$), and cyclone separator(cut size: 2.5, 10 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$). The episode of YS observed in background monitoring site, Kosan and appeared 2 times at sampling period. The mass concentrations of fine and coarse particles for YS episode were 34.2 and 59.6 $\mu\textrm{g}$/㎥, respectively, which were significantly increased amounts compared to 13.3 and 13.0 $\mu\textrm{g}$/㎥ for NonYS(NYS). Most size distributions had two peaks, one at 0.43∼.65 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and the other at 3.3${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$4.7 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. The result of analysis of water-soluble ion component indicated that sulfate was mainly ion component, but nitrate and calcium ion was significantly increased at the YS episode.
The knowledge of grain growth of carbide particles is very important for manufacturing micrograined cemented carbides. In the present study, continuous and discontinuous grain growth in WC-Co and WC-VC-Co cemented carbides is investigated using the Monte Carlo computer simulation technique. The Ostwald ripening process (solution/re-precipitation) and the grain boundary migration process are assumed in the simulation as the grain growth mechanism. The effects of liquid phase fraction, grain boundary energy and implanted coarse grain are examined. At higher liquid phase content, mass transfer via solid/liquid interfaces plays a major role in grain growth. Growth rate of the implanted grain was higher than that of the matrix grains through solution/re-precipitation and coalescence with neighboring grains. The results of these simulations qualitatively agree with experimental ones and suggest that distribution of liquid phase and carbide particle/carbide grain boundary energy as well as contamination by coarse grain are important factors controlling discontinuous grain growth in WC-Co and WC-VC-Co cemented carbides. The contamination by coarse grains must by avoided in the manufacturing process of fine grain cemented carbides, especially with low Co.
Atmospheric concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were measured at the Chonbuk National University located in Jeonju, four times between June and November 2002, each time for five days. Twenty-four compounds including five alkyl PAHs and byphenyl were analyzed. Average total concentration of 24 PAHs was 85 $\pm$ 15 ng/$m^3$ and about 94% of PAHs existed in the gas phase. On an average, naphthalene accounted for about 30% of the total PAHs concentration. The gas/particle partitioning was not much varied during the measurement period. High molecular weight PAHs with five and six rings were primarily associated with fine particles less than 1 $\mu$m. Lower molecular weight PAHs were evenly distributed in fine and coarse particles so that their distribution was similar to that of TSP.
Asphalt pavements are generally composed of fine and coarse aggregates, bitumen, and modifier. Asphalt pavement wear particles (APWPs) are produced by friction between the road surface and the tire tread, and they flow into the environment such as rivers and oceans. Model APWPs were prepared and a single APWP of 212-500 (S-APWP) and 500-1000 ㎛ (L-APWP) was analyzed using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) to investigate inhomogeneity in the compositions of the APWPs. The reference TGA thermogram was built using thermograms of the raw materials and formulation of the model asphalt pavement. The compositions of the APWPs were different from each other. Ash contents of the APWPs were lower than expected. Inhomogeneity in the total contents of bitumen and modifier was more severe than that in the other components. The inhomogeneity of the S-APWPs was more severe than that of the L-APWPs.
During the period from Mar. 1985 to Feb. 1988, airborne particulate matters were collected and size fractionated by the ANdersen high volume air sampler in Seoul. The concentrations of several heavy metals (Pb, Cu, Zn, Fe, Mn) and benzo(a)pyrene were determined to investigate the size distributions and seasonal variations. And with respect to seven components in the total suspended particulate (TSP), the factor analysis was performed for three groups such as the coarse particles (> 2 $\mu$m), fine particles (< $\mu$m) and TSP. As a result of factor analysis by using the varimax method, the chemical components in the TSP were able to characterize with two principal factors. The first factor, F1 was considered to be a factor indicating the contribution of natural sources and the second factor, F2 was a factor indicating the degree of artificial sources. Each components in the TSP was divided into two main groups of components originated from soil and/or road dust and pollutants originated from automobiles and/or human work.
In order to obtain the superior refractory setter having better spalling resistance, cordierite was synthesized from domestic raw materials. Raw mixtures were fired between 125$0^{\circ}C$ and 140$0^{\circ}C$, and qualitative determination of crytallization was investigated by x-ray diffraction analysis. The results obtained are as follows; 1) The optimum batch composition of synthesized cordierite is 80.5% of Hadong kaolin (pink), 14% of Kyulsung tromolite talc and 5.5% of magnesia clinker, and the firing temperature is 1375$^{\circ}C$. 2) The composition of the refractory setter which exhibits the best values for the thermal properties is 40% of synthesized cordierite, 30% of kaolin chamotte(contains more than 60% of mullite), and 30% of Japanese clay. 3) The optimum particle size distribution of ternary mixture consists of 50% of coarse articles (3.327-1.168mm), 25% of intermediate particles (1.168-0.208mm) and 25% of fine particles (0.208-0.000mm).
The characteristics of particulate matter made from daily cooking at a Korean residential apartment house with three dwellers had been investigated for about 3 months. All data were recorded by an optical particle counter every minute at the kitchen. Types of cooking such as boiling, frying, and grilling that performed in the house were listed. Boiling only was used in 32% cases among total 234 meals. Frying and grilling were 14% and 11%, respectively. From an initial indoor particulate matter smaller than 10 ㎛ in diameter, the increases due to cooking are reported by size. In case of boiling, PM at 1-10 ㎛ size and under 1 ㎛ size little increased. Normally, particles from oil or combustion in a process of frying or grilling increased indoor PM. In a case of grilling, particle mass concentration in a region of 1-10 ㎛ in diameter increased as much as 295 ㎍/㎥. Mass concentration of particles smaller than 1 ㎛ increased as much as 33 ㎍/㎥.
1. Stage crushing by jaw crusher, steel mortar, and ball mill in turn has shown an inclination to increase the distribution of andalusite in coarse particles as well as to increase that of micas in fine particles. 2. Water elutriation was effective for the removal of muscovite and magnetic separation was effective for that of Mg-Fe micas such as biotte and chlorite. The process of concentration and that of purification are diagramatized respectively as follows: Concentration; Raw andalusite${\lightarrow}$Crushing${\lightarrow}$Screening${\lightarrow}$Water elutriation${\lightarrow}$Magnetic separation Purification; Concentrated andalusite${\lightarrow}$Calcination${\lightarrow}$Ball milling${\lightarrow}$Screening${\lightarrow}$Water elutriation${\lightarrow}$Magnetic separation${\lightarrow}$Acid washing.
This paper presented on an environment estimation of cutting fluid which is a mouse model of acute bacterial rhinosinusitis using cutting fluid in grinding and cutting. Above results will be remarked the necessity of friendly environmental cutting skill when it had used in workshop. The results of a mouse experimental using cutting fluid showed that it are occurred to the respiratory organs sickness. Also cutting fluid are occurred to hurtfulness a person when it used to grinding and cutting in workshop. Also, the results of grinding experiments in avitation materials showed that surface roughness are superior to more emulsion type oil than vegetable type oil according to increase of the depth of cut. Grinding force are similar to both emulsion type oil and vegetable type oil.
The paper concentrates on an experimental study of the pressure drop in double-layered packed beds formed by glass spheres, having the configuration of horizontal and vertical stratification. Both single-phase and two-phase flow tests are performed. The pressure drop during the test is recorded and the measured data are compared with those of homogeneous beds consisting of mono-size particles. The results show that for the horizontally stratified bed with fine particles atop coarse particles, the pressure drop in top layer is found higher than those of homogenous bed consisting of the same smaller size particles, while the measured pressure drop of bottom part is similar with those of similar homogenous bed. But for the homologous bed with upside-down structure, the stratification has little or no effect on the pressure drop of the horizontally stratified bed, and the pressure drop of each layer is almost same as that of homogeneous bed packed with corresponding spheres. Additionally, in vertically stratified bed, the pressure drops on the left and right side is almost equal and between those in homogeneous beds. It is speculated that vertically stratified structure may lead to lateral flow which redistributes the flow rate in different parts of packed bed.
