Background: Korea National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) is operated as a social insurance system in which people pay a portion of their monthly income as insurance premiums and receive benefits when they experience illness or injury. Since 2005, the national health insurance remained surplus accumulating cumulative reserves each year. However, as of 2018, NHIS revenue recorded 62.11 trillion won and spending of 62.29 trillion won. The deterioration of NHIS finances is expected to accelerate with the aging population, income growth, new medical technology development, and enhanced security policies. Methods: To examine the financial health and sustainability of NHIS, we estimated the future revenue and spending until 2030 using the data from Korea Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service statistical yearbook. 2004-2018 average percentage change in NHIS revenue and spending was calculated. We estimated the future NHIS financial status using two methods. In the first method, we calculated the revenue and spending of the future NHIS by applying the 2004-2018 average percentage change to the subsequent years consecutively. In the second method, we estimated the future NHIS financial status after adjusting for the predicted demographic changes such as the aging population and declining birth rate in South Korea. Results: The estimates from this study suggest that the NHIS's cumulative reserves will run out by 2024. Conclusion: In terms of spending on current health insurance, there should be a search for ways of more efficient spending and funding options.
The purposes of this study were to examine low-income households' financial statuses and the socio-economic characteristics of single-person and non-single person households according to the financial indexes used for evaluating financial security and growth status developed based on financial ratios. Using 2009 KLIPS(Korean Labor & Income Panel Survey) data collected by the Korean Labor Institute, the satisfaction levels from the indexes were analyzed and compared between the two household types. The results showed that 46.0% of single-person households were not satisfactory in terms of all financial growth indexes but were partially satisfactory in terms of all financial security indexes. These householders tended to be females and in the their 70s, who lived in Seoul or in a suburb of Seoul, Korea. They reported problems with a lack of financial growth possibilities. 47.0% of non-single person households were not satisfactory in terms of all financial growth indexes but were partially satisfactory in terms of all financial security indexes. These householders tended to be males in their 60s and 70s with no job who were living in Seoul or in a suburb of Seoul, Korea. They reported having low level of liquidity and high level of debt redemption. 42.6% of single-person households were not satisfactory in terms of both financial security and growth indexes partially. These householders tended to be females in their 20s or 70s who were living in rural areas. They reported problems related to an adverse balance between household income and expenditures and a large scale of debt. 43.1% of non-single households were not satisfactory in terms of both financial security and growth indexes partially. These householders tended to be males in their 60s or 70s and homeowners. They reported problem related to an adverse balance of household income and expenditures and high a level of housing expenditures and liquidity. The research findings have implication for policy makers considering financial support programs and welfare programs for low-income householders, considering the recent changes in households structures.
Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to study whether the adoption of Six Sigma quality management by a firm positively affects its financial performance. The correlation between the duration of Six Sigma implementation period and the financial status of the firm is investigated as well. Methods: We conduct the analysis using data from Manufacturing Industry Productivity Panel Survey 2013 provided by Korea Productivity Center and Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. Propensity score matching is used to reduce sample selection bias of observational study. Furthermore, we use multiple linear regression in order to study the relationship between the implementation of Six Sigma quality management and financial performance. The return on assets and ratio of net income to net sales are considered as dependent variable and implementation of Six Sigma as independent variable. Results: The indication of this analysis is that implementation of Six Sigma quality management does not significantly enhance financial status. The firms that adopted Six Sigma quality management were categorized into three groups according to the implementation period. Comparison of each group with the firms that do not adopt Six Sigma quality management does not show statistically significant enhancement of financial status. Conclusion: In conclusion, both adoption and duration of six sigma quality management do not affect financial performance significantly.
Guided by the exchange model, altruistic model, intergenerational solidarity theory, and cultural contexts, this study explored the determinants of financial intergenerational transfers between older parents and adult children in South Korea. We examined 18,820 parent-child dyads by using random-effects models on the first wave of the Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing (KLoSA) data. Findings showed that downward financial intergenerational transfers were consistent with the self-interest exchange model but upward transfers did not support microeconomic theories. Family solidarity theory was generally supported by downward transfers but geographical proximity was not positively associated with upward transfers. Lastly, cultural contextual variables such as marital status, birth order, and sex of a child were found to be significant. Parents tended to both provide and receive more financial support from unmarried children than from married children. Within the same marital status, the hierarchy existed in order of the first-born son, the second or later sons, and daughters when it came to downward financial transfers. Regarding upward financial transfers, the preference in order was more complicated. The findings of this study help in understanding the intergenerational financial transfers in the Korean context.
The study aims at investigating the causal relationships among leisure expenditures, leisure activity participation and leisure satisfaction of adult consumers. Data were collected from 415 adult consumers in Ulsan. ANOVA, multiple regression, and path analysis were used for the statistical analysis. The results indicated that marital status, household income and subject's attitude toward leisure had significant impacts on leisure expenditures, while their satisfaction with financial status, household income, leisure plan, their attitudes toward leisure and personal acquaintanceship significantly affected leisure activity participation. To leisure satisfaction, their satisfaction with financial status, the attitudes toward leisure, leisure expenditures and leisure activity participation were positively related, and leisure plan was negatively related. The results of path analysis showed that marital status, household income, the satisfaction with financial status, their attitude toward leisure, leisure plan, personal acquaintanceship, leisure expenditures, and leisure activity participation had direct or indirect effects on leisure satisfaction.
The purpose of the study was to provide the informations about the economic status of elderly households. Utilizing the 1996 national household data, economic status was investigated by the components of two financial statements: the income and expense statement and the balance sheet statement. Thus it included incomes, consumption, propensity to consume, savings(financial assets), debt amount and net-savings. The elderly households were compared with the nonelderly households. The subgroups of the elderly were also compared. They were divided based on the employment status of the head and household composition. The results showed that the economic status of the elderly was worse compared to the nonelderly. There were also variations among the subgroups of the elderly households. In general, the economic status of retired households and single households were worse than those of employed households and of the households composed of couple and the elderly living with children.

Purpose: In this paper, we investigate whether the endeavors for 6 sigma quality management by a firm have positive effects on its financial performance and the length of 6 sigma implemented period affects its financial status. Methods: We conduct the analysis using the data from Workplace Panel Survey 2009. We use multiple linear regression in order to analyze the relationship between the efforts for quality management and financial performance. Specifically, the return on assets (ROA) and return on equity (ROE) are investigated as dependent variables and the efforts for quality management as independent variable. The Box-Cox transformation and Cook's distance are also used. Results: As a result of the analysis, the indication is that companies that put effect into the six sigma quality management have a positive result in its financial status. In detail, the efforts for six sigma quality management have positive effects on total asset turnover ratio and six sigma implemented period on net income to net sales ratio. Additionally, companies with longer(shorter) period of six sigma program have more (less) improvement in its financial status. Conclusion: It can be concluded that the company's efforts for quality management positively influence financial performance.

The purpose of this study was to emphasize the household financial education as a part of family life education, especially when provided at local community level; it also examines diverse measures by which to deliver such education. To this end, the current study focuses on the education programs of a healthy family support center, which has been established as a representative transmission system. The current status of its operations was examined, and practical measures by which to stimulate the delivery of financial education within that center were derived. In more detail, previous studies inside and outside of Korea were examined, and the current status of financial education included in the area of family life education was assessed; as a result of these assessments, the definition and objectives of financial education as family life education were adjusted. The limits of financial education that has been delivered thus far were reviewed, with the aim of proposing measures by which to sufficiently stimulate the delivery of financial education programs-programs that ultimately reflect the healthy family philosophy. This study proposes four specific measures by which to stimulate financial education. The first is the application of 'life cycle perspectives' to educational terms. The second is the activation of financial education programs that involve the family unit as educational subjects. Third, the delivery of lectures which related to the financing and nurturing of program coordinators was proposed. The fourth is drawing a connection between online and offline education in terms of effectively applying teaching methods. Ultimately, the results of this study can be used as basic data to inform the planning, development, and operational stages of financial education programs within family life education, which can be performed in healthy family support centers in the future.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the characteristics and financial status of credit delinquents utilizing the debt management program of the Credit Counseling and Recovery Service between January-June in 2007. Total sample of 41,355 cases was analyzed using the statistical program SPSS(Version 12.0). For analysis, descriptive statistics, F-test, Scheffe test, t-test, logit analysis and regression analysis were employed. People in the age range of 30-40s, males, high-school graduates, married couples, part-time employees, costfree residents and residents in other regions were relatively high users of the debt management program. Reasons of credit delinquency were diverse and was combined to credit default. However, increases in expenses and income reductions were found to be the most frequent reasons. Financial conditions of delinquents were worse than those of average persons shown on the national statistics. It was also found that age, sex, educational level, occupation, region of residence, home-ownership, reason of delinquency, income and total outstandings of debt were significant determinants of short-term debt burden which was measured by the ratio of monthly payment to income and long-term debt burden which was measured by repayment period.
The purpose of this study is to examine the influence of parent-to-child financial transfers and economic resources on financial transfers, caregiving, and time donated from middle-aged adult children to their elderly parents. Analyzing data from the Wisconsin Longitudinal Study, which provides long-term observations of financial reciprocity and recent reports about elder care, the current study finds strong positive effects of prior parent-to-child financial transfers in the models of caregiving and time; which indicates the importance of reciprocity. In terms of determinants of resource transfers, the findings of logistic regression analyses suggest that the economic resources of parents and adult children are strong determinants of child-to-parent financial resource transfers. Sociodemographic characteristics of parents and respondents were observed as strong determinants of caregiving or time. In addition, caregiving responds more to the health and income levels of parents whereas donated time is responsive to the net worth of parents and parents' status. For adult children, gender is a strong determinant of both caregiving and time donation. The long-term health problem of adult children is a statistically significant predictor of caregiving, while the employment status of adult children and the number of siblings have statistically a significant association with time donated to care for the parents.
