Hydrocyclone is widely used in industry, for its simple design, high capacity, low maintenance and low operational cost. The objective of this study is to develop hydrocyclone coagulation and filtration system. The system is made of hydrocyclone ballasted coagulation with polyaluminium chloride silicate (PACS) and upflow filter to treat micro particles in urban storm runoff. Roadside sediment particles (< $200{\mu}m$) was mixed with tap water to make various turbid suspensions to simulate urban storm runoff. The filter cartridge was filled with polyethylene media system and ran 1hr per everyday and total operation time were 8.19hrs and backwashing everyday after end of operation. The operation condition of flowrate was $8.2{\sim}11.9m^3/day$ (mean $10.1m^3/day$) and surface overflow rate (SOR) based on filter surface area was $45.5{\sim}65.9m^3/m^2/day$ (mean $55.7m^3/m^2/day$). The range of PACS dosage concentration was 14.0~31.5 mg/L. As the results of operation, the range of removal efficiency of turbidity, SS were 81.0~95.8% (mean 89.5%) 81.8~99.0% (mean 91.4%), respectively. An increase of filtration basin retention time brought on increased of removal efficiency of turbidity and SS, and increase of SOR brought on decreased of removal efficiency. During the first flush in urban area, storm runoff have an high concentration of SS (200~600 mg/L) and the filtration bed becomes clogged and decreased of removal efficiency. Backwashing begins when the drainage pipe valve at the filtration tank bottom is completely open (backwashing stage 1). Backwashing stage 2 was using air bubbles and water jet washing the media for 5 mins and open the drainage valve. After backwashing stage 1, 2, 61.83~64.04%, 18.53~27.51% of SS loading was discharged from filtration tank, respectively. Discharged SS loading from effluent was 7.12~14.79% and the range of residual SS loading in fliter was 2.26~5.00%. The backwashing effects for turbidity, SS were 89.5%, 91.4%, respectively. The hydrocyclone coagulation and filtration with backwashing system, which came out to solve the problems of the costly exchange filter media, and low efficiency of removing micro particles of filter type nonpoint treatment devices, is considered as an alternative system.

In order to obtain information on the design parameters of the horizontal laterals in floodplain filtration, laboratory-scale sand-box experiments were performed where the head distributions on the laterals and the groundwater profiles were measured according to the change in parameters including lateral diameter, hydraulic conductivity of the sand, water level at the well and raw-water supply rate. Measured data were analyzed using a numerical code in order to identify the discharge intensity distribution along the laterals. It was observed from the result that the lowering of the water level at the well had minimal adverse effect on the performance of the floodplain filtration. Results also elucidated that the low conveyance of the laterals to transmit the filtrate was compensated and supplemented by a natural augmentation in horizontal conveyance through the aquifer when the raw-water supply rate exceeded the adequate recovery rate. With this mechanism, the water quality is expected to improve further since the travel distance through the aquifer is amplified. Based on these findings it can be suggested that the diameter of the lateral used in the floodplain filtration may be smaller than those in riverbank/bed filtration. It was also found that the ratio between the head loss occurring in a lateral and the total head loss in the floodplain filtration was proportional to the exit velocities of the laterals, which may be used to design and/or evaluate the lateral in floodplain filtration.

Coarse pore filter could be an alternative of membrane for solid-liquid separation in an activated sludge reactor because of inexpensive cost of the filter material and high flux at low filtration pressure. However such filter module has much less specific filtration area compared to the membrane. Therefore a certain effort is required to increase the specific filtration area in the module design of such coarse pore filter for solid-liquid separation in an activated sludge reactor. In this study, tubular type coarse pore filter was designed at various diameter and configuration. The filtration performance was investigated to separate solid in the activated sludge reactor for domestic wastewater treatment. Tubular type coarse pore filter module could be successfully applicable to solid separation in the activated sludge reactor. The design parameters were the tube diameter of 10mm and vertical installation. Smaller diameter of the tube caused faster increase of the filtration pressure because of the hydraulic head loss in the tube channel.
It is necessary to develop a mobile water production system in order to provide stable water supply in case of disasters such as floods or earthquakes. In this study, we developed a modular mobile water production system capable of producing water for various uses such as domestic water and drinking water while improving applicability in various raw water sources. The water production system consists of three stages of filtration (sand filtration - activated carbon filtration - pressure filtration) to produce domestic water and an additional reverse osmosis process to produce drinking water. In laboratory and field experiments, the domestic water production system showed excellent treatment efficiency for particulate matter, but showed limitations in the treatment of dissolved substances such as dissolved organic matter. In addition, ultraviolet irradiation was considered as additional disinfection step, because it does not form precipitates of manganese oxides after disinfection. Reverse osmosis process was added to increase the removal efficiency of dissolved substances and the treated water satisfied drinking water quality standards. Fluorescence analysis of dissolved organic matter showed that the fulvic acid-like substances in raw water was successfully removed in the reverse osmosis process. The mobile water production system developed in this study is expected to be used not only in water supply in case of disaster, but also widely used in islands and rural area.
Urokinase is an enzyme with fibrinolytic activity (plasminogen activator) isolated from fresh urine of healthy men. Viral safety is an important prerequisite for clinical preparation of the protein from urine. In order to increase the viral safety of a high purity urokinase in regard to non-enveloped viruses, a virus removal process using a novel polyvinylidene fluoride membrane filter (Viresolve NFP) has been optimized. Urokinase was able to pass through the filter with recoveries of 95% in the production scale process. No substantial changes were observed in physical and biochemical characteristics of the filtered urokinase in comparison with those of the enzyme before filtration. A 47-mm disk membrane filter was used to simulate the process performance of the production scale cartridges and tested if it could remove several experimental model viruses for human pathogenic viruses, including porcine parvovirus (PPV), human hepatitis A virus (HAV), murine encephalomyocarditis virus (EMCV), bovine viral diarrhoea virus (BVDV), and bovine herpes virus (BHV). Non-enveloped viruses (PPV, HAV, and EMCV) as well as enveloped viruses (BVDV and BHV) were completely removed during filtration. The log reduction factors achieved were $\geq$4.86 for PPV, $\geq$4.60 for HAV, $\geq$6.87 for EMCV, $\geq$4.60 for BVDV, and $\geq$5.44 for BHV. These results indicate that the virus filtration process successfully improved the viral safety of the final products.

Viral safety is an important prerequisite for clinical preparations of plasma-derived pharmaceuticals. One potential way to increase the safety of therapeutic biological products is the use of a virus-retentive filter. In order to increase the viral safety of human antihemophilic factor IX, particularly in regard to non-enveloped viruses, a virus removal process using a polyvinylidene fluoride membrane filter (Viresolve NFP) has been optimized. The most critical factor affecting the filtration efficiency was operating pH and the optimum pH was 6 or 7. Flow rate increased with increasing operating pressure and temperature. Recovery yield in the optimized production-scale process was 96%. No substantial changes were observed in the physical and biochemical characteristics of the filtered factor IX in comparison with those before filtration. A 47-mm disk membrane filter was used to simulate the process performance of the production-scale cartridges and to test if it could remove several experimental model viruses for human pathogenic viruses, including human hepatitis A virus (HAV), porcine parvovirus (PPV), murine encephalomyocarditis virus (EMCV), human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV), bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV), and bovine herpes virus (BHV). Non-enveloped viruses (HAV, PPV, and EMCV) as well as enveloped viruses (HIV, BVDV, and BHV) were completely removed during filtration. The log reduction factors achieved were $\geq$6.12 for HAV, $\geq$4.28 for PPV, $\geq$5.33 for EMCV, $\geq$5.51 for HIV, $\geq$5.17 for BVDV, and $\geq$5.75 for BHV. These results indicate that the virus filtration process successfully improved the viral safety of factor IX.
In the operation of submerged membrane-coupled sequencing batch reactor, the effect of filling step on the removal efficiency and filtration performance were investigated. Two sets of operation modes, the filling step located in the beginning of aerobic step (Mode-1) and the beginning of anoxic step (Mode-2), during 89 days were conducted. There was no wide difference in the COD removal and filtration performance between two sets of operation modes. But in the removal efficiency of nutrients (total nitrogen and total phosphorous), Mode-2 was more effective than Mode-1. In the case of Mode-2, average removal efficiencies of COD, total nitrogen, and total phosphorous were 99.1, 73.3, and 77.3%, respectively.

Purposes of this study were to evaluate operational performance of submerged membrane bioreactor (MBR) combined with periodic chemical backwash. Five lab-scale submerged MBRs were performed in accordance with NaOH dose, backwash solution volume. While filtration resistance of MBR system without backwash (Control) was increased persistently from startup, those of four MBR systems (RUN 1-4) with chemical backwash were maintained at $(1.4{\pm}0.16){\times}10^{12}$, $(8.6{\pm}0.90){\times}10^{11}$, $(1.9{\pm}0.10){\times}10^{12}$, $(1.4{\pm}0.10){\times}10^{12}l/m$, respectively. Under chemical backwash condition of 0.0230 M, 375 mL, permeability of membrane was highest at flux of $30L/m^2/hr$. According to results from experiment that changing condition of dose and volume, it was estimated that effect of chemical dose acts more greatly than backwash solution volume. Because COD removal rates of all MBR systems with chemical backwash were more than 96%, it was proved that NaOH added to backwash solution did not affect microorganism.
A submerged flat-sheet membrane separation system integrated with PAC (powdered activated carbon) was used in this research in order to investigate the effects of PAC on the efficiencies of operation and treatment and to evaluate the performance of the system. The experiments were carried out under operating conditions of a filtration rate of 0.38 m/d, water temperature of $20-28^{\circ}C$, and PAC dose of 0 g/L (Run-A) and 20 g/L (Run-B). The influent concentrations of TOC (total organic carbon), $NH_4{^+}-N$ (ammonia nitrogen) and $UV_{254}$ (UV absorbance at 254 nm) were 2.48 mg/L, 1.4 mg/L and 2.53 1/m, respectively. TOC removal of 43.2 and 73.6%, ammonia nitrogen removal of 4.9 and 15.9%, and $UV_{254}$ removal of 20.6 and 31.6% were obtained for Run-A and Run-B, respectively. During an experimental period of 33 days, no change was found in TMP (Run-B), but the TMP in Run-A increased by 5 kPa after 29 days. This research showed that the filtrate quality and the performance efficiency were enhanced when PAC was introduced into the filtration system.

In order to find the best design of artificial stream for the riverbed filtration in multi-purpose filtration pond, a mathematical model was developed employing the energy line and the Manning's formula and was analyzed by the Euler's technique. Various design factors were investigated through scenario analyses of the artificial stream using the model. Results showed that the appropriate slope of the stream bottom was 2/10,000 and the appropriate infiltration rate at the streambed was $2.5m^3/m^2-day$ for the pond with the area of 100 ha, and that the Manning's roughness coefficient in this case was expected to be about 0.026 and the maximum water-depth was less than 1m. It was also shown that the longer the artificial stream the more advantageous it became for the riverbed filtration. Furthermore, results showed that it was not an efficient way to prevent clogging of the streambed by increasing the flow velocity of the stream and that the performance was higher near a weir with a large head drop.
