  • Objectives: The production and use of nanoparticles have been increased. In 2014 Workplace Survey Results, 335 companies produce and treat nanoparticls. However, lack of data on nano-toxicity and a method for risk management and regulation on nanoparticles and the standard test method are not sufficient. Protective equipment selection guidelines for nanoparticles are not established. It is required to carry out respirator efficiency test against nanoparticles. This study was performed to evaluate filtration efficiency and manikin-based total inward leakage of particle filtering mask using in Korean country challenged with silver nanoparticles. Methods: We investigated filtration efficiency and total inward leakage of 7 respirator with silver nanoparticle. Results: The geometric mean diameters of Silver nanoparticles were 30 nm and number concentration were about $10^6{\sharp}/cm^3$. Filtration efficiency of six of the seven particle filtering masks was more than 98% and one particle filtering masks filtration efficiency was 94.9%. The filtration efficiency of particle filtering masks to 20 nm silver nanoparticels was highest. Artificial breathing machine with manikin based total inward leakage were 7.6% ~ 42.3%. Conclusions: The results of this study nano-silver filter efficiency was high but the total inward leakage was higher than filter penetration. Therefore, education on how to wear a respirator should be demanded. Especially for workers handling nanoparticles and toxic material, user seal checking and fit test must be performed.

  • Diesel particulate filter is being recognized that it is the most effective technologies to reduce particulate matter. In this study, to determine the characteristics of the cell-open-type pDPF, we employed p-DPF to exhaust gas tunnel of diesel engine and surveyed filtration efficiency and BPT on the basis of PM which is exhausted from engine. In this paper the soot loading mass in DPF can be predicted from increase of differential pressure of DPF so that we can measure filtration efficiency and Balance Point Temperature (BPT) by soot loading mass. The result of the research showed that the filtration efficiency is 65% in ESC mode with 0.7mm hole diameter. For the results of the characteristics of filtration efficiency and BPT according to mass_exh, we found that if mass_exh increases, filtration efficiency increases and BPT decreases.

  • The filtration rate and oxygen consumption of Anadara granosa bisenensis were measured at 4 different temperature (10$^{\circ}C$, 15$^{\circ}C$, 20$^{\circ}C$, and 25$^{\circ}C$) and 4 different salinity levels (20, 25, 35, and 40 psu), using an direct method under laboratory conditions. The samples were divided into two groups: a large-sized group (shell length: 34.58 ${\pm}$ 2.23 mm, body weight: 12.43 ${\pm}$ 0.44 g) and a small-sized group (shell length: 20.60 ${\pm}$ 0.85 mm, body weight: 4.41 ${\pm}$ 2.30 g). Filtration rate and oxygen consumption increased with the increase of various temperatures and salinity levels. Also, the filtration rate and oxygen consumption of the small-sized group were higher than those of the large-sized group. These results indicate that the filtration rate and oxygen consumption of Anadara granosa bisenensis depends on environmental conditions, especially on water temperature and salinity.

  • Casting behavior of Zr(Y,Ce)O2 TZP/Mullite suspension during pressure filtration was investigated to prepare multi-layered Functionally Gradient Materials(FGM). The dispersion stabilities of each layer suspension were investigated by examination of zeta potential and viscosity. The each suspensions with 20 vol.% solid loading and 100 첸 of viscosity was prepared after fix of the dispersing agent (Sodium hexa-meta phosphate) and the binder (Hydroxyethyl cellulose), and then the cakes were formed at the 2.5 MPa~10.0MPa pressure range. The cake thickness of all suspensions was increased with the square root of time at the constant pressure, and the relations between filtration pressure(P)a nd dehydration rate (Q=dh/dt) showed that the flows of filtrates in the consolidated layers were laminar. The permeabilities were nearly constant during filtration, and kozeny constants(Kc) of the suspensions were 4.8~6.7. These valumes were seen as close to 5, which might be homogeneous particle packing during filtration. On the basis of those data, the multi layered compaction with 9 mm thickness and 52.5% green density was prepared by continuous pressure filtration.

  • Abundant growth of algae in raw water sources caused by eutrophication brings about significant side effects on water supply, such as taste and order problem, oxygen depletion, toxic material secretion, and filter clogging problem in water treatment process, etc. The purpose of this research is to remove the algae and phosphorus compounds in the Pal-dang reservoir promptly by using the upflow filtration system with coagulant addition. The filter tower consisted of sand media and sieve filter with air back-washing process. By using coagulation and filtration with $132{\mu}m$ pore size filter, about 55% and 70% of algae and phosphorus compounds were removed respectively. The experimental conditions were as follows; head loss of 0.2m, linear velocity of 200m/day, and filtration flux of 1000($L/m^2/day$). In the case of filtration with cartridge type filter of $25{\mu}m$ pore size, the filtration flux was about 7800 LMH, and the removal ratios of COD, SS, T-P, and Chlo-a. were 61%, 99%, 54%, and 98%, respectively. However, high pressure air back-washing process with should be required for the maintenance of such high filtration flux.

  • The influences of corona charging parameters on collection efficiency and surface potential of air filters were investigated. A polypropylene filter medium was electrically charged using a corona charger, and the resulting surface potential and filtration efficiency against neutralized KCl particles were measured. The filter media was charged under different conditions of applied voltage, voltage polarity, charging time, and distance between electrodes. In addition, we considered charging both sides of the filter as well as charging one side of the filter. As a result, electrical force obtained by charged fiber affected filtration efficiency when the apply voltage strength was higher than 7 kV. Negatively charged filter had higher filtration efficiency than positively charged filter while the surface potential of the negatively charged filter was slightly lower than those of positively charged filter. Moreover, the filtration efficiency increased as the charging time of filter fiber increased and the distance between electrodes decreased. The filtration efficiency was more sensitive to changes of charging time than to those of electrode distance, and the efficiency of both sides charged filter was higher than that of single side charged filter.

  • Objectives: The coronavirus pandemic that began in 2019(COVID-19) has been one of the worst pandemics of the 21st century. Masks have been used to prevent COVID-19, but there are currently no standards for the long-term use of masks in the Republic of Korea. This study was conducted to assess the microbiological safety of KF94(Korea Filter 94) disposable face masks according to wearing duration by evaluating the bacterial filtration efficiencies of masks worn by research participants. Methods: A commercially available KF94 mask certified by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety(MFDS) in the Republic of Korea was selected as the test mask. The research participants(n = 15) wore masks for the durations of one, three, and seven days. Participants also reported several parameters, including wearing time, makeup frequency, and storage. Bacterial filtration efficiencies of the worn masks were measured by a mask bioaerosol filtration tester. Staphylococcus aureus(S. aureus) was used as the test bacteria and quantitatively measured through the cultivation method. Then, bacterial filtration efficiency was calculated using the formula suggested by the MFDS. Results: All worn masks showed over 99.98% of mean bacterial filtration efficiency for S. aureus. There were no significant differences among bacterial filtration efficiencies of face masks according to wearing duration. There was also no significant difference among bacterial filtration efficiencies among participants. There was no correlation between the results of bacterial filtration efficiencies and reported parameters from participants. Conclusions: In the absence of significant external damage to the mask, the bacterial filtration efficiency of the mask can be maintained even after seven days of wearing. This result suggests that KF94 masks certified by the MFDS can be used repeatedly for about a week without loss of bacterial filtration efficiency.

  • Silica-based gel filtration chromatography has been used to characterize molecular weight of proteins. However, the molecular weight measured by this method was distorted by protein-silica interactions like hydrophobic and electrostatic forces. Therefore, we characterized protein-silica interaction using two forms of phytochrome (124 kDa) having different hydrophobicity and surface charge. PH and ionic strength affected the retention time of phytochrome suggesting that electrostatic force is the major interaction between protein and silica surface.

  • In this study, pressure drop was measured in the pulse jet bag filter without venturi on which 16 numbers of filter bags (Ø$140{\times}850{\ell}$) are installed according to operation condition(filtration velocity, inlet dust concentration, pulse pressure, and pulse interval) using coke dust from steel mill. The obtained 180 pressure drop test data were used to predict pressure drop with multiple regression model so that pressure drop data can be used for effective operation condition and as basic data for economical design. The prediction results showed that when filtration velocity was increased by 1%, pressure drop was increased by 2.2% which indicated that filtration velocity among operation condition was attributed on the pressure drop the most. Pressure was dropped by 1.53% when pulse pressure was increased by 1% which also confirmed that pulse pressure was the major factor affecting on the pressure drop next to filtration velocity. Meanwhile, pressure drops were found increased by 0.3% and 0.37%, respectively when inlet dust concentration and pulse interval were increased by 1% implying that the effects of inlet dust concentration and pulse interval were less as compared with those changes of filtration velocity and pulse pressure. Therefore, the larger effect on the pressure drop the pulse jet bag filter was found in the order of filtration velocity($V_f$), pulse pressure($P_p$), inlet dust concentration($C_i$), pulse interval($P_i$). Also, the prediction result of filtration velocity, inlet dust concentration, pulse pressure, and pulse interval which showed the largest effect on the pressure drop indicated that stable operation can be executed with filtration velocity less than 1.5 m/min and inlet dust concentration less than $4g/m^3$. However, it was regarded that pulse pressure and pulse interval need to be adjusted when inlet dust concentration is higher than $4g/m^3$. When filtration velocity and pulse pressure were examined, operation was possible regardless of changes in pulse pressure if filtration velocity was at 1.5 m/min. If filtration velocity was increased to 2 m/min. operation would be possible only when pulse pressure was set at higher than $5.8kgf/cm^2$. Also, the prediction result of pressure drop with filtration velocity and pulse interval showed that operation with pulse interval less than 50 sec. should be carried out under filtration velocity at 1.5 m/min. While, pulse interval should be set at lower than 11 sec. if filtration velocity was set at 2 m/min. Under the conditions of filtration velocity lower than 1 m/min and high pulse pressure higher than $7kgf/cm^2$, though pressure drop would be less, in this case, economic feasibility would be low due to increased in installation and operation cost since scale of dust collection equipment becomes larger and life of filtration bag becomes shortened due to high pulse pressure.

  • A flexile fiber filter developed in Korea was operated to evaluate the effect of packing density and filtration velocity on particle removal. The pilot-scale fiber filter with 40 cm of diameter and 2 m of height was packed with polyamide fibers of which mean diameter was approximately 0.93 mm. While the filtration velocity was maintained at 325 m/hr, the particle removal efficiency was compared with various of packing density from $70kg/m^3\;to\;100kg/m^3$. On the contrary, when the packing density was maintained at $70kg/m^3$, the particle removal efficiency was examined with various filtration velocity from 65 m/hr to 400 m/hr. The filtration pressure increased with the packing-density increase. Below $80kg/m^3$ of packing density, the removal efficiencies of turbidity ad SS were less than 30% and 50%, respectively. At $100kg/m^3$ of packing density, the removal efficiencies of them were nearly 45% and 60% respectively. The filtration pressure increased with the filtration-velocity increase. A better removal efficiency was obtained at a lower filtration velocity, removal efficiency of them were 73% at 65 m/hr. Consequently, The filtration velocity was the more important factor to enhance the particle removal efficiency compared with the packing density in fiber filter.
