  • Several cooling techinques have been studied for protecting gas turbine blades from hot gas. In terms of film-cooling techniques, various shapes of film cooling holes have been studied including fan shaped holes, which are used on gas turbine blades. However, owing to increasing demands on smaller gas turbines, a research on film-cooling holes on thin walls is required. This study was conducted at blowing ratios of 1 and 2, using numerical analysis. Through the numerical analysis, the effect of geometrical parameters on the effectiveness of fan-shaped hole film cooling was studied. Moreover, optimization was performed on three geometrical parameters: metering length, lateral expansion angle and forward expansion angle. As a result, we realized that the optimal fan-shaped holes on each blowing ratio were found to have very similar geometry and cooling performance.

  • In this paper, cooling characteristics of seeker windows were examined using the Sinda-Fluint software. Various cooling methods were considered to satisfy the limit temperature of the cooled seeker window which would be exposed to excessive aerodynamic heating conditions by varying coolant type and mass flow rate of coolant. Due to the enhanced heat transfer between the coolant and the seeker window, internally cooled seeker window which uses liquid coolant showed lowered temperature distribution in the window compared to internally cooled seeker window which uses gas coolant. External film cooled seeker window also showed good cooling characteristics because it reduces the convective heat flux to the seeker window fundamentally. It was also confirmed that the temperature and the temperature gradient of seeker windows were significantly reduced for the cases which use external film cooling additionally to the gas and liquid cooled seeker window.

  • After hot rolling, a high-temperature steel plate with a temperature higher than $800^{\circ}C$ is rapidly cooled by multiple circular water jets. In this cooling process, because the temperature of the steel plate is much higher than the boiling point of the cooling water, film-boiling heat transfer occurs and a very thin steam layer forms between the plate surface and the cooling water. The steam layer acts as a thermal resistance that prevents heat transfer between the cooling water and the steel plate. In addition to the film-boiling heat transfer, complex physical phenomena such as the free-surface flow of residual water that accumulated on the material and the material's high-speed motion also occur in the cooling process. In this study, the simultaneous cooling process of the upper and lower sides of a running hot steel strip is investigated using a three-dimensional numerical model and the cooling performances and characteristics of the upper-side cooling and lower-side cooling are compared.

  • Oil-film flow visualizations and three-dimensional flow measurements using a five-hole probe have been conducted to investigate three-dimensional flow characteristics and total pressure losses of a row of film-cooling jets injected in spanwise direction. For several span-to-diameter ratios, experiments are performed in the case of three velocity ratios of 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5. The flow measurements show that downstream flow due to the injection is characterized by a single streamwise vortex instead of a pair of counter-rotating vortices, which appear in the case of streamwise injection, and the vortex strength strongly depends on the velocity ratio. Regardless of the velocity*y ratio, presence of the spanwise film-cooling jets always produces total pressure loss, which is pronounced when the velocity ratio is large. It has also been found that the production of the total pressure loss is closely related to the secondary vortical flow. In addition, effects of the span-to-diameter ratio on the flow and total pressure loss are discussed in detail.

  • Periodic pulsations in the static pressure near turbine surfaces as blade rows move relative to each other is one of the important sources of turbine unsteadiness. The present experiment aims to investigate the effect of the static pressure pulsations on the interaction of film coolant flows from two rows of staggered holes with mainstream and its effect on film cooling heat transfer. Potential flow pulsations are generated by the rotating shutter mechanism installed downstream of the test section, The free-stream Strouhal number based on the boundary layer thickness is in the range of 0.033 - 0.33, and the amplitude of about 10-20%. Measured are time-averaged and phase-averaged velocity variations, pressure variations and temperature distributions of the flow field. Experimental conditions are identified by boundary layer measurements. Injectant behavior is characterized by the measurements of unsteady pressure in the plenum chamber and free-stream static pressure. The film cooling effectiveness is evaluated from the insulated wall temperature measurement. It has been found that bulk flow pulsation provides very large diffusion of the injectants and the effectiveness is significantly reduced by the flow pulsations.

  • A study has been conducted to observe the slot film cooling effect on a convergent nozzle wall. The slot film cooling is used to protect the nozzle wall from the hot combusted gas by the coolant injected from the slot around the inner wall of the nozzle. The film cooling effectiveness and the heat transfer to the nozzle wall are influenced significantly by the blowing ratio of the coolant to the main flow and those are also influenced by the shape of the slot and the flow acceleration in the nozzle. In the present study, the heat transfer for the various blowing ratios has been performed by the experimental method and the results are compared with the results computed by the empirical formula. The numerical method has been conducted to compare the film cooling effectiveness of the convergent nozzle with that of the cylinder. For the relatively low blowing ratio, the cooling effectiveness increases sharply as the blowing ratio increases, and the increasing rate slows down for the high blowing ratio.

  • The purpose of this study is to design of film-cooling ring for the small thrust rocket engine using green propellants(Hydrogen peroxide and kerosene). Cold flow test was carried out to measure the mass flow rate and atomizing characteristic. Required mass flow rate was obtained from thermal analysis of the engine, and measured flow rate 42.25g/s was in the range of permissible coolant flow rate. With the same mass flow rate, cooling ring with more hole and high velocity shows better spray pattern. The result of thermal analysis, cooling ring has enough cooling performance.

  • From a rapid cooling to a slow cooling in the actual cooling process in shipyards, the phase of steel becomes martensite, bainite, ferrite, and pearlite. In order to simulate the cooling process, heat transfer analysis was performed considering the effects of impinging water jet, film boiling, and radiation. From above simulation it is possible to find the cooling speed at the inherent strain region and volume percentage of all phases in that region. By the suggested method based on the precise material properties calculated from volume percentage of all phases, it will be possible to predict the plate deformations by line heating more precisely. It is verified by comparing with some experimental results that the present method is very effective and efficient.

  • Cooling characteristics are investigated numerically in the chamber for high-performance burnout of wastes with solid phase. Before the combustion chamber is manufactured, combustion analysis is performed for evaluation of burning rate and cooling performance. A water cooling method is applied and its feasibility for cooling is examined depending on coolant flow rate. Another method of complex cooling is adopted by combining air film cooling with water cooling, leading to improved cooling performance.
