Magnesium alloys have gained increased attention in recent years as the structural materials, because of their attractive properties such as good specific strength, excellent sound damping capability. However, to expand their applications, a reliable joining process is absolutely necessary. In this study, a CW fiber laser was used to investigate the lap weldability of sand casting and wrought magnesium alloys. The effect of defocused distance on lap weldability was examined, and it was found that spatters always generated at the around focused distance because of the high power density of the laser beam. Thus, defocused distance was required to obtain sound welds. In addition, the application of fillet welding was evaluated for minimizing the affect of sand casting magnesium alloy that have relatively poor weldability. As a result of this study, we could confirm good weldability without weld defects.
Fillet welding is widely used in the assembly of ships and offshore structures. The T-joint configuration is frequently reported to experience fatigue damage when a marine structure meets extreme loads such as storm loads. Fatigue damage is affected by the magnitude of residual stresses on the weld. Recently, many shipping registers and design guides have required that the fatigue strength assessment procedure of seagoing structures under wave-induced random loading and storm loading be compensated based on the effect of residual stresses. We propose a computational procedure to analyze the residual stresses in a T-joint. Residual stresses are measured by the X-ray diffraction (XRD) method, and a 3-D finite element analysis (FEA) is performed to obtain the residual stress profile in the T-joint. The proposed finite element model is validated by comparing experiments with computational results, and the characteristics of the residual stresses in the T-joint are discussed.

Stainless steel sheets are widely used as structural materials for the manufacture of railroad cars and commercial vehicles. These kinds structures used stainless steel sheets are commonly fabricated by using the gas welding. For the fatigue design of gas welded joints such as fillet joints and plug joints, it is necessary to obtain information on the stress distribution at the weldment and the fatigue strength of the gas welded joints. Moreover the influence of the geometrical parameters corresponding to the gas welded joints on the stress distribution and fatigue strength must be evaluated. ${\Delta}P-N_f$ curves were obtained from the data recorded in fatigue tests. Using these results, the ${\Delta}P-N_f$ curves were rearranged according the relation between $\Delta\sigma-N_f$ and the maximum stress at the edge of the fillet welded joint.

This paper presents the result of an investigation on the application of the acoustic emission method to the monitoring of fatigue crack initiation, growth and track location in welded joints. Fatigue test was carried out for a typical fillet welded joint of ship structure. AE parameter such as ring down count was analyzed in time domain and crack locations were examined by source location and cluster option which is one of the functions of AE signal processor The usability of AE mettled was confirmed for the detection of the initiation and location of through crack.
The fatigue life of welded joints is associated with crack initiation and propagation life. Theses cannot be easily separated, since the definition of crack initiation is vague due to the initiation of multiple cracks that are distributed randomly along the weld toes. In this paper a method involving a notch strain and fracture mechanical approach, which considers the characteristics of welded joints, e.g. welding residual stress and statistical characteristics of multiple cracks, is proposed, in an attempt to reasonably estimate these fatigue lives. The fatigue crack initiation life was evaluated statistically, e.g. the probability of failure occurrence in 2.3, 50 and $97.7\%$, in which the cyclic response of the local stress/strain hi the vicinity of the weld toes and notch factors derived by the irregular shape of the weld bead are taken into account. The fatigue crack propagation life was simulated by using Monte-Carlo method in consideration of the Ad-factor and the mechanical behavior of mutual interaction/coalescence between two adjacent cracks. The estimated total fatigue life, $(N_T)_{P50\%}$, as a sum of crack initiation and propagation life under the probability of failure occurrence in $50\%$ showed a good agreement with the experimental results. The developed technique for fatigue lift estimation enables to provide a quantitative proportion of crack initiation and propagation life in the total fatigue life due to the nominal stress range, ${\Delta}S$.

Welding is a well-developed, widely used process for permanently joining metal components. However, the mechanical reliability of welded parts still offers room for improvement. A weld region consists of a fusion zone, a partially melted zone, and a heat-affected zone, and each zone has different material properties. In addition, the geometrical shape of a weld bead or fillet influences the mechanical reliability. A precise structural analysis must consider how a local welded region influences the mechanical behavior of the entire structure. This study focuses on an effective modeling scheme for the weld region. It relies on experimental and numerical methods to determine the proper correlation based on experimental results and to propose a modeling scheme for welded parts.
One of the most interesting and promising steel groups considered for the rocket motor case, aircraft and aerospace component is the maraging(martensitic plus aging) nickel steel, developed by International Nickel Company in 1960. This material attains a very high strength with good fracture toughness by simple heat treatments which do not involve a quenching. Full strength can be obtained by "maraging" at 480.deg. for 3 hours for the 18% Ni maraging steel. The effect of heat treatments was considered on the residual stress field of 18% Ni maraging steel weldments. In experiments, various heat treatments such as stress relieve heat treatment, aging and solution heat treatment were carried out of the GTA weldments and the residual stresses were measured by using the hole drilling method. Whereas the conventional pattern of residual stress shows the stresses to be maximum along the weld centerline with tensile stress extending into the heat affected zone, the pattern in maraging steels shows the centerline stress to be compressive. After welding, a series of aging, solution heat treatment and solution heat treatment plus aging treatment were carried out and the residual stresses were measured to reveal that these heat treatments almost completely remove the welding residual stresses.

The instability of the arc in the $CO_2$ arc welding affects the quality of the weld in the automotive industry. This paper evaluates the effects of the arc stability in $CO_2$ arc welding with respect to vertical welding positions. In this experiment, galva-annealed steel sheets(CA) were used as specimens, and these materials were welded by adopting new Cold Metal Transfer (CMT) process. For each sample, fillet joint welding trials were carried out using the same conditions. Each part of welding joints was welded with vertical-up, vertical-down position at $45^{\circ},\;90^{\circ}\;and\;135^{\circ}$ degrees. A high speed camera and a welding signal monitoring system were used for monitoring fluid-flow phenomena in weld pools and frequency measurements, respectively. Through this study, the welding position were found to be key factors mainly to influence the arc stability in $CO_2$ welding moreover and that the arc stability in the vertical-up welding position was observed to be more stable than the vertical-down welding position below $90^{\circ}$.
The Zn coating on automotive galvanized steel sheets can improve corrosion resistance. However, the boiling temperature of Zn is lower than the melting temperature of steel and it causes well-known spatter and porosity problem. One of most prominent solutions is a pretreatment of Zn coating by an additional welding arc prior to the main welding process. In this research, GTA and GMA are selected as heat sources for pretreatment and main welding processes, respectively. The authors suggested three possible mechanisms to reduce weld defects by the GTA pretreatment: (1) Formation of gap between the sheets; (2) Evaporation of Zn layer; (3) Oxidation of Zn layer. Among them, Zn Oxidation is the most important mechanism to reduce weld defects in the GTA-GMA hybrid process.
Because the quantitative relationships between welding parameters and welding result are not yet blown, optimal values of welding parameters for $CO_2$ robotic arc welding is a difficult task. Using the various artificial data processing methods may solve this difficulty. This research aims to develop an expert system for $CO_2$ robotic arc welding to recommend the optimal values of welding parameters. This system has three main functions. First is the recommendation of reasonable values of welding parameters. For such work, the relationships in between the welding parameters are investigated by the use of regression analysis and fuzzy system. The second is the estimation of bead shape by a neural network system. In this study the welding current voltage, speed, weaving width, and root gap are considered as the main parameters influencing a bead shape. The neural network system uses the 3-layer back-propagation model and a generalized delta rule as teaming algorithm. The last is the optimization of the parameters for the correction of undesirable weld bead. The causalities of undesirable weld bead are represented in the form of rules. The inference engine derives conclusions from these rules. The conclusions give the corrected values of the welding parameters. This expert system was developed as a PC-based system of which can be used for the automatic or semi-automatic $CO_2$ fillet welding with 1.2, 1.4, and 1.6mm diameter the solid wires or flux-cored wires.
