  • Double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs) with high purity were produced by the catalytic decomposition of tetrahydrofuran (THF) using a Fe-Mo/MgO catalyst at $800^{\circ}C$. The as-synthesized DWCNTs typically have catalytic impurities and amorphous carbon, which were removed by a two-step purification process consisting of acid treatment and oxidation. In the acid treatment, metallic catalysts were removed in HCl at room temperature for 5 hr with magnetic stirring. Subsequently, the oxidation, using air at $380^{\circ}C$ for 5 hr in the a vertical-type furnace, was used to remove the amorphous carbon particles. The DWCNT suspension was prepared by dispersing the purified DWCNTs in the aqueous sodium dodecyl sulfate solution with horn-type sonication. This was then air-sprayed on ITO glass to fabricate DWCNT field emitters. The field emission properties of DWCNT films related to transmittance were studied. This study provides the possibility of the application of large-area transparent CNT field emission cathodes.

  • We fabricated FEDs based on ZnO nanowires. ZnO nanowires were synthesized on Au thin films by hydrothermal method on hot plate. After 2 hours, we obtained nanowires of chin form. The high-purity nanowires showed sharp tips geometry with a wurtzite structure. The field emission properties of the ZnO nanowires were investigated in high vacuum chamber. The turn-on field for the ZnO nanowires was found to be about 4.1 V/${\mu}m$ at a current density of $0.1{\mu}A/cm^2$.

  • Field emission behaviors from diamond-like carbon films were investigated. The films were deposited on n-type Si wafer by ion beam sputtering method using 3 cm Kaufman type ion source. Regardless of the film thicknesses and atomic bond structure, the emission current was much enhanced by electrical breakdown between anode and the film surface. The effective work function was estimated to be about 0.1 eV. In order to identify the emission site, tungsten tip was scanned the damaged region damaged region but localized to a specific site. Analysis using Auger electron spectroscopy and SEM shows that SiC compound was not a sufficient condition for the electron emission. This result showed that the enhanced emission was mainly due to the changes in the chemical bond of the damaged region rather than the enhanced electric field caused by the morphological change.

  • Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are grown on the TiN-coated silicon substrate by varying the thickness of Ni and Invar426 catalyst layers at 600$^{\circ}C$ using an inductively coupled plasma-chemical vapor deposition (ICP-CVD). The Ni and Invar426 catalysts are formed using an RF magnetron sputtering system with various deposition periods. Characterization using various techniques, such as FESEM, HRTEM, and Raman spectroscopy, shows that the physical dimension as well as the crystal quality of grown CNTs are strongly changed by the kind and thickness of catalyst materials. It is also seen that Ni catalysts would be more desirable for vertical-alignment of CNTs compared with Invar426 catalysts. However, the CNTs using Invar426 catalysts display much better electron emission capabilities than those using Ni catalysts. The physical reason for all the measured data obtained are discussed to establish the relationship between structural properties and field-emissive properties of CNTs.

  • Shielding effects in conductive and magnetic materials were investigated as a function of properties, thickness and diameter. In this work, evaluations on passive conductive and magnetic shield specimens were achieved through experimentation set-up using 50 Hz single and three phase induction field sources. Analysis on material microstructure properties and characteristics of shielding specimens were performed with the use of vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). An induction field at $136{\mu}T$ of single phase system and $50{\mu}T$ of three phase systems were observed to the shield specimens with the thickness ranged of 0.2 mm to 0.4 mm. It is observed that shield specimen efficiency becomes inversely proportionate to the increment of induction fields. The decrease was attributed to the surface structure texture which relates to the crystallization and non-crystallization geometrical effects.

  • We present mid-IR (MIR) and near-UV (NUV) properties of red sequence galaxies defined by optical color-magnitude relation. We use the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) preliminary released data matched with the SDSS DR7/GALEX GR6. The red sequence galaxies with little emission lines show a wide spread of MIR (3.4um-12um) colors, implying a variety of MIR excess emission. We focus on the properties of the red sequence galaxies with MIR excess, comparing the properties of post-starburst galaxies to trace how galaxies migrate to the red sequence.

  • Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have recently attracted great attention because of their excellent physical properties, such as high mechanical strength, thermal stability, and electronic properties. These useful properties of carbon nanotubes make themselves good candidates for various application field, such as a transistor, battery, field emission display, nanoscale inter-connects, and so on. Gas-phase techniques offer the unique ability to synthesize well-oriented arrays of CNTs. However, it is seldom reported that the pressure influences on the growth of CNTs under low substrate temperature. In this work, the effect of the working pressure and the influence of the catalyst preparation on the properties of CNTs grown by microwave plasma chemical vapor deposition (MPCVD) were investigated.

  • This study investigates the effect of $NH_3$ gas upon the growth of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) using thermal chemical vapor deposition. It is considered that the CNT synthesis occurs mainly through two steps, clustering of catalyst particles and subsequent growth of CNTs. We thus introduced $NH_3$ during either an annealing or growth step. When $NH_3$ was fed only during annealing, CNTs grew longer and more highly crystalline with diameters unchanged. An addition of $NH_3$ during growth, however, resulted in shorter CNTs with lower crystallinity while increased their diameters. Vertically aligned, highly populated CNT samples showed poor field emission characteristics, leading us to apply post-treatments onto the CNT surface. The CNTs were treated by adhesive tapes or etched back by dc plasma of $N_2$ to reduce the population density and the radius of curvatures of CNTs. We discuss the morphological changes of CNTs and their field emission properties upon surface treatments.

  • We have synthesized thin multi-walled carbon nanotubes (t-MWCNTs) using a catalytic chemical vapor deposition (CCVD) method with FeMoMgO catalyst. The number of tube walls were 2 ${\sim}$ 6 with the corresponding diameters of 3 ${\sim}$ 6 nm. We obtained high production yield of over 3000 wt% compared to the weight of the supplied catalyst. These t-MWCNTs revealed the intermediate structural characteristics between single- and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs and MWCNTs). We have also characterized the field emission properties such as turn-on field and emission current, and current degradation from these t-MWCNTs together with SWCNTs and MWCNTs.

  • Carbon nanotube cathodes (CNT cathodes) were fabricated by a screen printing method using multi-walled carbon nanotubes. The effects of surface treatment on CNT cathodes were investigated for use in high efficiency field emission displays. The optimum surface treatment for a CNT cathode is dependent on a relative bonding force of CNT films on the cathode after a heat treatment. Because of the high bonding force used in the Liquid method, this method is recommended for CNT cathodes which are heat-treated at $390^{\circ}C$ in a $N_2$ atmosphere. The Rolling method is applicable for CNT cathodes fabricated at $350^{\circ}C$ in an atmosphere of air. The results of this study provide basic criteria for the selection of an appropriate surface treatment for large area CNT cathodes.
