  • We developed a simple model to predict emergence time and emergence rate of southern type garlic using the daily mean temperature. Emergence rate of garlic was decreased and emergence time was delayed on higher temperature than optimum temperature of $12.7^{\circ}C$. In the model, firstly daily emergence rate was calculated using a beta function to input daily mean temperature, then the percentage of garlic emergence was calculated using a nonlinear model with accumulated emergence rate. The model was good to describe the experimental data of growth cabinet. Also it can explain well the experimental data using temperature gradient tunnel, designed for verification of model performance. But there are 5 days of deviation between estimated and measured time of garlic emergence on the field experiment. More research is needed to develop an advanced model considering other factors, such as soil moisture.

  • The effects of standing water and cultivation frequency on emergence of Echinochloa glabrescens Munro ex. Hook were determined at varied seeding methods under simulated field conditions for 4 months. In soil-incorporated seeding method total emergence for 4 months was highest in saturated condition followed by 4, 2, and 8cm standing water, whereas total emergence of seeds sown at the soil surface was highest at 2cm standing water followed by 4cm, saturated soil, and 8cm standing water. Within 2 weeks the emergence was highest at 4cm and lowest at 2cm standing water with the soil-incorporated seeding, but the seeds sown at the soil surface with 2cm standing water resulted in the highest emergence. Ratio of emergence within 2 weeks over total emergence during 4 months was lowest at 2cm standing water in the soil incorporation, indication that 2cm standing water would be the critical water level for E. glabrescens. Since most of the seedling was emerged within 2 weeks just before cultivation, the emergence pattern was little affected by cultivation at each standing water level.

  • Unstable soil moisture conditions often negatively affect the emergence, seedling establishment, and growth uniformity at the initial stage, and then reduce the grain yield and biomass in direct seeding cultivation for rice in rainfed fields. Therefore it is important to develop a technique to increase the rapid and stabilized seedling establishment and improve the uniformity of initial growth after sowing. This study aims to confirm results on seed priming effect of indoor using petri dish experiments can be reproduced in the field using container at Ghana. Twenty-seven rice varieties including of Oryza sativa L. and O. glaberrima Steud. were used in this study. The experiments using petri dish and container with different soil moisture conditions (5%, 10%, 15%, 20%) were compared. As a result, a significant positive correlation was found between the germination time uniformity in the primed seed of petri dish and emergence time uniformity in the primed seed of container in 10% and 15% soil moisture condition. A significant positive correlation was found between the germination time uniformity in the primed seed of petri dish and plant height in the primed seed of container in 10% soil moisture condition in O. glaberrima. This study concluded that the priming effect in petri dish demonstrate those in container in the field condition of Ghana in 10% and 15% soil moisture condition during seedling stage.

  • The objective of this paper was to examine the response of rice seedling emergence and early growth under the different temperature (day/night, 29/21$^{\circ}C$, 17/17$^{\circ}C$, 12/12$^{\circ}C$) and the different seeding depth (1 cm, 2 cm, 3 cm). The trial was carried out in the phytotron and field in the Crop Experiment Station, Suwon, Korea in 1985. Calcium peroxide-coated seeds were very effctive in promoting seedling emergence, seedling establishment and eary growth of rice. Coated seeds were more effective in low temperature condition (17/17$^{\circ}C$, 12/12$^{\circ}C$) than in high temperature (29/21$^{\circ}C$) at the phytotron trial. The deeper the seeding depth, the less the emergence and seedling establishment, and the available seeding depth was I cm in the direct seeding under the flooded soil. In the field trial (seeding date, May 1) the results for the emergence and seedling establishment were similar to those in the phytotron trial. Available cultivars for the direct seeding cultivation under the flooded soil were Cheonmabyeo, Namyangbyeo, Kihobyeo, Akibare, Nakdongbyeo and Dongjinbyeo in Japonica type, and Taebaegbyeo, Samgangbyeo and Gayabyeo in Indica x Jponica type. Coefficients of variation to the emergence and seedling establishment between rice cultivars were very high. Therefore, in the direct seeding cultivation under the submerged paddy, choice of rice cultivars and improved technique for direct seeding will be more necessary.

  • This paper reports a characteristic motion of a polarity inversion line (PIL) formed at the solar surface, which is newly found by performing a three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic simulation of flux emergence in the Sun. A magnetic flux tube composed of twisted field lines is assumed to emerge below the surface, forming a bipolar region with a PIL at the surface. A key finding is the successive half-turn rotation of the PIL, leading to the formation of a quadrupolar-like region at the surface and a magnetic configuration in the corona; this configuration is reminiscent of, but essentially different from the so-called inverse-polarity configuration of a filament magnetic field. We discuss a physical mechanism for producing the half-turn rotation of a PIL, which gives new insights into the magnetic structure formed via flux emergence. This presents a reasonable explanation of the configuration of a filament magnetic field suggested by observations.

  • Three malting barley cultivars, Sacheon #6, Doosan #12, and Doosan #22 were collected from Gwangsan, Chinju and Milyang which were artificially aged to provide varying levels of seed quality. Samples were evaluated by the standard germination test (SGT), cold germination test (CT), electroconductivity test and tetrazolium vigor test (TZ). In a multiple regression analysis, percent germination in the SGT accounted for 65% of the variation in field emergence of malting barley. Vigor index of the standard germination and cold germination tests also contributed significantly to the regression equation. Grain yield was predicted by the vigor index of TZ test. Percent standard germination and percent TZ germination prediction were useful for predicting grain yield in nine lots of malting barley.

  • Light bridges (LBs) are relatively bright structures that divide sunspot umbrae into two or more parts. Chromospheric LBs are known to be associated with various activities including fan-shaped jet-like ejections and brightenings. Although magnetic reconnection is frequently suggested to be responsible for such activities, not many studies presented firm evidence to support the scenario. We carry out magnetic field measurements and imaging spectroscopy of a LB where fan-shaped jet-like ejections occur with co-spatial brightenings at their footpoints. We study their fine photospheric structures and magnetic field changes using TiO images, Near-InfraRed Imaging Spectropolarimeter data, and Hα data taken by the 1.6 m Goode Solar Telescope. As a result, we detect magnetic flux emergence in the LB that is of opposite polarity to that of the sunspot. The new flux cancels with the pre-existing flux at a rate of 5.6×1018 Mx hr-1. Both recurrent jet-like ejections and their footpoint brightenings are initiated at the vicinity of the magnetic cancellation, and show apparent horizontal extension along the LB at a projected speed of 4.3 km s-1 to form the fan-shaped appearance. Based on these observations, we suggest that the fan-shaped ejections may have resulted due to slipping reconnection between the new flux emerging in the LB and the ambient sunspot field.

  • This study was carried to know factors affecting emergence of major upland weeds in soil in order to get basic information on weed control methods. Firthy eight percent of weed seeds were distributed within soil surface to 10cm in soil and 2% of weed seeds were observed in 40~50cm soil layer in field. As planting depth was deeper, emergence of weeds became poor. However Capsella bursa-pastoris can emerge at soil surface. Amaranthus retroflexus, Amaranthus lividus, Porturaca oleracea, Chenopodium album, Solanum nigrum upto 3cm, Eleusine indica, Echinochloa crus-galli, Setaria viridis, Digitaria sanguinalis upto 7cm. Emergence of weeds was very poor in very acid soil but good in soil pH 5.5~6.0. However emergence of weed was not affected by pH 3.5~4.0 or above. Emergence of E. indica, C. bursa-pastoris, A. retroflexus, A. lividus, C. album, E. crus-galli, Solanum nigrum, and S. viridis was good in loam soil and P. oleranea, D. sanguinalis in sandy loam soil. Emergence of weed seeds was not affected by fertilization.

  • Seedling emergence of 15 rice varieties (Gayabyeo, Chilseongbyeo, Samgangbyeo, Yeongsanbyeo, Yeongdeugbyeo, Hwajinbyeo, Palgongbyeo, Seomjinbyeo, Tamjinbyeo, Milyang 95, M 101, M 202, Newbonnet, Tebonnet, and Lemont) were tested at different soil moisture regimes and seeding depths. Submergence for four days immediately after seeding did not reduce emergence rate in all varieties. Under the flooded condition, the percentage of emergence of all varieties at 1.5cm seeding depth ranged 0~40%, it is much lower compared to uncovered control, and percentage of seedling survival ranged 0~24% due to death of some emerged seedlings. Under the field condition, one time flooding up to 10cm above the soil surface after seeding did not reduce the percent emergence of seedlings. The pF value of soil was 0 for few days after flooding or raining and Eh of soil ranged 443-453m V.
