  • We have carried out the experiment to investigate optimal drainage time of barley seeding synchronized with rice harvesting in paddy field. Number of emerged barley seedling on moist paddy field was less than that of common paddy field. It is very hard to plow using combine owing to long time to work on wet condition compared to drying condition of paddy field. According to the drainage time, growth and yield of barley were not significantly different. However, late drainage time decreased the spikes per $m^2$. Rice yield and 1,000 husked rice grain weight were not significant depending on drainage times at 15 days, 20 days and 25 days before barley seeding. The range of 1,000 husked rice grain weight was 21.7~22.2 g on different drainage conditions. In results, on considering of soil hardness and time of labor, the optimal contents of soil moisture was about 33%. This study reveals that drainage time at 20 days before barley seeding is proper to increase seedlings and yield.

  • Crop monitoring can provide useful information for farmers to establish farm management strategies suitable for optimum production of vegetables. But, traditional monitoring has used field measurements involving destructive sampling and laboratory analysis, which is costly and time consuming. Unmanned Aerial vehicle (UAV) could be effectively applied in a field of crop monitoring for estimation of cultivated area, growth parameters, growth disorder and yield, because it can acquire high-resolution images quickly and repeatedly. And lower flight altitude compared with satellite, UAV can obtain high quality images even in cloudy weather. This study examined the possibility of utilizing UAV in the field of crop monitoring and was to suggest the application method for production of crop status information from UAV.

  • Improvement of $N_2$ fixation by symbiotic rhizobia is considered an effective means for enhancing its productivity without high input of nitrogen(N) fertilizer. Several methods to improve $N_2$ fixation have been proposed including the use of supernodulating mutants. The objective of this research was to identify the varietal difference in N and $N_2$-fixation ability among the soybean supernodulating mutants, SS2-2 and Sakukei 4, with different nodulation abilities using $^{15}N$ in field conditions in both Korea and Japan. The dry weight(DW) was higher in wild-type soybeans. The distribution rate of DW in each plant part was high in seeds of supernoduating and wild-type soybeans but high in stems and leaves of non-nodulating mutants. Although the supernodulating mutants had a low DW rate at maturity, they showed a similar $N_2$ fixation ability compared with wild-type. Supernodulating mutant plants mainly obtained N from $N_2$ fixation, while soil N was the main resource for obtaining N in non-nodulating mutants. The percentage of N derived from atmospheric dinitrogen(Ndfa) was higher in supernodulating mutants than in wild-type and relatively high in seeds between plant parts at maturity. In particular, supernodulating mutants showed higher N content in roots than those of wild-type and non-nodulating mutants. It was considered that supernodulating mutants have the advantage of saving nitrate in soil and being beneficial for N absorption of subsequent crops due to their conserving more N in the field and releasing considerable amounts of N from roots and leaves fallen to the soil.

  • Pseudallescheria boydii KNU13-2 was isolated from crop field soil and identified by analysis of internal transcribed spacer regions of rDNA and morphological characteristics. In the literature, P. boydii has been mentioned as a human pathogen. This is the first record of P. boydii isolated from crop field soil in Korea.

  • Cultivation of high-quality forage crop by using fallow field during winter is required for national high feed self-sufficiency and establishment of self-supply system of high-quality forage crop. Field experiments for cultivation of high-quality winter forage crop were conducted at the paddy and upland fields in Cheonan and Anseong city with treatments of single Italian ryegrass(IRG) and IRG mixed with forage barley at the paddy field and of single forage barley and forage barley mixed with IRG at the upland field in the Mid-west plain. Several cultivation conditions such as broadcasting IRG seed under standing rice, sowing time, tillage method, drainage condition, mixed sowing with forage barley were compared to know the change of growth, yield and quality of winter forage crop. In particular, over-wintering rate and dry matter yield were decreased significantly in late-sown IRG and moisture-stressed forage barley. Yield and quality of forage crops were increased by sowing after tillage, mixed sowing of IRG with barley at the paddy field with good drainage. High yield as much as dry matter $10MT\;ha^{-1}$ with high feed value could be obtained by early sowing of feed barley mixed with IRG at the upland field. Cultivation conditions such as early sowing, sowing after tillage, drainage management are required for higher dry matter yield, quality and stable cultivation of winter forage crops in the mid-west plain of Korea.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop an environment field monitoring system to measure crop growth. The environment field monitoring system consisted of sensors, a data acquisition system, and GPS. The sensors used in the environment field monitoring system consisted of an ambient sensor, a soil sensor, and an intensity sensor. The temperature and humidity of the atmosphere were measured with the ambient sensor. The temperature, humidity, and EC of the soil were measured with the soil sensor. The data acquisition system was developed using the Arduino controller. The field monitoring data were collected before a rainy day, on a rainy day, and after the rainy day. The measured data using the environment field monitoring system were compared with the Daejeon regional meteorological office data. The correlation between the data from the environment field monitoring system and the data from the Daejeon regional meteorological office was analyzed for performance evaluation. The correlation of the temperature and humidity of the atmosphere was analyzed because the Daejeon regional meteorological office only provided data for the temperature and humidity of the atmosphere. The correlation coefficients were 0.86 and 0.90, respectively. The result showed a good correlation between the data from the environment field monitoring system and the data from the Daejeon regional meteorological office. Therefore, the developed system could be applied to monitoring the field environment of agricultural crops.
