  • This study analyzes gender bias in children's informational books about science and science careers to determine how these early resources are affecting the disparity between males and females in science and engineering fields. The study focused on the number of male and female scientists both in pictures and text, and how much space was devoted to discussion of scientists of each gender. Overall, the findings of the study show that only 18% of the pictured scientists were female as well as only 16% of the scientists discussed in the text. These numbers are below current industry data that puts the number of females working in science and engineering fields at 26%.

  • We introduce an introductory engineering education course for engineering majors and non-engineering majors. This course does not require any previous knowledge and experience on engineering. It requires strong curiosities and imaginations on current and future society we live in, where technology is inseparable ingredient. Course encourages attendees to explore fundamental issues of engineering: what is proper technology and what are proper ways of exercising engineering, issues dealt in soft engineering. Since course topics cover many aspects of technology, traditional learning methods fail to be successful and efficient. Various efficient learning methods have been proposed and implemented. We utilize various interactive tangible media, which include simulated thought experiments and physical media experiences. About 20 episodes in short film format are produced based on scenario written according to related issues selected. Physical media like interactive robots are introduced for attendees' stimulated experiences. We summarize our exciting experiments on interactive teaching experiences at Pusan National University which include on/off-line interactions, assignments, projects, and evaluations.

  • For material characterization of semi-solid materials, backward extrusion process, which has been used in forming of hollow-sectioned products, was analyzed by the upper bound analysis in the current study. The existing kinematically admissible velocity field was applied to steady state at which there was no change in the assumed regions of velocity field. For unsteady state, new velocity field, as a function of dead zone angle, was proposed. Through the whole analysis, fiction between die and workpiece was also considered. It has been studied how the process variables, such as friction factor and punch velocity, and material parameters, such as strength coefficient, strain rate sensitivity could affect on analysis results. Finally, by the comparison with the finite element analysis, the reliability and efficiency of the proposed velocity field were discussed.

  • About 6,000 rock properties obtained from laboratory tests are collected from various projects conducted in Korea Peninsular and the distribution of the properties such as uniaxial compressive strength, cohesion, kriction angle, tangential strength, Young's modulus, p-wave velocity and S-wave velocity are analysed and correlated each other. The empirical equations deduced with 84% of reliability would be useful for preliminary design of geo-structures.

  • A clutch hydraulic system for automotive manual transmissions transfers hydraulic pressure generated by driver's pedal manipulation to the clutch mechanism. The foot effort when the clutch pedal is pushed is different than that when the clutch is returned. The effort or load difference, called hysteresis, is caused by the friction produced between rubber seal and inner wall inside the hydraulic cylinder. This clutch pedal travel foot effort hysteresis is essential for a clutch hydraulic system design and analysis. The dynamic model for a clutch hydraulic system is developed and a simulation analysis is performed to estimate the fiction coefficient as a function of the cylinder pressure. The simulation result is then compared to the measurements obtained from a clutch hydraulic system tester to ensure the reliability of the dynamic model and the coefficients estimated. Also the estimated friction coefficients at various pressure values are compared to those reported by an independent study.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify differences by gender and experimental treatment in the effectiveness of an anti handicap-bias program using a persona doll. The subjects were 60 kindergarten children of middle socio-economic status in Kyunghi Province, S. Korea. Treatment effects showed that the handicap-acceptance attitude scores of the experimental group were higher than those in the control group, and there were no significant differences in handicap-acceptance attitudes between boys and girls. Young children perceived the persona doll as a soul and a playmate and showed close attachment to it. They recognized the story of the persona doll as fact rather than fiction.

  • Wool and alpaca fibers were coated with polypyrrole by vapor-phase polymerisation method. The changes in frictional and tensile properties of the single fibers upon coating with the conductive polymer are presented. Coating a thin layer of polypyrrole on the alpaca and wool fibers results in a significant reduction in the fiber coefficient of friction, as the conducting polymer layer smooths the protruding edges of the fiber scales. It also reduces the directional friction effect of the fibers. Depending on the type of fiber, the coating may slightly enhance the tensile properties of the coated fibers.

  • For measuring friction-factor of artificially-roughened surfaces which are usually applied on damper seals, flat plate test apparatus is designed and fabricated. the measurement of leakage and pressure distribution through round-hole pattern specimen with different hole area is described and a method is discussed for determining the friction-factor experimentally. Results show that the friction-factor of the round-hole pattern surfaces is bigger than that of smooth surface and increases as increasing the hole area. A empirical friction factor model for round-hole pattern surface is defined as the Moody's friction factor formula.

  • This paper aims to present a taxonomy of non-standard words (NSW) for developing a French text normalization system and to propose a method for evaluating this system based on a corpus. The proposed taxonomy of French NSWs consists of 13 categories, including 2 types of letter-based categories and 9 types of number-based categories. In order to evaluate the text normalization system, a representative test set including NSWs from various text domains, such as news, literature, non-fiction, social-networking services (SNSs), and transcriptions, is constructed, and an evaluation equation is proposed reflecting the distribution of the NSW categories of the target domain to which the system is applied. The error rate of the test set is 1.64%, while the error rate of the whole corpus is 2.08%, reflecting the NSW distribution in the corpus. The results show that the literature and SNS domains are assessed as having higher error rates compared to the test set.

  • In future what kind of costume do we wear\ulcorner We can guess it is in advance through movie. Movie is a comnipresent medium and a mode of expression that reflect a distintive feature of the times like fashion. In many case costume design which belongs to a special era is based on the historic costumes but ostume design for future movie depends on the creativity of costume designer and director. Therefore it is interesting to research how costume designer get his/her design concept for future ccostume in movie how he/hse express his/her design concept through his/her costume and can we convince the design comes true practically in future. In this study I analyze the costume design of masterpieces among SF Film: (Metropolis/1926) (2001: A Space Odyssey/1968) (Star Wars/1977) (Blade Runner/1982) (The 5th Element/1977) Because this study is analyzed not through the original article but just through movie it has some limitation in exact materials or color.
