  • SBA-16 (Santa Barbara Amorphous) was synthesized over supported $TiCl_4/MgCl_2$. Due to its high surface area and excellent morphological performance, it was expected to form the bi-supported catalytic system and be used for ethylene polymerization. Polymerization of ethylene was carried out at atmospheric pressure using hexane as solvent and triethylaluminium as cocatalyst. ICP, FTIR, DSC, TG-DTA were used to characterize polyethylene and catalyst product. Optimum conditions for ethylene polymerization were found to be 100 mL hexane, Al/Ti molar ratio of 160 and 1 h polymerization at $60^{\circ}C$. The activity of 396.76 kg PE/mol Ti.h.atm was achieved. Melting point of the obtained polymer was in the range of $132-135^{\circ}C$ and the highest degree of crystallization was 46%.

  • In this paper is presented the solution method for three-dimensional problem of transversely isotropic body's elastoplastic deformation by the finite element method (FEM). The process of problem solution consists of: determining the effective parameters of a transversely isotropic medium; construction of the finite element mesh of the body configuration, including the determination of the local minimum value of the tape width of non-zero coefficients of equation systems by using of front method; constructing of the stiffness matrix coefficients and load vector node components of the equation for an individual finite element's state according to the theory of small elastoplastic deformations for a transversely isotropic medium; the formation of a resolving symmetric-tape system of equations by summing of all state equations coefficients summing of all finite elements; solution of the system of symmetric-tape equations systems by means of the square root method; calculation of the body's elastoplastic stress-strain state by performing the iterative process of the initial stress method. For each problem solution stage, effective computational algorithms have been developed that reduce computational operations number by modifying existing solution methods and taking into account the matrix coefficients structure. As an example it is given, the problem solution of fibrous composite straining in the form of a rectangle with a system of circular holes.

  • We prepared polycatenar 1H-imidazole amphiphiles having a structure in which a 1H-imidazole head was connected through a benzene ring to a pheny group having two or three oligo(ethylene glycol) chains and studied their supramolecular assembly by fluorescence spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). When the aqueous solutions of the amphiphiles ($5{\times}10^{-5}M{\sim}10^{-3}M$) were deposited onto a carbon-coated copper grid and dried, twisted structures with diameters of ~200-300 nm were imaged by TEM and AFM. We presume that the structures comprised a chain of the amphiphile dimers formed via successive hydrogen bonding between the 1H of the imidazole group and 3N of the neighboring one. In a solution of pH 4, entangled fibers with diameters of several nanometers were observed by TEM. In a pH 10 solution, film-like aggregates formed exclusively. The 1H-imidazole amphiphiles hydrolyzed tetraethoxysilane to induce gelation to form fibrous and spherical silica structures at neutral pH in aqueous solutions. No silica was formed when imidazole was used instead of the amphiphiles, suggesting that the selfassembled aggregates of the amphiphiles were responsible for the gelation.

  • This study describes spermatogenesis and sperm ultrastructure of the granular ark, Tegillarca granosa using light and electron microscopy. In the active spermatogenic season, the testis comprises many spermatogenic follicles that contain germ cells in different developmental stages. Primary spermatocytes in the pachytene stage are characterized by synaptonemal complexes. The early spermatids are characterized by the appearance of several Golgi bodies, increased karyoplasmic electron density, and tubular mitochondria. The mass of proacrosomal granules consists of numerous heterogeneous granules with high electron density that are about 20 nm in diameter. From the midstage of spermiogenesis, the well-developed mitochondria in the cytoplasm aggregate posterior to the nucleus and surround the proximal and distal centrioles. The proacrosomal granules condense and form a single acrosome with a thin envelope. During late spermiogenesis, the acrosome begins to elongate becoming conical. The sperm is approximately $35.0{\mu}m$ long and consists of a head, midpiece, and tail. The head comprises a round nucleus and a conical acrosome. A micro fibrous axial rod is observed between the nucleus and acrosome. The midpiece has a calyx-like structure with five mitochondria, and the tail, which has the typical "9+2" microtubular system, originates from the distal centriole.

  • $Ni_{0.2}V_2O_5$ aerogel (ARG) was synthesized via the sol gel method and has been studied with an emphasis on the characterization of its electrochemical properties. ARG appear to be amorphous layered material. Electron micrograph revealed that entangled fibrous textures has been grown to form anisotropic corrugated sheets. Several sites for the Li ion intercalation exist between the layers of ARG and average cell potential was 3.1 V vs $Li/Li^+$ Th charge transfer resistance increases 3 to 4 times as lithium composition increases, but the interphase resistance remains almost constant regardless of the lithium composition in thc ARG.

  • An experimental study was conducted to investigate the effect of carbon nanotubes on the zinc corrosion resistance of sealing layer formed on the Tungsten Carbide spray coating. Using the nanotubes, a sealing agent in the form of solid-liquid suspensions was made and applied to the surface of spray coating. A series of experiments, consisted of three stages such as preparation of test piece, molten-pot immersion test, and evaluation of micro structure, were undertaken to demonstrate complicated interaction existing between zinc ions and sealing layer containing the nanotubes. Experimental results showed newly developed sealing layer were less susceptible to corrosion and thus coated layer was well protected even in the case of 10 days exposure. Comparison of the micro structure after molten pot test also indicated that carbon nanotubes still remained in the matrix and organized more reliable frame work constituted with boron nitride and chromium compound. It was revealed that carbon nanotubes in the sealing layer played positive role to enhance zinc corrosion resistance in the perspective of both fibrous structure and inherent chemical stability.

  • The loess on the Chinese loess plateau is not only the accumulation of Asian dust but also the source materials of Hwangsa. The eolian carbonates of the loess were dissolved and reprecipitated to form secondary pedogenic carbonates by the post-depositional weathering during the interglacial time. Mineralogical analysis shows that the secondary calcites are composed mostly of a nanosized fibrous calcite with rather constant width ($30{\sim}50nm$) and highly variable length. The nano calcite is the major authigenic mineral, which occurs as the fine-grained matrix of the loess and paleosol. The nano calcite was recently reported in the Hwangsa, where it was originated from the source regions of Chinese loess plateau.

  • Fibroma of the tendon sheath (FTS) was initially described in 1936 by Geschickter and Copeland as a benign firmed soft tissue tumor that is rare and less common than another soft tissue tumors, especially giant cell tumors (GCT) of the tendon sheath. The common distinct feature is a slow-growing least painful rare entity arising from the tendon or tendon sheath. FTS is detected mostly in the fingers, hands and wrists but less commonly in the foot. Very few cases of FTS have been described arising from a flexor tendon of the foot. This article describes a 51-year-old patient with FTS that developed in the extensor tendon of the foot, which is the only known FTS to form in this area. Heterogeneous low signal intensity in both the T1- and T2-weighted images was observed in magnetic resonance imaging. The lesion was excised completely by open surgery. Histologically, it showed randomly arranged, fibroblast-like spindle cells in dense fibrous tissue and had insufficient hemosiderin-laden macrophages that are typical for GCT.

  • Objectives : Southern, northern, and wild types of Osterici Radix, and Notopterigii Rhizoma et Radix imported from China are circulated in Korea. Morphological identification was attempted by comparing external and internal forms of these materials. Methods : The slice of the tested material made by paraffin section technique was colored with Safranine Malachite Green contrast methods, and then observed and photographed by olymphus-BHT. Results : 1. Southern type of Osterici Radix has short rhizome and many small and long roots, while northern type of it is mostly composed of rhizomes with little small reds and sometimes looks like bamboo because of the extention of the parts between joints. 2. Parenchymal cell of southern type of Osterici Radix is filled with starch grain, while that of nothern type includes less starch grain with lamination crossed on its cell wall. 3. Surface of root and rhizome of wild Osterici Radix has some marks of fibrous root raised in the form of nodule, but cultivated Osterici Radix does not have this kind of marks. 4. Notopterigii Rhizoma et Radix is mostly composed of rhizomes, and its form is similar to that of a silkworm or joints of bamboo. Parenchymal cell is filled with starch grains, and lamination is crossed on its cell wall but not salient. Conclusion : Southern, northern, and wild types of Osterici Radix, and Notopterigii Rhizoma et Radix circulated in Korea can be easily identified because of their differences in their external and internal forms.

  • Statement of problem : Titanium is widely used as an implant material lot artificial teeth. Also, studies on surface treatment to form a fine passive film on the surface of commercial titanium or its alloys and improving bioactivity with bone have been carried out. However, there is insufficient data about the biocompatibility of the implant materials in the body. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine whether the precipitation of apatite on titanium metal is affected by surface modification. Materials and methods: Specimens chemically washed for 2 minute in a 1:1:1.5 (in vol%) mixture of 48% HF 60% $HNO_3$ and distilled water. Specimens were then chemically treated with a solution containing 97% $H_2SO_4$ and 30% $H_2O_2$ at $40^{\circ}C$S for 1 hour, and subsequently heat-treated at $400^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour. All specimens were immersed in the HBSS with pH 7.4 at $36.5^{\circ}C$ for 15 days, and the surface were examined with TF-XRD, SEM, EDX and XPS. Also, commercial purity Ti specimens with and without surface treatment were implanted in the abdominal connective tissue of mice for 4 weeks. Conventional aluminium and stainless steel 316L were also implanted for comparison. Results and conclusions : The results obtained were summarized as follows. 1. An amorphous titania gel layer was formed on the titanium surface after the titanium specimen was treated with a $H_2SO_4$ and $H_2O_2$ solution. The average roughness was $2.175{\mu}m$ after chemical surface treatment. 2. The amorphous titania was subsequently transformed into anatase by heat treatment at $400^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour. 3. The average thickness of the fibrous capsule surrounding the specimens implanted in the connective tissue was $46.98{\mu}m$ in chemically-treated Ti, and 52.20, 168.65 and $100.95{\mu}m$ respectively in commercial pure Ti, aluminum and stainless steel 316L without any treatment.
