  • Carbon-fiber which has very small radial dimension makes us difficult to measure it's properties. So in this paper, we suggest a simple method to measure the thermal conductivity of a carbon-fiber's and carbon-fiber-reinforced-plastics(CFRP) laminates. The thermal conductivity of CFRP laminates was measured experimentally at the same time analytically. The experimental model is based on the one-dimensional analysis of fin sample because CFRP laminates has a thin geometric configuration. The analytical model to measure the thermal conductivity of carbon-fiber is expressed by use of mean-field model which is based on Eshelby's elliptical inclusion problem. Therefore the thermal conductivity of angle-ply laminates can be computed by use of effective longitudinal and transverse thermal conductivities of unidirectional composite of the constituents.

  • A study of terahertz waves was made for the nondestructive evaluation of FRP (Fiber reinforced plastics) composite materials. The terahertz systems were consisted of time domain spectroscopy (TDS) and continuous wave (CW). The composite materials investigated include both non-conducting polymeric composites and conducting carbon fiber composites. Terahertz signals in the TDS mode resembles that of ultrasound; however, unlike ultrasound, a terahertz pulse was not able to detect a material with conductivity. The CFRP (Carbon fiber reinforced plastics) laminates were utilized for confirming the experimentation in the terahertz NDE. In carbon composites the penetration of terahertz waves is quite limited and the detection of flaws is strongly affected by the angle between the electric field direction of the terahertz waves and the intervening fiber directions. A refractive index (n) was defined as one of mechanical properties; so a method was obtained in order solve the "n" in the material with non-conductivity. The usefulness and limitations of terahertz radiation are investigated for the NDE of FRP composites.

  • Fiber-reinforced plastics(FRPs) have excellent specific stiffness and strength, so they are usually used as automotive parts that require high rigidity and lightweight instead of metal. However, it is difficult to predict the mechanical properties of injection molded parts due to the fiber orientation and breakage of FRPs. In this paper, the fiber orientation characteristics and mechanical properties of injection molded specimens were evaluated in order to fabricate automotive transmission side covers with FRPs and design a rib structure for improvement of their rigidity. The test molds were designed and manufactured to confirm the fiber orientation characteristics of each position of the injection molded standard plate-shaped specimens, and the tensile properties of the specimens were evaluated according to the injection molding conditions and directions of specimens. A gusset-rib structure was designed to improve the additional structural rigidity of the target products, and a proper rib structure was selected through the flexural tests of the rib-structured specimens. Based on the evaluation of fiber orientation and mechanical characteristics, the optimization analyses of gate location were performed to minimize the warpage of target products. Also, the deformation analyses against the internal pressure of target product were performed to confirm the rigidity improvement by gusset-rib structure. As a result, it could be confirmed that the deformation was reduced by 27~37% compared to the previous model, when the gusset-rib structure was applied to the joining part of the target products.

  • Warpage of injection molded product is caused by non-uniform shrinkage during shaping operation and relaxation of residual stress. Robust part design and glass fiber reinforced reins have been adopted to prevent warpage of part. Warpages for part designs have been investigated in this study according to the injection molding conditions. Part design contains flat specimen and two different rib designs in the flat part. Resins used in this study were glass fiber reinforced amorphous plastics, PC and ABS. Different rib designs showed significant differences of warpages in the parts. Various warpages have been observed in the three regions of the part, near gate region, opposite region to the gate, and flow direction region. Results of computer simulation revealed that the warpages were strongly related to glass fiber orientation. Flat specimen showed the smallest warpage and the specimen with ribs to the flow direction showed a high resistance to warpage. Warpage highly depended upon part design rather than molding condition. It was concluded that the rib design and selection of gate location in injection molding would be the most important factors for the control of warpage since those are directly related to the fiber orientation during molding.

  • This paper describes a method for a falling weight impact test to estimate the impact energy absorbing characteristics and impact strength of CFRP (Carbon-fiber reinforced plastics) laminate plates based on considerations of stress wave propagation theory, which were converted to measurements of load and displacement verses time. The delamination area of impacted specimens for the different ply orientations was measured with an ultrasonic C-scanner to determine the correlation between impact energy and delamination area. The energy absorbed by a quasi-isotropic specimen having four interfaces was higher than that of orthotropic laminates with two interfaces. The more interfaces, the greater the energy absorbed. The absorbed energy of a hybrid specimen embedding GFRP (Glass-fiber reinforced plastics) layer was higher than that of normal specimens. Also, a falling weight impact tester was built to evaluate the characteristics and impact strength of CFRPs.

  • Composite materials are widely used to make all kinds of machine parts, internal and structural materials of cars, aerospace components, building structures, ship materials, sporting goods and others, It is worth while to use composite space substitute material in various applications when compared with others. But the use of composite material is limited in the field of the mechanical processing because of the difficulties in processing. Thus, it is proved that the surface is rough at the in and out sections of the hole processing when the GFRP is machined with HSS drill in the vertical machining center. And it is observed that the more it is processed, the more the fluid type long chip is changed into the powdered chip.

  • In this paper, we analyzed the laminated composite sandwich plate structure of honeycomb core with changing values of the designing parameters. As a result, in designing parameters of that, the more height and thickness of the laminated composite plate's core, the more increase of natural frequency. The laminated angle has the maximum value when the plate of honeycomb core is join to opposite direction. This paper shows that the natural frequency of CFRP is higher than that of GFRP, and also impact strength marks maximum value in case of antisymmetry than symmetry of core. Also it shows that the mode shapes are various along with the angle-ply of laminated composite plate.

  • In this paper, we analyzed the laminated composite sandwich plate structure of truss core with changing values of the designing parameters. As a result, in designing parameters of that, the more height and thickness of the laminated composite plate's core, the more increase of natural frequency. In this type of structure, in the case of applying core of the laminated composite plate and antisymmetric stacking, natural frequency has high value and we calculated the optimum angle-ply making natural frequency maximum. Natural frequency of CFRP is higher than that of GFRP. Both are materials of the laminated composite plate. The mode shapes are various along with the angle-ply of the laminated composite plate.

  • A turning (facing) test on Glass Fiber Reinforced Plastics was performed with several tool materials, e.g., cemented carbides, cermet and ceramic, and the wear patterns and wear rate were analyzed to clarify the relation between physical(mechanical) properties and flank wear of cutting tool. The main results are obtained as follows: (1) When cutting speed is increased, the flank wear in every tool material grows the abnormal wear in the shape of triangle at a certain speed, i.e., a critical speed. (2) When cutting speed is increased, the wear rate in experimental tool material starts to increase remarkably at a critical speed. (3) The thermal conductivity among the properties of the tool material and the thermal crack coefficient of it are almost in proportion to the critical speed. (4) The order of performance in tool materials for cutting GFRP is K 10, M10, P20, TiC, CB.
