Enhanced tensile properties of fiber reinforced concrete make it suitable for strengthening of reinforced concrete elements due to their superior corrosion resistance and high tensile strength properties. Recently, the use of fibers as strengthening material has increased motivating the development of numerical tools for the design of this type of intervention technique. This paper presents numerical analysis results carried out on a set of concrete beams reinforced with short fibers. To this purpose, a database of experimental results was collected from an available literature. A reliable and simple three-dimensional Finite Element (FE) model was defined. The linear and nonlinear behavior of all materials was adequately modeled by employing appropriate constitutive laws in the numerical simulations. To simulate the fiber reinforced concrete cracking tensile behavior an approach grounded on the solid basis of micromechanics was used. The results reveal that the developed models can accurately capture the performance and predict the load-carrying capacity of such reinforced concrete members. Furthermore, a parametric study is conducted using the validated models to investigate the effect of fiber material type, fiber volume fraction, and concrete compressive strength on the performance of concrete beams.

A new type fiber optic sensing system has been developed as a commercially available standard using the technique of hetero-core spliced fiber optic sensor, for the purposes of monitoring large scaled structures, preserving natural environments and measuring physical phenomenons. The sensing system has been tested and evaluated in a possible outdoor condition in view of the full scaled operation at actual sites to be monitored. Additionally, the developed system in this work conveniently provides us with various options of sensor modules intended to measure such physical quantities as displacement, distortion, pressure, binary states and liquid adhesion. The experiment study has been performed to examine the performance to a pseudo-cracking experiment in the outdoor situation, and to clarify temperature influences to the system in terms of the coupling of optical connectors and the OTDR stability. It has been verified that the sensing system is robust to the temperature change ranging from the general condition to the hard condition. Especially, in this study, the specification and performances of the pressure sensor have been demonstrated to show the capability of inspecting various physical quantities.

Carbon fiber/epoxy composites using electrodeposited monomeric and polymeric coupling agents were compared with the dipping and the untreated cases. Treating conditions such as time, concentration and temperature were optimized. Four-fibers embedded micro-composites were prepared for fragmentation test. Interfacial properties of four-fiber composites with different surface treatments were investigated with simultaneous acoustic emission (AE) monitoring. The microfailure mechanisms occurring from fiber break, matrix and interlayer crackings were examined by AE parameters and an optical microscope. It was found that interfacial shear strength (IFSS) of electrodeposited carbon fibers was much higher than the other cases under dry and wet conditions. Well separated and different-shaped AE groups occurs for the untreated and ED treated case, respectively.
The theoretical membrane gas absorption module treatments in a hollow fiber gas-liquid membrane contactor using Happel's free surface model were obtained under countercurrent-flow operations. The analytical solutions were obtained using the separated variable method with an orthogonal expansion technique extended in power series. The $CO_2$ concentration in the liquid absorbent, total absorption rate and absorption efficiency were calculated theoretically and experimentally with the liquid absorbent flow rate, gas feed flow rate and initial $CO_2$ concentration in the gas feed as parameters. The improvements in device performance under countercurrent-flow operations to increase the absorption efficiency in a carbon dioxide and nitrogen gas feed mixture using a pure water liquid absorbent were achieved and compared with those in the concurrent-flow operation. Both good qualitative and quantitative agreements were achieved between the experimental results and theoretical predictions for countercurrent flow in a hollow fiber gas-liquid membrane contactor with accuracy of $6.62{\times}10^{-2}{\leq}E{\leq}8.98{\times}10^{-2}$.

In this paper, fracture tests were carried out in order to investigate the fracture behavior of SFRC (Steel Fiber Reinforced Concrete) structures. Thirty six SFRC beams were used in this test. The relationships between loadings, strains, and mid-span deflections of the beams were observed under the three point loading system. From the test results, the effects of percentage of fiber by volume, the fiber aspect ratio and the initial crack depth ratio on the concrete fracture behavior were studied, and the stress intensity factors, the thoughness index, and the flexural strength of SFRC beams were calculated. According to the regression technique, some empirical formulae for predicting the flexural strength of SFRC beams were also suggested.
A smart glass fiber reinforced polymer (SMFRP) reinforcing bar with a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor was fabricated using a pultrusion technique, while ribs were formed to improve bonding between concrete and SMFRP. Then, strain of SMFRP bars were measured for a uniaxial tension test of an SMFRP bar, and a four-point bending test of concrete beams reinforced with SMFRP bars. The results of a uniaxial tension test illustrate that the strain obtained from an FBG sensor agrees well with that obtained from electrical resistance strain gauge (ERSG). Additionally, concrete beams reinforced with SMFRP bars were fabricated, and actual flexural test were performed while the strain of with an FBG sensor was compared with that of ERSG. The experimental results demonstrate that SMFRP bars can be used as reinforcement of concrete member while providing deformation information. Furthermore, SMFRP bars may provide stronger durability and smart monitoring to reinforced concrete members under corrosive environments during a service life.

A detection technique is studied to determine the location and the weight of an intruder into infrastructure using fiber optic ROTDR (Rayleigh optical time domain reflectometry) sensor. Fiber optic sensing plates buried in sand are prepared to measure the intruder effects. The signal of ROTDR was analyzed to confirm the detection performance. The constructed ROTDR system could be used up to 12km at the pulse width of 30ns. The location error was less than 3m and the weight could be detected into three levels of grade, such as 20kgf, 40kgf and 60kgf.

In this paper an optical voltage sensor and an optical current sensor which can be used for the measurement of impulse voltage and current are implemented. BSO single crystal is utilized as a voltage sensor(Pockels effect cell). An rare earth doped YIG is used as a current sensor(Faraday effect cell). A new signal processing technique is adopted not only to avoid the influences o external optical fiber pertubations of transmitting optical fiber but also to improves the frequency response characteristics of the fiber-optic voltage and current sensors. Experimental results show that optical voltage sensor has maximum 2.5% error within the voltage range from 0V to 500V. and optical current sensor has maximum 2.5% error within the current range and that of optical current sensor is about 1.5% within temperature range from -2$0^{\circ}C$ to 6$0^{\circ}C$. The proposed optical sensors have good frequency response characteristics within the frequency range from DC to 10MHz.
A Fizeau interferometer without beam splitter was constructed. Single-mode optical fiber was used as a spherical wave source and the face of fiber end was polished and coated to be a reflecting surface. The reflecting surface was angled so that interference fringe could be detected by CCD camera. Beam splitter in front of a spherical wave source could distort the wave front and that was one of the component error sources. With the proposed configuration there was no need to place beam splitter in the system. Improvement of phase measuring accuracy was evaluated quantitatively by comparing the result of this setup with that of a conventional Fizeau interferometer. Wave front of the angled end-face optical fiber source was also measured to verify its sphericity by PS/PDI (Phase Shifting/Point Diffraction Interferometer). The principle of this technique was presented and the experimental results and its applications were discussed. ussed.

Regenerated cellulose fibers were prepared from three pulps containing different degree of polymerization(DP) and $\alpha$-cellulose contents by dry-jet wet spinning technique with cellulose dope in N-methylmorpholin N-oxide (NMMO). The effect of antioxidant, n-propyl gallate (PG) on the properties of different regenerated celluloses was studied using X-ray diffraction, copper number calculation, and viscometry. The degradaqtion of regenerated cellulose from pulp containing higher DP and lower $\alpha$-cellulose content was occurred more seriously. The tensile strength and initial modulus of regenerated cellulose fiber obtained from NMMO dope with PG were higher than those of fiber obtained from NMMO dope without PG. All fibers showed the round shape cross section and typical cellulose II crystalline structure.
