External confinement by CFS (Carbon Fiber Sheet) is a very effective retrofit method for the reinforced concrete columns subject to either static or seismic loads. For the reliable and cost-effective design of CFS, an accurate stress-strain model is required for CFS-confined concrete. In this paper, uniaxial compression test on short RC column with square section was performed. To evaluate the effect of confinement on the stress-strain relationship of CFS-confined concrete, CFS area ratio and tie area ratio are considered. Based on the experimental results, a stress-strain model is proposed for concrete confined by CFS wraps. In the development of the model, the method to compute the actual hoop strains in CFS jackets at the rupture was examined and resolved. Overall, the results of the model agree well with test data.
Carbon fiber sheet(CFS) has been widely used for strengthening of the concrete building structures due to its excellent physical properties such as high strength, light weight and high durability. Bond strength or behavior, on the other hands, between carbon fiber sheet and concrete is very important in strengthening the concrete member using CFS. Therefore the bond failure mechanism between CFS and concrete should be fully verified and understood. This study is to investigate the bond strength of CFS to the concrete by the direct pull-out test and the tensile-shear test. In the direct pull-out tests, the bond strength under the various environmental conditions such as curing temperature, surface condition on concrete and water content of concrete are evaluated. Also, the effective bond length, lu and the average bond stress, $\tau$y are examined in the tensile-shear tests. Based on the test results, it is concluded that the curing temperature is the most critical element for the bond strength between CFS and concrete. And, the proper value of lu and $\tau$y is recommended with 15 cm and 9.78∼ 11.88 kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$ respectively.

The flexural behavior of the reinforced concrete (RC) structure upgraded by external reinforcements was examined in this study. It is well known that the incorporation of carbon fiber sheet (CFS) with concrete is one of the most effective ways to strengthen the RC structure. Complete bonding is required between CFS and concrete in order to make the RC structure provide its full function until the time the Re structures serve. Many studies have reported that construction deficiencies have caused the debonding of the CFS from concrete before the RC structure with CFS reaches its ultimate capacity. This research took a systematic look at the failure mechanism, macroscopic load-deformation characteristics, the maximum load applied, and maximum bending moment when construction deficiencies exist. The results of the experiment conducted were compared with theoretically derived values. In the future, the results of this investigation will help minimize the factors of construction deficiencies, which may occur when CFS is used to reinforce a RC structure. The experiment was manipulated with steel reinforcement ratio and piles of CFS on a total of 14 beams ($20cm{\times}30cm{\times}240cm$). The results showed that internal moment capacity increased even when construction deficiencies existed. However, RC structures with CFS in the field still contain a considerable level of potential risks.

This paper presents a novel algorithm to reconstruct meso-scale representative volume elements (RVE), referring to experimentally observed features of Sheet Molding Compound (SMC) composites. Predicting anisotropic mechanical properties of SMC composites is challenging in the multiscale virtual test using finite element (FE) models. To this end, an SMC RVE modeler consisting of a series of image processing techniques, the novel reconstruction algorithm, and a FE mesh generator for the SMC composites are developed. First, micro-CT image processing is conducted to estimate probabilistic distributions of two critical features, such as fiber chip orientation and distribution that are highly related to mechanical performance. Second, a reconstruction algorithm for 3D fiber chip packing is developed in consideration of the overlapping effect between fiber chips. Third, the macro-scale behavior of the SMC is predicted by the multiscale analysis.

In general, RC beam members are designed as flexural members, considering only the bending load. However, in actual buildings, axial and bending load are simultaneously applied due to the continuity between members. As a result, the bending strength of the RC beam member increases, but the displacement decreases, and cracks are mainly concentrated in the center of the beam. Therefore, in this study, the bending performance of both normal and strengthened RC beam using carbon fiber sheets subjected to combined axial and bending load was experimentally evaluated. The carbon fiber sheets were wrapped around the middle of the specimens, and axial and bending load were applied simultaneously to the beams. The magnitude of the axial force and the effects of carbon fiber sheet reinforcement on the deformed shape, bending strength, deflection, and ductility of the RC beams were analyzed. The results show that as the applied axial force increased, the maximum bending strength increased, but the ductility decreased 64%. The bending strength of the strengthened beams increased up to 27%, the maximum deflection decreased around 8% and the ductility increased by up to 43%.
Molding of body with ribs is the most difficult during flow molding process. The rib area is easy to be deformed at the rear side due to wall thickness variation. In this study, relationships between molding condition and deflection of rib-shaped part is investigated during the compression molding of fiber reinforced plastic composites, and the following results are derived. Polypropylene(PP), Polystyrene(PS), and stampable sheet(SS 40wt%) show the increment of deflection along with releasing temperature. For the correlation between incremental holding pressure load and deflection, stampable sheet exhibits lower deflection along with higher holding pressure, while PS shows significant increase of deflection with higher holding pressure, PP shows completely different characteristic, significant reduction of deflection along with higher holding pressure. Regarding to mold temperature and deflection, deflection amount of SS is the biggest, and PS shows the smallest. In addition, all three kinds shows the highest amount of deflection at 173C. Deflection is reduced when mold closing speed is increased. Amount of deflection in SS is larger and is not highly dependent on molding conditions like holding pressure and cooling parameters, compared with single component material like PP. This can be elucidated by anisotropic and inhomogeneous characteristics of glass fiber during filling process of stampable sheet composite.

External confinement by CFS (Carbon Fiber Sheet) is a very effective retrofit method for the reinforced concrete columns subject to either static or seismic loads. For the reliable and cost-effective design of CFS, an accurate stress-strain curve is required for CFS-confined concrete. In this paper, uniaxial compression test on short RC column with circular section was performed. To evaluate the effect of confinement on the stress-strain relationship of CFS-confined concrete, CFS area ratio, spiral area ratio, and concrete compressive strength are considered as the test variables. Experiment results indicate that CFS jacketing significantly enhances strength and ductility of concrete. In addition, the CFS-jacketed specimens with the spiral steel show the lower load increasement ratio than those without the spiral steel.
In this study, standoff detonation tests and static beam tests on $160{\times}290{\times}2200mm$ RC beams were conducted to investigate the effect of local damage on the flexural strength and ductility index. And also, blast resistance of RC beams strengthened with steel fiber and FRP sheet were evaluated by these tests. The standoff detonation tests were performed with charge weight of 1kg and standoff distance of 0.1m. After the tests, crater diameters and loss weights of specimens were measured to evaluate the local damage of specimens. Flexural strength and ductility index were measured by conducting the static beam tests on the damaged and undamaged specimens. As a test results, normal concrete specimen(NC) showed relatively large crater and spall diameters that caused weight loss of 23.5kg as a local damage. Whereas, steel fiber reinforced concrete specimen(SFRC) and FRP sheet retrofitted specimens(NC-F, NC-FS) showed higher blast resistance than NC by reducing crater size and weight loss. Flexural strength and ductility index were decreased in case of local damaged specimens by detonation. Especially, large decrease of flexural strength was shown in NC as compared with intact specimen and brittle failure was occurred due to buckling of compressive reinforcement. In case of specimens strengthened with steel fiber and FRP sheet, residual flexural strength and ductility index were increased as compared with NC. In these results, it is concluded that critical local damage can be occurred unless enough standoff distance can be assured even if the charge weight is small. and it is verified that strengthening method using steel fiber and FRP sheet can increase blast resistance.
The main purpose of this study is to develop a commercial scale of pervaporative process equipped with hollow fiber membrane modules, being able to effectually purify organic solvent at high temperature well over its boiling point under high vapor pressure. Three constituent technologies have been developed; 1) to fabricate braid-reinforced hollow fiber membrane stable in high pressure and high temperature application, 2) to design and fabricate a commercial scale of hollow fiber membrane module, and 3) to design and fabricate a pilot scale of pervaporation equipment system. The developed hollow fiber membrane possesses a membrane performance superior to the membrane of Sulzer (Germany) which is the most-well known for pervaporation process, and the membrane module equips hollow fiber membranes of $4.6m^2$ and the pervaporation system can treat organic liquid at 200 L/h, which is based on the dehydration of 95 wt% isopropyl alcohol (IPA). Since the membrane module is designed to flow in and pass through the inside of individual hollow fiber membrane, not to involve both the formation of feed's dead volume observed in flat-sheet membrane module and the channeling of feed occurring inside hollow fiber bundle which lower membrane performance seriously, it showed excellent separation efficiency. In particular, the module is inexpensive and has less heat loss into its surrounding, in compared with flat-sheet membrane module. In addition, permeant can be removed effectively from the outer surface of hollow fiber membrane because the applied vacuum is conveyed uniformly through space between fibers into respective fiber, even into one in the middle of the hollow fiber bundle in which the space between fibers is uniform in distance. Since the hollow fiber membrane pervaporation system is the first one ever developed in the world, our own unique proprietary technology can be secured, preoccupying technical superiority in export competitive challenges.
Microstructural variation and strengthening effects with lamination methods of alumina fiber-reinforced ${\gamma}$-LiAlO2 matrixes for Molten Carbonate Fuel Cell(MCFC) were studied. The porosities of all matrix laminated by hot-pressing of two green sheets under 1 kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ at 45$^{\circ}C$ for 1 min and by double-casting which the second layer cast on the first green sheet dried for 3.5h were more than 50%. The strength of the Al2O3 fiber-reinforced matrix prepared by lamination was enhanced by 70% in comparison with the non-laminated matrix (115 gf/$\textrm{mm}^2$) and the strength-directionality due to fiber-orientation also could be removed. The strength of matrixes laminated by triple-casting was higher than that of the double-cast matrix, but triple-cast matrix showed the directionality with the casting direction, and furthermore its porosity was less than 50%. Although the strength of matrixes laminated by double-casting (195 gf/$\textrm{mm}^2$) is slightly less than that of matrixes laminated by hot-pressing (212 gf/$\textrm{mm}^2$), the double-casting method was evaluated to be more efficient laminating process in MCFC matrix processing.
