A new open-loop signal processing technique of digital phase tracking is known to have a Potential to solve the problems in the open-loop processor such as limited dynamic range, dependence on the optical intensity fluctuations, and dependence on gain fluctuations of signal path. But new problems with digital phase tracking must be solved before it can be a useful signal processing method. In this paper, barriers to the success of the digital phase tracking such as harmonics content, phase difference, amplitude variations of the phase modulation(PM) signal, bandwidth limit of the signal path, and the implementation of the mixer, are pointed out and their effects on the performance of the signal processor are analyzed to calculate the requirements of the signal processor for $1{\mu}rad$-grade FOG.
This study addressed a procedure to carry out an experimental study on a behavior of simple and continuous concrete beams. For this purpose, sample concrete beams were fabricated and sensors for the measurement of strains and deflections were attached both on the surface of the beams and inside them. Two types of sensors were used to measure strains associated with loading: electric resistance strain sensors and fiber optic sensors. Displacement gauges were also attached on the bottoms of beams to investigate the behavior of beams more rationally. The behavior of the beams was then evaluated throughout the results measured from different sensors while they were subject to steady loading up to failure. From results of this study, it was found that concurrent use of sensors and displacement gauges is helpful in investigating the behavior of concrete beams more effectively. Especially, combined-type strain sensors specifically fabricated in this experiment were found not to be affected by the occurrence of cracks so significantly and to be very effective in monitoring strains of concrete structure. It was also observed that beams show nonlinear force-displacement relationship and reinforcing bars take charge of resisting the external force once cracks occur in concrete beams.

A few years ago, for maintaining high stability and production yield of production equipment in a semiconductor fab, on-line monitoring of wafers is required, so that semiconductor manufacturers are investigating a software based process controlling scheme known as virtual metrology (VM). As semiconductor technology develops, the cost of fabrication tool/facility has reached its budget limit, and reducing metrology cost can obviously help to keep semiconductor manufacturing cost. By virtue of prediction, VM enables wafer-level control (or even down to site level), reduces within-lot variability, and increases process capability, $C_{pk}$. In this research, we have practiced VM on $SiO_2$ etch rate with optical emission spectroscopy(OES) data acquired in-situ while the process parameters are simultaneously correlated. To build process model of $SiO_2$ via, we first performed a series of etch runs according to the statistically designed experiment, called design of experiments (DOE). OES data are automatically logged with etch rate, and some OES spectra that correlated with $SiO_2$ etch rate is selected. Once the feature of OES data is selected, the preprocessed OES spectra is then used for in-situ sensor based VM modeling. ICP-RIE using 葰.56MHz, manufactured by Plasmart, Ltd. is employed in this experiment, and single fiber-optic attached for in-situ OES data acquisition. Before applying statistical feature selection, empirical feature selection of OES data is initially performed in order not to fall in a statistical misleading, which causes from random noise or large variation of insignificantly correlated responses with process itself. The accuracy of the proposed VM is still need to be developed in order to successfully replace the existing metrology, but it is no doubt that VM can support engineering decision of "go or not go" in the consecutive processing step.

Among many types of light rail transits (LRT), the rubber-tired automated guide-way transit (AGT) is prevalent in many countries due to its advantages such as good acceleration/deceleration performance, high climb capacity, and reduction of noise and vibration. However, AGT is generally powered by high-voltage electric power feeding system and it may cause electromagnetic interference (EMI) to measurement sensors. The fiber optic sensor system is free from EMI and has been successfully applied in many applications of civil engineering. Especially, fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors are the most widely used because of their excellent multiplexing capabilities. This paper investigates a prestressed concrete girder bridge in the Korean AGT test track using FBG based sensors to monitor the dynamic response at various vehicle speeds. The serviceability requirements provided in the specification are also compared against the measured results. The results show that the measured data from FBG based sensors are free from EMI though electric sensors are not, especially in the case of electric strain gauge. It is expected that the FBG sensing system can be effectively applied to the LRT railway bridges that suffered from EMI.

Purpose: We performed invasive thermometry to verify the elevation of local temperature in the liver during hyperthermia. Materials and Methods: Three 40-kg pigs were used for the experiments. Under general anesthesia with ultrasonography guidance, two glass fiber-optic sensors were placed in the liver, and one was placed in the peritoneal cavity in front of the liver. Another sensor was placed on the skin surface to assess superficial cooling. Six sessions of hyperthermia were delivered using the Celsius TCS electro-hyperthermia system. The energy delivered was increased from 240 kJ to 507 kJ during the 60-minute sessions. The inter-session cooling periods were at least 30 minutes. The temperature was recorded every 5 minutes by the four sensors during hyperthermia, and the increased temperatures recorded during the consecutive sessions were analyzed. Results: As the animals were anesthetized, the baseline temperature at the start of each session decreased by $1.3^{\circ}C$ to $2.8^{\circ}C$ (median, $2.1^{\circ}C$). The mean increases in temperature measured by the intrahepatic sensors were $2.42^{\circ}C$ (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.70-3.13) and $2.67^{\circ}C$ (95% CI, 2.05-3.28) during the fifth and sixth sessions, respectively. The corresponding values for the intraperitoneal sensor were $2.10^{\circ}C$ (95% CI, 0.71-3.49) and $2.87^{\circ}C$ (1.13-4.43), respectively. Conversely, the skin temperature was not increased but rather decreased according to application of the cooling system. Conclusion: We observed mean $2.67^{\circ}C$ and $2.87^{\circ}C$ increases in temperature at the liver and peritoneal cavity, respectively, during hyperthermia. In vivo real-time thermometry is useful for directly measuring internal temperature during hyperthermia.
Measurement of convergence was/is carried out manually throughout the world for tunnels under construction. However, manual method has certain limitations in terms of applicability for the tunnels in operation. This paper describes state of the art of convergence monitoring systems which are available for measuring displacement of existing tunnels. These technologies are analyzed as follows: 1 The Sofo system using the fiber optic sensors has been applied to the stress measurement of the tunnel lining. It has not yet been used for the monitoring of tunnel convergence because of its cost and reliability 2. A TPMS(Tunnel Profile Monitoring System) using tilt sensors and displacement sensors is used for the convergence monitoring of highway tunnels, subway tunnels and underground ducts. 3. A BCS(Bassett Convergence System) using a pair of tilt sensors can be used for the convergence monitoring of tunnels, however the accuracy of the measurement has to be improved because it uses AC input voltage during data acquisition. The system has to be validated before it can be applied to the tunnels in operation. Convergence monitoring systems using TPMS and/or BCS are recommended to be evaluated and improved by a series or tests in tunnels under construction in order to be applied to the main measuring section and the tunnels in operation.
KRISO (Korea Research Institute of Ship & Ocean Engineering) started a project to develop the core algorithms for autonomous intervention using an underwater robot in 2017. This paper introduces the development of the robot platform for the core algorithms, which is an ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle) type with one 7-function manipulator. Before the detailed design of the robot platform, the 7E-MINI arm of the ECA Group was selected as the manipulator. It is an electrical type, with a weight of 51 kg in air (30 kg in water) and a full reach of 1.4 m. To design a platform with a small size and light weight to fit in a water tank, the medium-size manipulator was placed on the center of platform, and the structural analysis of the body frame was conducted by ABAQUS. The robot had an IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit), a DVL (Doppler Velocity Log), and a depth sensor for measuring the underwater position and attitude. To control the robot motion, eight thrusters were installed, four for vertical and the rest for horizontal motion. The operation system was composed of an on-board control station and operation S/W. The former included devices such as a 300 VDC power supplier, Fiber-Optic (F/O) to Ethernet communication converter, and main control PC. The latter was developed using an ROS (Robot Operation System) based on Linux. The basic performance of the manufactured robot platform was verified through a water tank test, where the robot was manually operated using a joystick, and the robot motion and attitude variation that resulted from the manipulator movement were closely observed.

For most structural evaluation of bridge integrity, it is very important to measure the geometric profile, which is a major factor representing the global behavior of civil structures, especially bridges. In the past, because of the lack of appropriate methods to measure the deflection profile of bridges on site, the measurement of deflection has been restricted to just a few discrete points along the bridge, and the measuring points have been limited to the locations installed with displacement transducers. Thus, some methods for predicting the static deflection by using fiber optic strain sensors has been applied to simply supported bridges. In this study, a method of estimating the static deflection profile by using strains measured from suspension bridges was proposed. Based on the classical deflection theory of suspension bridges, an equation of deflection profile was derived and applied to obtain the actual deflection profile on Namhae suspension bridge. Field load tests were carried out to measure strains from FBG strain sensors attached inside the stiffening girder of the bridge. The predicted deflection profiles were compared with both precise surveying data and numerical analysis results. Thus, it is found that the equation of predicting the deflection profiles proposed in this study could be applicable to suspension bridges and the FBG strain sensors could be reliable on acquiring the strain data from bridges on site.
