  • In this paper, the crack properties fiber reinforced concrete(SFRC) beams by experimental method is discussed. The major role played by the steel fiber occurs in the post-cracking zone, in which the fibers bridge across the cracked matrix. Because of its improved ability to bridging cracks, SFRC has better crack properties than that of reinforced concrete(RC). Crack properties are influenced by longitudinal reinforcement ratio, volume and type of steel fibers, strength of concrete and the stress level. Crack width and number of cracks in SFRC beams have been evaluated from experimental test data at various levels of stress for the tested beams.

  • Deep coupling beams are more prone to suffer brittle shear failure. The addition of steel fibers to seismic members such as coupling beams can improve their shear performance and ductility. Based on the test results of steel fiber reinforced concrete(SFRC) coupling beams with span-to-depth ratio between 1.5 and 2.5 under lateral reverse cyclic load, the shear mechanism were analyzed by using strut-and-tie model theory, and the effects of the span-to-depth ratio, compressive strength and volume fraction of steel fiber on shear strengths were also discussed. A simplified calculation method to predict the shear capacity of SFRC deep coupling beams was proposed. The results show that the shear force is mainly transmitted by a strut-and-tie mechanism composed of three types of inclined concrete struts, vertical reinforcement ties and nodes. The influence of span-to-depth ratio on shear capacity is mainly due to the change of inclination angle of main inclined struts. The increasing of concrete compressive strength or volume fraction of steel fiber can improve the shear capacity of SFRC deep coupling beams mainly by enhancing the bearing capacity of compressive struts or tensile strength of the vertical tie. The proposed calculation method is verified using experimental data, and comparative results show that the prediction values agree well with the test ones.

  • Investigations on the behavior of steel fiber reinforced high strength concrete beams subjected to predominant shear are accomplished to determine their diagonal shear strength including ultimate shear strength. The parameters varied were the volume fraction(Vf) of the fibers, shear span depth ratio(a/d). The test result show that diagonal shear strength and ultimate shear strength are increased siginificantly due to crack arrest mechanism. Predictive equations are suggested for evaluating the diagonal cracking strength and ultimate shear strength of the fiber reinforced high strength concrete beams.

  • Steel-concrete composition is widely used in the construction due to efficient utilization of materials. The service load behavior of composite structures is significantly affected by cracking, creep and shrinkage effects in concrete. In order to control these effects in concrete slab, an efficient and novel strategy has been proposed by use of fiber reinforced concrete near interior supports of a continuous beam. Numerical study is carried out for the control of cracking, creep and shrinkage effects in composite beams subjected to service load. A five span continuous composite beam has been analyzed for different lengths of fiber reinforced concrete near the interior supports. For this purpose, the hybrid analytical-numerical procedure, developed by the authors, for service load analysis of composite structures has been further improved and generalized to make it applicable for composite beams having spans with different material properties along the length. It is shown that by providing fiber reinforced concrete even in small length near the supports; there can be a significant reduction in cracking as well as in deflections. It is also observed that the benefits achieved by providing fiber reinforced concrete over entire span are not significantly more as compared to the use of fiber reinforced concrete in certain length of beam near the interior supports in continuous composite beams.

  • This paper presents an analytical procedure for the analysis of high strength steel fiber reinforced concrete members considering the cracking effect in the serviceability loading range. Modifications to a previously proposed formula for the effective moment of inertia are presented. Shear deformation effect is also taken into account in the analysis, and the variation of shear stiffness in the cracked regions of members has been considered by reduced shear stiffness model. The effect of steel fibers on the behavior of reinforced concrete members have been investigated by the developed computer program based on the aforementioned procedure. The inclusion of steel fibers into high strength concrete beams and columns enhances the effective moment of inertia and consequently reduces the deflection reinforced concrete members. The contribution of the shear deformation to the total vertical deflection of the beams is found to be lower for beams with fibers than that of beams with no fibers. Verification of the proposed procedure has been confirmed from series of reinforced concrete beam and column tests available in the literature. The analytical procedure can provide an accurate and efficient prediction of deflections of high strength steel fiber reinforced concrete members due to cracking under service loads. This procedure also forms the basis for the three dimensional analysis of frames with steel fiber reinforced concrete members.

  • It is demanded to obtain the design data for bond length of the strengthening carbon fiber sheets. An objectives of this study is to provide preliminary data of rational strengthening design method which is adequate to current domestic status. The present experimental study was performed to evaluate flexural strengthening effects of steel reinforced concrete beams strengthened with carbon fiber sheets. Following conclusions can be extracted. It is revealed that the maximum load carrying capacity is increased up to 9% when the reinforced concrete beams were strengthened with 1-ply of carbon fiber sheet which is half-width of beam. The performance of reinforced concrete sections were improved due to the strengthening carbon fiber sheets on the tensile side of beams. It is believed that the strengthening length of carbon fiber sheets must be provided as (0.5l+3d) to secure the ductile capacity of above three for the flexural strengthening of reinforced concrete beams.

  • Shear failure of reinforced concrete (RC) beams is a major concern for structural engineers. It has been shown through various studies that the shear strength and ductility of RC beams can be improved by adding steel fibers to the concrete. An accurate model predicting the shear strength of steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC) beams will help SFRC to become widely used. An artificial neural network (ANN) model consisting of an input layer, a hidden layer of six neurons and an output layer was developed to predict the shear strength of SFRC slender beams without stirrups, where the input parameters are concrete compressive strength, tensile reinforcement ratio, shear span-to-depth ratio, effective depth, volume fraction of fibers, aspect ratio of fibers and fiber bond factor, and the output is an estimate of shear strength. It is shown that the model is superior to fourteen equations proposed by various researchers in predicting the shear strength of SFRC beams considered in this study and it is verified through a parametric study that the model has a good generalization capability.

  • Basalt fiber is an eco-friendly fiber and comparatively newer to the world of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites. A limited number of studies have been reported in the literature on the strengthening of reinforced concrete (RC) beams with basalt fiber reinforced polymer (BFRP). The present experimental work explores the feasibility of using the BFRP strips for shear strengthening of the RC beams. The strengthening schemes include full wrap and U-wrap. A simple mechanical anchorage scheme has been introduced to prevent the debonding of U-wrap as well as to utilize the full capacity of the BFRP composite. The effect of varying shear span-to-effective depth (a/d) ratio on the behavior of shear deficient RC beams strengthened with BFRP strips under different schemes is examined. The RC beams were tested under a four-point loading system. The study finds that the beams strengthened with and without BFRP strips fails in shear for a/d ratio 2.5 and the enhancement of the shear capacity of strengthened beams ranges from 5% to 20%. However, the strengthened beams fail in flexure, and the control beam fails in shear for a higher a/d ratio, i.e., 3.5. The experimental results of the present study have been compared with the analytical study and found that the latter gives conservative results.
