The effect of application of dentin bonding agent to the exposed dentin on the intradental nerve activity (INA), dentinal fluid movement and sealing of the dentinal tubules, was investigated in this study. The INA was recorded from the single pulp nerve unit dissected from the inferior alveolar nerve. And specimen of dentin was observed by SEM. Dentinal fluid 'movement through exposed dentin surface was measured before and after the application of dentin bonding agent. 1. Eight Ao-fiber units (conduction velocity: $8.0{\pm}4.0m$/sec) were identified. 4M NaCl evoked an irregular burst of action potentials which ceased immediately after washing. 2. In 4 $A{\delta}$-fiber units, appliction of All Bond 2 completely abolished the INA induced by 4M NaCl. Also, application of Scotchbond Multipurpose(SBMP) totally abolished the INA induced by 4M NaCl in 4 $A{\delta}$-fiber units. 3. Before the application of dentin bonding agent, outward dentinal fluid movement of $10.2{\pm}5.7\;pl{\cdot}s^{-1}{\cdot}mm^{-2}$ was obsered. But after the application of dentin bonding agent the movement of dentinal fluid was stopped. 4. The gap width of 2-$3{\mu}m$ was formed between exposed dentin and adhesive resin in the specimens applied with dentin bonding agents of All Bone 2 and SBMP. But the formation of hybrid layer and the penetration of resin into were dentinal tubules were not clearly observed in interface between dentin and adhesive resin.
The combined structure of hybrid composite made through the bonding process of materials of different properties greatly defines its mechanical characteristics, as the results of the experiments on materials of different properties show much dissimilarity. When carbon/epoxy materials are applied to hybrid composite, the carbon materials helps to improve the mechanical properties of the hybrid composite, and the epoxy reduces its fracture strain and impact resistance. Carbon fiber which is now in general commercialization is classified as high modulus or high strength system, and its manufacturing methods are various. The study of the materials having combined structure is focused on the numerical analysis of the layers of bonding surface in materials with difference modulus. The hybrid composite made through the multilayered bonding of reinforced aluminium sheets with aramid fiber now faces the marketing phase, and especially its excellent fatigue resistance and mechanical properties promote active researches on the similar products of hybrid composite. This study aims to investigate the effects of CFRP volume ratio and fiber's orientation over the properties of mechanical strength and fatigue life of the hybrid composite, AI7075/CFRP. To carry out this study, static tensile and fatigue tests were given to some of the panels which, made through the co-cure processing in an autoclave, have different CFRP volume ratio and carbon fiber orientations.
With the advent of CLSM in the end of 1980s, it has been applied to the field of pulp and paper science in various ways. This study showed the potentials of CLSM In analyzing a change of pulp fiber and paper properties before and after mechanical treatment. In particular, a quantification of internal fibrillation has been done using cross-sectional images of fibers and image analysis technique, then evaluated the effects of fiber wall delamination on fiber and paper properties. It showed that the delaminated fibers were closely associated to development of the interfiber bonding in a fiber network. The CLSM made it possible to investigate a density profile along the sheet thickness, which was created by some papermaking processes like pressing, drying and calendering. Through the attempt to observe the forming procedure of a fiber network during handsheet making, the CLSM images showed that the pressing stage was considered greatly to contribute to generation of interfiber bonding with removing a free water and partly a bound water between fibers. In addition, the CLSM could be used to illustrate not only a surface profile of paper showing the extent of smoothness or roughness, but also a density profile in a B-direction of the network. Finally it became evident that the CLSM could be used as an excellent tool to predict development in fiber and paper properties before and after mechanical treatment during papermaking processes.
PURPOSES : The objective of this study is to verify the effect of fiber grid reinforcement on the long-term performance of asphalt pavement overlaid on old concrete pavement by performing field investigation, laboratory test, and finite element analysis. METHODS : The reflection cracking, roughness, and rutting of fiber grid reinforced overlay sections and ordinary overlay sections were compared. Cores were obtained from both the fiber grid reinforced and ordinary sections to measure bonding shear strength between the asphalt intermediate and asphalt overlay layers. Fracture energy, displacement after yield, shear stiffnesses of the cores were also obtained by analyzing the test results. Finite element analysis was performed using the test results to validate the effect of the fiber grid reinforcement on long-term performance of asphalt pavement overlaid on the old concrete pavement. The fatigue cracking and reflection-cracking were predicted for three cases: 1) fiber grid was not used; 2) glass fiber grid was used; 3) carbon fiber grid was used. RESULTS : The reflection-cracking ratio of fiber grid reinforced sections was much smaller than that of ordinary sections. The fiber grid reinforcement also showed reduction effect on rutting while that on roughness was not clear. The reflection-cracking was not affected by traffic volume but by slab deformation and joint movement caused by temperature variation. The bonding shear strength of the fiber grid reinforced sections was larger than that of the ordinary sections. The fracture energy, displacement after yield, and shear stiffnesses of the cores of the fiber grid reinforced sections were also larger than those of the ordinary sections. Finite element analysis results showed that fatigue cracking of glass or carbon fiber grid reinforced pavement was much smaller than that of ordinary pavement. Carbon fiber grid reinforcement showed larger effect in elongating the fatigue life of the ordinary overlay pavement compared to glass fiber grid reinforcement. The binder type of the overlay layer also affected the fatigue life. The fiber grid reinforcement resisted reflection-cracking and the carbon fiber grid showed the greater effect. CONCLUSIONS :The results of field investigation, laboratory test, and finite element analysis showed that the fiber grid reinforcement had a better effect on improving long-term performance of asphalt pavement overlaid on the old concrete pavement.
Removal of fines from fiber furnish by fractionation improves drainage, but decreases fiber bonding in paper. Fines can be again classified by their size such as the fines that passed 150 and 400 mesh screen, respectively. A hypothesis of different properties between these two kinds of fines was tested. Four different furnishes (SwBKP, HwBKP, KOCC, and BCTMP) were refined in two levels, and all their furnish and handsheet properties were compared in respect of their fines. KOCC fines gave the slowest drainage and least contribution to breaking length while BCTMP fines the fastest drainage and the highest contribution to breaking length. Removal of the fines that passed 400 mesh screen gave high improvement in drainage and large decrease in breaking length. Only KOCC fines removal gave more positive results where there were large improvement in drainage but only small decrease in breaking length.
PURPOSE. To investigate the void parameters within the resin cements used for fiber post cementation by micro-CT (${\mu}CT$) and regional push-out bonding strength. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Twenty-one, single and round shaped roots were enlarged with a low-speed drill following by endodontic treatment. The roots were divided into three groups (n=7) and fiber posts were cemented with Maxcem Elite, Multilink N and Superbond C&B resin cements. Specimens were scanned using ${\mu}CT$ scanner at resolution of $13.7{\mu}m$. The number, area, and volume of voids between dentin and post were evaluated. A method of analysis based on the post segmentation was used, and coronal, middle and apical thirds considered separately. After the ${\mu}CT$ analysis, roots were embedded in epoxy resin and sectioned into 2 mm thick slices (63 sections in total). Push-out testing was performed with universal testing device at 0.5 mm/min cross-head speed. Data were analyzed with Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U tests (${\alpha}=.05$). RESULTS. Overall, significant differences between the resin cements and the post level were observed in the void number, area, and volume (P<.05). Super-Bond C&B showed the most void formation ($44.86{\pm}22.71$). Multilink N showed the least void surface ($3.51{\pm}2.24mm^2$) and volume ($0.01{\pm}0.01mm^3$). Regional push-out bond strength of the cements was not different (P>.05). CONCLUSION. ${\mu}CT$ proved to be a powerful non-destructive 3D analysis tool for visualizing the void parameters. Multilink N had the lowest void parameters. When efficiency of all cements was evaluated, direct relationship between the post region and push-out bonding strength was not observed.
Recently, natural fibers draw much interests in composite industry due to low cost, light weight, and environment-friendly characteristics compared with glass fibers. In this study, mechanical properties were evaluated for two extreme cases of jute fiber orientations, i.e. the unidirectional yarn composites and the felt fabric composites. Samples of jute fiber composites were fabricated by RTM process using epoxy resin, and tensile, compression, and shear tests were conducted. As can be expected, unidirectional fiber specimens in longitudinal direction showed the highest strength and modulus. Compared with glass/epoxy composites of the similar fabric architecture and fiber volume fraction, the tensile strength and modulus of jute felt/epoxy composites reached only 40% and 50% levels. However, the specific tensile strength and modulus increased to 80% and 90% of the glass/epoxy composites. The main reason for the poor mechanical properties of jute composites is associated with the weak interfacial bonding between fiber and matrix. The effect of surface treatment of jute fibers on the interfacial bonding will be examined in the future work.
