  • The micro optical parts such as ferrules are required to be manufactured within very small tolerances, as the slight deviation of the tolerance would give very large amount of loss in communication efficiency. For efficient optical communication, outer diameter, fiber diameter, fiber separation and eccentricity are significant parameters to be inspected., Thus we developed an automatic inspection system to evaluate shape parameters of the optical fiber connectors(ferrule) upto submicron accuracy using machine vision. new optical probe of multi fields of views has been developed and the image processing and data analysis algorithms have been complemented in real time basis. The developed system is successfully used in the practical ferrule manufacturing industry, and about 0.1$\mu\textrm{m}$ accuracy can be obtained with very fast inspection time.

지르코니아 광페룰 사출성형용 WC 코아 핀의 Diamond Like Carbon 코팅 (Diamond Like Carbon Coating on WC Core Pin for Injection Molding of Zirconia Optical Ferrule)

  • A diamond-like carbon (DLC) film deposited on a WC disk was investigated to improve disk wear resistance for injection molding of zirconia optical ferrule. The deposition of DLC films was performed using the filtered vacuum arc ion plating (FV-AIP) system with a graphite target. The coating processing was controlled with different deposition times and the other conditions for coating, such as input power, working pressure, substrate temperature, gas flow, and bias voltage, were fixed. The coating layers of DLC were characterized using FE-SEM, AFM, and Raman spectrometry; the mechanical properties were investigated with a scratch tester and a nano-indenter. The friction coefficient of the DLC coated on the WC was obtained using a pin-on-disk, according to the ASTM G163-99. The thickness of DLC films coated for 20 min. and 60 min. was about 750 nm and 300 nm, respectively. The surface roughness of DLC films coated for 60 min. was 5.9 nm. The Raman spectrum revealed that the G peak of DLC film was composed of $sp^3$ amorphous carbon bonds. The critical load (Lc) of DLC film obtained with the scratch tester was 14.6 N. The hardness and elastic modulus of DLC measured with the nano-indenter were 36.9 GPa and 585.5 GPa, respectively. The friction coefficient of DLC coated on WC decreased from 0.2 to 0.01. The wear property of DLC coated on WC was enhanced by a factor of 20.

의료영상전송시스템을 위한 POF 광커넥터의 최적 설계 (The Optimal Design of POF Optical Connector for Medical Image Transmission System)

  • For mass information transfer, the optical communication using optic fiber has been widely used. Especially, in the field of medical image, the large data is digitalized based on the standard image and it is used for telemedicine with this method. Therefore, to transfer the large amount of data fast and effectively POF (Plastic Optical Fiber) can be used and the development of optic connector for connection between POFs is very important. In this study, for stable optical coupling of POF optic fiber Ferrule and Sleeve were designed and produced by considering the bond stability and the insertion loss according to the physical contact and roughness profile was evaluated. As a result of examining the insertion loss by physical contact method of two optic fibers, it showed the loss was about 1.895dB. According to the results from studying the condition of grinding section for POF mass production, the mass production condition was established as POF profile roughness of 6nm and the loss of 0.2dB or lower by controlling the film size and time step by step.

  • 빛을 통신매체로 사용한 광통신은 저손실, 광대역성, 대용량화등의 장점 때문에 많은 중장거리 통신을 점유하고 있으며, 대형가입자군을 위한 광가입자망이나 LAN등에도 시험적용되고 있다. 따라서 광통신에 있어 광FIBER를 연결시키는 CERAMIC단자를 연구개발하는데 그목적을 두었으며, CERAMIC 단자의 재질로서는 구조재료로 주로 사용되는 ZIRCONIA(psz)를 선정하였으며 또한 정밀성형 및 소결등을 검토하였다.

The Reliability of Optical Fiber Assembly Using Glass Solder

  • In this study, an optical fiber assembly directly coupled with a laser diode or a photo diode is designed to confirm high reliable optical coupling efficiency of optical transmitter(Tx) and receiver(Rx). The optical fiber assembly is fabricated by soldering an optical fiber and a Kovar ferrule using a glass solder after inserting an optical fiber through a Kovar ferrule. The Kovar which has good welding characteristics is applied to introduce laser welding technique. The glass solder has excellent thermal characteristics such as thermal shift delamination compared with PbSn, AuSn solder previously used usually. Furthermore, the glass solder doesn't need fiber metalization and this enables low cost fabrication. However, the glass soldering is high temperature process over 35$0^{\circ}C$ and the convex shape after solidification due to surface tension causes the stress concentration on optical fiber. The stress concentration on the optical fiber increases the optical insertion loss and possibility of crack formation. The shape of glass solder was designed referring to 2-D Axi-symmetric FEM simulation. To test the mechanical reliability, mechanical vibration test and shock test were done according to Telcorida GR-468-Core protocol. After each test, the optical loss of the stress distributed fiber assembly didn't exceed 0.5 dB, which passes the test.

  • As optical connectors dominate the performance of optical transmitters or receivers, they need an ultra-precise processing and are composed of optical fibers, ferrule and optical glass lenses. Therefore, this study suggests a nondestructive evaluation technique or a system using resonant ultrasound spectroscopy to evaluate flaws in a optical glass lens. It also conducted a nondestructive evaluation for flaws that are commonly found in a optical glass lens and reviewed the results.

  • 광통신망 구축에 있어 광섬유의 접속을 위한 광접속기 소자의 하나로 광섬유 정렬의 핵심부품인 페룰이 있다. 광페룰은 통신품질의 향상에 따라 고정밀도의 품질수준을 요구되고 있으며, 이러한 광부품인 페룰을 가공하기 위해서는 동축연삭기의 초정밀 초미세 가공설비가 요구되고 있다. 이러한 광페룰 가공용 초정밀 연삭기의 경쟁력을 확보하기 위해서는 무하시 절삭력 또는 절삭토오크의 영향을 받지 않고 운전시의 정적 특성 및 동적 특성 영향을 최대한 배제할 수 있는 동축 연삭기가 요구된다.(중략)

  • 광산업 발전과 더불어 초정밀 가공부품이 요구되고 있다. 광산업 분야의 중요부품인 광커넥터의 페롤(ferrule) 및 광학기기용 렌즈이다. 특히, 이 렌즈는 높은 형상정밀도와 결함이 포함되지 않는 등 높은 신뢰성이 요구되는 실정이다. 이들 광소자들은 광원의 손실을 줄이기 위해서는 이들 부품의 초정밀 가공이 필수적이며 양품과 불량품을 판별하기 위해 완성단계에서 다양한 비파괴 검사가 이루어지고 있다. 공명 초음파 분광법은 물체의 형상, 탄성, 결정의 방향, 밀도 등에 의해 결정되는 공진주파수 응답 특성을 비교 분석하여 재료의 형상변화, 탄성정수 및 결함의 유 무를 검출해내는 방법이다. 따라서 현재 레이저용 프린터에 사용되는 비구면 렌즈의 질량 변화에 따라 공진크기 및 공진주파수 응답 특성을 통하여 분석하였다.

페룰 가공용 초정밀 무심 연삭기의 열 특성 해석 (Thermal Characteristic Analysis of a High-Precision Centerless Grinding Machine for Machining Ferrules)

  • To perform the finish grinding process of ferrules which are widely used as fiber optic connectors, a high-precision centerless grinding machine is necessary. The high-precision centerless grinding machine is consisted of the hydrostatic GW and RW spindle systems, hydrostatic RW feeding mechanism, RW swivel mechanism, on-machine GW and RW dressers, and concrete-filled steel bed. In this study, the thermal characteristics of the high-precision centerless grinding machine such as the temperature distribution, temperature rise and thermal deformation, are estimated based on the virtual prototype of the grinding machine and the heat generation rates of heat sources related to the machine operation conditions. The reliability of the predicted results is demonstrated by the temperature characteristics measured from the physical prototype. Especially, the predicted and measured results show the fact that the high-precision centerless grinding machine has very stable thermal characteristics.
