This study was designed to investigate the effects of iron supplementation and nutrition education on the iron status and anemia of high school girls. The subjects resided in Ulsan city in Korea and were already diagnosed as having anemia or iron deficiency. Over a period of three months, one iron tablet (80 mg Fe as ferrous sulfate/day) was administered to the iron deficient subjects and two tablets (160 mg Fe as ferrous sulfate/day) were administered to the anemia subjects. The average height and weight of anemia subjects were 161.24 $\pm$ 4.50 cm and 50.87 $\pm$ 5.86 kg, respectively. The average BMI (kg/$m^2$ )was 19.58 $\pm$ 2.03 and the PIBW(percent ideal body weight) were 92.52 $\pm$ 9.84%. Except for vitamin A and vitamin C intakes, the intake levels of all other nutrients were below the RDA. Total calorie intakes of anemia subjects were 73.5% of RDA. The iron intakes of subjects from food were 69. 1% of RDA and the Ca intakes were 59.1% of RDA. The basal hemoglobin(Hb) concentration of anemia subjects averaged 10.77 $\pm$ 1.33 g/dl, and this increased significantly (p < 0.001) to 12.12 $\pm$ 1.08 g/dl, after iron supplementation. The basal ferritin, and transferrin saturations {TS (%)}of anemia subjects were 12.51 $\pm$ 15.19 ng/$m\ell$ and 8.43 $\pm$ 7.56%, respectively, and these significantly increased to 20.59 $\pm$ 22.39 ng/$m\ell$ and 15.56 $\pm$ 12.87%, respectively. The level of total iron binding protein (TIBC) significantly decreased from the initial 486.80 $\pm$ 70.16 $\mu\textrm{g}$/dl to 417.86 $\pm$ 67.73 $\mu\textrm{g}$/dl (p < 0.001) after iron supplementation. For the iron deficiency subjects, the ferritin, iron and TS(%) levels were increased significantly (p < 0.001) and the TIBC levels were significantly (p <0.001) decreased after iron supplementation. Anemia symptoms such as 'Feeling blue (p<0.05)', 'Decreased ability to concentrate (p<0.001)' and 'Poor memory (p<0.05)' improved significantly after iron supplementation in the anemia subjects. The number of tablets administered was positively correlated with changes in serum hemoglobin (t=0.194, p< 0.01), serum ferritin (t=0.181, p<0.01), TS(%) (t=0.141, p<0.05), and hematocrit (t=0.254, p<0.01), and was negatively correlated with changes in TIBC (t=-0.143. p<0.05) and red cell distribution width (RDW, t=-0.140, p<0.05). In conclusion, daily iron supplementation was effective in improving the iron status and reducing symptoms of anemia in high school girls. (Korean J Nutrition 35 (9) : 943~951,2002)
A 3% NaCl solution of 1 $dm^3$ circulated with 1.5 $dm^3/min$ by a pump for 24 h in the presence of magnetic field. An iron plate immersed in a $100cm^3$ of test solution for 24 h. The rest potential and pH on surface fixed after 3 h. Containing 0~120 ppm of Fe(II) ion, the dissolution in the magnetically treated solution rose comparing with that in the non-magnetically treated solution. The dissolution amount reached to maximum at 50 ppm, then fixed in the non-magnetically treated solution. When Fe(II) ion existed in the magnetically treated solution, dissolution accelerated a little. In the non-magnetic treated solution containing 10~125 ppm of Fe(III) ion existed, the dissolution accelerated. The dissolution amounts reached to maximum at 50 ppm, then decreased from maximum value. In the magnetically treated solution, the dissolution amounts reached to minimum until 50 ppm, then increased from minimum value. The dissolution amounts affected larger with increasing of magnetic flux density. Fe(II), Fe(III) ions and magnetic treatment affected to formation of $Fe(OH)_2$ and/or $Fe_3O_4$ films. The magnetically treated effects memorized about one month.
Aluminum (Al) and copper(Cu) are non-ferrous alloys with excellent electrical and thermal conductivity but have relatively lower mechanical properties than iron alloys. Stainless steel(STS), an iron alloy, is a high-strength industrial material due to its excellent mechanical properties and corrosion resistance compared to non-ferrous Al and Cu. In this research combined Al, Cu, and STS to fabricate as a functionally graded material (FGM) through a powder metallurgical process. The produced FGM exhibited lightweight and excellent surface hardness compared to copper and iron alloys and also showed higher thermal conductivity than single Al and STS materials.
Fluorine-19 NMR solution measurements have been made for various phenyl-fluorinated iron porphyrin complexes. Large chemical shifts for phenyl fluorine signals of iron(III) and iron(II) are observed, and these signals are sensitive to electronic structure. The chemical shift differences in ortho-phenyl fluorine signals between high-spin ferric and low-spin ferric tetrakis(pentafluorophenyl)porphyrins are approximately 40 ppm, whereas the differences are approximately 7 ppm between high- and low-spin states of ferrous tetrakis(pentafluorophenyl)porphyrin complexes. Analysis of fluorine-19 isotropic shifts for the iron(III) tetrakis(pentafluorophenyl) porphyrin using fluorine-19 NMR indicates there is a sizable contact contribution at the ortho-phenyl fluorine ring position. Large phenyl fluorine-19 NMR chemical shift values, which are sensitive to the oxidation and spin states, can be utilized for identification of the solution electronic structures of iron(III) and iron(II) porphyrin complexes.

In this study, a remedial investigation using reductive stabilization was conducted to treat Cr(VI)-contaminated soil. The influences of various operational parameters, including reaction time and the mass of ferrous iron, were also evaluated. The study site was contaminated with a large amount of Cr(III) and Cr(VI), and the selected treatment method was to stabilize Cr(VI) with ferrous iron, which reduced Cr(VI) to Cr(III) and stabilized the chromium, although a greater mass of ferrous iron than the stoichiometric amount was required to stabilize the Cr(VI). However, some Cr(III) re-oxidized to Cr(VI) during the drying process, and addition of a strong reducing agent was required to maintain reducing conditions. With this reducing agent, the treated soil met the required regulatory standard, and the mass of Cr(III) re-oxidized to Cr(VI) was significantly reduced, compared to the use of only Fe(II) as a reducing agent.
The effect of ferrous/ferric molar ratio on the formation of nano-sized magnetite particles was investigated by a co-precipitation method. Ferrous sulfate and ferric sulfate were used as iron sources and sodium hydroxide was used as a precipitant. In this experiment, the variables were the ferrous/ferric molar ratio (1.0, 1.25, 2.5 and 5.0) and the equivalent ratio (0.10, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0), while the reaction temperature ($25^{\circ}C$) and reaction time (30 min.) were fixed. Argon gas was flowed during the reactions to prevent the $Fe^{2+}$ from oxidizing in the air. Single-phase magnetite was synthesized when the equivalent ratio was above 2.0 with the ferrous/ferric molar ratios. However, goethite and magnetite were synthesized when the equivalent ratio was 1.0. The crystallinity of magnetite increased as the equivalent ratio increased up to 3.0. The crystallite size (5.6 to 11.6 nm), median particle size (15.4 to 19.5 nm), and saturation magnetization (43 to 71 $emu.g^{-1}$) changed depending on the ferrous/ferric molar ratio. The highest saturation magnetization (71 $emu.g^{-1}$) was obtained when the equivalent ratio was 3.0 and the ferrous/ferric molar ratio was 2.5.
This study examined whether or not the iron that is accumulated in the recombinant microbes that produce ferritin is bioavailable to rats with iron deficiency. Rats induced with iron deficiency were treated with iron preparations of $Fe(NH_4)_2(SO_4)_2$, horse spleen ferritin, control yeast, and ferritin-producing recombinant yeast for 14 days. The bioavailability of iron was examined by measuring hemoglobin concentration, hematocrit value, and tissue iron stores. Differences between dietary groups were determined by one-way ANOVA, at the level of significance p<0.05. Based on hemoglobin concentration and hematocrit value, iron in $Fe(NH_4)_2(SO_4)_2$, horse spleen ferritin, and ferritin-producing yeast were bioavailable in rats and cured iron deficiency. The efficacy of ferritin and ferritin-producing yeast was confirmed in establishing tissue iron stores after the induction of iron deficiency. The iron sources of ferritin and the ferritin-producing yeast seemed to be as effective for the recovery from iron deficiency as the iron compounds of ferric citrate and ferrous ammonium sulfate. The results suggest that the iron stored in ferritin of the recombinant yeast is bioavailable, and that the recombinant yeast may contribute widely as a source of iron to resolve the global problem of iron deficiency.
Amyloid-${\beta}$ peptide ($A{\beta}$), generated by proteolytic cleavage of the amyloid precursor protein (APP), plays a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD). The key step in the generation of $A{\beta}$ is cleavage of APP by beta-site APP-cleaving enzyme 1 (BACE1). Levels of BACE1 are increased in vulnerable regions of the AD brain, but the underlying mechanism is unknown. In the present study, we reported the effects of ferrous ions at subtoxic concentrations on the mRNA levels of BACE1 and a-disintegrin-and-metalloproteinase 10 (ADAM10) in PC12 cells and the cell responses to ferrous ions. The cell survival in PC12 cells significantly decreased with 0 to 0.3 mM $FeCl_2$, with 0.6 mM $FeCl_2$ treatment resulting in significant reductions by about 75%. 4,6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI) staining showed that the nuclei appeared fragmented in 0.2 and 0.3 mM $FeCl_2$. APP-${\alpha}$-carboxyl terminal fragment (APP-${\alpha}$-CTF) associations with ADAM10 and APP-${\beta}$-CTF with BACE1 were increased. Levels of ADAM10 and BACE1 mRNA increased in response to the concentrations of 0.25 mM, respectively. In addition, p-ERK and p-Bad (S112, S155) expressions were increased, suggesting that APP-CTF formation is related to ADAM10/ BACE1 expression. Levels of Bcl-2 protein were increased, but significant changes were not observed in the expression of Bax. These data suggest that ion-induced enhanced expression of AMDA10/BACE1 could be one of the causes for APP-${\alpha}/{\beta}$-CTF activation.

The reaction between iron oxide and ferrous iron is known to be the adsorption of ferrous iron onto the oxide surfaces that produces Fe(II)-Fe(III) (hydr)oxides and ferrous oxide oxidized to ferric ion which is the reducing agent of the target compounds. In our investigations on DS/S using ferrous modified steel slag, the results did not follow the trends. FeO and Fe(II), the major component of steel slag, were used to investigate the degradation of TCE. Degradation did not take place for the first and suddenly degraded after awhile. Degradation of TCE in this system was unexpected because Fe(II)-Fe(III) (hydr)oxides could not be produced in absence of ferric oxide. In this study, the characteristics of FeO/Fe(II) system as a reducing agent were observed through the degradation of TCE, measuring byproducts of TCE and the concentration of Fe(II) and Fe(III). Adsorption of ferrous ion on FeO was observed and the generation of byproducts of TCE showed the degradation of TCE by reduction in the system is obvious. However it did not correspond with the typical reducing mechanisms. Future research on this system needs to be continued to find out whether new species are generated or any unknown mineral oxides are produced in the system that acted in the degradation of TCE.
We studied iron release from ferritin by irradiating the visible light, and then followed ferritin-mediated lipid peroxidation in the rod outer segment (ROS) fraction of the porcine retina. In the presence of several phosphorus compounds such as ADP and ATP, iron release from ferritin at pH 7.0 could be induced by irradiation of the visible light to the reaction mixtures. Furthermore, iron release from ferritin in the presence of ADP depended on the incubation time and the visible light irradiation. Moreover, we investigated lipid peroxidation level in the ROS fraction by two independent assay systems including the thiobarbituric acid (TBA) and ferrous oxidation/xylenol orange (FOX) methods. The visible light induced ferritin-mediated lipid peroxidation in the ROS fraction in time- and irradiance-dependent manners. In the dark condition, iron release and lipid peroxidation were not observed. Iron release from ferritin by irradiating the visible light may play an important role in the etiology of phototoxic injuries in vivo.
