  • High-order harmonics from gaseous atoms driven by an intense femtosecond laser pulse can form an attosecond pulse train. By selecting suitable harmonic generation conditions, the harmonic spectrum can be broad enough to form sub-hundred attoseconds. One serious limitation, however, comes from the inherent attosecond chirp originating from the harmonic generation process. We have proposed to compensate for the positive attosecond chirp by making use of negative group delay dispersion of a metallic x-ray filter or a gaseous medium. We generated 240-as pulses from neon and compressed them to 60 as after propagating through argon, close to the transform-limited duration of 47 as.

  • The damage threshold measurement of gold films is carried out with ultrashort-pulse laser. An enhanced two temperature model is developed to encounter the limitation of linear modeling during ultrashort pulse laser ablation. In which the electron heat capacity is calculated using a quantum mechanical approach based on a Fermi-Dirac distribution, temperature-dependent electron thermal conductivity valid beyond the Fermi temperature is adopted, and reflectivity and absorption coefficient are estimated by applying a temperature-dependent electron relaxation time. The predicted damage threshold using the proposed enhanced modelclosely agreed with experimental results, demonstrating the importance of considering transient thermal and optical properties in the modeling of ultrashort pulse laser ablation.

  • We study numerically the temporal evolutions of two orthogonally polarized pulses with width less than 100fsec in all-optical phase-shift switches. We analyze the complicated interplay between a soliton pulse and a higher-order soliton pulse, including the self-and the cross-Raman scattering and the walk-off effect. We also investigate the influence of these interactions on switching performance, including pulse-shape, phase-shift distribution, and contrast ratio. In particular we show that an optical fiber with a typical birefringence (Δn : 2.4$\times$10$^{-5}$ ) can be used with good switching performance in such all-optical switches.

  • A prototype of a relativistic proton generation system, based on laser-induced plasma interaction, has been designed and fabricated. The system is composed of three major parts: a fs TW laser; a target chamber, including targets and controls; and a diagnostic system for charged particles and lasers. An Offner-type pulse stretcher for chirped pulse amplification (CPA) and eight pass pre-amplifier are installed. The main amplifier will be integrated with a new pumping laser. The design values of the laser at the first stage are 1 TW in power and 50 fs in pulse duration. We expect to generate protons with their maximum energy of approximately 3 MeV and the flux of at least $10^6$ per pulse using a 10 $\mu$m Al target. A prototype target chamber with eight 8-inch flanges, including target mounts, has been designed and fabricated. For laser diagnostics, an adaptive optics based on the Shack-Hartmann type, beam monitoring, and alignment system are all under development. For a charged particle, CR-39 detectors, a Thomson parabola spectrometer, and Si charged-particle detectors will be used for the density profile and energy spectrum. In this paper, we present the preliminary design for laser-induced proton generation. We also present plans for future work, as well as theoretical simulations.

  • After the invention of the femtosecond pulse lasers, generating and detecting the coherent optical phonons in various materials became possible. In bulk GaAs, which is a polar material, the coherent LO phonons are known to be generated by the ultrafast screening of the surface space-charge fields. However, little is known about the generation mechanisms of coherent phonons in GaAs quantum structures. (omitted)

• An experimental study of energy absorption and x-ray emission from ultrashort laser pulse irradiation of in-situ produced solid clusters has been performed. Silver clusters produced by a 30 mJ, 300 ps laser pulse were irradiated up to an intensity of $3{\times}10^{17}\;W/cm^2$ by a 70 mJ, 45 fs compressed laser pulse from the same Ti:sapphire laser. Absorption of the laser light exceeding 70% was observed, resulting in an x-ray yield (>1 keV) of ${\sim}60{\mu}J$ pulse. This may constitute a much simpler means of intense x-ray generation using ultrashort laser pulses as compared to the irradiation of structured / pre-deposited cluster targets, and it offers higher x-ray conversion efficiency than that from gas clusters and planar solid targets.
