Investigation of dust particle removal efficiency of self-priming venturi scrubber using computational fluid dynamics

  • A venturi scrubber is an important element of Filtered Containment Venting System (FCVS) for the removal of aerosols in contaminated air. The present work involves computational fluid dynamics (CFD) study of dust particle removal efficiency of a venturi scrubber operating in self-priming mode using ANSYS CFX. Titanium oxide ($TiO_2$) particles having sizes of 1 micron have been taken as dust particles. CFD methodology to simulate the venturi scrubber has been first developed. The cascade atomization and breakup (CAB) model has been used to predict deformation of water droplets, whereas the Eulerian-Lagrangian approach has been used to handle multiphase flow involving air, dust, and water. The developed methodology has been applied to simulate venturi scrubber geometry taken from the literature. Dust particle removal efficiency has been calculated for forced feed operation of venturi scrubber and found to be in good agreement with the results available in the literature. In the second part, venturi scrubber along with a tank has been modeled in CFX, and transient simulations have been performed to study self-priming phenomenon. Self-priming has been observed by plotting the velocity vector fields of water. Suction of water in the venturi scrubber occurred due to the difference between static pressure in the venturi scrubber and the hydrostatic pressure of water inside the tank. Dust particle removal efficiency has been calculated for inlet air velocities of 1 m/s and 3 m/s. It has been observed that removal efficiency is higher in case of higher inlet air velocity.

오리멀젼의 가스화 반응 특성에 관한 수치해석 연구 (Numerical Study for the Reacting Characteristics of Orimulsion Gasification)

  • 본 연구에서는 오리멀젼을 연료로 하는 가스화기를 대상으로 전산유체역학 방법론을 적용하여 연료의 가스화 반응 특성을 파악하고자 하였다. 특히, 산화제의 양에 따른 가스화기내 생성 가스의 농도 분포를 예측해 보고, 분무되는 오리멀젼 액적의 직경 및 분사 각도, 그리고 연료 주입구에서의 유입 속도 변화등 연료의 유입 조건에 따른 반응장의 유동 특성을 고찰해 보았다. 본 연구에서는 산화제와 오리멀젼의 비가 0.88일 때 가스화 반응이 가장 활발히 진행되어 연료로서 효용 가치가 있는 CO, H$_2$의 농도가 출구에서 높게 나타났으며, 오리멀젼 액적의 직경이 작을수록 반응성이 좋았고, 분무 각도가 45$^{\circ}$로 유입될때 혼합 효과가 증대되었다. 따라서, 액적을 연료로하는 가스화기 운전시 유입되는 액적의 직경은 수십$\mu\textrm{m}$로 무화시켜 반응시키고, 벽면쪽으로 액적이 치우치지 않도록 적절한 각도로 분무시켜주는 것이 전체시스템의 효율을 항상시킬 수 있는 방안이라고 판단되었다. 또한 선행된 해석 결과를 토대로 100톤/일급 고온.고압 플랜트에 대한 해석을 수행하여 봄으로써 적절한 오리멀젼 가스화기 운전 조건의 기본 자료를 확보하고자 하였다.

An Artificial Neural Networks Model for Predicting Permeability Properties of Nano Silica-Rice Husk Ash Ternary Blended Concrete

  • In this study, a two-layer feed-forward neural network was constructed and applied to determine a mapping associating mix design and testing factors of cement-nano silica (NS)-rice husk ash ternary blended concrete samples with their performance in conductance to the water absorption properties. To generate data for the neural network model (NNM), a total of 174 field cores from 58 different mixes at three ages were tested in the laboratory for each of percentage, velocity and coefficient of water absorption and mix volumetric properties. The significant factors (six items) that affect the permeability properties of ternary blended concrete were identified by experimental studies which were: (1) percentage of cement; (2) content of rice husk ash; (3) percentage of 15 nm of $SiO_2$ particles; (4) content of NS particles with average size of 80 nm; (5) effect of curing medium and (6) curing time. The mentioned significant factors were then used to define the domain of a neural network which was trained based on the Levenberg-Marquardt back propagation algorithm using Matlab software. Excellent agreement was observed between simulation and laboratory data. It is believed that the novel developed NNM with three outputs will be a useful tool in the study of the permeability properties of ternary blended concrete and its maintenance.

LM 볼가이드의 마찰력 정식화 (Formulation of Friction Forces in LM Ball Guides)

  • LM 볼가이드는 구름접촉을 갖는 이송시스템의 핵심요소로서 공작기계, 반도체 장비, 로봇 등 정밀기계에 널리 사용된다. 그러나 LM 볼가이드에서 발생하는 마찰력은 마찰열을 유발하여 위치 정도를 저하시키고 강성과 예압 변화를 야기한다. 이런 영향을 정확하게 분석하여 정밀 기계설계에 응용하기 위해서는 마찰력 모델의 정식화가 요구된다. 본 논문에서는 구름마찰, 점성마찰, 슬립마찰을 고려한 LM 볼가이드의 정확한 마찰력 모델을 유도한다. 그리고 다양한 조립, 부하 및 속도 조건에서 실험을 수행하여 마찰력 모델의 신뢰성을 검증하고, 마찰력 모델로부터 마찰 성분의 영향력을 분석한다.

  • 최근들어 원자력 발전소에 유도 가열 공정으로 굽힌 배관을 적용하려는 동향이 있다. 이러한 유도 가열 굽힘 공정 동안의 열-기계적 메커니즘에 의해 잔류응력이 발생할 수 있다. 잔류응력은 균열 발생과 성장에 중요한 영향을 미치는 균열 구동력들 중의 하나이다. 그러나, 기존 연구들은 두께 변화, 타원도와 같은 기하학적 형상 변이에 집중하고 있는 반면 공정 변수가 잔류응력에 미치는 영향과 관련된 연구는 찾아보기 힘들다. 본 연구에서는 316 오스테나이트 스테인리스 강으로 제작된 유도 가열 굽힘 배관의 잔류응력 분포에 미치는 공정 변수의 영향을 유한요소 변수 해석을 통해 고찰하였다. 고찰결과, 굽힘 모멘트와 굽힘 각도는 잔류응력에 미치는 영향이 미미한 반면 유도 가열률과 이송 속도는 잔류응력에 상당한 영향을 미침을 확인하였다.

Experimental Study on Simplex Swirl Injector Dynamics with Varying Geometry

  • The effects of swirl chamber's diameter and length on injector's dynamic characteristics were investigated through an experimental study. A mechanical pulsator was installed in front of the manifold of a swirl injector which produces pressure oscillations in the feed line. Pressure in the manifold, liquid film thickness in the orifice and the pressure in the orifice were measured in order to understand the dynamic characteristic of the simplex swirl injector with varying geometry. A direct pressure measuring method (DPMM) was used to calculate the axial velocity of the propellant in the orifice and the mass flow rate through the orifice. These measured and calculated values were analyzed to observe the amplitude and phase differences between the input value in the manifold and the output values in the orifice. As a result, a phase-amplitude diagram was obtained which exhibits the injector's response to certain pressure fluctuation inputs. The mass flow rate was calculated by the DPMM and measured directly through the actual injection. The effect of mean manifold pressure change was insignificant with the frequency range of manifold pressure oscillation used in this experiment. Mass flow rate was measured with the variation of injector's geometries and amplitude of the mass flow rate was observed with geometry and pulsation frequency variation. It was confirmed that the swirl chamber diameter and length affect an injector's dynamic characteristics. Furthermore, the direction of geometry change for achieving dynamic stability in the injector was suggested.

Design for a Low-Pressure Hydrocyclone with Application for Fecal Solid Removal Using Polystyrene Particles

  • The separation performances for thirty different dimensions of a low-pressure hydrocyclone (LPH) were tested in order to obtain an optimum dimension scale for fecal solid removal from an aquaculture system. The geometric variables were considered on two inlet diameters (Di: 30 and 50 mm), five overflow diameters (Do: 30, 50, 60, 70 and 100 mm), and three cylinder lengths (Lc: 250, 345 and 442 mm), while the cylinder diameter (Dc) of 335 mm, underflow diameter (Du) of 50 mm and cone angle (${\theta}$) of $68^{\circ}$ were kept constant. A small size for carp feces was regarded as the target for the removal of solids. Spherical polystyrene particles (1.1-1.3 mm dia., ${\rho}_s=1.05g/cm^3$), which demonstrate a similar settling velocity and specific gravity to the carp feces, were used as feed. The separation performance was tested in the range of 330 to 1200 ml/s of the inflow rate. Experimental results using ANCOVA and the Tukey test (${\alpha}=0.05$) demonstrated that the separation performances of LPH were significantly affected (P<0.05) by fi, Di and Do. In contrast, there was no significant Lc effect (P>0.05) on the separation performances. The maximum separation performance was detected at dimension combinations of 30 mm of inflow diameter (Di), 50, 60 and 70 mm of overflow diameter (Do), 345 mm of cylinder length (Lc). The dimension proportions were 0.09, 1.03, 0.15-0.21 and 0.15 (or Di/Dc, Lc/Dc, Do/Dc and Du/Dc, respectively.

Development of a Low-cost and High-efficiency Post-harvest Bulk Handling Machinery System of Onion - Performance Evaluation and Control

  • As post-harvest processes of onions are carried by a 20 kg-net package which results in high-cost and low-efficiency, especially, the insufficient drying and physical damage of onions after harvesting leads to a huge second loss in storage, we had developed a low-cost, high-efficiency post-harvest bulk handling machinery system by collecting onions on a farm using ton-bags, drying with forced air circulation, and sorting/packaging. The post-harvest bulk handling machinery system consisted of 6 devices, and this study designed an automatic feed hopper with a feeding rate control device, an inclined belt conveyor with a two-step chute, and an automatic pallet unloading device for feeding onions into the sorting/packing line. This study also analyzed the performance and control of the total system. The device had 1-ton handling capacity, but the operational condition was set to increase the capacity. The three-step filling method of pallet by the velocity control of the inclined belt conveyor was applied in the post-harvest bulk handling machinery system for the prevention of physical damage. If one worker was set to operate the total system, the time required to complete one palletized load was approximately 5 minutes and 5 seconds. The calculated daily handling capacity was approximately 94 tons, when the daily actual working time was 8 hours. When the developed system was applied to the managerial size of 2,000 ton, the processing cost per ton of the system was decreased by 19.5%, compared with the existing 20 kg-net package-based handling. The developed post-harvest bulk handling machinery system would be a good substitute for the rapid decline and aging of rural labor.

Critical Design Status of the G-CLEF Flexure Control Camera

  • The GMT-Consortium Large Earth Finder (G-CLEF) is the very first light instrument of the Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT). The instrument is a fiber feed, optical band echelle spectrograph that is capable of extremely precise radial velocity measurement, and has been being developed through the international consortium consisted of five astronomical institutes including Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO), Observatories of the Carnegie Institution of Washington (OCIW), and Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI). The Preliminary Design Review (PDR) for the G-CLEF was held in Cambridge, Massachusetts in April 2015. It is scheduled to have Critical Design Review (CDR) in March 2018. Flexure Control Camera (FCC) is one of the KASI's major contributions to the G-CLEF project. In this presentation, we describe the current critical design status, and structural and thermo-elastic analyses results on the G-CLEF FCC.

벤토나이트 현탁액에 의한 정밀여과 막의 오염특성 (Fouling Behavior of Bentonite Colloidal Suspensions in Microfiltration)

  • 벤토나이트 현탁액에 의한 폴리에틸렌 정밀여과 모세관 막의 오염특성에 대하여 검토하였다. 막오염의 윈인은 막표면 위에서 생성되는 케익층의 성장과 입자들이 세공을 막는 표준 및 완전세공막힘 때문이었으며, 막오염은 이들 세 가지 오염형태가 동시에 발생하지만 케익여과오염에 의해 크게 지배를 받는다. 운전압력 $1.0kg/cm^2$에서 총 막오염에 대한 성분오염의 비율은 표준세공막힘 3.36%, 완전세공막힘 3.18% 그리고 케익여과오염 93.46%이었다. 현탁액의 농도가 1000 ppm인 경우에는 완전세공막힘 1.71%, 표준세공막힘 1.90% 그리고 케익여과오염이 96.39%이었으며, 운전초기에 총 오염의 96.14%가 발생했다. 총 오염에 대한 케익여과의 영향은 세공이 $0.34{\mu}m$막에서 컸다. 순환흐름속도의 증가로 인해 성분오염은 약 10.20% 감소하였고, 총 오염에 대한 세공막힘의 비율은 높았다.
