Bovine fecal microbiota is important for host health and its composition can be affected by various factors, such as diet, age, species, breed, regions, and environments. The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of diet and gender on fecal microbiota in Korean native Hanwoo cattle. The 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing of fecal microbiota was conducted from 44 Hanwoo cattle divided into four groups: (1) 11 heifers fed an oat hay plus total mixed ration (TMR) diet for breeding (HOTB), (2) 11 heifers fed an early fattening TMR diet (HEFT), (3) 11 steers fed the early fattening TMR diet (SEFT), and (4) 11 steers fed the late fattening TMR diet (SLFT). Firmicutes and Bacteroidota were the first and second most dominant phyla in all the samples, respectively. The Firmicutes/Bacteroidota (F/B) ratio associated with feed efficiency was significantly greater in the SLFT group than in the other groups. At the genus level, Romboutsia, Paeniclostridium, and Turicibacter were the most abundant in the SLFT while Akkermansia, Bacteroides, and Monoglobus were the most abundant in the HOTB group. Although the same early fattening TMR diet was fed to Hanwoo heifers and steers, Marvinbryantia and Coprococcus were the most abundant in the HEFT group while Alistipes and Ruminococcus were the most abundant in the SEFT group. Shannon and Simpson diversity indices were significantly lower in the SLFT group than in the other groups. Distribution of fecal microbiota and functional genetic profiles were significantly different among the four treatment groups. The present study demonstrates that different diets and genders can affect fecal microbiota and the F/B ratio may be associated with feed efficiency in Hanwoo cattle. Our results may help develop strategies to improve gut health and productivity through manipulation of fecal microbiota using the appropriate diet considering Hanwoo cattle gender.

Bifidobacterium bifidum BGN4 (BGN4) has many proven beneficial effects, including antiallergy and anticancer properties. It has been commercialized and used in several probiotic products, and thus strain-specific identification of this strain is very valuable for further strain-dependent physiological study. For this purpose, we developed novel multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) primer sets for strain-specific detection of BGN4 in commercial products and fecal samples of animal models. The primer set was tested on seven strains of B. bifidum and 75 strains of the other Bifidobacterium species. The BGN4-specific regions were derived using megaBLAST against genome sequences of various B. bifidum databases and four sets of primers were designed. As a result, only BGN4 produced four PCR products simultaneously whereas the other strains did not. The PCR detection limit using BGN4-specific primer sets was $2.8{\times}10^1CFU/ml$ of BGN4. Those primer sets also detected and identified BGN4 in the probiotic products containing BNG4 and fecal samples from a BGN4-fed animal model with high specificity. Our results indicate that the PCR assay from this study is an efficient tool for the simple, rapid, and reliable identification of BGN4, for which probiotic strains are known.
In order to detection of the Intestinal parasites, 503 fecal samples were taken from mongorel-and pad-dogs in Chonbuk province. The prevalence and identification of intestinal parasites were determined by the fecal examinations using the floatation and /or sedimentation methods and microscopical examination, respectively. The results were obtained as follows 1. Fifty-nine percent (297 dogs) from 503 fecal samples were detected eggs. In seasonal detection rate of eggs, Summer was 30.3%, Autumn 26.4%, Winter 22.3% and Spring 21.0%, in order, 2. A total of 20 kinds of eggs were isolated from feces, and it was identified 75.7% as Nematoda(320 dogs), 5.6% as Cestoda(24 dogs) and 1.4% as Trematoda(6 dogs), and 17.2% as Protozoa(73 dogs). The isolates were identified as Ancylostoma caninum (30.4%, 153 dogs), Isospora spp. (14.3%, 72 dogs), Toxocara canis(11.1%, 56 dogs), Toxascaris leonina(5.8%, 29 dogs) , Uncineria stenocephala or Physaloptera spp. (5.4%, 27 dogs), Trichuris vulpis(2.4%, 12 dogs) and the others, single or in combination. 3. In mixed infection such as single, double, triple and quadraple was 63.6%, 31.7%, 3.4% and 1.3%, respectively.

Background: To confirm whether shellfish are suitable for consumption, the quality of seawater and shellfish in shellfish-producing areas must be assessed regularly. This study was conducted to evaluate the bacterial quality on the Changseon area, containing a designated shellfish-producing area, in Korea during 2011-2013. Result: Even though many inland pollutants near the area were identified, they showed no significant impact on the designated area and the shellfish therein. The concentrations of fecal bacteria in all the seawater and mussel samples from the designated area during the harvesting season were within the standards of various countries. Pathogenic bacteria were not detected in any of the mussel samples. In our previous study, the hazardous metal levels in all the mussels from the same area were also within the limits of different countries. Conclusion: The mussel products in this area are suitable for consumption based on fecal pollution, pathogenic bacteria, and also heavy metals.
Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was developed to detect rotavirus antigen in fecal samples using VP6-specific monoclonal antibody(2B12). The ELISA for rotavirus antigen detection found to have specificity to all bovine and porcine rotaviruses tested but not to bovine viral diarrhea virus and bovine coronavirus. The ELISA appeared to have similar sensitivity and specificity compared to fluorescence antibody assay(FA) and electropherotyping (PAGE).
Fecal samples from Kim-Hae farm animals were examined for the frequency of gram-negative enteric organisms resistant to tetracycline, streptomycin, or penicillin. The propertions of antibiotic resistant to total organisms in fecal specimens of poultry, swine and cow were as follows: 95%, 92%, 70% for tetracycline, 100%, 27%, 9% for streptomycin, 18%, 1%, 1% for penicillin, respectively. The bacteria had multiresistance to antibiotics. These strains had more than one plasmid. From the transformation study, it was concluded that the resistance to streptomycin was attributed to one of these plasmids.
This experiment was carried out to evaluate general characteristics of the water quality, total coliform, fecal coliform and microflora at the St. 1 to St. 3 and St. 4 to St. 7. Eighty-four water samples were collected from the 7 stations from July 1988 to April 1990 (see Fig. 1) Range and mean value of the samples were as follows water temperature 2.0-29.9$^{\circ}$C, 16.3$^{\circ}$C pH 6.86-9.08, 7.62: electrical conductivity 54.85$\mu \mho$/cm, 4.300 m$\mho$/cm, 911.93 $\mu \mho$/cm : turbidity 0.9-36 NTU, 6.8 NTU, respectively. pH and electrical conductivity at St. 4 to St. 7 were higher than those at St. 1 to St. 3, but turbidity at St. 1 to St. 2 was 7 times higher than that at Sonagdong river area. The bacterial density of the samples ranged 91-110,000/100ml for total coliform. 21-15,000/100ml for fecal coliform. Specially, the geometric mean value of the St. 3 was 11,836 / 100ml for it leveled heavy contaminaiton. Predominant species among the 3,874 strains isolated form the samples were 30.6% Enterobacteriaceae, 14.7% Acinetobacter, 9.0% Aeromonas. 8.9% Neisseria, and 7.5% Vibrio.

This study investigated the effects of dietary phyate reduction on the apparent absorption and biochemical parameters of iron status in young Korean women. Fourteen healthy, young women consumed low and high phytate diets for ten days of each experimental period. Duplicate diet samples, a fasting blood sample on day 9, and complete fecal samples for five consecutive days starting from day 5 of each diet period were collected. The iron content of diet and fecal samples were analyzed to calculate apparent absorption. Serum samples were analyzed for iron, ferritin, transferrin receptor and TIBC; transferrin saturation was also calculated. The apparent absorption of iron tended to increase in the low phytate period (32.51%) compared to the high phytate period (17.91%), but the difference was not significant (p=0.06). Serum ferritin decreased and serum transferrin receptor increased significantly during the low phytate diet although the mean values were within the normal range. Serum iron and transferrin saturation did not change significantly. In conclusion, the results indicated that reducing dietary phytate for ten days negatively affected iron nutritional parameters, but it moderately and positively affected apparent iron absorption in young Korean women. Further research on the long-term effects of a low phytate diet with an adequate iron content for vows Korean women is necessary.
Objective: The objective of the study was to determine the influence of varying fibrous diets on fecal characteristics of growing pigs. Methods: A total of 104 pigs (initial weight $18{\pm}2.0kg$) were used in the study. They were housed in individual pens and fed on diets containing maize cob, grass hay, lucerne hay, maize stover, and sunflower husk. These fibers were included at 0, 80, 160, 240, 320 and 400 g/kg. Fecal and urine samples were collected. Results: Fecal output was largest amongst pigs fed on diets containing grass hay and maize stover (p<0.05). Nitrogen content was highest in feces from pigs fed on sunflower husk (p<0.05). Pigs fed on diets containing maize stover and maize cobs produced the largest concentrations of short chain fatty acids. Acetate concentration was high in feces of pigs fed maize stover than those fed grass hay and lucerne hay (p<0.05). As the level of fiber inclusion increased, fecal consistency and nitrogen content increased linearly (p<0.05). Urea nitrogen decreased as the inclusion level increased across all the fibers (p<0.05), with maize cobs containing the largest content of urea nitrogen. As dietary fiber content increased, fecal nitrogen content also increased (p<0.05). Conclusion: It was concluded that different fiber sources influence fecal characteristics, thereby having different implications on pig waste management. It is vital to monitor fiber inclusion thresholds so as to easily manage environmental pollutants such as butyrate that contribute to odors.
This examination was carried out to evaluate the sanitary quality of slices of raw fish being served in the restaurants. Twenty five kinds of slices of raw fish collected from various restaurants in Busan Korea were examined during the period from March to May in 1971. As the evaluation factors of sanitary quality, the contents of sanitary indicative bacteria such as coliform group, fecal coliform, feral streptococci and enterococci and plate counts were determined. The results obtained are as in below: 1. The numbers of fecal streptococci and enterococci MPN were much greater than those of coliform group and fecal coliform. 2. The median value of coliform group MPN was 3,300 per 100 grams of the sample examined and those of enterococci was 5,400. The median value of plate counts was $1.8\times10^5$ per gram. 3. Fifty-two percent of the samples examined were exceeded fecal coliform MPN 930 per 100 grams. 4. As a sanitary indicative bacteria fecal coliform MPN was more reasonable than enterococci 5. The grade of restaurants was not correlated with the bacterial quality of the foods served. 6. No correlation between the numbers of sanitary indicative bacteria ana plate counts was observed.
