In this paper, feature extraction methods, which is one field of reducing dimensions of high-dimensional data, are empirically investigated. We selected the traditional PCA(Principal Component Analysis), ICA(Independent Component Analysis), NMF(Non-negative Matrix Factorization), and sNMF(Sparse NMF) for comparisons. ICA has a similar feature with the simple cell of V1. NMF implemented a "parts-based representation in the brain" and sNMF is a improved version of NMF. In order to visually investigate the extracted features, handwritten digits are handled. Also, the extracted features are used to train multi-layer perceptrons for recognition test. The characteristic of each feature extraction method will be useful when applying feature extraction methods to many real-world problems.

An application of Gammatone auditory filterbank for emotion recognition from speech is described in this paper. Gammatone filterbank is a bank of Gammatone filters which are used as a preprocessing stage before applying feature extraction methods to get the most relevant features for emotion recognition from speech. In the feature extraction step, the energy value of output signal of each filter is computed and combined with other of all filters to produce a feature vector for the learning step. A feature vector is estimated in a short time period of input speech signal to take the advantage of dependence on time domain. Finally, in the learning step, Hidden Markov Model (HMM) is used to create a model for each emotion class and recognize a particular input emotional speech. In the experiment, feature extraction based on Gammatone filterbank (GTF) shows the better outcomes in comparison with features based on Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coefficient (MFCC) which is a well-known feature extraction for speech recognition as well as emotion recognition from speech.

In this paper the Maximum Block Method is suggested for the Feature Extraction of stokes of off-line Chinese characters. The Maximum Block Method is a technique which enlarges the block from the first found pixel that wxtracts the skeleton and features of the input characters. The maximum Block mthod is an adequate technique for the correct extraction of the features since the exsting thining methods have shortcomings of making the feature extraction difficult from the distoritions generated from the effiects of the parial noises, inflection points and blemishes. The printed outputs and chinese books of the middle and high school students, and other materials are used for the test.It was found that the Maxthod is also an effective technique for the extraction of skeleton line and features, which is the preoprocessing of the pattern recognition, for the Korean chracters and English as well as chinese chracters.

Facial analysis is used in many applications like face recognition systems, human-computer interface through head movements or facial expressions, model based coding, or virtual reality. In all these applications a very precise extraction of facial feature points are necessary. In this paper we presents a method for automatic extraction of the facial features Points such as mouth corners, eye corners, eyebrow corners. First, face region is detected by AdaBoost-based object detection algorithm. Then a combination of three kinds of feature energy for facial features are computed; valley energy, intensity energy and edge energy. After feature area are detected by searching horizontal rectangles which has high feature energy. Finally, a corner detection algorithm is applied on the end region of each feature area. Because we integrate three feature energy and the suggested estimation method for valley energy and intensity energy are adaptive to the illumination change, the proposed feature extraction method is robust under various conditions.

In Recent times, Netizens have frequently use virtual character 'Avatar' schemes in order to present their own identity, there is a strong need for avatars to resemble the user. This paper proposes an extraction technique for facial region and features that are used in generating the avatar automatically. For extraction of facial feature component, the method uses ACM and edge information. Also, in the extraction process of facial region, the proposed method reduces the effect of lights and poor image quality on low resolution pictures. this is achieved by using the variation of facial area size which is employed for external energy of ACM. Our experiments show that the success rate of extracting facial regions is $92{\%}$ and accuracy rate of extracting facial feature components is $83.4{\%}$, our results provide good evidence that the suggested method can extract the facial regions and features accurately, moreover this technique can be used in the process of handling features according to the pattern parts of automatic avatar generation system in the near future.
Machine learning (ML) is a method of fitting given data to a mathematical model to derive insights or to predict. In the age of big data, where the amount of available data increases exponentially due to the development of information technology and smart devices, ML shows high prediction performance due to pattern detection without bias. The feature engineering that generates the features that can explain the problem to be solved in the ML process has a great influence on the performance and its importance is continuously emphasized. Despite this importance, however, it is still considered a difficult task as it requires a thorough understanding of the domain characteristics as well as an understanding of source data and the iterative procedure. Therefore, we propose methods to apply deep learning for solving the complexity and difficulty of feature extraction and improving the performance of ML model. Unlike other techniques, the most common reason for the superior performance of deep learning techniques in complex unstructured data processing is that it is possible to extract features from the source data itself. In order to apply these advantages to the business problems, we propose deep learning based methods that can automatically extract features from transaction data or directly predict and classify target variables. In particular, we applied techniques that show high performance in existing text processing based on the structural similarity between transaction data and text data. And we also verified the suitability of each method according to the characteristics of transaction data. Through our study, it is possible not only to search for the possibility of automated feature extraction but also to obtain a benchmark model that shows a certain level of performance before performing the feature extraction task by a human. In addition, it is expected that it will be able to provide guidelines for choosing a suitable deep learning model based on the business problem and the data characteristics.

In this paper, we have proposed the efficient algorithm that can segment the video scene change using a various statistical characteristics obtained from by applying the wavelet transformation for each frames. Our method firstly extracts the histogram features from low frequency subband of wavelet-transformed image and then uses these features to detect the abrupt scene change. Second, it extracts the edge information from applying the mesh method to the high frequency subband of transformed image. We quantify the extracted edge information as the values of variance characteristic of each pixel and use these values to detect the gradual scene change. And we have also proposed an algorithm how extract the proper key frame from segmented video scene. Experiment results show that the proposed method is both very efficient algorithm in segmenting video frames and also is to become the appropriate key frame extraction method.

In this paper, we presents a new methodology for face recognition after analysing conventional ICA(Independent Component Analysis) based approach. In the literature we found that ICA based methods have followed the same procedure without any exception, first PCA(Principal Component Analysis) has been used for feature extraction, next ICA learning method has been applied for feature enhancement in the reduced dimension. However, it is contradiction that features are extracted using higher order moments depend on variance, the second order statistics. It is not considered that a necessary component can be located in the discarded feature space. In the new methodology, features are extracted using the magnitude of kurtosis(4-th order central moment or cumulant). This corresponds to the PCA based feature extraction using eigenvalue(2nd order central moment or variance). The synergy effect of PCA and ICA can be achieved if PCA is used for noise reduction filter. ICA methodology is analysed using SVD(Singular Value Decomposition). PCA does whitening and noise reduction. ICA performs the feature extraction. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the methodology compared to the conventional ICA approach.
An emotion detection algorithm using frontal facial image is presented in this paper. The algorithm is composed of three main stages: image processing stage and facial feature extraction stage, and emotion detection stage. In image processing stage, the face region and facial component is extracted by using fuzzy color filter, virtual face model, and histogram analysis method. The features for emotion detection are extracted from facial component in facial feature extraction stage. In emotion detection stage, the fuzzy classifier is adopted to recognize emotion from extracted features. It is shown by experiment results that the proposed algorithm can detect emotion well.
Accurate and robust image registration is important task in many applications such as image retrieval and computer vision. To perform the image registration, essential required steps are needed in the process: feature detection, extraction, matching, and reconstruction of image. In the process of these function, feature extraction not only plays a key role, but also have a big effect on its performance. There are two representative algorithms for extracting image features, which are scale invariant feature transform (SIFT) and speeded up robust feature (SURF). In this paper, we present and evaluate two methods, focusing on comparative analysis of the performance. Experiments for accurate and robust feature detection are shown on various environments such like scale changes, rotation and affine transformation. Experimental trials revealed that SURF algorithm exhibited a significant result in both extracting feature points and matching time, compared to SIFT method.
