  • As development of digital technology, many kinds of multimedia data are used variously and requirements for effective use by user are increasing. In order to transfer information fast and precisely what user wants, effective retrieval method is required. As existing multimedia data are impossible to apply the MPEG-1, MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 technologies which are aimed at compression, store and transmission. So MPEG-7 is introduced as a new technology for effective management and retrieval of multimedia data. In this paper, we extract content-based features using color descriptor among the MPEG-7 standardization visual descriptor, and reduce feature data applying PCA(Principal Components Analysis) technique. We model the cerebral cortex and hippocampal neural network in engineering domain, and team content-based feature vectors fast and apply the hippocampal neural network algorithm to compose of optimized feature. And then we present fast and precise retrieval effect when indexing and retrieving.

  • This paper is to provide an integration approach between design and process planning for mechanical parts, using feature recognition. We develop a method to extract each individual feature of an object from 3D modeling data using face-edge graph based algorithm and then propose an approach to recognize the volumic form features using heuristic rules. we demonstrate the proposed approaches are effective for such basic shapes as pocket, slot, through hole, etc.

  • This paper presents the feature extraction of fault current related to the multi-shot reclosing scheme in the power distribution system. Fourier transform is used to extract the feature of the fault current waveform in the case of the temporary fault and the permanent fault. After the waveform is analyzed using Fourier transform, the magnitude spectrum and the relative variation of THD are calculated. These results are that the relative variation of THD is great in the temporary fault and is little in the permanent fault.

  • In this paper we propose a facial feature extraction method by using a genetic algorithm. The method uses a facial feature template to model the location of eyes and a mouth, and genetic algorithm is employed to find the optimal solution from the fitness function consisting of invariant moments. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can effectively extract facial features from face images with variations in position, size, rotation and expression.

  • This paper presents a new classified vector quantization (VQ) technique using a neural network model in the transform domain. Prior to designing a codebook, the proposed approach extracts class features from a set of images using self-organizing feature map (SOFM) that has the pattern recognition characteristics and the same as VQ objective. Since we extract the class features from the training images unlike previous approaches, the reconstructed image quality is improved. Moreover, exploiting the adaptivity of the neural network model makes our approach be easily applied to designing a new vector quantizer when the processed image characteristics are changed. After the generalized BFOS algorithm allocates the given bits to each class, codebooks of each class are also generated using SOFM for the maximal reconstructed image quality. In experimental results using monochromatic images, we obtained a good visual quality in the reconstructed image. Also, PSNR is comparable to that of other classified VQ technique and is higher than that of JPEG baseline system.

  • Considering video copy transform diversity, a multi-feature video copy detection algorithm based on a Speeded-Up Robust Features (SURF) local descriptor is proposed in this paper. Video copy coarse detection is done by an ordinal measure (OM) algorithm after the video is preprocessed. If the matching result is greater than the specified threshold, the video copy fine detection is done based on a SURF descriptor and a box filter is used to extract integral video. In order to improve video copy detection speed, the Hessian matrix trace of the SURF descriptor is used to pre-match, and dimension reduction is done to the traditional SURF feature vector for video matching. Our experimental results indicate that video copy detection precision and recall are greatly improved compared with traditional algorithms, and that our proposed multiple features algorithm has good robustness and discrimination accuracy, as it demonstrated that video detection speed was also improved.

  • In the video retrieval system, visual clues of still images and motion information of video are employed as feature vectors. We generate the temporal textures to express the motion information whose properties are simple expression, easy to compute. We make those temporal textures of wavelet coefficients to express motion information, M components. Then, temporal texture feature vectors are extracted using spatial texture feature vectors, i.e. spatial gray-level dependence. Also, motion amount and motion centroid are computed from temporal textures. Motion trajectories provide the most important information for expressing the motion property. In our modeling system, we can extract the main motion trajectory from the temporal textures.

  • This paper consider's the problem of exploring an unfamiliar environment in search of recognizable objects of visual landmarks. In order to extract and recognize them automatically, a feature map is constructed which records the set of features continually during a learning phase. The map contains photometric geometric, and metric information of each feature. Meanwhile, the localization algorithm can determine the position of the robot by extracting features and matching in the map. These procedures are implemented and tested using an AMR, and preliminary results are presented in this paper.

  • This paper proposes a novel semantic feature detection (SFD) method for real-time image transmission of sign language and finger spelling. We extract semantic information as an interlingua from input text by natural language processing, and then transmit the semantic feature detection, which actually is a parameterized action representation, to the 3-D articulated humanoid models prepared in each client in remote locations. Once the SFD is received, the virtual human will be animated by the synthesized SFD. The experimental results based on Japanese sign langauge and Chinese sign langauge demonstrate that this algorithm is effective in real-time image delivery of sign language and finger spelling.

  • In this paper, we propose an image-based synthesis method that can effectively represent the spark effect in fire simulation. We use the real flame image or animated image as inputs and perform the following steps : 1) extract feature vectors from the image, 2) calculate artificial buoyancy, and 3) generate and advect spark textures. We detect the edge from images and then calculate the feature vectors to calculate the buoyancy. In the next step, we compute the high-quality buoyancy vector field by integrating the two-dimensional feature vector and the fluid equation. Finally, the spark texture is advect by buoyancy field. As a result, our method is performed much faster than the previous approach and high-quality results can be obtained easily and stably.
