New Record of Feather Mite, Neopteronyssus bilineatus Mironov, 2003 (Arachnida: Pteronyssidae), from a Grey-Capped Pygmy Woodpecker, Yungipicus canicapillus in Republic of Korea

  • This study intended to record a species of feather mite, Neopteronyssus bilineatus Mironov, 2003, (Arachnida: Pteronyssidae), from a grey-capped pygmy woodpecker, Yungipicus canicapillus (Blyth, 1845), in the Republic of Korea. Mite samples were collected from the flight feathers of a woodpecker, preserved directly in 95% ethyl alcohol, and then observed by a light microscope after specimen preparation. Morphology of Neopteronyssus bilineatus is distinguished from other pici group species by opisthosoma part with 2 longitudinal bends, tarsal seta rIII 3 times longer than tarsus III in males, and 2 elongated hysteronotal plates extending beyond the level of setae e2 in females. In the present study, a species of feather mite, N. bilineatus, was newly recorded from Y. canicapillus in Korean fauna.

New record of four Korean feather mites (Acari: Sarcoptiformes: Pterolichidae) isolated from the birds in the family Rallidae

  • Four feather mite species, Grallobia fulicae (Trouessart, 1885), Grallobia gallinulae Gaud, 1968, Grallolichus proctogamus (Trouessart, 1885) and Megniniella gallinulae (Buchholz, 1869), previously unrecorded in South Korea are reported. Specimens of Grallobia fulicae and Grallolichus proctogamus were collected from the eurasian coot, Fulica atra in Cheongju-si. Grallobia gallinulae and M. gallinulae were found on the common moorhen, Gallinula chloropus in Yesan-gun. The genera Grallobia Hull, 1934, Grallolichus Gaud, 1960 and Megniniella Gaud, 1958 are new records for South Korea. Here, we provide illustrations and morphological descriptions of these four feather mite species as well as the partial sequences of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) as DNA barcodes.

Three Feather Mites (Acari: Sarcoptiformes) Isolated from Black-Tailed Godwit, Limosa limosa in Korea

  • Feather mites comprise two superfamilies(Analgoidea and Pterolichoidea) and are highly specialized ectosymbionts of birds. To date, this group contains more than 2,500 species worldwide. Fifty-five feather mite species have been reported in Korea, and only one species of genus Alloptes has been recorded from black-tailed godwit Limosa limosa. Three new records of feather mites from the L. limosa in Korea are added in this study: Avenzoaria punctata Gaud, 1972, Bregetovia limosae (Buchholz, 1869), and Montchadskiana buchholzi (Canestrini, 1878). The genus Bregetovia Dubinin, 1951 is also new report for this country. In this paper, we provide the morphological descriptions and illustrations based on the present specimens. Additionally, we determined partial sequences of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I(COI) from three feather mites as DNA barcodes.

A Successful Therapy of Mite Infection with Topical and Spray Application of Ivermectin in Four Pruritic Pigeons (네 마리의 소양감을 보이는 비둘기에서 발생한 진드기 감염(Mite Infection)의 성공적인 Ivermectin 치료 증례)

  • Four pigeons which lived together of same cage were referred due to excessive feather loss, severe itching, and erythema on the head, neck and flank regions. They had behavioral problem with feather bloating and plucking. Although they were mildly depressed, appetite was normal. On microscopic examination of feather picking, prominent external parasite infection was found. Mite infection was diagnosed with morphological confirmation. On analysis of complete blood count (CBC), eosinophilia was evident. The patients were treated with ivermectin (apply 200 mcg/kg topically two times per every other week and spray 200 mcg/ml solution every week). Clinical signs of four, pigeons were improved 45 days following first therapy. This case report indicates that mite infection is accompanied with severe feather loss, itching, and generalized erythema on the skin and behavioral problem with feather bloating and plucking. And this infection can be managed with topical and spray application of Ivermectin without injection.

  • We describe three feather mites recovered from a wood sandpiper Tringa glareola that was stored in a $-20^{\circ}C$ freezer at the Chungnam Wild Animal Rescue Center. These feather mites are reported for the first time in South Korea: Avenzoaria totani (Canestrini, 1978), Ingrassia veligera Oudemans, 1904 and Montchadskiana glareolae Dabert and Ehrnsberger, 1999. In this study, we provide morphological diagnoses and illustrations. Additionally, we provide partial sequences of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I(COI) gene as molecular characteristics of three species.

  • Two feather mites, Brephosceles anatina Dubinin, 1951 (Analgoidea: Alloptidae) and Freyana anatina (Koch, 1844) (Pterolichoidea: Freyanidae), have been reported for the first time from the Eastern Spot-billed Duck, Anas zonorhyncha Swinhoe, 1866 (Anseriformes: Anatidae), in Korea. The genera Brephosceles Hull, 1934 and Freyana Haller, 1877 are new records of Korean fauna. The morphology of B. anatina is distinguished from three species of the lambda species group in having legs IV extending the level of setae e2 with the distal end of the tarsus in males, and the incision on the posterior margin of the hysteronotal shield triangular-shaped and distinctly longer than its greatest width in females. Freyana anatina is distinguished from F. nyrocae and F. obliquasetae in having setae ps1 with a rectangle bend in homeomorphic males, and setae ps1 obliquely ovate and divergent, with the inner canal going obliquely across the membranous part of these setae in females. This study provides morphological redescriptions of both feather mite species supplemented with partial sequences of mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I(COI), based on specimens collected in Korea.

  • Two feather mites, Bychovskiata hypoleuci Mironov and Ddabert, 1997 and Phyllochaeta interifolia (Mégnin and Trouessart, 1884) are reported for the first time in South Korea. Specimens of these two species were collected from the common sandpiper Actitis hypoleucos. The genera Bychovskiata Dubinin, 1951 and Phyllochaeta Dubinin, 1951 are also new reports for South Korea. Here, we provide morphological descriptions and illustrations of these two species. Additionally, we provide partial sequences of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I(COI) as DNA barcodes.

  • Two feather mites, Zachvatkinia larica Mironov, 1989 and Ardeacarus ardeae (Canestrini, 1878) are reported for the first time in Korea. Specimens of Z. larica and A. ardeae were collected from the blacktailed gull Larus crassirostris and little egret Egretta garzetta, respectively. The genera Zachvatkinia Dubinin, 1949 and Ardeacarus Dubinin, 1951 are new to this country. Here, we provided morphological descriptions and illustrations of these two species. Additionally, we provide the partial sequences of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) as DNA barcode markers.

  • Two feather mites, Scutomegninia phalacrocoracis Dubinin and Dubinina, 1940 and Ptiloxenus major ($M{\acute{e}}gnin$ and Trouessart, 1884) are reported for the first time in Korea. Specimens of S. phalacrocoracis and P. major were collected from the great cormorant, Phalacrocorax carbo and great crested grebe, Podiceps cristatus, respectively. The genera Scutomegninia Dubinin, 1951 and Ptiloxenus Hull, 1934 are also new reports for South Korea. Here, we provide morphological descriptions and illustrations of these two species. Additionally, we provide partial sequences of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) as DNA barcodes.

  • Four feather mites, Dichobrephosceles actitidis(Canestrini, 1878)(Alloptidae), Limosilichus limosae Vasyukova and Mironov, 1986, L. numeni Vasyukova and Mironov, 1986 (Syringobiidae), and Pomeranzevia numenii (Canestrini, 1878) (Avenzoariidae), have been reported in Korea for the first time. Specimens of D. actitidis and L. limosae were obtained from the common sandpiper, Actitis hypoleucos (Linnaeus, 1758), and the black-tailed godwit, Limosa limosa (Linnaeus, 1758), respectively, while L. numeni and P. numenii were collected from the Eurasian whimbrel, Numenius phaeopus (Linnaeus, 1766). The genera Dichobrephosceles Peterson and Atyeo, 1968, Limosilichus Vasyukova and Mironov, 1986, and Pomeranzevia Dubinin, 1951 are also new records for the fauna of Korea. This paper provides morphological descriptions, illustrations, and partial sequences of mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I(COI) for all the recorded species based on the specimens collected in Korea.
