  • Flexible assembly line (FAL) is a production system that assembles various parts in unidirectional flow line with many constraints and manufacturing flexibilities. In this research we deal with a FAL balancing problem with the objective of minimizing the maximum workload allocated to the stations. However, almost all the existing researches do not appropriately consider various constraints due to the problem complexity. Therefore, this thesis addresses a balancing problem of FAL with many constraints and manufacturing flexibilities, unlike the previous researches. To solve this problem we use a genetic algorithm (GA). To apply GA to FAL, we suggest a genetic representation suitable for FAL balancing and devise evaluation method for individual's fitness and genetic operators specific to the problem, including efficient repair method for preserving solution feasibility. The experimental results are reported.

  • The introduction of competition in electricity market emphasizes the importance of sufficient transmission capacities to guarantee various electricity transactions. Therefore, when dispatch scheduling, transmission security constraints should be considered for the economic and stable electric power system operation. In this paper, we propose an optimal dispatch scheduling algorithm incorporating transmission security constraints. For solving these constraints, the dispatch scheduling problem is decomposed into a master problem to calculate a general optimal power flow (OPF) without transmission security constraints and several subproblems to inspect the feasibility of OPF solution under various transmission line contingencies. If a dispatch schedule given by the master problem violates transmission security constraints, then an additional constraint is imposed to the master problem. Through these iteration processes between the master problem and subproblems, an optimal dispatch schedule reflecting the post-contingency rescheduling is derived. Moreover, since interruptible loads can positively participate as generators in the competitive electricity market, we consider these interruptible loads active control variables. Numerical example demonstrates efficiency of the proposed algorithm.

  • In this paper, we analyze the applicability of a general optimization algorithm to a database optimization problem. The index selection problem Is the problem to choose a set of indexes for a database in a way that the cost to process queries in the given workload is minimized subject to a given storage space restriction for storing indexes. The problem is well known in database research fields, and many optimization and/or heuristic algorithms have been proposed. Our work differs from previous research in that we formalize the problem in the form of non-linear Integer Programming model, and investigate the feasibility and applicability of a general purpose optimization algorithm, called OPBDP, through experiments. We implemented algorithms to generate workload data sets and problem instances for the experiment. The OPBDP algorithm, which is a non-linear 0-1 Integer Programming problem solver based on Davis-Putnam method, worked generally well for our problem formulation. The experiment result showed various performance characteristics depending on the types of decision variables, variable navigation methods and ocher algorithm parameters, and indicates the need of further study on the exploitation of the general purpose optimization techniques for the optimization problems in database area.

  • This paper presents a preliminary study of introduction of the Dempster-Shafer inexact reasoning method to the expert system for the power system design problem. A brief review of Dempster-Shafer theory of evidence is presented and development of an inference engine adopting the Dempster-Sharer theory is reported. Developed inference engine has a ability of handling both the confirming and disconfirming knowledge represented in the production rule, and has a general purpose application in the design and diagnosis problems. Its applicability has been tested on the problem of the protection scheme selection, one of the typical design problem and we believe, it has shown the feasibility of adoption of the inexact reasoning methodology into the design problem.

  • In parts assignment problem for FMS, both the parts and the tools required to process the parts are assigned to the machine tools for a specified planning period. This is an important decision-making problem for a short-term production planning of FMS. In this paper, parts assignment problem for FMS was analyzed to determine the optimal plan which has the adaptability to production fluctuation. A mathematical model was developed for determing the parts and the tools required for the machine tools which compose FMS, and the model was analyzed to obtain optimal solution. In addition, the vality and feasibility of the computational algorithm was examined by solving a numerical example.

  • In this paper, for constrained optimization problem, one multi-objective optimization algorithm that ensures both performance robustness and constraint feasibility is proposed when uncertainties are involved in design variables. In the proposed algorithm, the gradient index of objective function assisted by design sensitivity with the help of finite element method is applied to evaluate robustness; the reliability calculated by the sensitivity-assisted Monte Carlo simulation method is used to assess the feasibility of constraint function. As a demonstration, the performance and numerical efficiency of the proposed method is investigated through application to the optimal design of TEAM problem 22--a superconducting magnetic energy storage system.

  • At present, in the case of pump fast optimization, there is a problem of rapid, accurate and effective prediction of cavitation performance. In "A Cavitation Performance Prediction Method for Pumps PART1-Proposal and Feasibility" [1], a new cavitation performance prediction method is proposed, and the feasibility of this method is demonstrated in combination with experiments of a mixed flow pump. However, whether this method is applicable to vane pumps with different specific speeds and whether the prediction results of this method are accurate is still worthy of further study. Combined with the experimental results, the research evaluates the sensitivity and accuracy at different flow rates. For a certain operating condition, the method has better sensitivity to different flow rates. This is suitable for multi-parameter multi-objective optimization of pump impeller. For the test mixed flow pump, the method is more accurate when the area ratios are 13.718% and 13.826%. The cavitation vortex flow is obtained through high-speed camera, and the correlation between cavitation flow structure and cavitation performance is established to provide more scientific support for cavitation performance prediction. The method is not only suitable for cavitation performance prediction of the mixed flow pump, but also can be expanded to cavitation performance prediction of blade type hydraulic machinery, which will solve the problem of rapid prediction of hydraulic machinery cavitation performance.

  • Despite the successful launch of Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) 3.0 broadcasting worldwide, broadcasters are facing obstacles in constructing void-less large-scale single-frequency networks (SFNs). The bottleneck is the absence of decent on-channel repeater (OCR) solutions necessary for SFNs. In the real world, OCRs suffer from the maleficent feedback interference (FI) problem, which overwhelms the desired input signal. Moreover, the undesired multipaths between studio-linked transmitters and the OCR deteriorate the forward signals' quality as well. These problems crucially restrict the feasibility of conventional OCR systems, arousing the strong need for cost-worthy advanced OCR solutions. This paper presents an ATSC 3.0-specific solution of advanced OCR that solves the FI problem and refines the input signal. To this end, the FI canceler and channel equalizer functionalities are carefully implemented into the OCR system. The presented OCR system is designed to be fully compliant with the ATSC 3.0 specifications and performs a fast and efficient signal processing by exploiting the specific frame structure. The real product of ATSC 3.0 OCR is fabricated as well, and its feasibility is verified via field and laboratory experiments. The implemented solution is installed at a commercial on-air site and shown to provide substantial coverage gain in practice.

  • Many small vessels such as fishing boats operate in the world's oceans; accordingly, interest in these small vessels' exhaust-gas problem is increasing. Research on the application of electric-propulsion technology has been steadily conducted; however, the subject is limited to research ships or leisure boats, while research on application efficiency remains insufficient. This study attempts to apply lithium-battery electric-propulsion technology to small ships. A gross tonnage of 9.77, a representative fishing boat, is to be redesigned as a fully electrified ship. Without changing the main cabin's dimensions and fuel tanks, the ship's propulsion system is redesigned based on a lithium-battery electric-propulsion system. In addition, the redesigned system is compared with the original sample ship's diesel-propulsion system for application-effect analysis. The results indicate that under controlled sailing conditions, the weight and volume of the electric-propulsion system are 9.5 and 10.5 times those of the diesel-propulsion system, respectively. These values indicate that the system cannot meet fishing boats' high endurance requirements. Therefore, under the existing technical conditions, applying the full lithium-battery electric-propulsion system to solve the problem of high emissions from fishing boats shows limited feasibility.
