The Cretaceous Poongam sedimentary Basin in Kangwon-do, Korea consists alluvial deposits of conglomerates, sandstones, mudstones or siltstones, and volcaniclastics. The Poongam Basin was formed as a fault margin sag or a transpressional basin developed along a strike-slip fault zone, and received huge amount of clastic sediments from the adjacent fault-scaip. It formed an aggrading alluvial fan system and a volcaniclast-supplied marginal lake environment, while tectonic activity and volcanism attenuated toward the end of basin formation. Following the Folk's classification, the sandstones of the Poongam Basin are identified as lithic wackes or feldspathic wackes. The areal and sequential variation of the mineral composition in the sandstones is not distinct. The results of K-Ar age dating from the intruding andesites, volcaniclastics and volcanic fragments in sedimentary rocks show a range of 70 Ma to 84 Ma. It suggests that volcarism occurred sequentially within a relatively short period as the pre-, syn-, and post-depositional events. It was the short period in the late Cretaceous that the basin had evolved i.e., the basin formation, the sediment input and fill, and the , intrusion and extrusion of volcanic rocks occurred. The Poongam sedimentary sequence is a typical tectonic-controlled coarse sedimentary facies which is texturally immature.
A study of anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) was undertaken on Cretaceous granitic, volcanic and sedimentary rocks in the eastern region of the Yangsan fault, southeast Korea. A total of 542 independently oriented core samples collected form 77 sites were studied. The main magnetic mineral in granitic rocks is magnetite according to the magnitude of bulk susceptibility, high-temperature susceptibility variation and isothermal remanent magnetization. Both of magnetic lineation and foliation with NE-SW trends are revealed in the granitic rocks, while volcanic rocks show scattered directions and sedimentary rocks show only load foliation parallel to the bedding planes. The following evidences read to the conclusion that both magnetic fabrics in the granitic rocks have been obtained by a tectonic stress before full solidification of the magma: (i) A fully hardened granitic rocks would get hardly any fabric, (ii) Difference of the magnetic fabric trends with those of the geological structures in the granitic rocks themselves formed by brittle deformation after solidification (e.g. patterns of small-faults and joints), (iii) Kinking of biotite and undulose extinction in quartz observed under the polarizing microscope, (iv) Discordance of magnetic fabrics in the granitic rocks with those in the surrounding rocks. The NE-SW trend of the magnetic foliations suggests a NW-SE compressive stress of nearly contemporaneous with the emplacement of the granitic rocks. The compression should have caused a sinistral strike-slip movement of the Yangsan Fault considering the trend of the latter. As the age of the granitic rocks in the study area is reported to be around $60\sim70$ Ma, it is concluded that the Yangsan fault did the sinistral strike-slip movement during this time (L. Cretaceous Maastrichtian - Cenozoic Paleocene).
The Jangsan Quartzite of the Joseon Supergroup and the foliated granite (so-called granitlc gneiss of presumed Precambrian age) of the Yeongnam massif are in direct contact at Cheondong-ri area, 6 km @SE of Danyang. sllthough it has been thought traditionally that the Jangsan Quartzite overlies unconformably the f&ted granite, it is difficult to interpret the contact as an unconformity smce the basal conglomerate in- the lower part of the Jangsan Quartzite does not have any clast of the foliated granite, Rather, recent structural studies of this area indlcate that the contact is a ductile shear zone. However, the sense and age of the shear movement are still problematic. Our mesoscopic and microscopic studies of &tre Cheondong-11 semi-brittle shear zone involving foliated cataclasite and phyllonite, which is a pa& of the Ogdong fault, indlcate a top-to-the northeast shearing, i.e., dextral strike slip. We also performed Pb-Pb dating for the age-unknown foliated granite, since the age of deformed granite ccarr emtrain the maximum age of deformation. The whole rock and feldspar Pb isotape data for the foliated granite and a micaceous xenolith define an isoc chron age of $2.16{\pm}0.15$ Ga ($2{\sigma}$;MSWD=4.4) which is interpreted as the emplacement age of the granite. This early Proterozoic age agrees with those of Precambrian igneous activity In the Yeongnam massif reported previously. The obtaiPrfid gge confirms the traditional idea about the age of the foliated granite and indicates that other methd(s) should be employed to constrain the age of the shear movement.
We determined SHRIMP U-Pb ages of the detrital zircons separated from the Bangnim Group of the Pyeongchang area to constrain its depositional age. As the result, the minimum age group yielded $^{206}Pb/^{238}U$ age of $450.3{\pm}4.2Ma$ (n=3), suggesting depositional age younger than Late Ordovician. Therefore, the Bangnim Group cannot be a Precambrian sedimentary formation but is younger than Myobong Formation of the Early Paleozoic Joseon Supergroup of the Taebaeksan basin. Such a depositional age implies that the Bangnim Group and structurally overlying Jangsan Quartzite should be in fault contact, suggesting that the Jangsan Quartzite, Myobong Formation and Pungchon Limestone thrusted over the Bangnim Group. The zircon U-Pb age distribution pattern of the Bangnim Group resembles those of the Early Paleozoic Myobong and Sambangsan Formations of the Taebaeksan basin and seemingly Middle Paleozoic Daehyangsan Quartzite and the Taean Formation. However, detrital zircon U-Pb age patterns of the Late Paleozoic Pyeongan Supergroup are quite distinct from them, suggesting drastic change in provenance of the detrital zircon supply. Therefore, we suggest that the Bangnim Group was deposited before the Pyeongan Supergroup.
Pseudotachylytes, produced by frictional heating during seismic slip, provide information that is critical to understanding the physics of earthquakes. We report the results of occurrence, structural characteristics, scanning electron microscopic observation and geochemical analysis of pseudotachylytes, which is presumed to have formed after the Late Cretaceous in outcrops of the Paleoproterozoic granitic gneiss on the Bulil waterfall of the Jirisan area, Yeongnam massif, Korea. Fault rocks, which are the products of brittle deformation under the same shear stress regime in the study area, are classified as pseudotachylyte and foliated cataclasite. The occurrences of pseudotachylyte identified on the basis of thickness and morphology are fault vein-type and injection vein-type pseudotachylyte. A number of fault vein-type pseudotachylytes occur as thin (as thick as 2 cm) layers generated on the fault plane, and are cutting general foliation and sheared foliation developed in granitic gneiss. Smaller injection vein-type pseudotachylytes are found along the fault vein-type pseudotachylytes, and appear in a variety of shapes based on field occurrence and vein geometry. At a first glance fault vein-type seudotachylyte looks like a mafic vein, but it has a chemical composition almost identical to the wall rock of granitic gneiss. Also, it has many subrounded clasts which consist predominantly of quartz, feldspar, biotite and secondary minerals including clay minerals, calcite and glassy materials. Embayed clasts, phenocryst with reaction rim, oxide droplets, amygdules, and flow structures are also observed. All of these evidences indicate the pseudotachylyte formed due to frictional melting of the wall rock minerals during fault slip related to strong seismic faulting events in the shallow depth of low temperature-low pressure. Further studies will be conducted to determine the age and mechanical aspect of the pseudotachylyte formation.
We report $^{230}Th/^{234}U$ disequilibrium ages of fracture-filling carbonate veins from the Ipsil and Janghangri fault zones, Gyeongju, Korea by multiple collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The U and Th fraction was extracted from totally dissolved samples by rapid and convenient coprecipitation and ion exchange chemistry. The recovery was around 80% for Th and 70% for U. The $^{234}U/^{238}U,\;^{230}Th/^{232}Th$ ratios were analysed for this preconcentrated fraction and the U/Th ratio was directly analysed for untreated sample solution. The $^{234}U-^{230}Th$ system is in secular equilibrium for the Ipsil carbonate samples, supporting previously reported ESR ages. The detrital-corrected $^{230}Th/^{234}U$ age of the Janghangri carbonate samples is $48\pm$41 ka, which constrains the minimum age of the fracture zone.
The geological structures and some of the stratigraphy in the area studied are being thought to be ambiguous and controvertible. The present study intended to clarify these ambiguities by correct interpretation of the geological structures and lithostratigraphy of the area concerned. The so-called "Sambangsan formation", which was designated as an unknown age by the Taebaksan Geological Investigation Corps (1962) and as the mid Cambrian age by T. Kobayashi (1966) and I.S. Kim (1983), has been determined by the present study as the $Hongj{\breve{o}}m$ series of Carbo-Permian age resting unconformably on the Cambro-Ordovician limestone formations. This determination was supported by conodont study concurrently carried out by I.S.Kim. The so-called "Daehari formation", which was renamed by the later study group after the original "Sambangsan formation" distributed in the area from southwest of Sambangsan toward southwest to $Juch{\breve{o}}n$, possesses more or less the same lithlogy as "Sambangsan formation" of the old designation in the eastern of the area, but different lithology in the western localities where Sadong formation, the basal sandstone member of the Kobangsan formation and the green shale member of the Nokam formation are cropped out. The narrow belt of the complex mixture of the $Py{\breve{o}}ngan$ group in-between limestone formations extending over 16km with a width of 500m to 1000m was formed by the faults: the northern boundary with the limestone formations is a fault contact all the way through entire area and the southern boundary is either fault contact in most of the area and unconformity in some other area. The $Hongj{\breve{o}}m$ formation on the Mt. Sambangsan shows rather steeply dipping nearly isoclinal folds which plunges $10^{\circ}$ to $20^{\circ}$ southward. There are also field evidences that the limestone formations distributed in both north and south of the Hongjom formation (erstwhile "Sambangsan formation") along the Sambangsan ridge are the same formations and show the same folding as the $Hongj{\breve{o}}m$ formation. Therefore, these limestone formations should be rezoned in the light of the new structural interpretation although they were differently designated in the previous studies as $Py{\breve{o}}ngchang$ and $Y{\breve{o}}ngw{\breve{o}}l$-type of the Joson Group. The structures developed in the area mostly faults, which acted as one of the guides for the new interpretation of the geology and structure of the area are described and shown on the geologic map.
The study area, Bonggil-ri, Gyeongju, SE Korea, is composed of Cretaceous sedimentary rocks, and Tertiary igneous rocks and dykes. A research on fracture developing history and density distribution was carried out on well exposed Tertiary granites. The fractures developed in this area have the following sequence; NW-SE trending duo-tile shear bands (set a), NNW-SSE trending extensional fractures (set d), WNW-ESE trending extensional or normal fractures (set b), NE-SW trending right-lateral fractures (set c), WNW-ESE trending reverse fault reactivated from normal faults (set e) and NW-SE trending left-lateral faults reactivated from shear bands (set a) under brittle condition. According to the result of fracture density analysis, the fracture density in this area depends on rock property rather than rock age, and also higher fracture density is observed around fault damage zones. However, this high fracture density may also be related to the cooling process associated with dyke intrusion as well as rock types and fault movement. Regardless of the reason of the high fracture density, high fracture density itself contributes to fluid flow and migration of chemical elements.
This paper presents application of RCM(Reliability Centered Maintenance) in waterworks system. The reliability-based probability model for predicting the failure probability is established and FTA(Fault Tree Analysis) is proposed to considering RCM. To calculate failure probability, Weibull distribution is usually used due to age related reliability. FTA is an engineering analysis which is using logic symbols. The real historical data of CMMS(Computerized Maintenance Management System) make full use of case study for waterworks system. Consequently, the RCM would be likely to permit utilities to reduce overall costs in maintenance and improve the total benefit.
The Chungnam basin is a crucial area for studying the Mesozoic crustal evolutionary history of the Korean Peninsula. This study reports the revised geology and new isotopic ages from the northeastern Chungnam Basin based on detailed geological mapping and LA-ICP-MS zircon U-Pb analysis. Our renewed geologic map defines intra-basin, basin-bounding, and basement fault systems closely related to hydrothermal gold-bearing quartz vein injections. Here, we propose the directions of (micro)structural and geochronological future work to address issues on the relationship between the tectonic process, basin evolution, and hydrothermal fluid migration in the southwestern Korean Peninsula.
