This is a study of fatigue strength of weld deposits with transverse cracks in plate up to 50 mm thick. It is concerned with the fatigue properties of welds already with transverse cracks. A previous study of transverse crack occurrence, location and microstructure in accordance with welding conditions was published in the Welding Journal (Lee et al., 1998). A fatigue crack develops as a result of stress concentration and extends with each load cycle until fatigue occurs, or until the cyclic loads are transferred to redundant members. The fatigue performance of a member is more dependent on the localized state of stress than the static strength of the base metal or the weld metal. Fatigue specimens were machined to have transverse cracks located on the surface and inside the specimen. Evaluation of fatigue strength depending on location of transverse cracks was then performed. When transverse cracks were propagated in a quarter-or half-circle shape, the specimen broke at low cycle in the presence of a surface crack. However, when the crack was inside the specimen, it propagated in a circular or elliptical shape and the specimen showed high fatigue strength, enough to reach the fatigue limit within tolerance of design stresses.

Fatigue crack growth and life have been estimated based on established empirical equations. In this paper, an alternative method using artificial neural network (ANN) -based model developed to predict fatigue damages simultaneously. To learn and generalize the ANN, fatigue crack growth rate and life data were built up using in-plane bending fatigue test results. Single fracture mechanical parameter or nondestructive parameter can't predict fatigue damage accurately but multiple fracture mechanical parameters or nondestructive parameters can. Existing fatigue damage modeling used this merit but limited real-time damage monitoring. Therefore, this study shows fatigue damage model using backpropagation neural networks on the basis of X -ray half breadth ratio B / $B_o$, fractal dimension $D_f$ and fracture mechanical parameters can estimate fatigue crack growth rate da/ dN and cycle ratio N / $N_f$ at the same time within engineering limit error ($5\%$).

The rotating bending fatigue tests were performed using the specimens taken from Cr-Mo-V steel, widely sued in thermal power plant turbines, at various temperatures such as room temperature, 300 .deg. C, 425 .deg. C and 550 .deg. C. The characteristics of fatigue crack propagation were examined and analyzed by using fracture mechanics parameter. The plastic replica method was also applied in order to measure the crack length on the basis of serial observation of fatigue crack propagation behavior on the defected specimen surface. The fatigue crack propagation behavior of Cr-Mo-V steel was investigated within the frame work of elastic-plastic fracture mechanics. The propagation law of fatigue crack is obtained uniquely by using the term .sigma. $^{n}$ sub a/where .sigma. $_{a}$ is the service stress, a is the crack length and n is a constant. The values of constant n are nearly equal to 2.48, 2.60 and 8.61 at room temperature, 300 .deg. C and 425 .deg. C.
Uniaxial and biaxial torsional fatigue tests were conducted on the samples extracted from urban railway wheel steel. Ultimate and yield strengths of the steel were 1027.7 MPa and 626 MPa, respectively. The uniaxial fatigue limit was 422.5 MPa, corresponding 67% of the ultimate tensile strength. The ratio of ${\tau}_e/{\sigma}_e$ was 0.63. Fatigue strength coefficient and exponent were 1319.5 MPa and 0.339, respectively. Maximum principal and equivalent strain were found to be adequate parameter to predict fatigue lifetime of the steel under multiaixal fatigue condition.

The fatigue characteristics of Si-Mn spring steel (AISI 9260-H, JIS SUP-6) were investigated on several heat treatment conditions. Repeated impact loads of 10kg-cm and 15kg-cm energy were applied with a cam roller drop hammer type impact fatigue testing machine. Specimens were oil-quenched, and tempered at 350.deg. C, 450.deg. C and 500.deg. C, respectively. Results obtained in these experiments are summarized as follows.; 1) The fatigue life of the specimen is decreased as the magnitude of constant impact energy is increased, regardless of heat treatment. 2) Generally, the fatigue life of the specimen is decreased as the tensile strength of the materials is increased. 3) Within the limit of these experiments, the fatigue life showed abrupt decrease at the tempering temperature of about 400.deg. C 4) The fatigue life is increased as the initial value of applied stress intensity factor(K$_{1}$) is decreased. This tendency is apparent for the low tensile strength materials.
Not only difference of fatigue crack growth and propagation behavior resulted from the grain size, the hardness ratio and volume fraction in M.E.F. dual phase steel composed of martensite in hard phase and ferrite in soft phase, but also the effects of the plastic constraint were investigated by fracture mechanics and microstructural method. The main results obtained are as follows: 1) The fatigue endurance of M.E.F. steel increases with decreasing the grain size, increasing the ratio of hardness and volume fraction. 2) The initiation of slip and crack occures faster as the stress level goes higher. These phenomena result from the plastic constraint effect of the second phase. 3) The crack propagation rate in the constant stress level is faster as the grain size gets larger, the ratio of hardness lower and volume fraction smaller.
Fatigue strength evaluation was carried out for the core support structure of a low voltage circuit breaker. The impact load acting on the core support was calculated based on the strains measured during operation. A three-dimensional finite element analysis was performed to determine local peak stresses for fatigue evaluation. Fatigue safety factors were calculated using the modified Goodman, Gerber, Soderberg, and modified Findley lines, considering the magnitude of the residual stress and impact load.
This study is test for STS304 specimen using bending and torsion state. Rounded specimen and notched specimen including fracture surface investigation was comparatively experimented, fatigue life according to degree of surface finishing was examined. Fatigue fracture probability of notched canilever specimens were predicted by P-S-N curve, median rank and Weibull distribution. And at the relation with the rotational speed and stress, the fatigue life of the test specimen was higher at high speed than low speed If summarize STS304 torsion result of fatigue test, is as following. Fatigue life prediction was available by Weibull statistics distribution, and 50% breakdown probability correlation equation was appeared as following.
Ultrasonic method using SH(shear horizontal) wave has been developed to determine the surface damage in fatigued material. Fatigue damages based on propagation energy were analyzed by multiregression analysis and phase measurement in interrupted fatigue test specimen including CrMoV and 12Cr alloy steel. From the test results, as the fatigue damage increased the propagation time of the launched waves increased and amplitude of wavelet decreased. Also, analysis for the waveform modulation showed a reliable estimation, with confidence limit of 97% for 12Cr steel and 95% for CrMoV steel, respectively. Therefore, It is thought that SH ultrasonic wave technique can be applied to determine fatigue damage of in-service component nondestructively.

Recently, with the high performance and efficiency of machine, there have been required the multi-functions in various machine parts, such as the heat resistance, the abrasion resistance and the stress resistance as well as the strength. Fatigue crack growth tests were carried out to investigate the fatigue characteristics of high carbon steel (SM53C) experienced by high-frequency induction treatment. The influence of high-frequency induction treatment on fatigue limit was experimentally examined with the specialfocus on the variation of surface microstructure and the fatigue crack initiation and propagation through fractography. Also, the shape of hardening depth, hardened structure, hardness, and fatigue-fracture characteristics of SM53C composed by carbon steel are also investigated.
