탄소섬유/에폭시 복합재로 보수된 알루미늄의 피로특성에 대한 연구 -알루미늄 표면처리 효과 (A Study on the fatigue Behavior of Aluminum Repaired by Graphite/Epoxy Composite - Pretreatment Effect of Aluminum)

  • For a present study, we investigated fatigue behavior of cracked aluminum repaired by unidirectional graphite/epoxy composite material. Three different specimens were used in the fatigue tests: cracked aluminum, cracked aluminum repaired by graphite/epoxy composite patch, and plasma-treated aluminum repaired by graphite/epoxy composite patch. The surface of the aluminum was treated using a DC plasma. The results showed that the fatigue crack growth behavior of cracked aluminum was significantly improved by repairing the cracked area with a composite patch. Specifically, the specimen repaired by composite patch showed about 300% more fatigue lift than the cracked aluminum. In particular, the plasma-treated aluminum repaired by composite patch showed almost 12 % more fatigue life than the cracked aluminum repaired by graphite/epoxy composite patch. The increased fatigue life of plasma-treated case was attributed to the surface roughness of aluminum by plasma treatment.

  • A new non-destructive fatigue prediction model of the composite laminates is developed. The natural frequencies of fatigue-damaged laminates under extensional loading are related to the fatigue lift of the laminates by establishing the equivalent flexural stiffness reduction as a function of the elastic properties of sublaminates. The flexural stiffness is derived by relating the $90^{\circ}$-ply elastic modulus reduction, and using the laminate plate theory to the degraded elastic modulus and the intact elastic modulus of other laminate. The natural frequency reduction model, in which the dominant fatigue mode can be identified from the sensitivity scale factors of sublaminate elastic properties, provides natural frequency vs. fatigue cycle curves for the composite laminates. Vibration tests were also conducted on $[\textrm{90}_{2}\textrm{0}_{2}]_s$ carbon/epoxy laminates to verify the natural frequency reduction model. Correlations between the predictions of the model and experimental results are good.

  • In this study, a series of fatigue test was performed to evaluate the fatigue strength of butt welded specimens. Effective notch stress through finite element analysis was conducted to analyze the fatigue results. As a results, no significant decrease in fatigue strength was observed when backplates were present. The S-N curve that based on effective notch stress appeared a similar fatigue lift to FAT 225 curve without reference to existence of backplates.

  • This paper is a study on the fatigue analysis using BS5400 Part10(1980), code of practice for fatigue for a double link type level luffing jib crane which has been operated since the crane was built in 1985 at a domestic pier. South Korea. In addition, on the basis of the design lift due to fatigue analysis and the number of cracks detected from the nondestructive test the structural reliability and the residual life of the crane is predicted by evaluating the expected development of detectable fatigue oracle during the next five to ten years using Paris's Law for predicting fatigue crack growth and Gaussian probability density function to be reasonable for stress ranges below the mean values determined by laboratory tests. The statistical data used for the analysis of the structural reliability and life expectancy is given in the above referred code.

  • A district heating(DH) system supplies environmentally-friend heat and is appropriate for reduction of energy consumption and/or air pollutions. The DH transmission pipe, composed of supply and return pipes, has been used to transmit the heat and prevent heat loss during transportation. The two types of pipes are operated at a temperature of $75\~115^{\circ}C\;and\;40\~65^{\circ}C$, respectively, with an operating pressure of less than 1.568MPa. The objectives of this paper are to systematize data processing of transition temperature and investigate its effects on fatigue life of DH pipes. For the sake of this, about 5 millions temperature data were measured during one year at ten locations, and then available fatigue lift estimation schemes were examined and applied to quantify the specific thermal fatigue life of each pipe. As a result, a relational database management system as well as reliable fatigue lift evaluation procedures is established for Korean DH pipes. Also, since the prototypal evaluation results satisfied both cycle-based and stress-based fatigue criteria, those can be used as useful information in the future fer optimal design, operation and energy saving via setting of efficient condition and stabilization of water temperature.

  • An investigation was made on the fatigue characteristics of type 304 stainless steel membrane manufactured by plastic working. To investigate the effect of plastic deformation, tests were performed with 5 types of specimens having different amount of plastic deformation. Fatigue tests were executed under both room and LNG temperatures ($-162^{\circ}C$). All the test results were compared with the fatigue data provided by RPIS(Recommended Practice for Inground LNG Storage Tank). On the basis of these results, it was confirmed that RPIS's design fatigue curve could be applied to evaluate fatigue lift of KOGAS membrane manufactured by pressing.

  • The Objective of this work was to design Surface Antenna Structure (SAS) and investigate fatigue behavior of SAS that was asymmetric sandwich structure. This term, SAS, indicates that structural surface becomes antenna. Constituent materials were selected considering electrical properties, dielectric constant and tangent loss as well as mechanical properties. For the antenna performance, SSFIP elements inserted into structural layers were designed for satellite communication at a resonant frequency of 12.5 GHz and final demonstration article was 16${\times}$8 array antenna. From electrical measurements, it was shown that antenna performances were in good agreement with design requirements. In cyclic 4-point bending, flexure behavior was investigated by static and fatigue test. Fatigue lift curve of SAS was obtained. The fatigue load was determined experimentally at a 0.75(1.875kN) load level. SAS concept is the first serious attempt at integration for both antenna and composite engineers and promises innovative future communication technology.

  • This study investigates the effects of the material properties and the fatigue behavior in the SM490A material specimens due to the low-temperature atmosphere. In the fatigue behavior, the low-temperature affects the fatigue life. As the temperature get low, the fatigue limit increase, also As the yield strength and the tensile strength increase, the impact absorbed energy decrease. The difference of fatigue lift represents to normal distribution and it is larger between the room temperature and the low temperature, but in the result of the cumulative density function, the effect of temperature is not too large on it.

용접 비드 형상을 이용한 용접 시편의 피로수명 예측 연구 (A Study on the Fatigue Life Estimation Using Butt Weld Bead Profiles)

  • This study investigates the fatigue lift estimation of butt weld specimen for the railway vehicle by examining butt weld bead profiles. The butt weld beads, which are welded by semi-robot method, have non-uniform bead profiles described by $\theta$, p and h. The stress concentration factors, K$\_$t/, are changed by different $\theta$, p and h from 1.395 to 2.863. Hence, the sensitivity of K$\_$k/ is changed by each $\theta$, p and h. As $\theta$ becomes lower and p and h become higher, K$\_$t/ increases. The fatigue life can be estimated very closely for the AAY specimens without residual stress using only butt weld bead profiles. But, for the AAN specimens with residual stress, the fatigue life must be estimated by considering both the weld bead profiles and the residual stress data.

  • Recently, Self Piercing Rivet(SPR) has been spotlighted in the automotive industry as a substitutive resort of spot welding and has also been watched by the designer as lightening a car body due to their superior assembly processes. Fatigue behavior of SPR joint needs to be investigated experimentally and numerically to predict its structural stiffness and fatigue life. Testing of lap-shear specimens with various material combinations is performed to obtain the joining strength and the fatigue life of SPR connections. The simulation of SPR lap-shear specimens is also conducted to obtain the structural stiffness of SPR connections under different material combinations. A Finite element model of the SPR lap-shear specimen is developed using a FEMFAT SPR pre-processor. The fatigue lift of SPR specimen is predicted using a FEMFAT 4.4e based on the liner finite element analysis.
