Tethers of Tension Leg Platform (TLP) are a series structural system where fatigue is the principal mode of failure. The present study is devoted to the fatigue and fatigue fracture reliability study of these tethers. For this purpose, two limit state functions have been derived. These limit state functions are based on S-N curve and fracture mechanics approaches. A detailed methodology for the reliability analysis has then been presented. A sensitivity analysis has been carried out to study the influence of various random variables on tether reliability. The design point, important for probabilistic design, is located on the failure surface. Effect of wind, water depth, service life and number of welded joints are investigated. The effect of uncertainties in various random variables on tether fatigue reliability is highlighted.
An investigation was made on the fatigue characteristics of type 304 stainless steel membrane manufactured by plastic working. To investigate the effect of plastic deformation, tests were performed with 5 types of specimens having different amount of plastic deformation. Fatigue tests were executed under both room and LNG temperatures ($-162^{\circ}C$). All the test results were compared with the fatigue data provided by RPIS(Recommended Practice for Inground LNG Storage Tank). On the basis of these results, it was confirmed that RPIS's design fatigue curve could be applied to evaluate fatigue lift of KOGAS membrane manufactured by pressing.
The Objective of this work was to design Surface Antenna Structure (SAS) and investigate fatigue behavior of SAS that was asymmetric sandwich structure. This term, SAS, indicates that structural surface becomes antenna. Constituent materials were selected considering electrical properties, dielectric constant and tangent loss as well as mechanical properties. For the antenna performance, SSFIP elements inserted into structural layers were designed for satellite communication at a resonant frequency of 12.5 GHz and final demonstration article was $16\;{\times}\;8$ array antenna. From electrical measurements, it was shown that antenna performances were in good agreement with design requirements. In cyclic 4-point bending, flexure behavior was investigated by static and fatigue test. Fatigue life curve of SAS was obtained. The fatigue load was determined experimentally at a 0.75(1.875kN) load level. SAS concept is the first serious attempt at integration for both antenna and composite engineers and promises innovative future communication technology.

Although the transverse butt weld method with ceramic backing strip has been widely used in various industrial fields for its fabricational convenience, it is rarely used in offshore industries since the fatigue strength of the weld joint has not been proved sufficiently. This study conducted fatigue tests for series of butt weld specimens with horizontal (2G) and vertical (3G) welding positions in order to verify the fatigue strength compared to S-N curve by DNV (Det Norske Veritas), IIW (International Institute of Welding) and Eurocode 3. The difference of the 2G specimens and the 3G specimens are investigated in terms of angular distortion and the effect on the fatigue strength are analyzed.
Recently structural damage has been frequently observed in reinforced concrete brdiges due to repeated loads such as vehicular traffic an due to continual overloads by heavy duty trucks. Therefore, the purpose of this experimental stduy is to investigate the damage mechanism due to fatigue behavior of high-strength reinforced concrete beams under repeated loads. From the test results, the relation of cycle loading to deflection is on the mid-span , the crack growth and the modes of failure according to cycle number, fatigue life and S-N curve were observed through the fatigue test. Based on the fatigue test results , high-strength reinforced concrete beams failed to 57 ∼66 percent of the static ultimate strength . Fatigue strength aobut two million cycles from S-N curves was certified by 60 percent of static ultimate strength.
Under cyclic loading, the fatigue failures of welded joints occur at weld toes which induce stress concentration by weld shape. So we need to obtain the peak stress and the S-N curve to assess the fatigue strength of welded joints. However the measurement of peak stress is of high uncertainty and low reproducibility, so we use nominal stress instead in fatigue tests of welded joints. In this study, fatigue tests to obtain S-N curves and FE analyses to obtain stress concentration factors were conducted for the two types of cruciform fillet welded joints, that is, load-carrying and non load-carrying types. Then we changed the obtained S-N curves to that based on peak stress using the hot-spot stress concept. From the analyses of the S-N curves obtained, we have concluded that there is a need to develop a new method to evaluate the fatigue life.
The vertical roller mill, which performs the grinding and partly blending of raw material, is the one of the important machine to produce ordinary portland cement. It has been reported that an unexpected fatigue failure occurred in a table liner in the course of grinding portland cement. The life of table liner is estimated to $4{\times}10^7$ cycles in the design stage, but at the field, when its operating time reaches to $2{\times}10^6{\sim}8{\times}10^6$ cycles, the fracture of table liner begins to be found. The fracture of table liner is initiated from the outside edge of grinding path contacting with the grinding roller. Its maintenance normally take 30 % of the total maintenance costs of the roller mill. Therefore, this study shows the clarification of the reasons occurring the fatal destruction of the table liner by fatigue fracture analysis utilizing fracture mechanics and by the finite element method. And, the results from Goodman diagram illustrate relationship of including information on the transition between tensile and bending fatigue strength in the fatigue characterization of table liner.
As an LNG carrier preserves and transports liquefied natural gas under minus $163^{\circ}C$, the cargo tank has to have sufficient hull strength against not only the wave loads but also against loads caused by loading and unloading and thermal expansion to keep the LNG safely. The main insulation types for a CCS are No.96 and Mark III from GTT for the membrane LNG carrier. Particularly, the invar membrane plate in No.96 is very thin and its connections could experience high local stresses owing to such dynamic loads. Therefore, it should be verified whether those connections have sufficient fatigue lives for the purpose of operation and maintenance. This research aims at performing fatigue analysis with 0.1 fatigue damage criteria for 40 years of design life to support new membrane CCS development using proper S-N curves and the associated finite element modeling technique for each connection and then propose a reasonable design methodology.
The demand of high cycle fatigue behavior on plate material is increasing because of its various applications. However, the high-cycle fatigue life data of the plate material is very rare compared to the rod material. Thus, in this study, a plate specimen is designed for the ultrasonic fatigue test because it is time efficient as compared to the conventional fatigue test. To apply the ultrasonic fatigue test, the specimen design is required to resonate at 20 kHz. Therefore, the dynamic elastic modulus was determined by measuring the resonance frequency with a piezoelectric element and laser doppler vibrometer (LDV). As a result, the plate specimen is designed and demonstrated using the ultrasonic fatigue testing machine. The ultrasonic fatigue test results were compared with the hydraulic fatigue test results.
