SCM 420강의 프레팅 피로 특성에 관한 연구 (A Study on Fretting Fatigue Characteristic of SCM 420 Steel)

  • Fretting fatigue behavior of SCM420 steel commonly used in the automotive industry for structural applications was investigated in this study. In addition, the effect of bridge pad on the fretting fatigue test was evaluated from different pad materials and following conclusions were drawn. Simple fatigue limit of SCM 420 steel was determined to be 350 MPa while this value was 225 MPa and 285.5 MPa with SCM420H and with SM45C pad, respectively. Reduction in fatigue limit was, thus found to be 35.7% and 17.9% with SCM 420H pad and SM45C pad, respectively. Results of fracture surface observation revealed that typical striation pattern of fatigue failure existed as well as dimpled and cleavage frature appearance was found in final fractured region. From the EDS compositional analysis, test sample and pad part all had high signals for oxygen and iron, suggesting that worn particles might be iron oxide, although exact chemical composition has to be confirmed. Considerable reduction in fatigue life was apparent in SCM 420 steel under fretting fatigue against simple fatigue. Such reduced fatigue life by fretting damage should be considered as an important factor not only in the viewpoint of repairing but also inevitably in the design stage of structural components.

실물 휨 피로시험을 통한 철도레일의 휨 피로거동 분석 (The Bending Fatigue Behavior Analysis of Rail by Bending Fatigue Test)

  • 철도 레일의 누적통과톤수에 의한 교체주기기준은 레일의 휨 피로수명에 의해 결정된다. 레일의 휨 피로수명을 평가하기 위해서는 기본적으로 레일의 휨 피로거동(S-N선도)에 대한 분석이 필요하다. 본 연구에서는 국내에서 사용되고 있는 50kg/m, 60kg/m 레일에 대하여 신품 및 사용 용접레일(모재부, 테르밋용접부, 가스압접부)로 구분하여 실물 휨 피로시험을 수행하였으며, 휨 피로시험결과를 바탕으로 파단유형 및 파단면 분석, 파괴 확률에 따른 휨 피로거동(S-N선도) 분석을 수행하였다. 이를 통해 레일종류별, 용접방법별, 신품 및 사용레일에 대한 S-N선도를 도출하였다. 이는 향후 누적통과톤수에 의한 레일 피로수명 평가를 위해 반드시 필요한 기초 자료로서 활용될 것으로 기대된다.

무한 평면체에 존재하는 복수 표면균열의 성장에 대한 수명예측용 시뮬레이션 개발에 관한 연구 (A Program Development of Life Prediction Simulation for Multi-Surface Cracks on the Finite Plate)

  • The social demand urges us to use some equipments and structures in high temperature environment. By this occasion, the necessity of studying the fatigue crack growth is an important aspect of new materials. However, the present situation is rarely to accumulate the fatigue data. Especially, 1Cr-1Mo-0.25V steel and 304 stainless steel have been increased to be used under the severe condition of high temperature. And so, the fatigue estimation of those materials is important and appropriate. Fatigue tests have been carried out to examine the crack initiation, growth behaviour for the small fatigue crack of 1Cr-1Mo-0.25V steel and 304 stainless steel at room temperature and 538^{\circ}C$. The remote measurement system which has many merits of checking and saving the image for detailed examination was applied to closely detect the crack length. Generally, the fatigue crack initiated in the form of multiple cracks and grew each other. And then it coalesced to become a major crack. The major crack governed the rest of the fatigue life. In the growing process, each peripheral cracks interact and grow for a certain period. After then, it coalesced and fractured. On the basis of the above experimental data for the small crack, a simulation program was developed to predict the residual life time and to estimate the integrity of machine elements and structures. At the same time, the simulation was extended to 1Cr-1Mo-0.25V steel. The simulation results have shown a good agreement to those of the experimental ones for both materials of 1Cr-1Mo-0.25V steel and 304 stainless steel with small cracks. The NASCRAC has applied to compare the fatigue life with the experimental results. And so, it can be said that the simulation program is valuable tools to the industrial fields.

Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopic investigation of a fractured non-submerged dental implant associated with abutment fracture

  • The biocompatibility and durability of implant fixtures are major concerns for dentists and patients. Mechanical complications of the implant include abutment screw loosening, screw fracture, loss of implant prostheses, and implant fracture. This case report aims to describe management of a case of fixture damage that occurred after screw fracture in a tissue level, internal connection implant and microscopic evaluation of the fractured fixture. A trephine bur was used to remove the fixture, and the socket was grafted using allogeneic bone material. The failed implant was examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), which revealed a fractured fixture with both normal and irregular bone patterns. The SEM and EDS results give an enlightenment of the failed fixture surface micromorphology with microfracture and contaminated chemical compositions. Noticeably, the significantly high level of gold (Au) on the implant surface and the trace amounts of Au and titanium (Ti) in the bone tissue were recorded, which might have resulted from instability and micro-movement of the implant-abutment connection over an extended period of time. Further study with larger number of patient and different types of implants is needed for further conclusion.

Comparison of the cyclic fatigue resistance of One Curve, F6 Skytaper, Protaper Next, and Hyflex CM endodontic files

  • Objectives: This study compared the cyclic fatigue resistance of One Curve (C wire) and F6 Skytaper (conventional austenite nickel-titanium [NiTi]), and 2 instruments with thermos-mechanically treated NiTi: Protaper Next X2 (M wire) and Hyflex CM (CM wire). Materials and Methods: Ten new instruments of each group (size: 0.25 mm, 6% taper in the 3 mm tip region) were tested using a rotary bending machine with a 60° curvature angle and a 5 mm curvature radius, at room temperature. The number of cycles until fracture was recorded. The length of the fractured instruments was measured. The fracture surface of each fragment was examined with a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The data were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance and the post hoc Tukey test. The significance level was set at 0.05. Results: At 60°, One Curve, F6 Skytaper and Hyflex CM had significantly longer fatigue lives than Protaper Next X2 (p < 0.05). No statistically significant differences were found in the cyclic fatigue lives of One Curve, F6 Skytaper, and Hyflex CM (p > 0.05). SEM images of the fracture surfaces of the different instruments showed typical features of fatigue failure. Conclusions: Within the conditions of this study, at 60° and with a 5 mm curvature radius, the cyclic fatigue life of One Curve was not significantly different from those of F6 Skytaper and Hyflex CM. The cyclic fatigue lives of these 3 instruments were statistically significantly longer than that of Protaper Next.

고장력 Cr-Mo강의 질화처리에 따른 피로특성 (Effect of Nitriding on Fatigue Characteristics of Cr-Mo Alloy Steel)

  • 고장력 Cr-Mo강은 이온질화와 연질화 두가지 질화처리를 수행하였다. 각 질화처리의 특징을 비교하기 위해서 30분의 공정시간을 가지고 질화처리를 하였다. 표면강도의 변화를 비교하기 위해서 비커스 경도 시험이 수행되었으며 피로시험은 켄틸레버 회전굽힘 피로시험기(Yamamoto, YRB 200)를 이용하여 수행되었다. 초고주기영역($N>10^7cycle$)의 특징을 알아보기 위해서 피로시험은 피로한도 이후까지 진행하였다. 피로 시험 후 주사전자현미경(SEM)을 이용해서 파단면을 분석하였으며 고주기영역과 초고주기 영역의 파괴기구를 관찰하였다.

  • 본 연구에서는 비파괴방법중 대단히 효과적인 방법이라 할 수 있는 X선 프렉토그래피 방법을 이용하여 파괴역학적 파라메타인 ${\Delta}K$, $K_{max}$의 정량적인 평가의 가능성에 대하여 검토하였다. 이를 위하여 A12009-15v/o $SiC_w$ 복합재료와 SS41 불림재를 이용하여 피로균열진전시험을 실시하고 그 결과로부터 파면상의 X선 프렉토그래피 파라메타와 파면형성시의 파괴역학적 파라메타를 비교 검토하여 X선 프렉토그래피에 의한 ${\Delta}K$$K_{max}$의 평가 방법에 대하여 연구하였다. 또한, 정적하중부하에 의한 소성변형률의 비파괴적 평가법에 대하여도 검토하였다. 이를 위하여 인장시험으로 소성변형을 부하한 후, X선 프렉토그래피 파라메타를 이용하여 부하된 소성변형량의 비파괴평가법에 대하여 검토하였다. 그 결과 피로파괴시의 부하된 $K_{max}$와 피로손상 정도를 X선 프렉토그래피에 의하여 정량적으로 평가할 수 있는 방법을 제시하였다.

Failure Analysis and Countermeasures of SCM435 High-Tension Bolt of Three-Step Injection Mold

  • When injection mold is repeatedly used for mass production, fatigue phenomenon due to cyclic stress may occur. The surface and interior of structure might be damaged due to cyclic stress or strain. The objective of this study was to analyze failure of SCM435 high-tension bolts connecting upper and lower parts of a three-stage injection molding machine. These bolts have to undergo an accurate heat treatment to prevent the formation of chromium carbide and the action of dynamic stresses. Bolts were fractured by cyclic bending stress in the observation of ratchet marks and beach marks. Damaged specimen showed an acicular microstructure. Impurity was observed. Chromium carbide was observed near the crack origin. Both shape parameters of the Vickers hardness were similar. However, the scale parameter of the damaged specimen was about 20% smaller than that of the as-received specimen. Much degradation occurred in the damaged specimen. Bolts should undergo an accurate heat treatment to prevent the formation of chromium carbide. They must prevent the action of dynamic stresses. Bolts need accurate tightening and accuracy of heat treatment and screws need compression residual stress due to peening.

Cyclic fatigue resistance of M-Pro and RaCe Ni-Ti rotary endodontic instruments in artificial curved canals: a comparative in vitro study

  • Objectives: To compare the flexural cyclic fatigue resistance and the length of the fractured segments (FLs) of recently introduced M-Pro rotary files with that of RaCe rotary files in curved canals and to evaluate the fracture surface by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Materials and Methods: Thirty-six endodontic files with the same tip size and taper (size 25, 0.06 taper) were used. The samples were classified into 2 groups (n = 18): the M-Pro group (M-Pro IMD) and the RaCe group (FKG). A custom-made simulated canal model was fabricated to evaluate the total number of cycles to failure and the FL. SEM was used to examine the fracture surfaces of the fragmented segments. The data were statistically analyzed and comparisons between the 2 groups for normally distributed numerical variables were carried out using the independent Student's t-test. A p value less than 0.05 was considered to indicate statistical significance. Results: The M-Pro group showed significantly higher resistance to flexural cyclic fatigue than the RaCe group (p < 0.05), but there was no significant difference in the FLs between the 2 groups (p ≥ 0.05). Conclusions: Thermal treatment of nickel-titanium instruments can improve the flexural cyclic fatigue resistance of rotary endodontic files, and the M-Pro rotary system seems to be a promising rotary endodontic file.

니켈티타늄 전동 파일의 기계적 특성 비교: Aurum Blue vs. Aurum Pro (Comparison of mechanical properties of nickel-titanium rotary files: Aurum Blue vs. Aurum Pro)

  • AIM: The purpose of this study was to evaluate and compare the torsional fracture resistances, cyclic fatigue resistance, and bending stiffness of two nickel-titanium (NiTi) rotary instruments made of different heat-treated alloy: Aurum Blue (heat-treated) and Aurum Pro (conventional). Methods: Forty-five Aurum Blue and Aurum Pro NiTi files were selected for the three mechanical tests (n=15). For the torsional resistance test, 3 mm file tip was fixed and the shaft was driven clockwise at 2 rpm until fracture occurred by using a customized device. Cyclic fatigue resistance was evaluated by rotating instruments in artificial canal with dynamic mode. Bending stiffness was tested by observation of the bending moment on attaining a 45° bend. The results were analyzed by student-t tests at a significance level of 95%. The fractured surface of each groups were examined under a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Results: Aurum Blue showed significantly higher toughness, ultimate strength, distortion angle, and number of cycles to failure than those of Aurum Pro (p < 0.05). However, Aurum Blue and Aurum Pro did not differ significantly in terms of bending stiffness. SEM showed typical topographic appearances of the cyclic fatigue and torsional fracture. Conclusions: Under the limitations of this study, heat-treated instruments showed higher flexibility and fracture resistances than conventional NiTi instruments.
