Leptin is an adipocyte-secreted hormone and its plasma levels correlate with total body fat mass, however, it also plays a regulatory role in immunity, inflammation, and hematopoiesis. Chemokine is known as a chemoattractant cytokine in inflammatory reaction, but its role in leptin reaction has not been well studied. In this study, the direct effect of leptin on the expression of chemokine mRNAs and lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced chemokine KC mRNA in mouse peritoneal macrophages was investigated. Leptin did not induce the expression of lymphotactin, RANTES, eotaxin, MIP-1$\beta$, MIP-1$\alpha$, MIP-2, MCP-1, IP-10, TCA-3, and KC mRNA in mouse peritoneal macrophages, and had no direct effect on the expression of these LPS-induced chemokine mRNAs except KC mRNA. The synergistic effect of leptin on the expression of LPS-induced KC mRNA occurred late in the time course of response to LPS. The increased expressions of Ob-Rb mRNA and leptin receptor protein were detected during the LPS treatment. Leptin produced a substantial increase in the stability of the LPS-induced KC mRNA, and the synergistic effect of leptin on LPS-induced KC mRNA expression was further augmented by cycloheximide (CHX). Pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate (PDTC) did not block the synergistic effect of leptin on LPS-induced KC mRNA expression in mouse peritoneal macrophages. These data suggest that although leptin has no direct effect on the expression of lymphotactin, RANTES, eotaxin, MIP-1$\beta$, MIP-1$\alpha$, MIP-2, MCP-1, IP-10, TCA-3, and KC mRNA in mouse peritoneal macrophages, the synergistic effect of leptin on the expression of LPS-induced KC mRNA has the possibility that LPS might induce the expression of the Ob-Rb receptor or an unknown gene(s) that sensitizes macrophages to the synergistic function of leptin. Therefore, further studies are necessary to examine leptin as a regulatory factor of chemokine production.
To determine the relationship between hypertension and nutrient intake cross-sectional study were performed in a rural area. Adult resident over 30-year-old age were measured blood pressure and body mass index(BMI), and interviewed about food in-take for the previous 24 hours. 250 men and 297 women participated the survey. Significant correlation was showen in men between mean systolic blood pressure and protein density. Significant correlation with mean diastolic blood pressure was showen on protein density, protein energy(%), calcium density and energy-adjusted protein in men. We analysed risk factor for hypertension adjust the effect of age, BMI, sex and family history by multiple logistic regression. Protein density(odds ratio=3.18), fat density(odds ratio=1.94) and energy-adjusted protein(odds ratio=1.01) intake were positively associated with hypertension but sodium density(odds ratio=0.73) was showen to have inverse relationship.
The purpose of this study was to determine the health behaviors and nutritional status related to dyslipidemia in Korean middle-aged adults (between 50 and 64 years old) from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examinations Survey data (2007~2010). A total of 4,721 subjects were analyzed in this study. The subjects were divided into three groups (normal, borderline, and dyslipidemia) according to serum lipid levels. Parameters included in this study were drinking and smoking, anthropometric parameters, blood and nutritional parameters. The latter parameter included food/nutrients intake. All data was adjusted by sex, region, education level, and age. General linear model and logistic regression model were used for statistical analysis. The dyslipidemia group was comprised of more men than women. By contrast, the borderline group was comprised of more women than men (p<0.001). No significant differences were observed for other general characteristics. There were more smokers and drinkers(drinking per time) in the dyslipidemia group (p<0.05). Anthropometric data showed significant difference, ie, height (p<0.05), weight, body mass index, waist circumference, percent body fat, and blood pressure were higher in the dyslipidemia group (p<0.001). Only blood urea nitrogen showed no significant difference among groups. The HbA1c (p<0.01), fasting blood glucose, GOT, GPT, creatinine levels were higher in the dyslipidemia group (p<0.001). So it is required for the management of obesity in dyslipidemia group. The dyslipidemia group ate less sea food (p<0.05). The nutrients intake of energy and protein, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, calcium, phosphorus were lower in the dyslipidemia group (p<0.05). Therefore, to lower dyslipidemia prevalence rates, it is necessary to increase the intake of foods containing ${\omega}-3$ fatty acids. We also suggest a meal management program and nutritional education to recognize the risk of dyslipidemia, especially for people such as the individual in the borderline and dyslipidemia study groups.

Diabetes is a disease that contains a high concentration of glucose in blood and due to defects in either insulin secretion or insulin action. Although the distinctive causes and factors of diabetes have not been clarified, the genetic factors are suggested as a main susceptibility until now. SNP (Single Nucleotide Polymorphism), as the most common genetic variation, has an influence on personal susceptibility for diseases. A nonsynonymous SNP, which changes the amino acid of the protein and its function, is especially important. Therefore, this study hypothesized that there are associations between specific SNPs of the targeted genes. Transcription factor 7-like 2 (TCF7L2) and fat mass and obesity associated (FTO) genes were selected as target genes from the results of genome-wide association and other related research studies. Second, four nonsynonymous SNPs (three in TCF7L2 and one in FTO gene) were selected as target SNPs by using public database of NCBI (National Center for Biotechnology Information). The recruited personnel was classified into three subgroups of diabetes, impaired fasting glucose (IFG) and normal groups. The individual genotypes of each group were analyzed by resequencing. None of genetic variations at four targeted SNP sites was revealed in all samples of this study. However, this study found two new SNPs that were not reported in TCF7L2 gene. One is synonymous SNP, which is heterozygous of C/T and no amino acid change of asparagine/asparagines, was located at c1641 and found in one normal person. Another is nonsynonymous SNP, which is heterozygous of G/A, was located at c1501 and found in two samples. This new discovered nonsynonymous SNP induce the amino acid change from alanine to threonine. Moreover, this new nonsynonymous SNP was found among two persons, one of whom was a diabetes patient and the other one was a person at boundary between IFG and normal, suggesting that this variant might be associated with IFG or diabetes. Even if there is a limitation of sample number for statistical power, this study has an importance due to the discovery of new SNPs. In the future study, a large sample number of diabetes cohort will be needed to investigate the frequency and association with new discovered SNP.

Objective : The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of 8 weeks complex exercise program on height, body composition, and physical fitness in elementary school children. Method : The experimental group had 11 children (male=6, female=5) who belong to Seong-Nam Community Welfare Center in Gyeonggi-Do. All children received 50 minutes of complex exercise program 2 times a week for total of 8 weeks. In-body 520 were measured initially to serve as baseline data for height, and body composition. To determine the impact on physical fitness, Primus RS Power Track II commander Sit-up Trunk forward flexion measurement was also done. Repeat measurements of In-body520 Primus RS Power Track II Commander Sit-up Trunk forward flexion were done after 8 weeks. Results : There was significant increase in height, skeletal muscle mass, body fat percentage, lower limbs strength, and muscular endurance after the complex exercise program. There was, however, no significant difference in upper limbs strength, and flexibility after the program. Conclusions : These results indicate that the complex exercise program used in this study was very effective in producing significant benefits in height, body composition, and physical fitness in elementary school children. There would be better objective results if the control group and various environmental factors are considered in the future research.
The aim of this study was to evaluation the association between obesity and periodontitis according to the characteristics of subjects. The subjects of this study was 429 subjects aged 19 years or older from March to May, 2010. Data were analyzed with chi-square test, Multivariable logistic regression and Statistics were analyzed linear regression analysis using SPSS 18.0. WHR had dose-effect relationship with the number of sextants with periodontitis. With regard to relationships between obesity type and periodontitis depending on characteristics of objects, the WHR obesity group showed results higher than the normal group, for twice(OR: 2.24; 95% CI: 1.17-4.28) and three times or more(OR: 3.34; 95% CI: 1.53-7.27) in frequency of daily teeth brushing, 0-3 points(OR: 2.47; 95% CI: 1.09-5.59) and 4-6 points(OR: 3.99; 95% CI: 1.75-9.08) in the self-perception of stress level, and the group with 8 hours or more(OR: 4.20; 95% CI: 2.11-8.34) in the sleeping time. If anyone is judged to have obesity by WHR, we can say that the risk to have periodontitis together with it is 2.56 times more likely(95% CI: 1.58-4.13).

Ursolic acid (UA) supplementation was previously shown to improve skeletal muscle function in resistance-trained men. This study aimed to determine, using the same experimental paradigm, whether UA also has beneficial effects on exercise-induced skeletal muscle damage markers including the levels of cortisol, B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP), myoglobin, creatine kinase (CK), creatine kinase-myocardial band (CK-MB), and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) in resistance-trained men. Sixteen healthy participants were randomly assigned to resistance training (RT) or RT+UA groups (n=8 per group). Participants were trained according to the RT program (60~80% of 1 repetition, 6 times/week), and the UA group was additionally given UA supplementation (450 mg/day) for 8 weeks. Blood samples were obtained before and after intervention, and cortisol, BNP, myoglobin, CK, CK-MB, and LDH levels were analyzed. Subjects who underwent RT alone showed no significant change in body composition and markers of skeletal muscle damage, whereas RT+UA group showed slightly decreased body weight and body fat percentage and slightly increased lean body mass, but without statistical significance. In addition, UA supplementation significantly decreased the BNP, CK, CK-MB, and LDH levels (p<0.05). In conclusion, UA supplementation alleviates increased skeletal muscle damage markers after RT. This finding provides evidence for a potential new therapy for resistance-trained men.

A 4-week energy balance study was conducted to estimate the energy expenditure (EE) of 7 high school age men, 16 to 18 year of age, by measurement of energy intakes and changes in body energy (BE) content (intake/balance technique), keeping their normal living pattern and maintenance body weight. Gross energy intake (GE) and fecal energy (FE) loss was measured by bomb calorimetry, Urinary energy (UE) loss was calculated from nitrogen excreted. Fat mass (FM) was determined from body density estimated from skinfold thickness. 1) Mean constitutional ratio of carbohydrate, protein and Int for the total energy intake was $73.7{\pm}0.3%$, $13.5{\pm}0.3%$ and $12.9{\pm}0.5%$, respectively. 2) Fecal energy loss was 2.4% proportion of the gross energy intake. 3) Mean daily metabolizable energy estimated by subtract fecal and urinary energy loss was $2582{\pm}61\;kcal$. 4) Total body energy change estimated from body composition change over 28 days was decreased $4309{\pm}1837kcal$. 5) Mean daily energy expenditure was $2736{\pm}59kcal\;(46{\pm}1kcal/kg$ of body weight).

The present paper was attempted to obtain the basic date concerning a reasonable preparing method and optimum fermentation conditions of Kochujang (Red pepper paste). To establish the standard quality of Kochujang, the chemical compositions and the volatile components of Kochujang was discussed. The native Kochujang collected from 80 households contained 40.51% of moisture, 6.00% of salts, 3.25 % of crude fat, 10.30 % of crude ash, pH 4.79, 9.28ml of tillable acidity. 19.60% of reducing sugar, 179.51 mg/100g of amino nitrogen and 4.43% of total nitrogen. The volatiles of Kochujang were extracted by a steam-distillation under the reduced pressure and determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Total volatile components identified in the native Kochujang were 46 components, i. e., 30 components in neutral fraction, 8 components in phenolic fraction and 8 components in acidic fraction, respectively. But no components were detected basic fraction.
The mother's obesity-related stress and it's association with obesity, food intake, and physical activity in both mothers and their children were determined. Based on self-reports from 470 mothers, obesity stress of mothers were scored by using a five-point Likert scale; only low and high stress scores were used in this study. The perceptions of mothers' weights and their children's weights, mothers' Body Mass Indices (BMI), and preschoolers' Weight-Length Indices (WLI)(%) were also determined. The obesity stress of mothers was significantly associated with the mothers' BMI (high stress: $23.5{\pm}2.4$ vs. low stress: $19.6{\pm}1.7$, p<0.05), but not with their children's obesity. Mothers with a high obesity stress reported a higher percentage of family history of obesity (62.1% vs. 38.3%, p<0.001) than mothers with low obesity stress. Compared to mothers with low obesity stress, mothers with high stress had lower correct-perceptions about their weights (p<0.05) but higher correct-perceptions for their children's weights. Almost 54.5% of mothers with high stress reported watching television 2 or more extra hours per day, compared with 32.2% of mothers with low stress (p<0.05). More children of mothers with high stress had long hours of daily TV viewing than children of mothers with low stress (36.0% vs. 15.3%, $X^2=10.491$, p<0.05). Mothers with high stress reported lower intake of protein-rich foods (p=0.01) and vegetables (p=0.039), but a higher intake of snacks (p=0.009), compared to mothers with low stress. More children of mothers with high stress reported eating high fat snacks or high sugar snacks everyday, but this was not statistically significant. In conclusion, high obesity stress in mothers were greatly associated with their BMI and their inactive life style, including long TV viewing hours per day and unbalanced food intakes, which can lead their children becoming inactive and obese. Special attention is recommended for overstressed mothers and their children, especially those who enjoy long hours of TV viewing.
