  • The purpose of this study was to investigate differences in body fat distribution between normal and obese subjects and the relationship between risk factors(fasting blood sugar, blood pressure. fasting serum lipids) and obesity. Measurements of height. weight, skinfold thickness. body circumference. percent body fat. blood pressure, fasting blood sugar and serum lipids were made and a dietary survey was performed on 120(Males 61. Females 59) adult subjects. 1) Among the female subjects, the obese group appeared to have significantly higher centrality of body fat than the normal group. Obese groups of both sexes appeared with higher blood pressure than normal groups. No differences in daily average nutrient intake, fasting blood sugar and fasting serum lipids concentrations were observed between obese and normal groups. 2) In males. the serum triglyceride concentration was observed to have a significantly positive correlation to body weight, body mass index and body circumference, additionally concentrations of total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol were observed to have significantly positive correlations to the skinfold thickness. but the ratio of HDL-cholesterol/total cholesterol was observed to be significantly negatively correlated to the skinfold thickness. 3) In females. the obese group consumed about 47% of total energy intake at lunch. whereas the normal group consumed about 29% . The food habit score of males appeared to be negatively related to body weight, percent ideal body weight. But the food habit score of females appeared to be negatively related to percent body fat(r=-0.32, p<0.05) .

  • Fifteen mongrel dogs (14 male and 1 female) were injected intravenously with 30mg of streptozotocin and 50mg of alloxan monohydrate per kilogram of body weight to induce diabetes mellitus. Before treatment with streptozotocin and alloxan fasting serum glucose concentration was determined every other day or thrice a week (Monday, Wednesday, Friday) for 3 months. Among 15 dogs 4 dogs developed diabetes mellitus and survived more than 9 weeks without injection of insulin. After treatment fasting serum glucose and hemoglobin $A_1$ concentrations of the 4 dogs were determined every other day or thrice a week. Fasting serum glucose concentration increased acutely from 24 hours after treatment and then showed severe fluctuation. Hemoglobin $A_1$ concentration increased gradually until 7~9 weeks after treatment and then showed very slow increase afterwards. Correlation of hemoglobin $A_1$ to fasting glucose concentration was relatively weak(r = 0.10~0.80). Hemoglobin $A_1$ and fasting glucose concentration of preceding 7 week showed very high correlation (r = 0.98~0.99). It was indicated that hemoglobin $A_1$ concentration in chemically induced diabetic dogs reflects mean glucose concentration of preceding 7~9 weeks.

  • The influence of refeeding with either vitamin, mineral, fibre of water on protein synthesis and mRNA content in the liver and breast muscle of fasted chicks was investigated. At 15 d of age, chicks were fasted for 2 d and then refed either vitamin, mineral, fibre or water. The fractional synthesis rate (FSR) of protein was measured after 30 min of refeeding by using a large dose injection of L - 2, $6[^3H]$ phenylalanine. In the liver, FSR was reduced by fasting and tended to increase but not significantly by refeeding with vitamin or mineral. FSR was not affected by refeeding with fibre or water. There was no influence of fasting and refeeding on ribosomal capacity (the RNA : protein ratio) and ribosomal efficiency (total protein synthesised per total RNA). The absolute synthesis rate (ASR) of liver protein and hepatic mRNA content were reduced by fasting and unchanged by refeeding. In the muscle, FSR, ASR and mRNA content were significantly decreased by fasting and not recovered by refeeding with either vitamin, mineral, fibre or water. It concluded that vitamin, mineral, fibre and water have little capacity to stimulate liver and muscle protein synthesis reduced by fasting.

  • The purpose of this study was to Investigate the response of fasting serum glucose and basal insulin to dietary omega-3 fatty fish in normal subjects. Nineteen healthy female volunteer subjects were divided into two groups, depending on fish preference test. Low ap3 fatty acid group for 7 days received a experimental Inlet containing mackeral fish 100g. Calorie intake was 1780 kcal /day. The average 4ally u-3 fatty acid consumption from fish was 3.87g /day (1.03g EPA, 2.849 DHA) . High n-3 fatty acid group was given 7.74g maine u-3 fatty acid (200g mackeral fish) consisting of 2.06g EP45.68g DHA. Calorie intake was 1815 local /day Fasting blond serum glucose, insulin levels were measured at baseline, 7days after experimental diet. In the beginning the levels of fasting serum glucose, basal insulin were not different between both groups. There were no significant changes in fasting serum glucose, insulin levels by experimental diets. These data indicate that marine ar3 fatty acid consumption have no deleterious effect on glycemic control in normal subjects.

  • This study was performed to investigate the interrelationship between fasting serum insulin, eating behaviour, daily energy intake and the fatness in obese and non-obese women. The possibility of fasting serum insulin as potential predictive factor for eating behaviour and daily energy intake was also investigated. The results are as follows: 1) In obese women ; Subjects with higher fasting serum insulin were associated with higher speed of eating and shorter meal duration time. No association could be found between daily energy intake or the degree of obesity and fasting serum insulin. There was a significant positive correlation between obesity, daily energy intake and speed of eating. Obesity, daily energy intake were negatively related to meal duration time. Subjects with a rapid speed of eating were apt to overeat during eating behaviour experiment. Our findings suggested that a rapid speed of eating is a contributing factor to the development of obesity in obese women. 2) In non-obese women ; While subjects with higher insulin level were apt to overeat, we could not find any relation between overeating and daily energy intake. There was no correlation between eating speed and daily energy intake, but a significant positive correlation was found between meal duration time and daily energy intake. The degree of fatness was increased with the lower daily energy expenditure per body weight, or the higher waist hip girth ratio, fasting serum insulin and daily energy intake.

  • Introduction: ALT/AST enzymes are present inside the cells. AST is found in cardiac and skeletal muscle and red blood cells but the ALT is checked mainly in the liver. In general, the rise of these two indicators shows liver damage. The usual measurements of these enzymes are used in liver function tests, but the levels of AST and ALT do not always reflect liver function. Method and Cases: 17 cases of liver dysfunction transiently were evaluated clinically, biochemically, and imaging study of sonogram in pediatric in-patients for 3 years. Result: Most common causes of transient liver dysfunction were infection, especially viral gastroenteritis, and bacterial infection interfering oral food intake. More often occurred in the children who have infant hyperbilirubinemia, positive history of mitochondrial dysfunction or hypoglycemia. Fasting study in one case of hypoglycemia patient showed reversible liver dysfunction during fasting over 20 hours fasting. Discussion: A significant increase in AST and ALT with normal bilirubin can be observed in clinically healthy people during blunt trauma, viral infection, severe pain, metabolic syndrome, fasting or accidental health screening.

  • 1. Objectives The purpose of this study was to give an account of the effects of Sasang constitutional medicine and fasting therapy for the patient who has suffered from various signs or symptoms caused by psoriasis. 2. Methods The cases were one 50-year old man diagnosed as Taeeumin and one 29-year old man diagnosed as Soyangin. They all have the symptoms caused by psoriasis, such as rash, erythema, scaly skin, itching, etc. So we've recorded the progress of their symptoms as a score at the tables to check their conditions throughout the hospitalized period. We've diagnosed them as Soyangin, Taeeumin have prescribed Yangdokbaecho-tang and Galgeunhaegi-tang and have carried out fasting therapy. 3. Results and Conclusions The general condition of the patient have improved incredibly, where the each scores at the tables dropped from 4 to 0,1 and their symptoms like rash, erythema, scaly skin, itching, edema have almost disappeared at the end of the hospitalization period. This indicates that Yangdokbaecho-tang and Galgeunhaegi-tang can be used to treat main symptoms of psoriasis and fasting therapy can be used as a subsidiary therapy for the psoriasis.

  • Preliminary studies have claimed that short term fasting would negatively affect school performance and cognition. In contrast some other studies have reported not important decline in cognition and executive function as a result of fasting. Also limited attention was generally devoted to dietetic regimens, nutritional status and body weight. Yet neuroscience and neuro-cognitive aspects of acute hunger on the electroencephalogram and differences between obese and non-obese cases is not well understood. Hence, we decided to design and perform a case study in a more controlled situation similar to reality. Therefore, we performed several examinations including subjective tests (for eating status) and objective tests (cognitive tests such as Stroop effect and Sternberg search and electroencephalogram measures such as steady-state visual evoked potential and auditory steady-state responses) for an obese and a non-obese academic case before and after a simple breakfast. The results showed that the breakfast effects on the neuro-cognitive functions depend on either obesity status, nutritional status of the case or the type of cognitive task (visual or auditory). This paper would open a new insight to answer some important questions about the neuro-cognitive implications of fasting and feeding in obese and non-obese human cases.

  • This study investigated diurnal fasting and postprandial total ammonia nitrogen (TAN) excretion rates in juvenile Oplegnathus fasciatus (rock bream; mean body weight 45.8±1.1 g) at three temperatures (15, 20, and 25℃) in a recirculating system (three replicates). The fish were hand-fed twice daily (09:00 and 17:00 h) with commercial food (46.7% protein) until satiation. The results showed that the fasting and postprandial TAN excretion rates were temperature-dependent. The mean hourly rates were 7.7 (15℃), 10.2 (20℃), and 11.9 (25℃) mg kg fish-1 h-1 for fasting and 34.0 (15℃), 47.8 (20℃), and 60.2 (25℃) mg kg fish-1 h-1 for postprandial. At each temperature, two postprandial TAN excretion peaks were observed 2-4 h after feeding; the second peak was always higher. The TAN loss to nitrogen consumption ratio was 41.1-46.8 % and increased significantly with increasing temperature. Temperature affected fasting and postprandial TAN excretion in juvenile rock bream, providing insight for culture management.

  • This study classified subjects aged 30 to 64 into normal group, impaired fasting glucose group, and diabetes mellitus patient group based on data from the 6th period of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2013-2015). Skipping breakfast, lack of physical activity, inadequate sleep time, inadequate weight, excessive drinking, and current smoking are classified as a low health risk group when three or less items are present, and a high health risk group when three or more items are included. By classification, each item included in the physical measurement and biochemical analysis factors and health risk behavior factors was comparatively analyzed. As a result, in the normal group, impaired fasting glucose group, and diabetes group, the average age was higher in the group with high health risk factors than the group with low risk factors, and the male ratio was higher. Body mass index, waist circumference, blood pressure, triglyceride showed a significantly higher result. In the normal group, the fasting blood glucose level and total cholesterol level were also higher in group 2. Therefore, it is thought that it is necessary to control health risk behaviors through lifestyle changes in the normal group, fasting glucose disorder group, and diabetes group.
