In order to reduce damage from farmland inundation caused by recent climate change, it is necessary to predict the risk of farmland inundation accurately. Inundation modeling should be performed by considering multiple time distributions of possible rainfalls, as digital forecasts of Korea Meteorological Administration is provided on a six-hour basis. As building multiple inputs and creating inundation models take a lot of time, it is necessary to shorten the forecast time by building a data base (DB) of farmland inundation probability. Therefore, the objective of this study is to establish a DB of farmland inundation probability in accordance with forecasted rainfalls. In this study, historical data of the digital forecasts was collected and used for time division. Inundation modeling was performed 100 times for each rainfall event. Time disaggregation of forecasted rainfall was performed by applying the Multiplicative Random Cascade (MRC) model, which uses consistency of fractal characteristics to six-hour rainfall data. To analyze the inundation of farmland, the river level was simulated using the Hydrologic Engineering Center - River Analysis System (HEC-RAS). The level of farmland was calculated by applying a simulation technique based on the water balance equation. The inundation probability was calculated by extracting the number of inundation occurrences out of the total number of simulations, and the results were stored in the DB of farmland inundation probability. The results of this study can be used to quickly predict the risk of farmland inundation, and to prepare measures to reduce damage from inundation.
Smartphones change the picture of data and information sharing and make it possible to share various real-time flooding data and information. The vulnerability indicators of farmland inundation is needed to calculate the risk of farmland flood based on changeable hydro-meteorological data over time with morphologic characteristics of flood-damaged areas. To find related variables show the vulnerability of farmland inundation using the binary-logit model and correlation analysis and to provide vulnerability indicators were estimated by fuzzy set method. The outputs of vulnerability indicators were compared with the results of Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) for verification. From the result vulnerability indicators are applicable to mobile_based information system of farmland inundation.
Climate change has increased the number of floods and inundation on farmland. Recently various mobile applications through inundation mapping, flood forecasts and evacuation routes have been developed for the prevention and reduction of flood damages. However, most of current prevention systems for farmland flooding are still web-based systems relying on the field survey which needs a lot of human and time resources although mobile devices has been rapidly improved and widely used. The purpose of this study is to design a mobile application for preventing and reducing farmland flood and inundation damages and collecting damage information in real time. We put advanced mobile device functions such as GPS, network communications, cameras into our system design. This system implement 2way communication and intuitive application that will increase information efficiency and decrease flood damage. Our design has been tested through previous flooding data of Jinju city in 2010.
The objective of this study was to analyze the characteristics of combined 1D/2D inundation simulation of riverside farmland using the Hydrologic Engineering Center - River Analysis System (HEC-RAS). We compared and analyzed inundation simulation results between 1D and combined 1D/2D hydraulic simulation using HEC-RAS. Calibration and validation of stream stage were performed using three rainfall events. The coefficient of determination ($R^2$) and root mean square error (RMSE) between simulated and observed stream stage were 0.935 - 0.957 and 0.250 m - 0.283 m in calibration and validation, respectively. The inundation area showed no significant difference in 1D and combined 1D/2D simulation ($8.48km^2$ in 1D simulation, $8.75km^2$ in combined 1D/2D simulation). The average inundation depth by 1D simulation was 1.4 m deeper than combined 1D/2D simulation. In the lower inundation depth, the inundation area by combined 1D/2D simulation was larger than inundation area by 1D simulation. As the inundation depth increased, the inundation area by 1D simulation became wider. In the case of the 1D/2D combined simulation, low elevation areas along the river bank were inundated widely. Compared to 1D/2D combined simulation, the flood radius in some sections was longer in 1D simulation. In the 1D analysis, because the low altitude riverside farmlands are also assumed to stream, it is calculated that riverside farmlands have the same stage as the mainstream when the stream is overflowed. Therefore, the inundation area seems to be overestimated in those sections. In other regions, the inundation areas tend to be broken depending on overflow by each stream cross-section. In the case of river flooding, the overflow is expected to flow to the lower area depending on the terrain, such as the results of the combined 1D/2D simulation. It is concluded that the results of combined 1D/2D inundation simulation reflected the topographical characteristics of low-lying farmland.
The objective of this study was to develop a general inundation modeling technique considering the effect of drainage delay in the paddy field districts. In most studies, farmland inundation simulations have been conducted using previously developed watershed models. However, the water cycle in the paddy fields has a different structure from that of the general watershed, and the effect of the drainage delay should be considered. In this study, the drainage delay algorithm was developed using water balance equation, and the inundation modeling was performed for inundation-prone paddy fields located near Doowol stream. As a result, the depth of inundation was 43.1 cm and 45.2 cm, respectively, due to the 100-year and 200-year frequency rainfall. With the operation of drainage pump ($0.1m^3/s$), inundation depths decreased by 5.8 cm and 6.0 cm, respectively, and inundation time reduced by 20 hours and 21 hours, respectively for the 100-year and 200-year frequency rainfall. The result showed that the general inundation modeling technique developed in this study could reflect the effect of drainage delay due to the rise of external water level and the flooding reduction effect by operation of drainage pump. The results of this study are expected to be useful to establish measures for damage caused by farmland inundation.
The objective of this study was to make a map of farmland vulnerability to flood inundation based on morphologic characteristics from the flood-damaged areas. Vulnerability mapping based on the records of flood damages has been conducted in four successive steps; data preparation and preprocessing, identification of morphologic criteria, calculation of inundation vulnerability index using a fuzzy membership function, and evaluation of inundation vulnerability. At the first step, three primary digital data at 30-m resolution were produced as follows: digital elevation model, hill slopes map, and distance from water body map. Secondly zonal statistics were conducted from such three raster data to identify geomorphic features in common. Thirdly inundation vulnerability index was defined as the value of 0 to 1 by applying a fuzzy linear membership function to the accumulation of raster data reclassified as 1 for cells satisfying each geomorphic condition. Lastly inundation vulnerability was suggested to be divided into five stages by 0.25 interval i.e. extremely vulnerable, highly vulnerable, normally vulnerable, less vulnerable, and resilient. For a case study of the Jinju, farmlands of $138.6km^2$, about 18% of the whole area of Jinju, were classified as vulnerable to inundation, and about $6.6km^2$ of farmlands with elevation of below 19 m at sea water level, slope of below 3.5 degrees, and within 115 m distance from water body were exposed to extremely vulnerable to inundation. Comparatively Geumsan-myeon and Sabong-myeon were revealed as the most vulnerable to farmland inundation in the Jinju.
The objective of this study was to evaluate future inundation risk of farmland according to the application of coupled model intercomparison project phase 5 (CMIP5) and coupled model intercomparison project phase 6 (CMIP6). In this study, future weather data based on CMIP5 and CMIP6 general circulation model (GCM) were collected, and inundation was simulated using the river modeling system for small agricultural watershed (RMS) and GATE2018 in the Tanjung district of the Moohan stream watershed. Although the average probable rainfall of CMIP5 and CMIP6 did not show significant differences as a result of calculating the probability rainfall, the difference between the minimum and maximum values was significantly larger in CMIP6. The results of the flood discharge calculation and the inundation risk assessment showed similar to trends to those of probability rainfall calculations. The risk of inundation in the future period was found to increase in all sub-watersheds, and the risk of inundation has been analyzed to increase significantly, especially if CMIP6 data are used. Therefore, it is necessary to consider climate change effects by utilizing CMIP6-based future weather data when designing and reinforcing water structures in agricultural areas in the future. The results of this study are expected to be used as basic data for utilizing CMIP6-based future weather data.
The amount of rice yield reduction due to inundation should be estimated to analyse economic efficiency of the farmland drainage improvement projects because those projects are generally promoted to mitigate flood inundation damage to rice in Korea. Estimation of rice yield reduction will also provide information on the flood risk performance to farmers. This study presented the relationships between inundated durations and rice yield reduction rates for different rice growth stages from the observed data collected from 1966 to 2000 in Korea, and developed the rice yield reduction estimation model (RYREM). RYREM was applied to the test watershed for estimating the rice yield reduction rates and the amount of expected average annual rice yield reduction by the rainfalls with 48 hours duration, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 years return periods.
The objective of this study was to analyze the effect of the duration and time distribution of probability rainfall on farmland inundation for the paddy fields in the drainage improvement project site. In this study, eight drainage improvement project sites were selected for inundation modeling. Hourly rainfall data were collected, and 20- and 30-year frequency probability rainfalls were estimated for 14 different durations. Probability rainfalls were distributed using Intensity-Duration-Frequency (IDF) and Huff time distribution methods. Design floods were calculated for 48 hr and critical duration, and IDF time distribution and Huff time distribution were used for 48 hr duration and critical duration, respectively. Inundation modeling was carried out for each study district using 48 hr and critical duration rainfalls. The result showed that six of the eight districts had a larger flood discharge using the method of applying critical duration and Huff distribution. The results of inundation depth analysis showed similar trends to those of design flood calculations. However, the inundation durations showed different tendencies from the inundation depth. The IDF time distribution is a distribution in which most of the rainfall is concentrated at the beginning of rainfall, and the theoretical background is unclear. It is considered desirable to apply critical duration and Huff time distribution to agricultural production infrastructure design standards in consideration of uniformity with other design standards such as flood calculation standard guidelines.
