A Study on the Development of the Engine Room Fan Control System and ERFCS Algorithm for Ships Energy Saving (선박 에너지 절감을 위한 기관실 팬 제어 시스템 구축 및 알고리즘에 관한 연구)

  • Recently, there have been many studies pertaining to reducing energy consumption on ships. As part of those studies, the energy consumption of ships can be reduced by understanding and controlling the varying loads, excluding fixed loads. In existing ships, engine room fans are usually operated based on the actual experience of the crew without any special guidelines. To realize energy reduction, we investigate the characteristics of engine-room fans, and we propose an energy-management system called the engine room fan control system (ERFCS) and the ERFCS algorithm. The ERFCS controls the fan speed depending on the temperature and pressure, where one to four fans are operated depending on changes in the load. In addition, the minimum rotation speed of the engine-room fan was limited to 50% to prevent the surging phenomenon, which is due to fan damage or low pressure resulting from mechanical friction or heating at low fan speeds. We develop a fan control system simulation model using LabVIEW that is based on the proposed algorithm and ISO 8861. Finally, we perform simulations to confirm that operation of the proposed fan control system is possible using only 46.4% of the power required by the existing method.

  • Axial fans are widely used in heavy machines due to their ability to produce high cooling of engines. At the same time. the noise generated by these fans causes or serious problems. This work is concerned with the low noise technique of discrete. The prediction model. which allowed the calculation of acoustic pressure at the frequency and it's harmonics, has been developed by Farrasat and the Helmholtz-Kir. The newly developed Helmholtz-Kirchhoff BEM for thin body is used to calculate the sound field of the fan that is located in a engine room. To calculate the unsteady resultant force over blade. Time-Marching Free-Wake Method are used. The fan noise of fan sys unsymmetric engine-room is predicted.   • This paper reports a thermal environmental analysis of a room in accommodated with multi-heat sources according to ventilation condition. Two case modification have been investigated to obtain the lower temperature distribution in the room. The temperature distribution of the original room were found about $25{\sim}35^{\circ}C$. As a result, the use of, three ventilating fans and two electric fans are useful for room ventilation respectively, and using two electric fan is more recommendable in side of economical efficiency.

  • The performance of fan for engine room of ship is absolutely important when it take into consideration work efficiency, work condition, and the performance of various equipments. Fan performance test should be carried out during sea trial to satisfy owner's requirement as above mentioned. We have considered various values to affect fan test result. In here, various values are to be silencer, fan inlet shape, and arrangement of fan room. In general, the shapes of fan inlet is overall circular type because of the shapes of axial fan. So, all vessels built at SHI have been applied fan inlet of circular type. And now, in order to reduce sound of noise from supply fan, big silencer often has been installed at high value vessels. In this case, the capacity of supplied air can be insufficient due to silencer which is an obstructer about air flow. In this paper, we have studied the performance of fan through comparison between a circular shape and a square shape of fan inlet. We also compare with CFD results and experimental results.

  • Acoustical noise at low frequency range (below 500Hz) of refrigerator result from fans which are inside of the refrigerator. In generally to evaluate and apply to refrigerator it is recommended that acoustical noise and fluidic performance of the fan were measured simultaneously. To do that twin-room type anechoic wind tunnel was needed. But constructing twin room type anechoic wind tunnel was very expensive and estimation of small refrigerator fan performance was not easy. So in this paper we composed anechoic fan tester. A successful noise and performance measurement was performed using the anechoic fan tester. Existing 22 kinds of refrigerator fan were investigated and mapped into one database. Refrigerator duct pressure resistance were measured and reflected into the fan database to find out appropriate fan. Through the application of fan database, the refrigerator became less noise compared to current one and these data shows what is the best way to reduce fan noise.

At the same time, the noise generated by these fans causes one of the most serious problems. This work is concerned with the low noise technique of discrete frequency noise. To calculate the unsteady resultant force over the fan blade in an unsymmetric engine room, Time-Marching Free-Wake Method is used. From the calculations of unsteady force on fan blades, noise signal of an engine cooling fan is calculated by using an acoustic similarity law. (omitted)

An Experimental Study for Noise Reduction of the Cross-Flow Fan of the Room Air-Conditioners

  • Present study explains some experimental results on the aerodynamic noise of the cross-flow fan usually installed in the indoor unit of the room air-conditioners and provides a simple reduction method of radiating sound to decrease the total noise level. The spectra of the noise of the cross-flow fan were analyzed by the spectral decomposition method to characterize the generated sound. The unsteady fluctuating flow field was also measured using the I-type hot-wire probe. Comparing the spectral characteristics of the sound and the flow velocity, a useful noise reduction method was proposed, which bounds the region with a fence where the flow fluctuations were noticeably changed in the same fashion as the source spectral distribution functions vary. To validate the proposed method for reducing noise generated by the cross-flow fan, the sound pressure levels of the cross-flow fan system were compared with and without the bounding fence for various flow rates.

  • The engine cooling system is a device that keeps the temperature of the engine room at a proper level by driving the cooling fan when the engine room temperature that occurs during driving is above a certain temperature. Recently, the vehicle cooling system has been changed to electronic system. Therefore, in this paper, we will analyze the clutch operation characteristics for designing a superior electronic fan clutch. For this purpose, an electronic fan clutch was designed and a test bed for performance evaluation was constructed and analyzed.

  • Experimental study was made to find the effective ways for cooling of engine room in a power car through natural ventilation, forced ventilation and wind tunnel test of 1:10 model. Through the measurements of inner temperature of engine room and pressure distribution of model surface for the various opening combinations and the fan locations, the following results are obtained. For natural ventilation, side and top opening combination is more effective than the side openings only and optimal opening combination is all side openings with top center opening. For forced ventilation with fan on the roof, the combination of all sides and top opening is more effective than the combination of side and top opening, and the optimal location of fan is top center. When the model is located in the air stream, the combination of side and top opening is more effective than the side openings only, and the optimal location of top opening is the front opening. With both air stream and forced ventilation, the optimal location of fan is the side region, and the direction of side grill installation is found to have negligible effect on the room ventilation.
