Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the experience of smoking cessation in middle and high school students who smoked or were ex-smokers. Method: Data were collected through focus group interviews with 3 groups (15 students), and were analyzed according to the analytic method of Morgan (1998) and Krueger (1998). Results: Six categories were identified. They included reasons to quit smoking, efforts to maintain smoking cessation, lures to start smoking again, improved self-esteem after overcome temptations, frustration following repeated failures in attempts to quit smoking and suggestions to help maintain smoking cessation. Through these results, it was found that reasons for quitting smoking were different from those of adults, strategies to maintain smoking cessation were limited and repeated failure in attempts to quit smoking led students to give up attempting to quit smoking. Conclusion: A high percentage of adolescent smokers want to quit but are unsuccessful in doing so. Considering the results of our analysis, smoking cessation programs and strategies should be carefully developed to be more effective in help adolescents quit smoking and maintain smoking cessation.
Recently railway operators are doing a lot of researches and studies in order to apply reliability technologies to their maintenance tasks. The maintenance in the aviation and the munitions industry has been developed enough to be benchmarked with the high quality reliability technologies; however, railway industry is still situated in a rudimentary stage with insufficient & limited data. 5678 Seoul Metropolitan Rapid Transit Corporation, which has 17 year experience of the EMU maintenance and system development, has made a constant effort for appling RCM (Reliability Centered Maintenance) to the maintenance for a few years. In this connection, the case study is to be introduced. This paper is based on 'RCM Gateway to World Class Maintenance' by Anthony M. Smith". The reliability technology are applied to the specific EMU and its system by 7 stages; accordingly, applying SMRT's maintenance experience, a unique standard for FMEA(failure mode effect analysis) & LTA(logical tree analysis) is established. Moreover, for reasonable and effective preventive maintenance tasks, the case considering an analysis of failure effects is selected in the final step 7. SMRT will develop reliability technologies through the application of the results to all the EMU systems.
Common-cause failure (CCF) events can significantly impact the availability of safety systems of nuclear power plants. For this reason, the International Common Cause Data Exchange (ICDE) project was initiated by several countries in 1994. Since 1997 it has been operated within the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD)/Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) framework and has successfully been operated over six consecutive terms (the current term being 2015-2017). The ICDE project allows multiple countries to collaborate and exchange CCF data to enhance the quality of risk analyses, which include CCF modeling. As CCF events are typically rare, most countries do not experience enough CCF events to perform meaningful analyses. Data combined from several countries, however, have yielded sufficient data for more rigorous analyses. The ICDE project has meanwhile published 11 reports on the collection and analysis of CCF events of specific component types (centrifugal pumps, emergency diesel generators, motor operated valves, safety and relief valves, check valves, circuit breakers, level measurement, control rod drive assemblies, and heat exchangers) and two topical reports. This paper presents recent activities and lessons learnt from the data collection and the results of topical analysis on emergency diesel generator CCF impacting entire exposed population.

Non-visualization of larynx is one of the reasons for failure of vocal fold surgery. Many otorhinolaryngologists may have a trouble in choice of alternative treatment if they experience this situation. The laryngeal mask airway could be alternative approach for this situation. We report a glottal papillomatous patient who was treated by pulsed dye laser via laryngeal mask airway after failure of vocal fold surgery via endotracheal intubation. The patient was a 73-year-old man. Laryngoscopy revealed a severe diffuse papillomatous lesion on right true vocal cord, anterior commissure, and partial left true vocal cord. The patient was refered for difficult laryngeal exposure during laryngomicrosurgey under general endotracheal anesthesia.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine self care compliance, family support, and depression in patients with congestive heart failure. Method: The participants were 105 outpatients with congestive heart failure. Data were collected using a questionnaire survey on self care compliance, family support, and depression. The collected data were analyzed using the SPSS Win 10.0 program. Result: 1. The total score for Self care compliance was 78.34 out of a possible 120 and was significantly high for people in ages between 70-79 years and people who were not employed. Exercise compliance was significantly high in men and classifications I & II of the NYHA class. Compliance with smoking and alcohol cessation were significantly high in women. Medication compliance was significantly high in the group which had experience with hospitalization. Family support was 31.75 out of a possible 40 and showed significant differences depending on spouse status and religion. Depression was 30.18 out of a possible 64 and was significantly high in the group whose educational level was above college graduation or who were under 65 years of age. Conclusion: The results suggest that nurses have to emphasize smoking and alcohol cessation for men, exercise for women and total self care compliance for patients under 65 years of age.

In order to take account of the statistical properties of probability variables used in the structural analysis, the conventional approach using the safety factor based on past experience usually estimated the safety of a structure. The real structures could only be analyzed with the error in estimation of loads, material characters and the dimensions of the members. But the errors should be considered systematically in the structural analysis. Structural safety could not precisely be appraised by the traditional structural design concept. Recently, new approach based on the probability concept has been applied to the assessment of structural safety using the reliability concept. Thus, the computer program by the Probabilistic FEM is developed by incorporating the probabilistic concept into the conventional FEM method. This paper estimated for the reliability of a plane stress structure by Advanced First-Order Second Moment method using von Mises, Tresca and Mohr-Coulomb failure criterions. The reliability index and failure probability of attained by the Monte Carlo Simulation method with the von Mises criterion were same as PFEM, but the Monte Carlo Simulation were very time-consuming. The variance of member thickness and load could influence the reliability and failure probability most sensitively among the design variables from the results of the parameter analysis. And proper failure criterion must be used to design safely.
A massive distributed storage system is the foundation for big data operations. Access latency performance is a key metric in distributed storage systems since it greatly impacts user experience while existing codes mainly focus on improving performance such as storage overhead and repair cost. By generating parity nodes from parity nodes, in this paper we design new XOR-based erasure codes hierarchical tree structure code (HTSC) and high failure tolerant HTSC (FH HTSC) to reduce access latency in distributed storage systems. By comparing with other popular and representative codes, we show that, under the same repair cost, HTSC and FH HTSC codes can reduce access latency while maintaining favorable performance in other metrics. In particular, under the same repair cost, FH HTSC can achieve lower access latency, higher or equal failure tolerance and lower computation cost compared with the representative codes while enjoying similar storage overhead. Accordingly, FH HTSC is a superior choice for applications requiring low access latency and outstanding failure tolerance capability at the same time.
This paper assesses the damage to high-set rectangular-plan houses with low-pitch gable roofs (built in the 1960 and 70s in the northern parts of Australia) to wind speeds experienced in tropical cyclones. The study estimates the likely failure mode and percentage of failure for a representative proportion of houses with increasing wind speed. Structural reliability concepts are used to determine the levels of damage. The wind load and the component connection strengths are treated as random variables with log-normal distributions. These variables are derived from experiments, structural analysis, damage investigations and experience. This study also incorporates progressive failures and considers the inter-dependency between the structural components in the house, when estimating the types and percentages of the overall failures in the population of these houses. The progressively increasing percentage of houses being subjected to high internal pressures resulting from damage to the envelope is considered. Results from this study also compare favourably with levels of damage and related modes of failure for high-set houses observed in post-cyclone damage surveys.

Background and Objectives: In cochlear implant (CI) surgery, the results and causes of revision and reimplantation may guide surgeons in establishing surgical protocols for revision surgery with safe audiological outcomes. The aim of this study was to review our experience in terms of etiology, surgical strategy, and hearing outcomes in pediatric patients who underwent CI removal and reimplantation. Subjects and Methods: All patients received implants of the same brand. Pre and postoperative Categories of Auditory Performance score and aided free-field pure tone audiometry thresholds were noted. In vivo integrity tests were performed for each patient and the results of ex vivo tests of each implant were obtained from manufacturer. Results: A total of 149 CIs were placed in 121 patients aged <18 years. The revision rate in children was 6.7% (10/121 children). Six patients had a history of head injury leading to a hard failure. The causes of reimplantation in others were soft failure (n=1), electrode migration (n=1), infection (n=1), and other (n=1). All patients showed better or similar postreimplantation audiological performance compared with pre-reimplantation results. Conclusions: It is very important to provide a safe school and home environment and educate the family for reducing reimplantation due to trauma. Especially for active children, psychiatric consultation should be continued postoperatively.
