A Study on 3-Dimensional Profilometry of Steam Generator Tube Using a New Eddy Current Probe

  • There are many types of the geometric transitions such as dent, bulge, protrusion, expansion, etc, on the inner and outer surfaces of heat exchanger tubes, steam generator tubes, and condenser tubes of nuclear power plants. Such geometric transition causes a local residual stress in heat exchanger tubes and acts as a structural factor accelerating the evolution of defects, in particular stress corrosion cracks. In the conventional eddy current test methods, the bobbin coil profilometry can provide 2-dimensional geometric information on the variation of the average inner diameter along the tube length, but the 3-dimensional distribution and the quantitative size of a local geometric transition existing in the tube cannot be measured. In this paper, a new eddy current probe, developed for the 3-dimensional profile measurement, is introduced and its superior performance is compared with that from the conventional bobbin coil profilometry for the various types of geometric transition. Also, the accuracy of the probe for the quantitative profile measurement is verified by comparing the results with that from the laser profilometry. It is expected that the new eddy current probe and techniques can be effectively used for an optimization of the tube expansion process, and the management of tubes with geometric transitions in service.

Significance of Cell Cycle and Checkpoint Cnotrol (세포주기조절에 관한 최근 연구)

  • Regulation of cell proliferation is a complex process involving the regulated expression and /or modification of discrete gene products. which control transition between different stages of the cycle. The purpose of this short review is to provide an overview of somatic cell cycle events and their controls. Cycline have appeared as major positive regulators in this network, because their association to the cyclin-dependent kinases(Cdks) allows the subsequent activation on the Cdk/cyclin complexes and their catalatic activity. In mammalian cells, early to mid G1 progression and late G1 progression leading to S phase entry are directed by D-type cyclins-Cdk4, 6 and cyclin E-Cdk 2 both of which can phosphorylate the retinoblastoma protein (pRB). pRB is a transcriptional repressor which, in its unphosphorylated state, binds to members of the E2F transcription factor family and blocks E2F-dependent transcription of genes controlling the G1 to S phase transition an subsequent DNA synthesis. Cyclin A is produced in late G1 and expressed during S and G2 phae, and expression of B-type cyclins is typically maximal during the G2 to M phase transition and it controls the passage through M phase. They primarily associate with the activate Cdk2, and Cdc2, respectively. On the other hand, the Cdk inhibitors negatively control the activity of C아/cyclin complex by coordinating internal and/or external signals and impending proliferation at several key checkpoints. These current and further findings will provide novel approaches to understanding and treating major diseases.

Return Migration in Regional Innovation Systems

  • This study aims to explore and understand the role of return migrants in the regional innovation system of a transition economy (China) by analyzing the activities of returning entrepreneurs in two emerging high-tech industries in Shanghai. The empirical analysis is based on in-depth interviews with founders of high-tech companies and experts in Shanghai. The results of the analysis reveal that return migrants are a significant factor for the Shanghai innovation system, which is presently in a transition from a former manufacturing site to a metropolitan region comprising a range of industries (including high-tech) and services. First of all, return migrants are important for the Shanghai RIS in terms of numbers. Second, they engage in activities in the medium range of high-tech which reflects prevailing weaknesses of the framework conditions for innovation in Shanghai. However, due to their international background, returning entrepreneurs are able to overcome these weaknesses, and thus contribute to the development of high-tech industries in Shanghai and to a reduction of the technological lock-in.

Study on Thermal and Structural Properties of Epoxy/Elastomer Blend (에폭시/엘라스토머 블렌드의 열적 및 구조적 특성에 관한 연구)

  • In this paper, thermal and structural properties of epoxy/elastomer blend were measured by DSC, TGA and FESEM. Specimens were made of dumbbell forms by the ratio of 5, 10, 15, and 20[phr] by changing elastomer content. The measuring temperature ranges of DSC were from -20[℃] to 150[℃] and heating rate was 4[℃/min]. And the measuring temperature ranges of TGA were from 0[℃] to 800[℃], and heating rate was 5[℃/min]. Also we observed structure of specimens through FESEM with magnification of 1000 times and voltage of 15[kV] by breaking quenched specimens. As experimental results, we could know that thermal and structural properties were improved according to decrease of elastomer content. Because it increased glass transition temperature, high temperature and structure of elastic epoxy.

  • Leveling colostomy with a frozen-section biopsy in a Hirschsprung's disease is an important factor for a successful procedure. Two neonatal cases of Hirschsprung's disease in the descending colon are reported. In both cases, loop ileostomy was established because of the unavailability of frozen-section biopsy on an emergency basis. At the time of definitive procedure of the first case, transition zone at the splenic flexure was noted and was compatible with the frozen section biopsy. In the second case, an unexpected longer resection at a higher level than transition zone was required because of the poor vascularity after dissection. In conclusion, a leveling colostomy should be selected as a choice in long-segment Hirschsprung's disease. Confirming preservation of the marginal artery of Drummond is particularly important in case of Hirschsprung's disease in the descending colon.

On the Selection of FCC and BCC Lattices in Poly(styrene-b-isoprene) Copolymer Micelles

  • Spherical micelles of poly(styrene-b-isoprene) (SI) diblock copolymers in selective solvents have been reported to pack onto either face-centered cubic (fcc) or body-centered cubic (bcc) lattices. The selection rule for fcc and bcc lattices has been understood in terms of the intermicellar potentials, and they have been quantified using the ratio of the corona layer thickness to the core radius, $L/R_c$, as suggested by McConnell and Gast. In order to test the validity of the McConnell-Gast criterion, this study compared the $L/R_c$ values from various solutions i.e. nine SI copolymers in several different selective solvents. The McConnell-Gast criterion was not found to be a determining factor, even though it could explain the fcc/bcc selection qualitatively. From the phase diagrams, the transition between fcc and bcc phases was also considered as a function of concentration and temperature, and their physical mechanisms are discussed based on the recent mean-field calculation reported by Grason.

Deterministic structural and fracture mechanics analyses of reactor pressure vessel for pressurized thermal shock

  • The structural integrity of the reactor pressure vessel under pressurized thermal shock (PTS) is evaluated in this study. For given material properties and transient histories such as temperature and pressure, the stress distribution is found and stress intensity factors are obtained for a wide range of crack sizes. The stress intensity factors are compared with the fracture toughness to check if cracking is expected to occur during the transient. A round robin problem of the PTS during a small break loss of coolant transient has been analyzed as a part of the international comparative assessment study, and the evaluation results are discussed. The maximum allowable nil-ductility transition temperatures are determined for various crack sizes.

  • With the increase of portable system and high-density IC, power consumption of VLSI circuits is very important factor in design process. Power estimation is required in order to estimate the power consumption. A simple and correct solution of power estimation is to use circuit simulation. But it is very time consuming and inefficient way. Probabilistic method has been proposed to overcome this problem. Transition density using probability was an efficient method to estimate power consumption using BDD and Boolean difference. But it is difficult to build the BDD and compute complex Boolean difference. In this paper, we proposed Propowest. Propowest is building a digraph of circuit, and easy and fast in computing transition density by using modified COP algorithm. Propowest provides an efficient way for power estimation.

  • Phase-shedding, one famous technology for multi-phase converters, is implemented in a bi-directional multi-phase converter for ESS. It reduces active operating modules at light load to compensate efficiency. Shedding point, the load level where the converter changes the number of active modules, is important factor that affects the effect of phase-shedding. Loss analysis is done for determining shedding point. Phase-shedding hysteresis is applied so that excessive phase transition is avoided. This paper proposes shedding point correction where the shedding point is adaptively corrected by calculating a new shedding point.

Characteristics of Ramsey Resonance Signal in an Optically Pumped Cesium Atomic Clock (광펌핑 세슘원자 시계에서의 Ramsey 공진 특성)

  • We observed Ramsey resonance signals from an optically pumped cesium atomic clock and compared them with the theoretical results calculated from the Ramsey transition probabilities. The theoretical results were in good agreement with the experimental results when the weighting factor of $1/{\nu}$ was taken into account to the Maxwellian distribution of velocities in the atomic beam. It was also found that the clock transition signal of Rabi-Ramsey spectra can be greatly enhanced by using two lasers with the proper polarizations as pumping sources of cesium atoms.
