  • Lens shaped and stratiform titanomagnetite orebodies in the Boreumdo iron mine are closely associated with amphibolite which intruded into Precambrian metasediments. Mineralogical and petrochemical analyses of amphilbolite and titanomagnetite ores were carried out in order to interpret the origin of amphilbolite and the genesis of titanomagnetite ore deposits. Amphibolites belong to orthoamphilbolite interms of Niggli value and mineralogy, and are characterized by the occurrence of relict olivine. The amphilbolites responsible for titanomagnetite mineralization have extremely high content of $TiO_2$, ranging from 2.12 to 4.59 wt.% with the average value of 3.43 wt.%. Amphibole minerals in amphibolites are consist mainly of calcic amphiboles such as hornblende, ferroan pargasitic hornblende and tremolite. Most plagioclases belong to andesine ($An_{30-50}$\ulcorner). The metamorphic temperature and geobarometric pressure which are calculated by the calcic amphibole-plagioclase geothermometer and calcic amphilbole geobarometer are estimated to be 537$^{\circ}C$~579$^{\circ}C$(avg. 555$^{\circ}C$) and 2.9~6.6 kbar (avg. 4.5 kbars), respectively. It shows a typical amphibolite facies. Based on the mineral chemistry and petrochemisty of amphibolites and iron ores which are composed mainly of titanomagnetite and ilmenite in the Boreumdo iron mine, the titaniferous oxide melts could be immiscibly separatd from the titaniferous ultrabasic magma. The genesis of the Boreumdo titanomagnetite ore deposits are analogous to the Soyeonpyeongdo and Yonchon iron ore deposits in terms of their mineralogy, mineral chemistry and geologic setting.

  • The Anyang Feldspar Mine is located in Seoksu Dong, Anyang City, Kyeonggi Do, Korea and has a long exploitation record that is once produced high grade sodium feldspars, for glaze. Geologically, This area is mainly composed of Mesozoic Jurassic biotite granite (Anyang granite) which intruded Precambrian Kyeonggi Gneiss Complex outcroped near the mining area. The deposit is localized on the southwest hill side of Anyang granite batholith and is confined in hydrothemal alteration zone formed by sodium-rich alkali hydrothermal fluids along the fractures of leucocratic granite showing later differentiation facies in the biotite granite. The hydrothermal alteration is characterized by albitization, sericitization, and desilication. The microscopic observation and EPMA, XRD analysis of the feldspar ores show that major minerals are albite and quartz and accessory minerals are orthoclase and sericite, and they are rarely associated with perthite, fluorite, zircon, kaolinite, molybdenite, microcline and iron-oxide. In the REE pattern, the strong negative Eu anomalies of the feldspar ores indicate the influence of feldspar fractionation and show similiar pattern of the host leucocratic granite. The filling temperature of quartz crystals in ore zone ranges from $276^{\circ}C$ to $342^{\circ}C$, and it is inferred that the alteration occurred by the hypothermal solution.

  • The Mesozoic leucocratic granite in the northeastern margin of the Taebaeksan Basin was transformed to protomylonite and mylonite. Mylonitic foliations generally strike to NWWNW and dip to NE with the development of a sinistral strike-slip (top-to-the-northwest) shear sense. Grain-size reduction of feldspar in the mylonitized leucocratic granite occurred due to fracturing, myrmekite formation and neocrystallization of albitic plagioclase along the shear fractures of K-feldspar porphyroclasts. As the deformation proceeded, compositional layering consisting of feldspar-, quartz- and/or muscovite-rich layers developed in the mylonite. In the feldspar-rich layer, fine-grained albitic plagioclase and interstitial K-feldspar were deformed dominantly by granular flow. On the other hand, quartz-rich layers containing core-mantle and quartz ribbons structures were deformed by dislocation creep. Based on calculations from conventional two-feldspar and ternary feldspar geothermometers, mylonitization temperatures of the leucocratic granite range from 360 to $450^{\circ}C$. It thus indicates that the mylonitization has occurred under greenschist-facies conditions. Based on the geochemical features and previous chronological data, the leucocratic granite was emplaced during the Middle Jurassic at volcanic arc setting associated with crustal thickening. And then the mylonitization of the granite occurred during the late Middle to Late Jurassic (150-165 Ma). Therefore, the mylonitization of the Jurassic granitoids in the Taebaeksan Basin was closely related to the development of the Honam shear zone.

  • Stratigraphic subdivision, correlation and depositional environments of Oligocene strata in the Cheju basin are studied using microfossils, wireline-log, trace elements from Geobuk-1, Okdom-1 and JDZ V-2 exploratory wells as well as seismic attributes. Application of these Integrated approaches is becoming increasingly an important tool in sedimentary and petroleum geology. The purpose of this study is to provide an integrated sequence-stratigraphic interpretation for petroleum system in the Cheju basin. During the last several years the Cheju basin has been studied for petroleum potential in terms of sequence stratigraphy. The strata assigned to be of the Early Miocene in the previous studies are reinterpreted to be of Oligocene in age. Depositional environments of these strata are also reinterpreted to have been influenced significantly by marine floodings. This interpretation is supported by the lines of evidence such as occurrences of abundant dinoflagellates and calcareous nannofossils, higher sulfur (1000-10000 ppm), TOC contents $(>1{\~}3{\%})$ and hydrogen index, and specific biomarkers such as dinostrane and $C_{30}$ 4-methyl steranes. Seismic facies, determined as a fairly continuous amplitude reflection, relatively parallel uniform strata, also provides a clue for recognizing marine transgressions during the Oligocene. Two 2nd--order stratigraphic cycles are observed in Oligocene strata based on well-log responses and the presence of microfossils. Each sequence comprises shallow marine deposits in the lower part and inner-outer neritic deposits in the upper part, thus showing a upward-deepening trend. In petroleum exploration point of view, the presence of marine strata would provide a better exploration potential for source rock and reservoir quality in the Cheju basin, offshore Korea.

  • The high-P metamorphic belt in central China, between the Sino-Korean and the Yangtze continental plates, is composed of the low-T and high-P metamorphic belt on the south and the high-T and high-P metamorphic belt on the north. The low-T and high-P metamorphic belt consists predominantly of bimodal metamorphic volcano-sedimentary sequences of Middle to Upper Proterozoic, characterized by the occurrences of blueschists, which have undergone a progressive metamorphism from blueschist through greenschist to epidote amphibolite facies with metamorphic conditions of 7~14 kb and 350~$560^{\circ}C$. The high-T and high-P and high-P metamorphic belt mainly consists of the Upper Archean to Lower Proterozoic crystalline basement characterized by the aboundant occurrences of eclogites formed at 12~28 kb and 620~$840^{\circ}C$. The formation of high-P metamorphic belt is related to the collision between the Sino-Korean and the Yangtze continental plates during Indosinian orogeny. The two belts may extend to central Korean Peninsula correlating respectively to the Okchon belt and the Kyonggi massif based on comparative studies of geography, tectonics and petrology. Therefore, much attention should be paid to search for such high-P metamorphic rocks as blueschists or eclogites in those two areas, which can play a key role for understanding the tectonic evolution of the Korean Peninsula.

  • The Seoguipo Formation occurs only in a small exposure along the coast of the Seoguipo City, but in the subsurface, underlies tile western part of the Bugcheon-Pyoseon Line in the northeastern part of tile island. The Bugcheon-Pyoseon Line is presumed to be a facies boundary that reflects tile distribution of hyaloclastites resulted from submarine volcanic activity. The Seoguipo Formation is distributed in the subsurface along the part which is lower than 400m in average altitude, and occurs at El. -5.76∼-46.63m in tile southern area, El. -41.89∼-57.97m in the western area, El. -13.15∼-50.59m in the northern area. Therefore, the southern area was uplifted after the deposition of the Seoguipo Formation. In the subsurface, the vertical depth of the volcanic rocks of the Cheju Volcanic Edifice is El. -40.6m in the southern area, El. -111.3m in the western area, El. -81.5m in the northern area and El. -134.7m in the eastern area. The unconsolidated U Formation, which is, overlying the basement and about 70∼250m thickness underlies the whole island. There is a positive correlation between tile groundwater level and the depth of the subsurface distribution of the Seoguipo Formation. Consequently, it is conformed that the subsurface distribution of the Seoguipo Formation plays important role for controlling the characteristics of the reservoir of tile groundwater in Cheju Island.

  • We investigated the benthic polychaete assemblage in Gwangyang Bay and Yeosu Sound in February 1997. The sediment was an almost entirely muddy facies. The benthic macrofauna comprised 295 species occurring at a mean density of 875 $indiv./m^2$. Polychaetes were the major faunal component; there were 94 species at mean density 765 $indiv./m^2$. The highest abundance and species richness occurred in the Myodo south and north channels, in the mouth of Gwangyang Bay, and in the Noryang channel mouth. The most abundant polychaete was Tharyx sp. (47.9%), followed in rank order by Heteromastus filiformis (9.6%), Melinna cristata (9.3%), and Lumbrineris longifolia (7.3%). Cluster analysis divided the study area into four station groups based on station similarities in benthic polychaete assemblages: the Glycinde-Prionospio cluster in the western inner bay, the H. filiformis cluster in the middle inner bay, the Melinna-Lumbrineris cluster in the Myodo south-north channel, and the Tharyx cluster in the eastern main channel region. The sediment type of Gwangyang Bay has changed gradually from sandy to muddy. Dominant species have also changed from Chone teres and Lagis bocki to Tharyx sp., which is a potential organic pollution indicator.

  • In order to determine the spatio-temporal distribution of macrobenthic faunal communities in Jinhae Bay, quantitative faunal samples were collected seasonally at 23 sites in Jinhae Bay from February, 2011 to November, 2012. Sediment facies were found to be mud except for those at Chilcheon-do near Geoje Island. Mean values of TOC (%) ranged between 1.3 and 3.6%, and these are the highest values recorded excluding special management areas in Korea. Hypoxia occurred every summer in the whole areas of Jinhae Bay except around Geoje Island in the bay mouth. Due to the summer hypoxia, species richness, density and biomass also declined during the summer in Jinhae Bay. Opportunistic species such as Paraprionospio patiens, Sigambra bassi, Nectoneanthes oxypoda and Theora fragilis occurred as the dominant species before and after the hypoxia. However, Capitella capitata appeared as a dominant species only during the winter-spring season every year. From cluster analysis, Jinhae Bay could be divided into two sites groups: one group occupied the normoxic zone and the other one located in the hypoxic zone.

  • The human nose is located in the center of the face and it's cosmetic importance is high. The contour of the nasal dorsum and side walls play a major role in the shaping of the nose, and even a slight distortion may results in significant variance of the human facies. However, in the case of patients with wide nasal bone, augmention rhinoplasty can make nasal planes look wide, resulting in bulbous appearing noses or lateral borders of the nasal implant may be visible after the surgery making the final cosmetic results unsatisfactory. To solve such problems, from march, 1999 to march, 2004, the authors have performed augmention rhinoplasty in 36 patients. The cause of operations were as follows: flat nose 20, hump nose 5, deviated nose 4, secondary rhinoplasty 7. Paramedian osteotomy was performed at a distance that was the same as the width of the implant from the midline(5 mm + 5 mm). To prevent it from connecting to the roof at the lateral osteotomy line, intentional green stick fracture of the roof was performed. Agumentation rhinoplasty was done with either Silicone or Gortex and ear cartilage as a supplement. The follow up period was 2 weeks to 13 months with an average of 5.5 months. There were no infections and postoperative bleeding. As a result, the nose was augmented higher and narrower than before which we and the patient both found highly satisfactory.
