  • This paper introduces a new model based method for facial expression recognition that uses facial grid angles as feature space. In order to be able to recognize the six main facial expression, proposed method uses a grid approach and therefore it establishes a new feature space based on the angles that each gird's edge and vertex form. The way taken in the paper is robust against several affine transformations such as translation, rotation, and scaling which in other approaches are considered very harmful in the overall accuracy of a facial expression recognition algorithm. Also, this paper demonstrates the process that the feature space is created using angles and how a selection process of feature subset within this space is applied with Wrapper approach. Selected features are classified by SVM, 3-NN classifier and classification results are validated with two-tier cross validation. Proposed method shows 94% classification result and feature selection algorithm improves results by up to 10% over the full set of feature.

  • Objectives: Injuries of neurologic structures during parotid surgery are sometimes unavoidable even in benign tumors. Since the major postoperative neurologic complications such as facial nerve palsy and Frey's syndrome give a serious and heavy burden to both patients and surgeons, it is very important to know detailed information concerning risk factors, the incidence of complication, possibility of recovery, and the term before complete recovery. Materials and Methods: This report was based on 95 patients with parotid gland tumor who had been treated and followed up over 1 year at department of surgery and otolaryngology, chonnam university hospital. Results: 1) Among total 95 cases, the facial nerve palsy developed in 18 cases(l8.9%) and Frey's syndrome in 6 cases(6,3%). 2) The incidence of facial nerve palsy increased in cases with large tumor size, and in those operated with bipolar method. However, we didn't find out relationships between the incidence of facial palsy, localization, and histologic type. 3) The incidence of Frey's syndrome showed an increasing tendency in the cases with large tumor size, benign nature, and in those underwent superficial lobectomy with posterior approach, without a statistical significance. Conclusions: Risk of facial nerve palsy, especially a transient form, seems to be related to tumor size and bipolar coagulation method. Although Frey's syndrome tends to develop easily in the cases treated with superficial lobectomy under the diagnosis of benign tumor, a futhermore study is suggested to obtain a statistical significance.

  • This paper describes methodology which enables user in order to generate facial expression animation of caricature which applies a facial motion data in the vector based caricature. This method which sees was embodied with the plug-in of illustrator. And It is equipping the user interface of separate way. The data which is used in experiment attaches 28 small-sized markers in important muscular part of the actor face and captured the multiple many expression which is various with Facial Tracker. The caricature was produced in the bezier curve form which has a respectively control point from location of the important marker which attaches in the face of the actor when motion capturing to connection with motion data and the region which is identical. The facial motion data compares in the caricature and the spatial scale went through a motion calibration process too because of size. And with the user letting the control did possibly at any time. In order connecting the caricature and the markers also, we did possibly with the click the corresponding region of the caricature, after the user selects each name of the face region from the menu. Finally, this paper used a user interface of illustrator and in order for the caricature facial expression animation generation which applies a facial motion data in the vector based caricature to be possible.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate differences in craniofacial characteristics of professional sportsmen who have practiced since their prepubertal periods. From the standardized lateral and P-A cephalograms of 137 sportsmen, 7 angular, 19 linear, 4 ratio, and 2 index measurements were measured and evaluated by means of statistical methods. The samples were divided into three groups: Group 1; ice hockey(n=17), foot-ball(n=27), basketball(n=16) Group 2; baseball(n=16), gymnastics(n=13), and Group 3; judo(n=18), ssireum(n=10), weight lift(n=20). The results were as follows: It seemed obvious that the cephalic indices of the 3 groups exhibited brachycephalic headform (Group 1; $0.85{\pm}0.04$, Group 2; $0.84{\pm}0.04$, Group 3; $0.83{\pm}0.06$) and there was no statistical difference among the groups (p>0.05). The facial indices of the Group 1 ($0.93{\pm}0.05$) and Group 2 ($0.93{\pm}0.04$) exhibited definite leptoprosopic facial forms while the Group 3 ($0.90{\pm}0.04$) showed more or less euryprosopic facial form, and there appeared significant difference between the Group 1 and 3 (p<0.05), and also between the Group 2 and 3 (p<0.05). There appeared strong relationships between the facial indices and the facial axis angle, mandibular plane angle, total craniofacial height, total facial height, upper anterior dental height, lower anterior dental height, mandibular length, lower anterior facial height ratio, and especially with lower anterior facial height (p<0.001). It seemed that most of the vertical facial measurements of the Group 1 and 2 appeared to be larger than those of the Group 3.

  • The esthetic factor for the esthetic prosthesis were studied on 300 persons. The praaticipants were 150 students registered under the Deparment of Dental Laboratoy Technology, Jisan Junior College at the present day of June, 1995 and their mothers. The results were as follows; 1. The number of persons with 28 teeth in their oralcatity was highest(P<0.01). They complained that they have only 28 teeth bacaues of the loss(deficiency) fo teeth due to their impacted teeth and dental caries. 2. The presons with feelings of dissatisfaction were large in number(P<0.01). They were dissatisfied with an abnormal tooth form(33.5%), tooth position(31.7%), tooth color(31.1%), and tooth size(3.7%) in order(P<0.01). 3. In their facial form, the most numerous were men with square form and women with ovoid form(P<0.01). Among the whloe number fo facial forms it appeared to decresae in the order of ovoied(41.8%), square(32.7%), square+tapered(20.5%), and tapered form(5%)(P<0.01). In a profile form, the most numerous were men with A form and women with B. Among the whole participants the most numerous were persons with B form and persons with A and C form were next in oder of numbers(P<0.01). 4. In discoloration of teeth, the most numerous were persons who have no discoloration. 5. In the esthetic recovery of anterior prosthesis the color matching of proximal teeth was not correct, but the outline of proximal teeth was to be reproduced correctly. 6. In the diastema of teeth, the number of persons who have no diastema was higher than that of persons who have a disatema(P<0.01) Among the persons who have diastema the most numerous were persons who have a diastema, and next were 2, 4, 3 and 5 diastemas in order. 7. In a meeting point of the midline of the body and the tooth the number of person hanving a meeting point was higher than that of persons who did not fit each other(P<0.01). The bias direction of midline teeth appeared to be affected by chewing direction, prosthesis location, and posterior location. 8. The length and width of teeth in the tooth size were suitable(P<0.01). The number of persons who have central teeth longer than lateral teeth was high(P<0.0). 9. In the results of smile analysis, the line form connected with incisal edge of upper canine were parallel(P<0.01). When smile the location fo upper lips should be in accord with the central area of teeth(P<0.01) and lower lip should be atteched to the edge of anterior teeth in order to be esthetic. 10. Among the number of upper teeth we can see the most numerous were 8 teeth and next were 10, 6 and 12 in order.

  • Oral cancer treatment involves the surgical removal of all or part of the maxilla, leaving the patient with a defect that compromises the integrity and function of the oral cavity. The postoperative restoration of esthetics, deglutition, and speech shortens recovery time in the hospital and expedites the patient's return to the community as a functioning member. The surgical obturator is the proven treatment option in such situations. This article describes a simple technique to fabricate a surgical obturator that restores patient's original dentition and facial and palatal tissue form. The obturator fabricated with this technique utilizes the vacuum formed index of patient's original tissue form and duplicated partly in heat and partly in auto polymerizing acrylic resin. Duplication of the original tissue form helps patient to minimize the immense physiological trauma immediately after the surgical resection. The obturator fabricated with this technique supports soft tissues after surgery and minimizes scar contracture and disfigurement, and thus may have a positive effect on the patients' psychology.

  • Objectives : Recently, Thread Embedding Acupucnture (TEA) targeting under dermis became known to be effective for facial wrinkles and folds; its practice has begun in clinics. The introduction of a new form of TEA is continuing, and 'Volume TEA' is introduced recently. Therefore, we would like to report on the improvement of facial wrinkles by using the recently introduced 'volume TEA'. Methods : We reviewed the medical records of three patients who received 'Volume TEA' treatment at a Korean medical clinic, the photographs taken before and after the procedure were corrected using a Photoshop program and the length of the each wrinkles and folds were measured. Results : The length of wrinkles measured in all three cases decreased. Especially, the decrease of the length of the nasolabial folds was obvious. In case 1, the length of the nasolabial folds of 177mm and 97mm were reduced to 94mm and 63mm, respectively. In the case 2, the length of the nasolabial folds of 155mm and 155mm were reduced to 0mm and 70mm, respectively, after the procedure. In case 3, the length of the nasolabial folds of 170mm and 50mm decreased to 38mm and 37mm after the procedure, respectively. Conclusions : At present, it seems that the ongoing accumulation of relevant studies on the efficacy and safety of wrinkle and folds of TEA seems necessary. This study also has some significance in the level of case report.

  • This study was performed to investigate the average anthropometric value of normal Korean men and women and to compare the preceding literatures. Additionally, average Korean profilogram was made to serve as a template for diagnosis of facial form. Eighty five Korean subjects(41 men, 44 women) aged between 21 to 26 were selected by members of the author's department on the basis of intact dentition and Class I occlusion without facial asymmetry. Frontal and lateral photographs were taken under standardized condition with digital camera. The image was magnified and adjusted according to the FH plane of cephalometric radiographs and digitized using personal computer. To compare the Western beauty, 25 esthetically pleasing female was selected to measure various angle and distance of the face. 1. It was possible to calculate the mean coordinate value of Korean normal samples which enables the direct visualization and comparison with the use of template. The method in this study was easy to applicate under the Microsoft $Windows^{(R)}$ bases. 2. Maxillary vertical hypoplasia, upper and lower lip protrusion was characteristics of Korean norms and relatively narrow alar base distance, less conspicuous nasal projection was observed. As the vermilion exposure and upper lip length was more than western norm, chin looks shorter than western. To compare the Korean and Western esthetically pleasing profile, facial convexity and nose was less conspicuous in Korean women.
