In this paper, we propose a face recognition system using AAM and Gabor feature vectors. EBGM, which is prominent among face recognition algorithms employing Gabor feature vectors, requires localization of facial feature points where Gabor feature vectors are extracted. However, localization of facial feature points employed in EBGM is based on Gator jet similarity and is sensitive to initial points. Wrong localization of facial feature points affects face recognition rate. AAM is known to be successfully applied to localization of facial feature points. In this paper, we propose a facial feature point localization method which first roughly estimate facial feature points using AAM and refine facial feature points using Gabor jet similarity-based localization method with initial points set by the facial feature points estimated from AAM, and propose a face recognition system based on the proposed localization method. It is verified through experiments that the proposed face recognition system using the combined localization performs better than the conventional face recognition system using the Gabor similarity-based localization only like EBGM.

Nowadays many people have an interest in facial expression and the behavior of people. These are human-robot interaction (HRI) researchers utilize digital image processing, pattern recognition and machine learning for their studies. Facial feature point detector algorithms are very important for face recognition, gaze tracking, expression, and emotion recognition. In this paper, a cascade facial feature point detector is used for finding facial feature points such as the eyes, nose and mouth. However, the detector has difficulty extracting the feature points from several images, because images have different conditions such as size, color, brightness, etc. Therefore, in this paper, we propose an algorithm using a modified cascade facial feature point detector using a convolutional neural network. The structure of the convolution neural network is based on LeNet-5 of Yann LeCun. For input data of the convolutional neural network, outputs from a cascade facial feature point detector that have color and gray images were used. The images were resized to $32{\times}32$. In addition, the gray images were made into the YUV format. The gray and color images are the basis for the convolution neural network. Then, we classified about 1,200 testing images that show subjects. This research found that the proposed method is more accurate than a cascade facial feature point detector, because the algorithm provides modified results from the cascade facial feature point detector.

Face recognition is a technology to extract feature from a facial image, learn the features through various algorithms, and recognize a person by comparing the learned data with feature of a new facial image. Especially, in order to improve the rate of face recognition, face recognition requires various processing methods. In the training stage of face recognition, feature should be extracted from a facial image. As for the existing method of extracting facial feature, linear discriminant analysis (LDA) is being mainly used. The LDA method is to express a facial image with dots on the high-dimensional space, and extract facial feature to distinguish a person by analyzing the class information and the distribution of dots. As the position of a dot is determined by pixel values of a facial image on the high-dimensional space, if unnecessary areas or frequently changing areas are included on a facial image, incorrect facial feature could be extracted by LDA. Especially, if a camera image is used for face recognition, the size of a face could vary with the distance between the face and the camera, deteriorating the rate of face recognition. Thus, in order to solve this problem, this paper detected a facial area by using a camera, removed unnecessary areas using the facial feature area calculated via a Gabor filter, and normalized the size of the facial area. Facial feature were extracted through LDA using the normalized facial image and were learned through the artificial neural network for face recognition. As a result, it was possible to improve the rate of face recognition by approx. 13% compared to the existing face recognition method including unnecessary areas.

Facial expression recognition, a topical problem in the field of computer vision and pattern recognition, is a direct means of recognizing human emotions and behaviors. This paper first summarizes the datasets commonly used for expression recognition and their associated characteristics and presents traditional machine learning algorithms and their benefits and drawbacks from three key techniques of face expression; image pre-processing, feature extraction, and expression classification. Deep learning-oriented expression recognition methods and various algorithmic framework performances are also analyzed and compared. Finally, the current barriers to facial expression recognition and potential developments are highlighted.
Facial feature detection is a fundamental function in the field of computer vision such as security, bio-metrics, 3D modeling, and face recognition. There are many algorithms for the function, active shape model is one of the most popular local texture models. This paper addresses issues related to face detection, and implements an efficient extraction algorithm for extracting the facial feature points to use on iOS platform. In this paper, we extend the original ASM algorithm to improve its performance by four modifications. First, to detect a face and to initialize the shape model, we apply a face detection API provided from iOS CoreImage framework. Second, we construct a weighted local structure model for landmarks to utilize the edge points of the face contour. Third, we build a modified model definition and fitting more landmarks than the classical ASM. And last, we extend and build two-dimensional profile model for detecting faces within input images. The proposed algorithm is evaluated on experimental test set containing over 500 face images, and found to successfully extract facial feature points, clearly outperforming the original ASM.
In this paper, we present a new approach to detect and recognize human face in the image from vision camera equipped on the mobile robot platform. Due to the mobility of camera platform, obtained facial image is small and pose-various. For this condition, new algorithm should cope with these constraints and can detect and recognize face in nearly real time. In detection step, ‘coarse to fine’ detection strategy is used. Firstly, region boundary including face is roughly located by dual ellipse templates of facial color and on this region, the locations of three main facial features- two eyes and mouth-are estimated. For this, simplified facial feature maps using characteristic chrominance are made out and candidate pixels are segmented as eye or mouth pixels group. These candidate facial features are verified whether the length and orientation of feature pairs are suitable for face geometry. In recognition step, pseudo-convex hull area of gray face image is defined which area includes feature triangle connecting two eyes and mouth. And random lattice line set are composed and laid on this convex hull area, and then 2D appearance of this area is represented. From these procedures, facial information of detected face is obtained and face DB images are similarly processed for each person class. Based on facial information of these areas, distance measure of match of lattice lines is calculated and face image is recognized using this measure as a classifier. This proposed detection and recognition algorithms overcome the constraints of previous approach [15], make real-time face detection and recognition possible, and guarantee the correct recognition irregardless of some pose variation of face. The usefulness at mobile robot application is demonstrated.
This paper proposes a classifier based on rectangular feature to detect face in real time. The goal is to realize a strong detection algorithm which satisfies both efficiency in calculation and detection performance. The proposed algorithm consists of the following three stages: Feature creation, classifier study and real time facial domain detection. Feature creation organizes a feature set with the proposed five rectangular features and calculates the feature values efficiently by using SAT (Summed-Area Tables). Classifier learning creates classifiers hierarchically by using the AdaBoost algorithm. In addition, it gets excellent detection performance by applying important face patterns repeatedly at the next level. Real time facial domain detection finds facial domains rapidly and efficiently through the classifier based on the rectangular feature that was created. Also, the recognition rate was improved by using the domain which detected a face domain as the input image and by using PCA and KNN algorithms and a Class to Class rather than the existing Point to Point technique.

The current vision-based approaches for emotion recognition, such as facial expression analysis, have many technical limitations in real circumstances, and are not suitable for applications that use them solely in practical environments. In this paper, we propose an approach for emotion recognition by combining extrinsic representations and intrinsic activities among the natural responses of humans which are given specific imuli for inducing emotional states. The intrinsic activities can be used to compensate the uncertainty of extrinsic representations of emotional states. This combination is done by using PRMs (Probabilistic Relational Models) which are extent version of bayesian networks and are learned by greedy-search algorithms and expectation-maximization algorithms. Previous research of facial expression-related extrinsic emotion features and physiological signal-based intrinsic emotion features are combined into the attributes of the PRMs in the emotion recognition domain. The maximum likelihood estimation with the given dependency structure and estimated parameter set is used to classify the label of the target emotional states.

This paper suggests a facial expression recognition system using face detection, face alignment, facial unit extraction, and training and testing algorithms based on AdaBoost classifiers. First, we find face region by a face detector. From the results, face alignment algorithm extracts feature points. The facial units are from a subset of action units generated by combining the obtained feature points. The facial units are generally more effective for smaller-sized databases, and are able to represent the facial expressions more efficiently and reduce the computation time, and hence can be applied to real-time scenarios. Experimental results in real scenarios showed that the proposed system has an excellent performance over 90% recognition rates.

While artificial neural networks are adept at identifying patterns, they can struggle to distinguish between actual correlations and false associations between extracted facial features and criminal behavior within the training data. These associations may not indicate causal connections. Socioeconomic factors, ethnicity, or even chance occurrences in the data can influence both facial features and criminal activity. Consequently, the artificial neural network might identify linked features without understanding the underlying cause. This raises concerns about incorrect linkages and potential misclassification of individuals based on features unrelated to criminal tendencies. To address this challenge, we propose a novel region-based training approach for artificial neural networks focused on criminal propensity detection. Instead of solely relying on overall facial recognition, the network would systematically analyze each facial feature in isolation. This fine-grained approach would enable the network to identify which specific features hold the strongest correlations with criminal activity within the training data. By focusing on these key features, the network can be optimized for more accurate and reliable criminal propensity prediction. This study examines the effectiveness of various algorithms for criminal propensity classification. We evaluate YOLO versions YOLOv5 and YOLOv8 alongside VGG-16. Our findings indicate that YOLO achieved the highest accuracy 0.93 in classifying criminal and non-criminal facial features. While these results are promising, we acknowledge the need for further research on bias and misclassification in criminal justice applications
