Reliable face recognition under various illumination environments is essential for successful commercialization. Feature-based face recognition relies on a good choice of feature vectors. Gabor feature vectors are known to be more robust to variations of pose and illumination than any other feature vectors so that they are popularly adopted for face recognition. However, they are not completely independent of illuminations. In this paper, we propose an illumination-robust face recognition method based on the Gabor feature vector illumination PCA model. We first construct the Gabor feature vector illumination PCA model where Gator feature vector space is rendered to be decomposed into two orthogonal illumination subspace and face identity subspace. Since the Gabor feature vectors obtained by projection into the face identity subspace are separated from illumination, the face recognition utilizing them becomes more robust to illumination. Through experiments, it is shown that the proposed face recognition based on Gabor feature vector illumination PCA model performs more reliably under various illumination and Pose environments.
A 3D face shape derived from 2D images may be useful in many applications, such as face recognition, face synthesis and human computer interaction. To do this, we develop a fast 3D Active Appearance Model (3D-AAM) method using depth estimation. The training images include specific 3D face poses which are extremely different from one another. The landmark's depth information of landmarks is estimated from the training image sequence by using the approximated Jacobian matrix. It is added at the test phase to deal with the 3D pose variations of the input face. Our experimental results show that the proposed method can efficiently fit the face shape, including the variations of facial expressions and 3D pose variations, better than the typical AAM, and can estimate accurate 3D face shape from images.
Face tracking is to estimate the motion of a non-rigid face together with a rigid head in 3D, and plays important roles in higher levels such as face/facial expression/emotion recognition. In this paper, we propose an AAM-based face tracking algorithm. AAM has been widely used to segment and track deformable objects, but there are still many difficulties. Particularly, it often tends to diverge or converge into local minima when a target object is self-occluded, partially or completely occluded. To address this problem, we utilize the scale invariant feature transform (SIFT). SIFT is an effective method for self and partial occlusion because it is able to find correspondence between feature points under partial loss. And it enables an AAM to continue to track without re-initialization in complete occlusions thanks to the good performance of global matching. We also register and use the SIFT features extracted from multi-view face images during tracking to effectively track a face across large pose changes. Our proposed algorithm is validated by comparing other algorithms under the above 3 kinds of occlusions.

In this study, a fully automatic pose and expression invariant 3D face alignment algorithm is proposed to handle frontal and profile face images which is based on a two pass course to fine alignment strategy. The first pass of the algorithm coarsely aligns the face images to an intrinsic coordinate system (ICS) through a single 3D rotation and the second pass aligns them at fine level using a minimum nose tip-scanner distance (MNSD) approach. For facial recognition, multi-view faces are synthesized to exploit real 3D information and test the efficacy of the proposed system. Due to optimal separating hyper plane (OSH), Support Vector Machine (SVM) is employed in multi-view face verification (FV) task. In addition, a multi stage unified classifier based face identification (FI) algorithm is employed which combines results from seven base classifiers, two parallel face recognition algorithms and an exponential rank combiner, all in a hierarchical manner. The performance figures of the proposed methodology are corroborated by extensive experiments performed on four benchmark datasets: GavabDB, Bosphorus, UMB-DB and FRGC v2.0. Results show mark improvement in alignment accuracy and recognition rates. Moreover, a computational complexity analysis has been carried out for the proposed algorithm which reveals its superiority in terms of computational efficiency as well.
In this paper, we propose a detection method for facial features in color images with various backgrounds and face poses. To begin with, the proposed method extracts face candidacy region from images with various backgrounds, which have skin-tone color and complex objects, via the color and edge information of face. And then, by using the elliptical shape property of face, we correct a rotation, scale, and tilt of face region caused by various poses of head. Finally, we verify the face using features of face and detect facial features. In our experimental results, it is shown that accuracy of detection is high and the proposed method can be used in pose-invariant face recognition system effectively

A 3D model based approach for a face representation and recognition algorithm has been investigated as a robust solution for pose and illumination variation. Since a generative 3D face model consists of a large number of vertices, a 3D model based face recognition system is generally inefficient in computation time and complexity. In this paper, we propose a novel 3D face representation algorithm based on a pixel to vertex map (PVM) to optimize the number of vertices. We explore shape and texture coefficient vectors of the 3D model by fitting it to an input face using inverse compositional image alignment (ICIA) to evaluate face recognition performance. Experimental results show that the proposed face representation and recognition algorithm is efficient in computation time while maintaining reasonable accuracy.

In manufacturing, humans are being replaced with robots, but expert skills remain difficult to convert to data, making them difficult to apply to industrial robots. One method is by visual motion recognition, but physical features may be judged differently depending on the image data. This study aimed to improve the accuracy of vision methods for estimating the posture of humans. Three OpenPose vision models were applied: MPII, COCO, and COCO+foot. To identify the effects of face-covering accessories and image preprocessing on the Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) structure, the presence/non-presence of accessories, image size, and filtering were set as the parameters affecting the identification of a human's posture. For each parameter, image data were applied to the three models, and the errors between the actual and predicted values, as well as the percentage correct keypoints (PCK), were calculated. The COCO+foot model showed the lowest sensitivity to all three parameters. A <50% (from 3024×4032 to 1512×2016 pixels) reduction in image size was considered acceptable. Emboss filtering, in combination with MPII, provided the best results (reduced error of <60 pixels).
Face recognition under controlled settings, such as limited viewpoint and illumination change, can achieve good performance nowadays. However, real world application for face recognition is still challenging. In this paper, we propose using the combination of Affine Scale Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT) and Probabilistic Similarity for face recognition under a large viewpoint change. Affine SIFT is an extension of SIFT algorithm to detect affine invariant local descriptors. Affine SIFT generates a series of different viewpoints using affine transformation. In this way, it allows for a viewpoint difference between the gallery face and probe face. However, the human face is not planar as it contains significant 3D depth. Affine SIFT does not work well for significant change in pose. To complement this, we combined it with probabilistic similarity, which gets the log likelihood between the probe and gallery face based on sum of squared difference (SSD) distribution in an offline learning process. Our experiment results show that our framework achieves impressive better recognition accuracy than other algorithms compared on the FERET database.

Face recognition is an extensively researched area of computer vision. Visible, infrared, thermal, and 3D modalities have been used against various challenges of face recognition such as illumination, pose, expression, partial information, and disguise. In this paper we present a multi-modal approach to face recognition using convolutional neural networks. We use visible and thermal face images as two separate inputs to a multi-input deep learning network for face recognition. The experiments are performed on IRIS visible and thermal face database and high face verification rates are achieved.

There are a lot of problems in the face detection area. One of them is detecting faces by facial features and reducing number of the false negatives and positions. This paper is directed to solve this problem by the proposed triangle method. Also, this paper explans cascades, Haar-like features, AdaBoost, HOG. We propose a scheme using 12-net, 24-net, 48-net to scan images and improve efficiency. Using triangle method for frontal pose, B and B1 methods for other poses in neural networks are proposed.
