The purpose of this study is to investigate the feasibility of applying the chitosan for a natural mordant. The chitosan, a natural chelate macromolecule, is acquired from the crustacean. Investigation was focused on the change of the dyeability according to the chitosan treatment based on the Caesalpinia sappan and the color change of the dyed fabric according to the application of heavy metal mordant. The change of air permeability of the fabric with the dyeing condition was also investigated systematically. The effect of dyeing with/without mordant on the air permeability of the fabric after the chitosan treatment. It seems that the increase in the dye-uptake is attributable to the fact that chitosan forms a complex with the Caesalpinia sappan and Al during mordant dyeing of cotton fabric. For nylon fabric, the darkest color was achieved on the occasion of non-mordant dyeing of the fabric. The mordant treatment or chitosan treatment, however, reduced the dyeability. While the dyed nylon fabric could maintain the same air permeability as the grey nylon fabric, the cotton fabric lowered the air permeability after dyeing.
In this study, the mechanical properties related to the fabric appearance of well being functional bamboo knitted fabric before and after loess dyeing were evaluated. The mechanical properties of fabrics were measured by KES-F system, that is, shape retention, draping, wrinkle recovery, compression property, and surface properties, and total hand value of three types of knitted fabric, 100% bamboo, 100% cotton, and bamboo / cotton blend (60 / 40) were evaluated before and after loess dyeing. As a result, it was found that appearance density, shape retention, and drape coefficient of cotton knitted fabric were greater than those of bamboo knitted fabric. After loess dyeing, shape retention and drape coefficient, wrinkle recovery of bamboo knitted fabric improved and WC/C and MMD/SMD decreased. According to THV, the hand of bamboo/cotton blend knit is the best among three samples by compensation the weak properties of the two fiber. Therefore, loess dyeing seemed to be a good method for improving shape retention and hand value of 100% bamboo and bamboo blended fabric.
In order to provide a tool for designing more efficient methods of mixing fabric, a simplified discrete element computational model was developed for modeling fabric dynamics in a rotating horizontal drum. Because modeling the interactions between actual pieces of fabric is quite complex, a simplified model was developed where individual pieces of bundled fabric are represented by spherical particles. The simulations are used to investigate fabric bundle kinematics, the power required to drive the rotating drum, and the power dissipated through normal and tangential contacts. Parametric studies indicate only fill percentage, drum rotation speed, and friction coefficient play significant roles in the fabric bundle dynamics.
We investigated the effects of the fabric structure or the kinds of plated metals on the electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (EMI SE) by means of electroless plating on polyester fabric. We found that the weight of deposited metal, EMI SE, and flexibility of the conductive fabric for EMI shield is affected by morphology of fabric and structure of fiber. The EMI SE of conductive fabric plated Ni/Cu/Ni by electroless plating method on draw textured yarn (DTY) polyester was in the practically useful range of above 70 dB over a wide frequency range of 10 MHz to 1.0 GHz at the surface resistivity of $0.05{\Omega}/{\square}$. Au or Ag plated conductive fabric by immersion plating method is not able to provide for a good EMI SE.
This investigation reported the simulation technologies to design the 3-dimensional fabrics such as 3 dimensional multi-layered fabric, 3 dimensional braided fabric and spacer fabric. The simulation system or software has been actively used to develop products of 3 dimensional fabric which can be reduced development costs and time. Thus, many countries such as Japan, Germany, China, and U.K. show great interests on simulation technologies for developing new materials and processes including 3 dimensional fabric field. In this study, simulation systems have been reviewed for the 3 dimensional fabric design system from Mikawa Textile Research Center, Japan; ProCad and ProFab from Karl Mayer and Texion, Germany; xComposites from China; TexGen from Nottingham University, U.K.; TexPro from Young Woo CnI, Korea, respectively.
Chitosan is the affinitive finishing agent and gives susceptible effect in textile finishing. In order to examine the modification of polyester fabric treated with chitosan, we observed the characteristic of polyester fabric surface and measured its physical properties. For the purpose of confirming the adhesion of cationic material, we made a comparative study on anionic acid dye. The fabric was treated with crosslinking agent after chitosan finishing. Glutardialdehyde as crosslinking agent was used to improve the fixation rate of chitosan on the polyester fabric. And the US value was increased according to increasing of chitosan concentration. As the concentration of crosslinking agent was increased, whiteness index of the fabric chitosan treated was increased. Moisture regain of the fabric treated with $1\%$ chitosan was doubled and that treated with $2\%$ chitosan was tripled comparing with original fabric. Tensile strength of the chitosan treated fabric had been an increase of $10\%$ compared with alkali treated fabric and crease resistance decreased regardless of chitosan concentration.
Polycarboxylics acids are used as crosslinking agents for cotton cellulose to produce durable finished press cotton fabric. It has been observed that the strength of the cotton fabric treated with polycarboxylic acids showed significant reduction as a result of the crosslinking process. The effect of acid-catalyzed depolymerization on the tear strength of cotton fabric is investigated by evaluating the cotton fabric treated by succinic acid, which does not crosslink cotton cellulose and form little ester on the cotton fabric. We find that the tear strength of cotton fabric treated with succinic acid decreases at elevated temperature due to acid-catalyzed depolymerization of cellulose. The magnitude of fabric strength reduction increases as the acid concentration increases. At a constant acid concentration, it increases as the curing temperature and time increases. It decreases as the pH of the acid solution increases. We also find that the dissociation constant of an acid also has a significant effect on the fabric strength reduction. The magnitude of fabric tear strength reduction increases as the acid dissociation constant decreases.
The purpose of this study was to create a database of information on fabric factors(i.e., fabric insulation, fabric weight, clothing weight, fabric thickness, air permeability, and water vapor resistance) of clothing used for insulations, to compare them according to clothing types, and to estimate thermal resistance of clothing using these factors. A total of 25 kinds of clothing were selected(9 types for suits, 6 types of jacket, 5 types for shirts, and 5 types for trousers). The results of this study were as follows; Thermal insulation of clothing showed the highest positive correlation(0.85, p>0.01) with thermal insulation of fabric and very high positive correlation with water vapor resistance, fabric thickness, fabric weight, and clothing weight, respectively, 0.77, 0.77, 0.73, 0.71(p>0.01). Fabric weight of jacket was higher than that of shirts and trousers. Air permeability of shirts was the highest of clothing types. Clothing insulation of jacket was higher than that of shirts and trousers and its fabric insulation was also the highest of clothing types. Regression analysis showed that fabric thickness, water vapor resistance, and fabric weight would be useful factors for estimating the thermal resistance of clothing.
A new, high-efficiency ultrasonic fabric washing machine was developed to be an energy-efficient washing machine and to enhance fabric washing quality in washing processes of the dyeing and finishing process in the textile industry. This system is composed of ultrasonic wave generator, air blowing nozzle, torque motor for fabric tension control, and enclosed washing bath, multi-tube type exchanger, noiseless heater, air cylinder, expander roller, mangle upper and lower rollers, bend bar, dancer, shower spray nozzle, and solenoid valve, and so on. These elements are synergised for fabric washing. One of the very important principles is the low tension fabric running system. For an efficient washing effect, a counter flow system is also adopted. The new system also adopts the dancer and torque motor to control fabric tension and prevent fabric creasing. Shower spray nozzle, counter flow and overflow apparatus, and air-blowing apparatus are adopted to enhance the fabric washing effect. In this study, peach yoryu, exter, and moss crepe fabrics were washed by the general and ultrasonic washing systems under different conditions respectively. The washing efficiency was affected by the fabric running speed and characteristics of fabrics. Size content after washing increased with increasing the fabric running speed. The values in the general washing system were higher than those of the ultrasonic washing system. The changes of conductivity in the ultrasonic and the cooling bath were affected by the running time under the ultrasonic generating. The values of conductivity decreased as the experimental time passed.
This study aims to apply 3D virtual fabric parameters - as obtained from previous research experiments - to 3D virtual clothing simulation in comparing its similarity with actual clothing as worn, with a view to verifying the objectivity and validity of the 3D virtual fabric simulation method devised by the drape image analysis method. In addition, the result is intended to be used as the basic data for new 3D virtual clothing simulation methods. As the results, 3D virtual fabric parameters designed to simulate 3D drape to be similar to actual fabrics were found to be Bending Strength, Buckling Point, Density, Particle Distance, and Shear. They were also found to be important measurements when evaluating visual similarity between drape shadow images and number of nodes. 3D virtual fabric simulation method devised by the drape image analysis method was appropriate in extracting 3D fabric parameters with the reflection of actual fabrics' physical and dynamic characteristics, in connection with 3D virtual fabric simulation. 3D virtual fabric parameters with the reflection of actual fabrics' physical and dynamic characteristics using the proposed 3D virtual fabric simulation method are accumulated and provided as a standard, this will facilitate the introduction 3D virtual fabric simulation technology.
